5-0 out of 5 stars It was an inspiration!
This is truly an absorbing book, whether or not you sew or make quilts. What a wonderful experience the 'stunt quilters' must have had - how exciting to work with world-class actors in a first-class production! The book is not really a pattern book, but it is a great read, and it does contain two patterns. If you want to begin quilt making, or if you need an inspiration for your next project, this book may do the trick.5-0 out of 5 stars Behind-the-scenes tidbits - plus patterns
"Pieces of an American Quilt" seems to fall into a category all its own.The book isn't really a quilt pattern book--although it has instructions for how to make several quilts seen in the film. And it isn't really a "making of" or movie trivia book--although it contains those elements as well.5-0 out of 5 stars 5-star plus
This is a great fun book, full of life. The author describes the role that she and her "stunt quilters" played in the filming of the movie, How To Make An American quilt starring Winona Ryder. Quilters who loved themovie (based on the book by Whitney Otto) will love McCormick's book too.It contains full-sized patterns for several of the quilts you see in themovie, with all the details you never notice in the film. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars recommended by the accidental quilter
Roberta Horton is a national treasure. I have never met her or had her for a class, but I have learned as much about quilts and constructing folk art quilts from her books as I have with many terrific courses with big name quilters. Scrap Quilts is a workshop in a book! There are no patterns--she makes you create your own paper appliques in a chapter near the end of the book. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Motivational Book About Quilts/Fabric/Style
This is the second book by Roberta Horton I have bought.I realize now that she is a teacher...her goal is to motivate us to be as creative as we allow ourselves to be, then push us just a little more. This is a wonderful book about using colors/prints/stripes together inprojects that don't "stay between the lines" so to speak.Learned about creating interest and movement in quilts by her wonderful explainations and examples. I do prefer the traditional color-coordinated repeat block quilts, BUT NOW,I know that the scrap quilts and quilts that may not have caught my eye in the past certainly will now, because I have an understanding of the work the creator put into the project. There are block patterns in this book but as far as step-by-step for creating specific quilts...no.She gives you information, examples, some how to's (applique, drafting blocks, cutting out applique patterns, etc) and lots of good info on how to let yourself go in creating a real work of art.If you feel like you have become stagnant in your quiltmaking, buy this book and enjoy the creativity it sparks inyour mind while you read it through.A nice addition to a quilter's library!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite quilt book
Although I have a fair collection of quilting books, and I keep buying new ones, this book is my favorite. Roberta Horton encourages her readers to be adventurous. She gives a really good treatment of ways to combine fabricsto make a quilt that looks inviting and interesting. She especially likesdirectionals, and she likes them slightly off-grain.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and realistic
Over 130 pages of great instruction and realistic photos that show that anyone who takes the time can do applique. Not only are the designs that you can Xerox for patterns crisp, but the instruction is easy to read and follow. And the photos are exact size, so you see what you will get when you are done.5-0 out of 5 stars Superb introduction to easy applique techniques & projects.
Make your applique a work of art through Artful Applique The Easy Waywhich features detailed project instructions for sixteen blocks filled withflowers, birds, and wreathes. The focus on easy applique includes tips forstreamlining and patterns for quick use. Superb introduction to easyapplique techniques & projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent applique technique reference
This is the best book to be published so far since "Baltimore Beauties & Beyond Vol I" by Elly Sienkiewicz for learning and refining the technique of hand applique. Both the text and illustrationsare easy to follow for the quilter new to the art of applique, as well asthose of us who "think" we have learned it all(smile) .AlthoughI wasn't particularly fond of the patterns, they are very well thought outto teach each technique in a progressive fashion. As an advanced appliquermyself, I found better ways of refining and improving some of my own work. I highly recommend this book for every quilter's library! ... Read more

This very large soft cover book has hundreds of pictures of a variety of quilts. Most of these are antique quilts with their age and place of origin indicated. The history included with some of these quilts is really fascinating. 4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring by example

