Quilted Fairie Tales is an excellent book for quilters and non-quilters, anyone who loves fairies and their stories will love this book. The author has written a book that presents patterns that are concise and easy to follow, but she also encourages imagination and creativity. The fairie quilts are presented along with the stories of each fairie. The techniques are very well described and I am excited to start my very own fairie quilt. This book was well worth the wait. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Fiber artist Katie Pasquini Masopust takes a unique approach to quilting and achieves beautiful and innovative creations. Beginning with photographs of landscapes from which she derives her quilt designs, she breaks up the surfaces with a network of lines, angles, and curves to create richly textured, intricately patterned quilts. With a multitude of how-to photos and extensive explanation, the book takes us clearly through all the intricacies of making these striking quilts. The ability to draw is not required; however, prior knowledge of quilting basics is necessary. Quilters who are seeking to try an approach vastly different from traditional blocks and who enjoy experimentation should be greatly intrigued by this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Grow as an ARTIST.
When you are ready to start pushing your quilting artistry this book may be a bridge to step off.The technique of dividing your color wheel into color and hue is always an excellent exercise. The technique for an experienced quilter will add more to your depth of understanding of how you visualize a picture and how you can break it up into a more interesting study.
5-0 out of 5 stars Katie has written another fabulous book
I bought this book over a year ago, after watching her on a Simply Quilts episode.I read it cover to cover and began a project almost immediately.Unfortunately it was put in the UFO basket but have only recently completed it, wishing I had not procrastinated.
5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant and inspirational book!
As an experienced quiltmaker with a strong Art background, I am constanly impressed with the talent and creativity of quilters. Ms Masopust is an artist in thetruest sense of the work. This book is incredibly inspirational, but is also straightforward enough to be of practical use. I can't wait to start deigning my own landscape quilt. This book gives you the technical information without being prescriptive. a must-have for all creative quilt makers! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any quilter who wants to add polishing touches
Choose from a range of designs and techniques to provide a professional finishing touch to a quilt in Bonnie K. Browning's Borders & Finishing Touches 2, a collection of ideas which uses an easy paper-folding technique to make all borders fit perfectly. Designs created by Browning use novelty bindings, scalloped edges and more to provide lovely quilt borders. Patterns, color photos, and suggestions for alternate uses of the bindings make for a 'must' for any quilter who wants to add polishing touches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photos,how-tos and patterns
If you are looking for a good reference for techniques and also for some great patterns for borders, this is the book for you. Also, if you want to make that great Windmill Log Cabin as shown on the opening of Simply Quilts, Bonnie has included all of the instructions to make this quilt. I liked the border patterns especially ... some of them are borders from prizewinning quilters like Linda Roy's Best of Show quilt, Spice of Life, and Gladi Porsche's beautiful appliqued border in Keeping Autumn with Me. Bonnie has designed some new borders too. I'm glad to have it in my library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Striking Fabric Art
Janet Bolton's needleskills are showcased in this lovely book. She has a unique style and generously shares advice on technique and sources of inspiration for creating your own images. Her choice of fabrics andbeautiful composition takes this medium to a sophisticated level. Boltonshows pictorial as well as more abstract work. I find myself coming back tothis book again and again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fun country designs, but...
This is one of the few recent quilt books that have disappointed me. The photos might have been a delightful feature in a magazine, but they don't adapt well as a how-to book with patterns. The designs have such a strongvoice, that you'll have the author's personality in the quilt, and notyours, if you make one of these designs. ... Read more

I enjoyed Ms. Horton's talk about color and Amish quilts on Alex Anderson's "Simply Quilts."So I bought the book thinking there would be a lot more information.Yes, she does have some color info and pictures of Amish style quilts, but the actual color illustrations are limited and positioned in the middle of the book.It would have been more helpful to have had several color examples along side the info and explanations given.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book about color and quilts

5-0 out of 5 stars My opinion
I have to say I did not like this as much as Jane's 1st Applique book, however it is an excellent tutorial on this brand new technique.I am a die hard needle turn applique artist and can't really see myself doing what I personally would call "rainbow" or "gradation" applique. I don't see it as color blending because there is no blending going on. I think of blending as the subtle mixing of color and this technique seems to be just side by side placement of different shades making it look mostly striped in my opinion.5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
Beautiful. That pretty well sums up what comes to mind when looking at the designs in this book.Author June Townswick discusses using many different fabrics on a single applique shape to get a nice blended effect. She describes the various techniques that she uses and the construction of the design right down to the type of stitch.Using this technique she presents photographs of some of the most beautiful quilts I have ever seen. They simply have to be seen to be believed! This is a very highly recommended book to anyone who would like to do something unique and end up with a true conversation starter. If you have any interest at all in applique you owe it to yourself to pick up this book and examine the possibilities presented here.

"Quilts from the Civil War" not only contains project for reproducing numerous quilts of the 1850s and 1860s, it also contains an excellent discussion of the role quilts played in people's lives.Barbara Brackman describes quilts made for freedom fairs, by the Sanitary Commission for use by soldiers, and quilts made to express patriotic fervor.Brackman goes beyond a mere discussion of quilts, however, to discuss the development of chemical dyes, women's involvement in the war effort in general, the effect of the blockade on southern textile production, the need to hide quilts from occupying Yankee forces, and even the relationships that developed between quiltmakers and soldiers who received the donated quilt.5-0 out of 5 stars ...

2-0 out of 5 stars Not impressed
Not as impressed as I thought. This has some very nice examples in it, but no way of knowing how much fabric, how to cut and piece together.Very self explanitory.I was looking for something a bit more definitive for putting the blocks together.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lovely to look at...
I agree with many of the reviewers - I found it very difficult to work with the patterns (tracing, no seam allowances, no light/dark suggestions) and the instructions were a tad confusing.I haven't put together any quilts from this book. However, it's a great book to look at and dream.

I would have found it helpful to know that this book is meant as acompanion to the author's previous book "Piecing: Expanding theBasics," and assumes that you're already familiar with all the piecingtechniques. The Appendix in "Pieced Flowers" has a brief overviewon how to piece curved seams, inset seams, "Z" seams,"Y" seams, puzzle seams and flaps, but it's a very small part ofthe book. Most of the flowers have 20 pieces or more per block, while themore detailed ones (like Rose) have over 50 sections. Also, you have toenlarge the patterns on a copier before you can get started.5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite and Varied Quilter's Garden
Ruth McDowell provides samples and directions for making multiple variations of 10 beautifully pieced flowers. Each has options in multiple techniques and skill levels. These are some of the most beautiful andrealistic pieced flowers I have ever seen. Each flower has options formaking it with straight seams or curved seams. Some have options withinset seams. Some have options with 3-dimensional, two-sided"flaps" that are sewn into the seams to create more realism.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant instruction on hand quilting.
This is probably the best book I have found that gives instruction forhand quilting. The color pictures give very explicit instruction for both right and left handed people. I would recommend this to anyone interestedin hand quilting, whether a beginner or a long time quilter. Alex Andersonis one of the best teachers and supporters of quilting. She does anexcellant job with her program " Simply Quilts".I wouldrecommend all her books.
