4-0 out of 5 stars Free to have fun
I bought this book in preparation for taking a class with the author. It is a great, structured way to let yourself be free and have fun. By playing the games listed in the book, you can end up with all the components of a great new quilt, that will look nothing like that made by anyone else.We each play our own games, in our own way, with our own fabric.Be warned, this is not for beginners. The beginner in my class left in tears after about the first hour.A beginner, who needs more direction, would probably never start. This book is for a quilter who wants to create her own fiber art, but needs something more than a great pile of fabric and a blank slate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start USING your stash
If you're more of a creative than a quilter, like I am, this is the book for you.In successive chapters, Hire takes the participant through eleven "games" with your fabric stash -- each which develops your skills and leaves you with an amazing set of non-traditional, contemporary quilts. From a Hopscotch block (a modified Courthouse Steps pattern) that is so easy it's beyond exciting, to a Toybox quilt which employs circles and spirals -- if you play these "games" in succession, you'll find your quilting creativity engage while your skills build and your stash shrinks.(And anything that shrinks your stash is just a good excuse to go shopping for more, right?)
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful fun for adventurous quilters
I am a quilter who absolutely loves playing with fabric and hates measuring. Dianne's book is my dream workbook--it's full of ways to play with your fabrics and learn new approaches to creating a beautiful quilt, and encourages a playful, risk-taking spirit.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful applique
The applique designs are lovely, realistic, and disarmingly simple. Watch out for small applique pieces. The individual flower designs seem to me to work better than the larger composition pieces shown, but all in all arefreshing new look.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, realistic, wild flowers.
The author and designer of this book has a great sense of humor. Her designs are realistic and her technique is simple and easy to understand.Gone is the pressure to be perfect because nature is not perfect.Thecolor plates give excellent ideas on use of the various line drawings. Designs are presented so they may be mixed to create a realistic flowergarden appearance. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
I was very disappointed with this book.I thought I was getting a quilt book about gorgeous quilts;instead I received a book containing 12 folded & detachable sheets of gift wrap paper - no writing, instructions or templates. The book description and other reviewers do not mention this, leading me to believe that they were reviewing a companion book with the actual quilt information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hawaiian Quilting - Elizabeth Root
Very well constructed book, with excellent drawings of patterns and thorough instructions included. There are additional graphics depicting suggested quilting ideas, which, for the novice hawaiian quilter, such as myself, is an excellent tool to create an outstanding finished result. Her patterns are full sized so you do not need to re-size the patterns to use them. You can trace or copy them for use.Overall, an excellent hawaiian quilting instruction book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Hawaiian Quilting Must!
I found this book to be absolutely great!!There is a great variety of easy, medium, and more challenging blocks to complete in this book. Also, there is a good variety of designs amongst the blocks. Each block is represented in color on the front and back covers. The rest of the book is in black and white.Root also gives you an idea of how each block could be quilted.Although I only have 1 thing that I would change, and it's probably just my own personal curiousity but nonetheless, I wish the blocks had a little tid bit of their own history saying why that design came to be immortalized in a quilt. The book still deserves 5 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good!!!
I wasn't sure what to expect when I was waiting for this book to arrive. When I got it, I was pleasantly surprised. The color pictures are pictured to show the beautiful finished patterns. There's a nice how-to section in the beginning of the book. It also has a page of supplies you need to start. This makes it much easier to understand the whole process. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best teaching book on Hawaiian Applique!
I purchased other books to try and teach myself Hawaiian Applique but the instructions were not clear and I couldn't get the results I wanted, then I found Vicky's book and voila, everything came together like magic! If you are new to this method, I highly recommend this book for beginners. If you have already mastered this technique, there are a few advanced patterns that are spectacular for wall quilts. If you are a teacher, this is the "best" teaching book for beginner students.

This book has very clear and easy directions and patterns for making Hawaiian or appliqued quilts. Well written and lots of ideas for projects large and small.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning Island Quilt Patterns
This book has everything you need to know to make your first Hawaiian quilt - history, Hawaiian terminology, techniques from start to finish, and gorgeous patterns to choose from. Hawaiian quilts are a unique quilting tradition; appliques based on island nature, cut using a snowflake folding method and generally quilted with radiating "echo" lines. Books on this technique are few and far between, and this one is excellent. Aloha and happy quilting! ... Read more

When I first leafed through the book, looking at the photos,I was convinced I'd never be able to grasp this technique, let alone masterit. After reading Andersen's text and getting caught up in her infectiousenthusiasm for this type of work, I'm inspired and ready to make magic. 5-0 out of 5 stars Satisfaction Guaranteed
I'm a quilting-book-hound.If I could own only two quilting books, one would be Cutting Curves from Straight Lines by Debbie Bowles, the other would be Colorplay by Joen Wolfrom. These two books cut all the frustration, when trying to accomplish those eye popping wonderful pieces, that we see in these books. They are beautifully illustrated with great color on glossy paper. Debbie's book is the clearest and simplest book I have read on the dreaded curve in quilting. There is no time consuming pinning and I got instant success with my first block.I have little patients with written instruction and found this book really cut to the chase with step-by-step instruction. If you like traditional patterns with a contemporary twist this is it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Technique
I think this is an excellent book! The blocks were SO much fun to put together. After reading this book and trying out a few easy designs, my confidence in sewing curves has increased immensely!Ms. Bowles guides you thru her techniques in the first 25 or so pages and then devotes the rest of the book to creative designs. She shows you how to make a traditional log cabin design, among other designs, and give it a very contemporary feel and look!If you're very anxious about trying curves, give this book a try and see where it takes you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, creative, and contemporary approach to quilting:

