Disappointing and expensive
This book has been highly touted, but does not live up to its hype.Any number of books are as interesting, and much cheaper."A History of Aorcraft Piston Engines" (Smith) comes to mind, as well as many of the books by Bill Gunston.Don't buy this book without seeing it first.For the same money you can get two or three other books that will together contain much more information.

"Allied Aircraft Piston Engines" solid work that fills important niche in WW2 aviation history
While there are hundreds if not thousands of books devoted to World War II military aviation, only a handful cover with any detail the critically important aspect of aero engine development.This is one of the few books available on this topic and Graham White generally does a good job covering in detail the principal (as well as obscure) British and American aircraft engines.White begins his book by describing some of the challenges faced by aircraft piston engine designers before diving headlong into the specific histories and technical aspects of key British and American engines.His descriptions of each engine are highly technical and he displays his talents as an engineer and mechanic in terms of his detailed description of engine parts and systems.White also brings us back to the bigger picture with vivid descriptions of the personalities who played a role in the design and manufacture of each engine as well as descriptions of the aircraft that used them.

You Can Fly High Coloring This Book
This is a very easy book to color and a lot of fun.Although the author gives detailed coloring instructions in the captions, they may be a bit challenging if one is not familiar with parts of the plane.I found an excellent site on the internet which provided me with small color images of many of the planes, which helped a lot.The site is:www.aviation-central.com

No HOs In Any Area Code
Philippe has not written the slot car version of the Gutenberg Bible I'll grant you, and you won't need a fork lift to unload the book when it arrives, as it's simply not as weighty a tome as apparently one or two reviewers would have liked. Me, I loved this compendium of the slot car phenomenon -- focused on the manufacturing luminaries of the craze in the 1960s heyday, many of whom were from Los Angeles. Several years ago I made a point to visit the buildings that once housed the various manufacturers in the Los Angeles basin just for fun... It was amusing to walk into these places and ask if I could root around the attic cos it used to be a place that made slot cars -- the answer was always no...and "by the way what the hell is a slot car?"
For the vintage reader
You probably had to have been there to have enjoyed this trip back to my junior and senior high school days. Self-aggrandizing fluff
Chock-full of DeLespinay's "small fish in a small pond" ego and little else, this book is a waste of time and money. While he'd like everyone to *think* he was "Present at the Creation," DeLespinay was a mid-70's emigrant from France, and thus a VERY latecomer to the US slot scene. Even THAT dying scene isn't remotely well-covered here -- there's NO technical content, NO valuation guides (you *could* go to DeLespinay's ludicrous website and automatically divide his prices by 5, I guess..); in fact, unless you enjoy nonsensical, name-dropping anecdotes about how Phi-Phi invented everything from fire to the Gurney flap (no kidding), and minimalist murky photos of such asinine slot-flops as the Asp and similar Thingies, simply give this steaming pile a wide miss. Instead, for REAL information from a guy who really WAS present at the creation, get the new Robert Schliecher book "Racing and Collecting Slot Cars" and any of his older books if you can find them. ...
