New technique
I finally received my book after a long, long wait but it was worth it.This is a subject that I have never seen covered in any other book.Filigree has been a lost art.The photos of the projects looked daunting to me at first but, after reading the author's clear instructions, I found that I was no longer feel daunted.The photos are exceptional and clearly show all I need to know. I feel fairly sure that with the book at my side I will be able to accomplish the projects in this book.It's also a tease.I couldn't help thinking of all the things I could do with this technique that I had never thought of before.The book, once I master the technique, will open up a world of design that wasn't open to me before.That's the glory of learning.It takes us to new heights.

Drool Worthy
This book is worth it just for the gallery - book after book from top creative bookbinders. Dan Essigs books inparticular are especially inspiring, but the entire book is full of great artists, and the step by steps are a great peek into how they create. Any creative bookbinder would be happy to have this in their library!

Not So Much.
Penland is excellent. Its instructors and classes excellent. But while this book covers a wide range of material from skilled, respected bookbinders, THIS BOOK IS NOT EXCELLENT.
A book of beauty and substance
This book is more than just a collection of the work of a number of outstanding bookmakers amd bookbinders.It is also an explication of the approach of each artisan to his/her art, and a step-by-step illustration of one of each person's projects.The photographs are also outstanding.

Ed Schmid knows his way around a blowpipe
This is flat-out the BEST book currently available on learning how to blow glass. Ed has been working with and teaching others how to work with hot glass for years. Buy it. Read it. Do it!

Best place to begin
This was my first book, and I have recommended it to students since. Hand-written (not typed) and very personal, he lends a good sense of humor and personality to an otherwise intimidating medium. It gives you the feeling that you're hanging out listening to a good friend describing a casual hobby instead of an overly serious instructor. It's just fun to read, and gets you really excited about digging in to some good old molten glass. The second book is just as good as the first. I'd give them 10 stars if that was an option. ... True to its name.
Well, the name of this book is Last Minute Fabric Gifts, not Inventive New Sewing Ideas.
Too Simplistic
Last Minute Knitted Gifts is one of my favorite knitting books, so I bought this book hoping to find lots of inspiration for cute sewing projects.Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with it.Many of the patterns (scarves, blankets, dishtowels, a sarong) involve not much more than buying a large piece of fabric and hemming it. Some projects are not sewing projects per se, but rather involve felting (felted rocks?Seriously?), or simply using fusible interfacing to attach fabric to things.While the results of all of these types of projects aren't unattractive, I'd rather use my limited crafting time to create, rather than embellish, and I certainly don't need a book to tell me that if you hem a piece of fabric, you can call it a blanket.As for the actual sewing projects--well, some are cute, but if you can't find versions of them for free on Craftster or the crafty blogs, you're not looking very hard.There are some cute projects here--a darling felt bunny, a patchwork pillow, a hooded towel that would make a great baby gift--but overall, I think anyone who is interested in more than basic beginner-level fabric projects would be better served by Amy Butler's In Stitches or Denyse Schmit Quilts. At the very least, I'd look at this book in a store before you spend the money.

Wonderful inspiration for sewn gifts!
I just saw this book at the bookstore and ran home to buy it on Amazon.The book is filled with original ideas of things to sew.The author uses a lot used fabrics, sweaters, and such to create new items, which I found particularly appealing.A great book to get before the holidays.Get out your sewing machines! ... EV reference...has all the ins and outs
This book is a great reference for anyone interested in the trade offs when creating an electric vehicle.
Electric cars rule!
This is a very informative book that can tell you pretty much everything you need to know when it comes to electric vehicles.If you want a good fiction read about electric vehicles, try 'The Wilson Concern', by Will Alan.I found it very entertaining and informative.

My first referance in my Q8 - EV

Excellent Woodworker's Tool
A basic guide that covers just about all you need to know on the subject.Taunton is always the source to use for the best in anything to do with carpentry and home repair.

Starting Out Right
It's not like me to wax poetic over a an introductory how-to book, but Lonnie Bird's tome on Using Woodworking Tools really is one of the finest effots I've ever seen.Taunton continues to set the bar with their 'complete illustrated' guides, but this one is exceptional for even that series.

Timeless Reference for Gracious Living
This beautifully photographed book is a feast for the eyes and fodder for the creative person.It is NOT a step by step guide on how to wrap a package (although she does devote a couple of pages on how to wrap a basic box which most people know) or tie a bow (she also shows how to tie a basic bow).IT is full of ideas that one can "lift" and make your own with your own materials.
Been there done that
Nothing new, to me anyway. Pictures were beautiful but to someone who hasn't done it before, the instructions aren't enough.

A classic reference
The photographs in this book provide imaginative ideas for gift wrapping and giving that I will go back to again and again. The quality of the book, the personal notes, list of resources for materials, brief easy how-tos, suggestions for materials, and creating computer-generated wrapping paper, are all appealing facets of this gorgeous book.

Perfect Book For 3D Modellers and general Artists

A few months ago, I found this book while browsing through the shelves at a local bookstore. The fantastic pictures and descriptions in the book ignited my interest in furniture history. This is not a how-to book, but if you want an understanding of the details that are characteristic of particular furniture styles -- as well as some background on the historical, political and social forces that influenced these designs -- you probably won't find a better reference manual.