Editorial Review

In addition to in-depth directions for creating 32 quilts, this volume offers excellent general instructions on all aspects of quilting, from preliminary preparations, through cutting and piecing, and on to borders, bindings, and quilting methods, plus a nice chapter on color choices. Patterns include star variations, album patch, nine-patch, and many more. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Essential Quilting Book
This was one of the very first quilting books I bought, and I found it extremely helpful.Even now, several years later, I still consult it for advice on basic questions. In my opinion, every quilter should own at least one book by Diana McClun and Laura Nownes.
3-0 out of 5 stars not for novices
I have been very frustrated in making a quilt from this book. You have to flip between several different chapters to make the blocks, and too many steps are taken for granted. I have made several quilts from other bookswhich were much easier to piece together, although they were rated asintermediate or difficult. The other reviews must be written by people whohave been quilting for so many years that they know without being told whatto do. The ideas for quilts are great- just find a different book to getthe instructions from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for quilters of all levels.
Wonderful book with good basic step by step instructions and lovely color pictures.I refer to this book again and again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Curves Really Are Not That Bad!
I really think this is a good book to have.It is written very well and there are numerous pictures on every page describing the method of sewing on a curve. For someone who has never sewn a curve and feels intimidated by trying I would recommend this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Curves in Motion:Quilt Designs & Techniques
When I bought this book, I only intended to study it for thepossibility ofmaking a curved quilt in the future (several years)--but, every time I pick it up, I become more and more enthused about the techniques and designs.I can't put this project to far into the future.5-0 out of 5 stars The Hands-down Authority on Curves!
I'm impressed!! And it takes a lot to impress me! As a teacher of traditional quilts made using today's methods, this book took me to a new level: out of traditional mode and into the "art quilt" contemporary mode. I was searching for something new to sink my teeth into and Curves in Motion was it.Absolutely wonderful photos of Judy's work as well as that of her students (It's a brave author who shows that her students work can come out looking as good as her own. Showing her students' work proves that her methods work!). The book has detailed instructions on how to cut those curves so they'll fit, and how to stitch them so they'll lay flat! Not an easy task for most quilters but Judy's instructions make how to do it crystal clear. I find the book very inspirational. I personally own over 900 quilting books and enjoy reading and re-reading them. This is a book I go back to often. It is inspiration for the soul!I give extensive hand-outs for my classes with lots of graphics as well as written instruction. But when it comes to teaching curves, I save myself a lot of time and effort and just have the students purchase Curves in Motion. Judy is, in my opinion, the hands-down authority on curves. Now - I just wish I could get my hands on her stash! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cutest Christmas ever!
I can't wait to make this quilt. I saw one made up at a quilt show or something very similar and couldn't wait to find the pattern. It is just so clever and fun.My quilt group is planning on making it as a block of the month.I am so happy I bought this book, it makes me smile every time I look through it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the North Pole
This is a beautiful book. The instructions are easy to follow and the patterns are full size.It is nice that you do not have to make a hugh project all at once. The project is laid out in sections to make it easy to do small wall hangings. These ladies are very talented and the pieces of Santa's village are precious.I am so glad I bought this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars so cute!
This is a beautiful book! The applique is so charming.I can't wait to make this quilt for myself! The only downside is that you need so many different fabrics to make this quilt as effective as theirs - oh well, more fabric shopping! This was the first Piece O'Cake book I ever bought, after trying one of their block of the month patterns and I have loved it so much that I've bought all their books since.I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to hand applique and even to maching appliquers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book with a great deal of information
This book is a real enjoyment and contains a world of knowledge regarding Baltimore Quilting. It covers all areas of information needed to take on a quilting task of this nature. Elly Sienkiewicz is a true star in her knowledge and ability to share it with the rest of the quilting world. I would highly recommend this and her other books gladly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to find Baltimore quilt book for experienced quilters.
This book takes you through the steps of Baltimore quilts by hand sewing.Elly is an expert and experienced historian of Baltimore quilts as well as an expert in hand piecing Baltimore quilts. At the end of the 10 lessons you become an experienced in piecing Baltimore quilts. The book includes over 50 pages of quilt patterns to piece.Have fun with this great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended by the Accidental Quilter
My love of Hawaiian quilting attracted me to this book and Baltimore album quilting. The instructions and patterns are clear and the designs are awesome. I particularly like the simpler patterns like double hearts, fleur-de-lis, and you are perfect (a pineapple design). I think it may be possible to machine applique as well as hand applique these designs. Of course, there are many intricate designs too--many that require rouched flowers and curved stems and intricate applique that I can only imagine being quilted by the most devoted. The directions on how to cut out thepatterns with paper folding are clear and helpful. You could spend a lifetime making the quilts in this book--and what a beautiful life you'd have! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome! A+
After seeing and being totally impressed with the quilt on the front cover of Quilter's Newsletter Magazine's March 2004 issue I had to purchase this book! The quilt on the cover of QNM is designed based off of the patterns in this book, only it is not red and green--it is pink, magenta, teal, purple, and blue (beautiful!).One of the most important things that I look for in a pattern is versitality. This book has many patterns in it and though the book is about red and green quilts, these patterns are very versitale and could be made from any color pallett.5-0 out of 5 stars EXTRAORDINARY!
Packed for the price, this book has easy to follow directions and fabulous applique designs typical of the red and green antique quilts from the 1800's.If you have a passion for antique quilts, applique, or red and green, this book is for you or any quilter - beginner or seasoned.ONE OF THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY aspects about this book is that Ms. Kimball has taken the time to not only provide a large pattern for a particular block, but provides SCORES of drawings of particular blocks with changes to the designs so that one is not confined to the pattern offered. An example of this would be for instance, the popular Single Rose Wreath.Ms. Kimball provides the layout and applique patternsfor a 16" x16" block; then offers 16 OTHER rose sketches (not enlarged, however) to give varitey. The smaller sketches are even documented designs (or spin-offs) from other quilts in books and musemums. 1-0 out of 5 stars red & green a delight

