Excellent start for collectors
Outwater picked a fascinating subject. Her text is well thought out and the quality of the pictures are superb. Where the author hits a bump is that she had too much from modern liners and not enough from the olderliners. Also the guesstimates on the prices of the items were a bit high.As a serious collector I think they were raising the rates on certain itemslong before their time.

Very Fine Engravings
I purchased this book over 20 years ago. This is a fantastic book of Steam Engine engravings. You won't find a better collection (at least I haven't.)

Early American Locomotives.
This book is a collection of engravings from the 19th Century, each with minimal history. It is an absolute gem , a cache of information about locomotives from before the era of manufacturers photographs. Engravings were used as illustration in sales literature and publicity material, and so a wide variety of locomotive types are depicted covering more or less 1800-1900. The accuracy of the engravings is superb-in some cases it is possible to scale from an engraving to determine pipe sizes, nut bolt diameter etc. For the price this book cannot be beaten. ... Comprehensive in reach/scope if not every detail, this book is an essential part of even a tiny research library for those interested in answering the questions of looks or specs on cars from the distant and recent past.Although listing only through 1990 models, more recent are rarely deemed potential collectibles, and so the relevance is largely unscathed by the decade plus since publication. Been there done that
My father and I just got back from visiting The Nethercutt Museum.The book does a great job of bringing the museum home with you.If you can get to the museum you can pick up a copy of the book at the reception desk for [money]-a bargain.
