5-0 out of 5 stars "Du Marivaudage" or about Seduction in french style fashion and interiors
This is a book you will enjoy. It will appeal to anyone interested in decorative arts in France between 1750 and 1789. The fashion focuses on dress and its aesthetic interplay with art, furniture, and the decorative arts of the period. Presented in a dramatic setting, the beautiful pictures of the Metropolitan Museum exhibition explore the dressed body's spatial negotiation of the 18th-century interior as a choreography of seduction and erotic play.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning collection of costume photos
Beautiful full color photographs of the Met's Louis XIV's clothing collection and furniture.Manequines are dressed in beautiful originals and posed in drawing rooms and boudoirs in real life poses, flirting, playing piano, having their hair done, playing cards. The photographs are very well done, clear and the detail pieces will be a boon to any costumer.I highly recommend this book for costumers and other historical clothing buffs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fusion of Fashion and Style, done with amazing grace
When I was young, I read a biography for children about the tragic Marie Antoinette, last queen of France, and found myself enthralled by the exquisite decorative arts of the time. It was a culture that viewed that every surface and substance was an opportunity to embellish and use. Sometimes the end results were overblown, but also managed to stay on the edge of good taste.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've been waiting for a book like this
Although I didn't pay cover price through [...] this book by Paul Andrew Wandless is well worth every penny. The information in this book is priceless. If you've ever wondered how to print on clay, this is the book to buy. This will be my go-to book of choice when I need a step-by-step tutorial on how to print on clay. The description written by Amazon.com says it all: "Comprehensive how-to book." There are photo tutorials for all projects and a wealth of images from artists around the world (most of which are current works).

4-0 out of 5 stars I never knew...
I have this romantic notion that one day I will retire from the Army, settle down somewhere nice, and tend my bee hives filled with gentle bees, reaping in gallons of sweet, liquid gold.Like I said, it's a romantic notion. What this book clearly states is that there is more to successfully operating an apiary than harvesting the honey a few times a year. It's science and agriculture. It's care and preservation. It's timing and careful planning. But this book didn't scare me away from my notions, rather it provided me with the critical information I'll need to successfully care for my own colony of bees.I get excited just thinking about the possibilities. The book is clearly laid out, informative, and comprehensive in scope.I recommend it for a beginner, like me, or someone who wants a good, well-rounded resource guide on beekeeping.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good resource, but not the bee all, end all...
I used this book as my only reference for starting my career as a backyard beekeeper. I find it very helpful and it is a good reference but it's also rather incomplete.I got my bees in Nucs not boxes and there wasn't much that a beginner needed to understand the differences. Also, when I checked my hives for the first time, I realized that this book is lacking a lot of what looks normal and what doesn't; there are only a few photos, mostly not very useful. Why doesn't the book tell you to smoke yourself and the bees to help prevent stings? Why isn't there info about using sugar water in addition to smoke to help you when in the hive? Now that I'm started I wish that there was a volume II with more detail to help me at the next level.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great beginners book
This is a great "first" book. It is excellent for explaining the parts of a hive, terminology, etc., in a very readable manner, and I love the cartoons. But you must also read other books as well. The more you read, the more you'll be able to separate "opinion" from "hard fact." "The New Starting Right with Bees" etc. are excellent first-year companions to "Beekeeping for Dummies." If you start with this book, you'll be on your way; if you stop with it, you will be in a sorry state. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The standard intro for those starting out
This book is the standard for those starting out. It is often included in brewing kits and covers brewing in a broad manor. Charlie's motto is to relax, don't worry, have a home brew. This is very good advice. Most of what we do while brewing can be done in many ways and the processes have a high tolerance for variations.
5-0 out of 5 stars The bible of homebrewing
If your interested in homebrewing, this book is the place to start.I've read it cover to cover several times over the years and have used it as reference many times. It's easy to understand for a beginner and is where i learned the most important phrase of homebrewing, "relax and have a homebrew".