My wife makes me read most of her dozens and dozens of jewelry books so I can help her out occasionally, but this one didn't need more than a quick browse to get me started.

An Excellent book for the Doré or Dante lover
The quality of this book - along with an amazingly affordable price tag - quickly persuaded me to pick up a copy. Its really everything you could ask for in an art book;
Absolutely Wonderful (Really 4 and a half stars)
I have looked at a variety of Dante artists. Some well known and some are not. Suloni Robertson, John Flaxman, Willam Blake, Sandro Botticelli, Sandow Birk, Herb Roe. Do a google search to look at the works of some of these like Sandow Birk. There are some that are more obscure which in a way documents the Comedy, more specifically the Inferno. I'm not going to say who I don't like but Dore is the best. I am rather specific about artists. Dore makes the grade. He is good, really good and when you look at this book, you feel like you are in the terrible depths of hell. I like purgatorio too. I feel the religious prayer songs in my head as I see Beatrice's entrance. There is so much symbolism in these pictures, especially in Paradiso. Though I do disagree with the depiction of Muhammad in hell, the rest is fantastic. I mean that he looks more like he's British then Middle Eastern. I imagine him with blonde hair in the plate. The tortured look on Dante's face in the plate with Betrand de Born, (The cover pic) is extraordinary. I felt how he felt. That is why Dore is so good. I had also hoped for more detail with Ugolino because his story is fantastically horrifying.
The Dore's Illustrations for Dante's Commedia are great.
The Illustrations from the 1st canto in the Inferno to the last of Paradiso are great because they help as a visual aid when reading the Divina Commedia.One can really see how and in which ways Dore, when he design the illustrations, followed the text very closely. ... Read more

excellent for starters and good resource for those old hats
It you are interested in vintage altered art and collage this book is for you...good part of the book is working with tools.the instructions aer clear, the pictures helpful and the examples inspiring for everyone.For those who have done collage for a while the best part fo the book talks about using family history and culture in your work as well as some great ideas about where to find different materials.

Gorgeous book that inspires you to indulge in your culture
I believe everyone should indulge in their culture and make some art. Josie has not only done that with this book, but offers oodles of ideas to inspire others to do so too. The projects are unique and the presentation is beautiful, great directions too. Way to go, Josie!

Making Wire Jewelry
Younger wire makers will appreciate this book.The patterns are simple and use only wire in repeated designs joined together.The ring section is very simple and is only for someone just starting out in wire.Do not purchase this item if you have any expierence in wire jewelry--only if just starting out.

I LOVE WIRE JEWELRY
I am a 13 year old who loves trying new art.You might think because im'm 13 the projects in this book are easy, but they aren't.Some can be challenging but there are a few easier designs.I got this book becaus it was packaged with a kit including wire and pliers for [not much money.] Anyway, After I used up all the wire (lots of it) i was addicted.I was walking through [a store] and I saw more Wire Jewelry making products called Wild Wire(made by NSI Innovations). This should solve the people who can't find any supplies problem.They sell many things that the book calls for including a jig with removable pegs and other things that I found can be very useful in my new fascination with wire jewelry(especially the bead maker, I highly recommend it).This is a great book and you should definately get it if you are interested in wire jewelry making, but beware, you may become addicted.... ... Best of the T-shirt bunch
I think this is the best T-shirt transformation book of the bunch.This isn't flashy -- there are no photos, just spot illustrations for each design -- but there are a lot of great ideas here, and you can easily mix and match elements.The ideas become endless.Highly recommended.

simply done
This book makes transforming your t-shirts so easy.Each design has clear directions and great drawings to show you where to cut, sew, and/or trim your shirt.Even better, it tells you how long it should take you to do it!Great manual for teaching students!

A good mix...
I got two of these books at the same time and this is the best one.There are, admittedly, some patterns that would NOT work for a 30-something girl like myself but, if you have a bit of vision and can pair it up with other items, a good many of these patterns will work nicely.Some of them are just way off in left field, too tattered and torn looking, which is NOT my style.But, some of them are very chic, boho and so cute.I plan to make a good many of them!Really great book! ... Don't overlook this book--it's more than "holiday" knitting!
It's almost a shame this book was organized around the "holiday" knitting theme.I didn't even look at this book for months because I assumed it was limited to Christmas stockings and tree skirts.Of course, there ARE a couple of Christmas stockings and tree skirts, but there is so much more.
Simply inspiring! Not just for the holidays, either!
I had seen this book before the holidays, but didn't buy it to avoid any unneeded pressure to do too much knitted gift-giving.I'm glad I realized my own weakness, else I would have worked myself to the bone!Melanie has done it again!Wonderful ideas and fabulous photos and beautiful embellishments.I am ready for winter - actually, year roundgift giving! This selection of patterns is elegant and gracious (nothing trite or boring here). There is much more to this book than just holidays - the patterns are classic and adaptable for all 365 days... and there is something for all skill levels, too. While I hope to graduate to the more complicated projects (some day), I am happy with the simpler patterns and pure inspiration. I am going to my LYS to pick upnew threads for the flowers patterns!

