4-0 out of 5 stars Flying Pidgeon
I'd been dying to make the flying eagle that's on the back cover, but I had some difficulty with the instructions, which untilmately lead to a dud project. They weren't specific about which pieces NOT to add 1/4" to, as well as the sample progression photos were not all taken of the same project.I ended up with a flying torpedo/pidgeon/hot dog because I added 1/4" to the white head & tail. The rest of it was fine.Sigh.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Fun for those with Quilter's Block!

You can complete a project in about a day! This book is fantastic! The other snippet book is wonderful too!If you don't buy these books, you are a crazy quilt!

I couldn't wait to get started. This is so much fun.The author explains every step thoroughly. There are a lot of pictures to help guide one as well.Once you get started on the technique, you can't stop. I love 'painting' with fabric. This author perfected the technique.Definitely worth buying. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Kid-friendly themes and eye-catching colors fill the pages of this charming book aimed at intermediate to experienced quilters. What sports-minded child could resist the Home Run, Touchdown, Race Day, or Dreams of Gold(gymnastics) quilts? Animal lovers will delight in the parading elephants, carousel horse, polar bear, and mischievous kittens eyeing the goldfish bowl. And fairy-tale fans are sure to adore the magnificent castle design. Each project features excellent directions, thorough colored templates, a good color photo of the finished quilt, and helpful tips on fabric selection. The opening section provides an overview of all the necessary techniques, including an easy approach to appliqu&eacute (though, as the introduction warns, the projects are geared toward a more advanced skill level). Quilters seeking truly unique designs to thrill a child will find an abundance here, and, in the words of the authors, their creations may become "cherished quilts for the child inside every adult." AS I said in my review of her first book, when combined with the TV series "Quilt Central" Janie becomes your quilting instructor! Easy designs to start and more intricate as you go along. Good for small home quilting machines and just as useful with one of the high end long arms. The second book has even more designs for your collection!

This is a beautiful book with great-looking projects. I heard someone exclaiming over it at my local quilt shop and I just had to see what they were talking about. I couldn't resist it, either. What I liked was the combination of patchwork and applique both. The quilt designs were innovative, too. I'm anxious to try one of the projects soon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo!
These two designers have done an awesome job of translating their unique ideas to today's quilting. The instructions are easy to follow, the pictures are great, and their fabric choices are really spectacular. The fabrics they chose for these patterns really show off the stitch/split design. The stitch/split technique is one with which you can get on a roll with and then it doesn't take as much time.I look forward to any and all of the Jayme/Joan books to come!Keep 'em coming!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun...fun...fun!
I got this book Thursday evening; by Sunday I had half the sunflower quilt done.I would rate this project as easy but with a lot of work. You can see this quilt in the book preview. You need a lot of different fabrics for the projects but they're still relatively easy. The instructions are well-written and easy to follow. There is a lot of advice for the individual quilts and you really can't screw up if you thoroughly read AND follow the instructions.I opted not to have raw edges so that made for more work.I used an applique stitch for each layer of the flowers.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is what it says it is!
This was never intended to be a book of patterns that you can use to make quilt blocks - read the title and it is exactly what it says it is - an illustrated INDEX. Antique applique patterns are difficult to categorize since they were often the creations of the quilt's maker - Barbara Brackman has undertaken a difficult task in trying to index them. This is an excellent REFERENCE BOOK (not a how-to!)that will be very useful to anyone who collects antique quilts or who likes to work with traditional quilt patterns.

4-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Applique -- Inspirational
Filled with hundreds (thousands?) of sketches of applique patterns from antique and modern quilts, this book can be useful in either identifying the name of a certain pattern or in designing your own pattern for applique.2-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Applique

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I'd tried applique for the first time using Ami Simms's Invisible Applique, and although that wasn't entirely an unsuccessful attempt, I put down applique as something that was just not for me--it was hard and myfirst few tries were messy. But Sinema's Applique Applique Applique wasamazing--I bought it and the light turned on. My first attempt afterreading her book was an amazing success--perfect! Her descriptions andpatterns are fantastic, and she fully explains decorative stitches as wellas the applique stitch with careful diagrams. And the inclusion of manydifferent types of applique, as well as many types of projects--was exactlywhat I needed. This is the ULTIMATE applique book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with easy to read directions and clear patterns

4-0 out of 5 stars Good value for the price
These aren't awe-inspiring quilting designs; I doubt you'll say Wow even once. But there are more quilting designs here than in the "60 machine quilting designs" book (which I also own), and they all seem useful and, well, *nice*. The price is right, too, so I'm glad I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures and Even Better Designs!
I am SO glad I've added this to my library! The designs are very creative and inspiring. If you like to hand applique and are looking for something different from the usual patterns, give this a try! There are a great number of blocks and if you are creative enough you could mix and match some of the designs. All of the pictures in the book are in color and very up close for showing great detail. The last half of the book is all of the designs.I can't wait to try them out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book....
I can't remember buying a quilting book so beautifully written and ilustrated! The applique patterns in this book are really something. It is worth every penny you'll spend to buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars FREE SPIRITED APPLIQUE!BEAUTIFUL AND EASY!
This book just lifted my spirits when I browsed the designs!Better than chocolate, the designs offer a flexibility of creativity for the new quilter/appliquer.Explicit and easy directions are given for mixing designs and patterns to make wall quilts or bed quilts. The flowers, vines and berries are appliqued with exhuberant brightly patterned colored fabrics, not giving heed to consistent perfection, but instead to freedom of creativity with constant attention to FLOW.Definitely different than standard boxed-inblocked quilts, this book should inspire any quilter to break out and have fun creating.Designs are spin-offs of the ancient English art of Jacobean embroidery, which was used in clothing, bed covererings, cushions, etc.The patterns (28 included) are actual size printed on glossy paper. The gallery of pictures is a class act. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Fabric Makes the Quilt
Ms. Horton has put together one of the most inspirational and attractive quilting books that I've ever seen.I was a beginning quilter and a long-time artist, and this book helped "set me free" in this medium of fabric. It's packed with diverse examples, both culturally and stylistically. The compositions transcend their more traditional counterparts with a jaw-dropping alchemy of colour, texture, design and the spirit of creation.A must for any quilter with a rogue spirit and/oran interest in personalizing the quilt art form for certain visions!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reccomended by the accidental quilter
This is the way a fine artist quilts! No little squares and boxes and evensteven ness allowed. This book is worth it's price by illustrating how toturn a pictoral element into a Hogarth curve. (the rooster on page 50 andthe dancer on page 69.) If you are interested in bringing creativity toethnic designs--this is the book for you. Roberta gives some timely tips onmachine applique and constructing unique applique patterns that are helpfulwhen you beginning planning your own unique quilt.