4-0 out of 5 stars All you ever wanted to know about home brewing.
I got interested in home brewing last fall ('03) and went to a shop that specializes in equipment and kits. From there, I wanted to get into learning more about the process and devining my own concoctions. This book is a recommended upgrade to their beginners kit and I purchased it later after brewing a kit or two. After reading this book, I am very confident that I know what to do to get the tastes out of the different breeds of hops and grain mixtures. This book actually goes a little further than I needed it to, as it goes into the chemical processes with the different ions in the water, and such as that. However, if you are a beginner brewer and want to delve into your own creations, this is where to go.It's a great work to set you on the right track. It has everything you WANT to know and some that you could probably care less about, but worth adding to the shelf if you enjoy the hobby. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars No more hesitation!
After viewing amazing art quilts for years at fairs and exhibits, I wanted an attempt at my own. This book was recommended in more than one place, so I chose it along with three other art quilt books. This, by far, has been the most useful tool in my new hobby of machine quilting. Ms. Noble makes it easy to follow each of the steps to get you quilting. One part of this book that stands out is the small tips & hints peppered throughout her succinct text. Also, I am sure the threads and materials grids have saved me hundreds of dollars in "testing" thread and accessories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Zimmermann at a bargain price
Knitter's Almanac is a classic knitting book by Elizabeth Zimmermann, and Dover makes it available at a bargain price. It features EZ's charming, conversational style and a collection of her innovative designs and techniques. Fans of Zimmermann's Knitting Without Tears, Knitting Around, or Knitter's Workshop will want to add this to their collection. If you have never knitted before, or never worked with one of Elizabeth's books, I recommend starting with Knitting Without Tears, which is designed for beginners and is a good introduction to her style of instruction.Elizabeth's patterns are not written in standard notation, but in conversational English. For instance, her baby leggings begin, "For longies, therefore, I cast on sufficiently for the waist and work a piece of ribbing."People seem to either find her style charming or frustrating. It might be good to get a copy of one of her books from the local library and see how you like her writing style before buying her books. For her devoted fans however, this book is a must-have.It includes a classic aran pattern, baby jacket and leggings (she calls them "longies"), an innovative sweater combining cabling with colorwork, her unusually constructed "Mystery Blanket", some mittens, hats, her classic "Pi Shawl", some Christmas ornaments, grown-up wool leggings (with or without feet), her open-collared pullover (an innovatively constructed knitted golf shirt), re-footable moccasin socks, and her "Hurry-Up Last Minute Sweater". There is an appendix full of illustrated instructions for techniques such as stocking stitch and garter stitch grafting, knitted-on sideways border, casting-on cast-off, sewn cast-off, provisional or invisible cast-on, thumb trick for afterthought mitten thumbs, afterthought pockets, and i-cord border. All of her patterns are worked in the round with few seams, and most are full of the unusual techniques she delighted in developing.Following them you will nearly always learn new techniques you can apply to other projects of your own.I purchased the book for her baby legging pattern (which works for any gauge yarn and any size baby you choose), and for the Pi Shawl, which is ideal for lace knitters who like to add their own lace stitches to a basic pattern. Also, I enjoy her conversational style of instruction, and find it a nice change from the norm.

5-0 out of 5 stars EZ Knitter's Almanac
I'm making the Aran Pullover for someone with narrow shoulders. What I find wonderful about this book is Elizabth explains how and where to make inc/dec within the aran pattern. She takes the control away from the pattern and puts it back with the knitter.

4-0 out of 5 stars EZ
I discovered this book, to my delight, at a local bookstore.Although it shares qualities with EZ's other texts, I find it to be not quite as useful as "Knitting without Tears" or "Knitting in the round".Still, the patterns are interesting and the almanac is well-written. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delicious
This book is chock full of gorgeous photos of altered book pages. It's one of my favorites to just browse through and be inspired and amazed at the creativity of these artists. Not a how-to book. But if you love looking at altered books, here's a chance to see the works of fourteen talented artists in one place.