5-0 out of 5 stars Applique
This is another excellent book to add to my clollection. Easy to follow

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming, whimsical applique patterns--fantastic!
I have bought a number of Piece O'Cake books, and each one teaches me something new about applique. The thing I love about this one is the variety of designs. This book contains 100 charming applique patterns and five or six projects combining the blocks. Piece O'Cake originally published a book called "Dear Pin Pal" that had 50 applique designs. This new book combines those 50 designs and adds 50 new ones. Among others there are multiple flowers, trees, teapots, shoes, hats, houses, cats, chickens, and of course a piece of cake! If you have tried Becky and Linda's foolproof techniques taught in "The Applique Sampler" (something I highly recommend if you are serious about learning to applique) and you want to combine some applique blocks to make something all your own, this is the book for you. The chicken quilt is my favorite. It combines simple patchwork, fabulous fabric and color selection, and applique for a charming quilt. ***FYI There is a printing error. The blocks were printed at 4-1/4" inches instead of 5", which the body of the book says. This is important to know when enlarging designs to fit a specific space. The publisher has included a yellow sheet stuck to the inside cover explaining the error and how to enlarge the blocks at their printed size. Since these are applique patterns, the error does not detract from the usefulness or value of the book.***

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful quilts. Easy technique.
Don't be fooled by the prettiness of these quilts; gorgeous can--and is in this case--easy. Breaking the construction process apart, you'll see that it's very simple. Joanne pieces a background for her quilts, then cuts her"collage" pieces from printed fabric and appliques them in place. For instance, the flowers in a still life of flowers are simply cut out ofa large print flowery fabric. Easy! Use of motifs from printed fabricsrather than a calico is what gives these quilts their pow.Read more