Original knitting ideas.
This book is not your run of the mill knitting book, it goes way beyond scarves and hats. It has very creative ideas such as knittedChristmas tree ornaments, a pair of knee high socks, ballerina-like slippers and many others. borders on quilts

Lots and lots of patterns
When making a quilt, I'm usually so anxious to get the quilt done that I don't spend time to make a nice border.But this book changed my mind about that.It's full of border possibilities with clear instructions.

Striped piecing used for pieced borders
I have never used striped piecing in quilting. I am an old fashion scrap quilter. I know there are those that buy their fabrics so they always have enough. There is a lot of waste with the authors method. I intend to use this on baby quilts I am a firm believer in piecing the border.My way is tedious and I am looking forward to speeding up the process.A few colored pictures mostly black and white drawings. Wide variety of unique quilting ideas
I love this book!The patterns are simple, but the results are really fabulous.These are the types of things that you'd find a trendy Manhattan boutique.I made "Steve" the cat for my daughter for Christmas last year, and she's crazy about him.The scarves are elegant, and each one is a work of art, depending on the fabrics one chooses.And Denyse even includes a pattern for one of her signature quilts.This is a great book to show people that quilting doesn't have to be country-craftish.It can be extremely stylish and hip.

Pretty to look at, but disappointing if you want a book about quilts
After looking at Denyse Schmidt's website, I was very excited to purchase her book and start making unique quilts of my own!While her instructions in "Denyse Schmidt Quilts" are very clear, and there are numerous helpful hints, only 1/4 of the book addresses actual quilts. For those who are interested in oven mitts, quilted scarves, and small-scale projects, this is a delightful and pretty book to choose. However, for those (like myself) who are looking for a book dedicated to quilts (and not patchwork projects) you would be better served checking out other sources. I purchased the Modern Quilt Workshop in addition to Denyse Schmidt Quilts and would highly recommend it as an alternative

Review of Polymer Clay Techniques
This book is great for me as a beginner.It has the projects I was looking for and step by step instructions were more concise for me to follow without missing a pertinent step i might have a question about as in other books and magazines I have looked at.Sue Hauser has also given valuable information on the other materials to be used with the clay and several techniques using these in detail.She also lists the different properties on different brands of polymer clay which really enlightened me on why I might be having a problem with certain clays and my use of them.It definitely broadened my imagination.

Excellent beginner (and beyond) book
I got my start with Polymer Clay using the excellent Kato book, "The Art of Polymer Clay" and was instantly hooked. Always interested in seeing new ideas and techniques, I was happy to see this new book. It has a few more ideas and a different outlook. What I like the most is the step-by-step approach given in this book. The Kato book did step-by-step as well, but this one is laid out very nicely with more pictures of "how-to".

Being an architect (of buildings) I appreciate Madeleine Vionnet's approach to clothing "architecture."It is a pleasure analyzing the patterns and looking at the results in the gowns.Some of the gowns are very contemporary-looking and would be appropriate on today's "red carpet" events.It is a worthy and significant addition to any library

Designer skilled beyond belief
I have always admired photos of Vionnet's gowns.Not until I read this book did I have the slightest inkling of the genius in her work.She was truly an architect of clothing for the body.The book shows photos of each garment accompanied by pattern illustrations to show how the garment was constructed.Pure amazement.A wonderful book to give to anyone working with fabric, from fiber artists to homemakers.
Inspiring!
Though I have not read this book through I have paged through completely and it is a wonder visually.It has amazing photos along with patterns and history of many of Vionnet's creations.This book can be enjoyed by pattern makers, designers, history buffs and clothes horses.

Very appealing designs and clear directions
I just finished knitting the "Sensational Shirttail" from this book, a v-neck aran cardigan. The design appears complicated and is rated intermediate, but it was truly easy to follow the very clear instructions. Everyone who has seen it loves it and is astonished that I, a novice knitter, actually did it all myself, and in less than three weeks! I am ready to begin others sweaters from this book, just trying to decide what colors and types of yarn to use. Oh, another great thing about this book is that it gives you the yarn weight used in the original pattern and the yardage, as well as the needle sizes, so you can adapt to your choice of fiber. I knitted my sweater in a chunky weight cotton, and I couldn't be happier with it. There are so many other beautiful patterns in this book, I'm sure it will appeal to just about every knitter.

I thought Aran was a product of the AGES, not the 80's...
I recently bought an armload of the prettiest fuschia pink Debblie Bliss silk aran yarn, and had been waiting by my mailbox with much anticipation for my new aran pattern treasury to arrive to put my sassy pink yarn to good use.Alas, what was advertised and what arrived were two different things: for starters, none of the patterns in this book look the slightest bit "aran."

These patterns were so popular that back issues of "Knitters Magazine" were going for quite high sums on Ebay. Now, after a lot of begging on the part of knitters around the world, Knitters Magazine and XRX Press have collected patterns by type from those hot issues and released them in book form. THANK YOU!