5-0 out of 5 stars great great book
Reading this book felt like I was visiting Lynne Perrella's studio. The photos are great - I could almost feel the texture on the original artwork. There is an endless number of ideas and techniques that can be applied into many mixed media projects. This book will keep me inspired for a long time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Was hoping for more than an Idea book...
I like the images and they are very inspiring, but I found this book to be a big let-down for me. I was hoping for more insight on how the processes are done, not what the finished projects looked like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for Beginners, in my humble opinion
I first borrowed this book from the library, and now I have finally been able to order it. I have used two other books on this subject, but I think CeCe Wire's book is best suited for me. I am a beginner with this material, however, I want my finished projects to have a certain streamlined sophistication, and I feel that of all of the books I have read on this subject, this book suits my needs and goals best. Ms. Wire has a wonderful grasp on the technical aspects of working with metal clay. Her projects are great for beginners, well illustrated and explained, but the final results are professional and stylish. One does not need to invest in many additional tools or materials in order to finish her projects. I also find that her projects and gallery of finished pieces provide a great springboard to encourage the reader to envision and create their own great jewelry pieces. There is a non-jewelry piece in here, but that does not bother me at all. It encourages the reader to consider other uses for metal clay, and who says jewelry must only be worn on the body? Why not create decorative objects as "jewelry" for the home? If you do not have a kiln, do not worry. I fire my pieces on my gas stove or with a small butane torch purchased from my local home improvement store. Also, I hear that bead and jewelry stores that have PMC or Art Clay Silver classes or paint-your-own-ceramics studios are often willing to fire your pieces for a reasonable fee. So give this book a try, I hope you will be as pleased as I am!
3-0 out of 5 stars I'm not that impressed with the projects
I just received this book today and I leafed through it and put it down.Normally with a book of this type (art instruction, projects etc) I'll just get lost in it and read it from cover to cover.I bought this book based on the reviews here and also that Ms. Wire is the head cheese at the PMC Guild, but if I had seen this book first in the store I probably wouldn't have purchased it.The jewelry projects are not my style at all, and the layout and photography isn't that exciting either.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Clear Photos
This book has wonderful photographs that are clear enough to see the details of the jewelry and steps involved in creating them. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Eye Opener
I have only been selling Japanese Antiques for a short time and I found this book is fantastic to show potential tansu customers. It has also helped us (Japanache dot com dot au) with selection when on buying trips to Japan and restoration once back in Australia.
4-0 out of 5 stars Strong on Art , Light on Craft
I am biased; I am a woodworker. This is actually a terrific book offering a huge collection of beautiful photos, and an extensive commentary about the role of Tansu in Japanese lifestyle and culture. However the craft of making Tansu was not well represented. From the title I would have expected more on tools, techniques and joinery.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tansu Tribute
If you are fascinated by the creation of handmade Japanese cabinetry, this is one of the few books you can find on the subject because for some reason, the cabinetry of Japan is one of the least recorded aspects of Japan's woodworking history. Throughout this guide, you will find lush photographs of opaque and transparent lacquered chests, their hand-forged iron handles and the tools of the trade. I especially enjoyed the hand-colored photos of family life, rice fields and the textile sellers. Not only do you get to glimpse this magical world of Zen temples and street merchants selling sweet rice drinks, you will be able to view page after page of stunning merchant chests, bedding chests, clothing chests and mizuya-dansu (kitchen cupboards).

5-0 out of 5 stars I wanna go home and KNIT!
I just got this book delivered to me at work along with Volume Two: Cables, and they are both awesome! What I really like is that there's no "learn to knit" section taking up precious pages...just a short forward and then on to the stitch patterns, every single one of which is just gorgeous! Can't say enough great things about this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars I want one too!
I bought this book (and Volume II) as a gift and wish now that I had bought two . . . one for me, also!It is a wealth of information and it also looks good.Besides ordering my very own copies of I and II, I have already pre-ordered Volume III.

2-0 out of 5 stars The editors missed a MAJORopportunity to make this outstanding dictionary!
First of all, I will admit that I am a sucker for knitting and crochet dictionaries.I have all of the classics from the Harmony guides, Barbara Walker's treasuries to the older Mon Tricot books. There have been several other dictionaries, and I have also purchased them rationalizing that if I miss a pattern in one book, I may give it more attention in another one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Gift for the Lover of Beauty
Carolyne Roehm demonstrates her exquisite taste from the very first page of this lavish book.Organized by season, each chapter celebrates the beauty of all sorts of blossoms in stunning arrangements. These arrangements are lush and full and show an artist's mastery of texture and extraordinary combination of color. The photos are reminiscent of the sumptuousness of the movie, The Age of Innocence, with lovely gilded gold, crystal and porcelain containers. The photography truly is breathtaking and includes not only close ups of the bouquets but also glimpses of elegantly set dining tables, gorgeously furnished rooms and spacious gardens. Her prose is poetry, but also practical in the sections on containers, elements of style and basics.A better book on flower arranging couldn't possibly exist.

5-0 out of 5 stars **Fantastic Photos**
This book is a joy- the vibrant photos actually helped me through the long Pennsylvania winter.Lots of great tips on arrangements- from colors and containers.I envy Roehme's budget for entertaining!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible photography of the most beautiful flowers
The flowers depicted in this book gave their lives for a truly noble cause and have been honored appropriately by the photographer.Quite simply they were displayed and photographed in the most beautiful fashion possible.Perhaps the key word there is fashion -- Carolyn Roehm has the experience and eye for fashion, having been a former designer, and that experience may be what enabled her to display the flowers in a way that truly does them justice.I coveted this book for a long while, having seen it in a bookstore, and couldn't get it out of my mind. Now that I own it, I consider myself very fortunate indeed. The book is divided into the four seasons.Particularly strong are the photos depicting the flowers prevalent in Fall and Spring. The smoky greens, yellows, oranges, reds, and browns of the Fall months's foliage manage to look festive and lovely despite their representing the waining of life until the Spring. The photos of lilacs and daffodils in the section on Spring make one hopeful for the end of winter and make one realize why all that shivering is eventually worthwhile.I loved this book and recommend it heartily for anyone who loves pretty flowers and doesn't particularly have any special horticultural knowledge. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gorge yourself on gourds!
What a great book! I took a gourd coiling class and the instructor had this book. I couldn't wait to get my own copy! This book is so thorough. From cover to cover it's filled with information, pictures and ideas, you can't help but be inspired. I was, and now I'm "gourding" like crazy!