5-0 out of 5 stars The Quilting Bible
I love it.It is easy to follow and answers the most basic questions in easy to understand language. The pictures are clear and easy to follow. Well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Reference Book
If you want detail for every step of the quilting process, this is the book for you.It tells you what size needle to use for piecing vs. quilting; type of thread; types of batting; fabric quality; stitch length; how to determine the grain of the fabric; how to press seams; how to assemble a quilt; quick tips for cutting and sewing; how to make borders; the best way to fold and store a quilt; how to create articles other than a bed quilt (purse, tote bag, place mats, pillow covers, table runner, clothing); what equipment you need; how to organize your work space; how to move a full-size quilt through your machine.I took my highlighter and went crazy. It could be a bit daunting for a beginner so I would pair this book with Marsha McCloskey's "Quick Classic Quilts" (for traditional quilts) or with Margaret Rolfe's "A Quilter's Ark" (for contemporary foundation quilts with animal designs). They have much abbreviated instructions that would be easier to follow for a first-time quilter. Then I would use "The Quilting Bible" as a reference to make sure I understood the techniques to get truly professional results.

This book has lots of lovely pictures and what look like complete directions. BUT I bought this book because the reviews all said what a great book it was for beginners. Editorial Review

Once they become comfortable making various traditional quilt blocks, many quilters long to take their work a step further. But how do you make the leap from the old favorites to arrive at something new? Joen Wolfrom has been experimenting with that concept for years, developing innovative yet fairly foolproof methods for moving from standard patterns into bold new designs. Her lucid text and abundance of good color diagrams dissect the process clearly and in detail. Beginning with the anatomy of basic quilt blocks, Wolfram demonstrates how to give them a face lift by blending, adding, rotating, varying sizes, stretching, condensing, accentuating repetition, playing with color, and otherwise altering them to achieve dynamic, imaginative quilts. Dozens of beautiful color photos of quilts by many artists supplement Wolfrom's work to provide a gallery of inspiration. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Old-time quilts...
PATCHWORK PERSUASION by Joen Wolfrom is more art book than work book, but interesting nevertheless. If you've been making quilts for awhile you will find this book relatively straightforward. If you've never made a quilt or are not terribly practiced then it will prove less useful. Wolfrom provides an illustration of each of the quilts she discusses in the text (there are many of them) and for some, examples of the basic block used in the construction of the quilt. 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing...
Has Joen Wolfrom ever written a bad book? She's really amazing. I have four of her books now, and have learned so much from each one of them. The ideas in this book have changed the way I look at quilts. She presents practical, clear methods for modifying traditional designs to make more complex and striking quilts. The color pictures alone are worth the price of the book; the quilts are SO beautiful. Be aware that this is a book intended to provide you with the tools to design your own quilts; it does not include detailed designs, piecing instructions, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
This book features some of the most stunning, dynamic quilts I have ever seen. I think the major theme of this book is optical illusion quilting. Most of the compositions aim to tease your depth and/or motion perception. The use of color is also remarkable. This book has inspired me to open up the old scrap bin. Highly recommended! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Imprssionist Palette: Ouiltcolor & design by Gai Perry
This is the best. It takes your breath away how Gai can come up with all these gorgeous inspirational quilts. The book is very easy to understand and English is my second language. She explains it in very simple terms. Your hands will itch to get started. It is like painting with fabric. Start collecting lots of fabric and she teaches you what to look for. You will never look at fabric the same way again. I also like to recoment her 'Color from the Heart' book. You learn so much that you use these books over and over again. Her books are real treasures.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest book of all
This is the most marvelous book I have ever seen about impressionist or watercolor quilts, Gai did realy a great job with this book. It gives you lots of ideas to go on and make some beautiful Impressionist quilts of yourown. I love all her books, and hope she write lots of more in the future, certainly about this type of quilts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Imaginative Quilters
This is a truly wonderful book for the quilter who wants to create art, to go beyond traditional approaches. Ms. Perry's quilts are inspiring -- I went out and chose my fabrics for a new project the day after I got thisbook. She emphasizes the importance of putting certain colors and printstogether to create marvelous impressionistic effects on a quilt top. Thepictures of completed quilts are incredible, the writing instructional andclear, and the suggested projects are exciting and fun to make. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Particularly useful for left-handed quilters!
I am a relatively new quilter, and left-handed to boot. Most other quilting books I've read have illustrations to demonstrate cutting techniques, but the pictures feature the right hand only!Alex, being alefty herself, thoughtfully includes rotary cutting illustrations for boththe right AND left-handed among us.It really helped me with my cutting! I highly recommend it for new quilters and lefty quilters alike.:) ... Read more