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT
This is a great book for beginners such as myself. It gives good project ideas and instruction to complete projects. Also a goodsection on gourd history.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gourds? Yes, gourds. Are you sure? Sure I'm sure.
Well, I bought this book because I was bored, and wouldn't you know it, it was about gourds!(It didn't teach me how to rhyme, I learned that in college).I don't really like gourds. They seem so hostile some times, you know what I mean? It's like they know youre going to carve them so they dont cooperate one bit.So now I'm using the book as a little wall that Im using to keep this mouse trapped in the corner of my bathroom. The book is heavy so he cant get out so I just feed him corn and keep him there. The book makes an excellent wall.I looked for a book about walls to use as the wall but I didn't have one.Well, time for my pill.Dipsy-do! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The One to Have
Leonard Lee's "The Complete Guide to Sharpening" is a wonderful (make that essential) addition to the home or shop library. A writer once told me that a really good title should only fit one book, and this one certainly does. After reading the table of contents I was awakened to the idea that almost every tool needs something sharpened, reshaped, or polished to perform its tasks the best. How about sidecut pliers, tweezers, various drill and router bits? They're covered in this book.I appreciate the photographs and illustrations of various cutting edges under extremely high magnification. The whole "a picture is worth a thousand words" cliche takes on serious meaning in this book. Some prospective buyers may look at the sheer scope of this work and think it's overkill -- too comprehensive for most hobbyists. I strongly disagree. This work should be read, followed, and kept for future reference. I would not have thought of sharpening my pruning shears, hedge trimmers or other tools had I not purchased this book. I find it well-written, comprehensive in scope, founded in facts, and easy to follow. I consider this book the equivalent of a doctoral dissertation on sharpening. Buy it and use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now my tools are scarey sharp!
Prior to reading Mr. Lee's book my approach to sharpening was to fire up the grinding wheel and make some sparks fly from the tool's cutting edge. The results were less than satisfactory.I needed a mentor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - companion cd is "okay"
This new "pro" edition of The Complete Metalsmith is everything you would expect it to be. Detailed, accurate, and filled with many useful diagrams. It is a significant improvement over the regular edition in terms of topic depth and scope.

4-0 out of 5 stars Knowing and enjoying your Rolex
If you are interested in the history and development of this much sought after watch, I feel that this is the best book on the market for under $125. Photos of an extaordinary amount of Rolex watches add to the abundant, easy to read, printed information. Maybe there are some new styles not listed but, so what, they will be in future editions. I think this book is invaluable to the Rolex collector, just starting out or with years of experience. A pleasure to read and to own. Please note that this is the 3rd. edition of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars The old Rolex book
Book is fine if your interested in 30+ year old watches. No reference to newer watches.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well, it wasn't as helpful as I had hoped.
This book still provides the basics, some terminology and such...but the patterns that are "included" are outdated by about 20 years. That was very disappointing since the instructions refer to these patterns and that feature was a big selling point for me, so as to practice the actual tips and learn with the book before spending more money at the fabric store!

4-0 out of 5 stars goodbook for beginers
Explains the basics of sewing. I used this book while taking a begining sewing class and I feel it explained some of the points that the instructor left out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Creating Life-Like Animals in Polymer Clay
This book, by Katherine Dewey, is a terrific resource book for those wishing to make animals from polymer clay - either to enhance their other sculptures or as a stand alone product.Numerous pictures and examples, with detailed instruction guide you step by step through the process.Animals included are deer, in two poses, frog, wolf, seal, bear and more. She also includes examples of bases, such as a leave for a sleeping mouse.
5-0 out of 5 stars Creatring life-like animals in Polymer Clay
I found Katherine Dewey to be an excellent instructor, her directions were clear, detailed and easy to follow. I appreciated the directions for making your own tools as these can be expensive and hard to find. The tips and directions continue to be helpful in projects other than those given in the book. I highly recommend this book as well as her other book, Creating Life-Like Figures in Polymer Clay to anyone interested in working with this medium.

This book promises more than it delivers. The basic templates are useful, but in all other aspects this book is lacking.4-0 out of 5 stars great for copying
this isn't the 'how to draw the fashion model' book you wish taught you everything you ever needed to know. However, its good to have around when you just need to pump an idea out.It has women, men, and children.
