5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly "user friendly" compendium
Pick-A-Pattern Applique & Variations by needlecraft expert Joan Waldman is a thoroughly "user friendly" compendium of pattens, settings, and techniques for personally designing a quilt which will reflect individual stye by changing the blocks in a setting and employing different techniques to stitch or paint the blocks. Pick-A-Pattern Applique & Variations shows that by mixing or matching the pattern pieces, anyone can create a virtually unique, one-of-a-kind quilt with its own distinctive "personality" -- especially when coupled with different methods of hand or machine applique, embroidery, redwork, paint, stencils, or trapunto. With its fifty beautifully designed blocks inspired by 18th and 19th century album quilts, Pick-A-Pattern Applique & Variations is a simply wonderful addition to any dedicated quilter's reference collection. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A patchwork quilt pattern book
I ordered this quite recently and to be honest found it pretty disappointing.
4-0 out of 5 stars Traditional Patterns
The patterns (as the title of the book indicates) are the traditional ones(Ohio Star, Eight Point Star, Clay's Choice)that more experienced quilters will already be famliar with, but it does have those nifty plastic templates (four of them--you'd be surprised how much you can do with so little)which in my opinion are worth the money all by themselves. If you're a real beginner and the patterns are new to you, I would recommend you combine this with Laura Erlich's Complete Idiot's Guide, which I just LOVE. She gives really clear simple instructions on how to piece together the same designs in this book, which this is a little weak on, if you don't already know what you're doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Make -- Yes they are!
The pictures and descriptions are easy to follow. The templates are heavy plastic to stand up to the many hours of cutting I will put them through! The patterns included in this book will keep quilters of all levels busy. Make one block or an entire quilt - the directions for both are included. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Fans of Patrick Lose's colorfully whimsical designs will delight in these 10 bright and breezy quilt projects. Thorough directions and clear photos mean that quilters of varying skill levels can handle most of them. Note, however, that only three of the designs employ straight piecing techniques; all the rest use appliqué motifs that are fused on and then outlined with a machine satin stitch. But full-size patterns are included for every motif, so with a little practice, even novices should be able to master stitching those curves. And in case you want an exact reproduction of Lose's quilts, he's included a chart of his Marble Mania fabric color names and ordering information; for a less exact rendition, simply follow the general color suggestions with your own fabric choices. 5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta love Patrick Lose!
In a word, this book is gorgeous. Patrick Lose has a wonderful sense of color. His designs are the polar opposite of those drab, boring thimbleberries designs. His quilts are bright and uplifting. Who wouldn't be happy with one of these colorful beauties.I highly recommend this book to anyone that appreciates beautiful designs and exceptional use of color.

5-0 out of 5 stars First time purchaser
This was my first purchase through Amazon and I am very pleased with the promptness of the service. The condition of the Mariner's Compass book by Judy Mathieson is excellent and I am very happy to actually own it.I have taken it from our quilters library but always had to return it before I could do much with it.Now that I own it I can take my time, study it, and finally decide on which project to do.Thank you to the family in California for their help in getting this into the mail so quickly.

I have developed an affinity for Mariner's Compass quilts, due in part to the quilts shown in this book. I kept renewing it in the library, and finally bought it.

4-0 out of 5 stars I liked this book
This book helped me with my quilt stitch, but there is just no way a book can really teach a person to quilt. You need to be able to see it in action. But from this and another book I bought I now know I was pulling the quilt too tight in the frame.Beyond the actual quilt stitch there were many great tips.I am glad I bought this book, but I wish my grandmother was here to teach me the actual stitch. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Book for Traditional Quilting
This book gives you accurate traditional patterns -- that is, you make templates and cut each piece separately, and then sew them all together into blocks. There is an excellent variety of patterns, and many are not well-known nowadays, so the experienced quilter need not fear that there will be nothing new to enjoy. At the same time, there is sufficient information for the absolute beginner.5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Quilting books ever assembled
This Dover reprint of the classic quilting book by Ruby McKim is one of the best quilting books ever written. The book describes 101 block patterns in both patchwork and applique as well as two embroidered blocks.Scattered among the patterns are eight short,well-written chapters describing how to piece, quilt and applique.Originally written in the late 1920's and early 1930's the instructions are as good as ever and Ms. McKim's writing clear and pleasant. This is an absolute steal at this price.Another gem from Dover. ... Editorial Review

A riot of color and an array of extraordinary designs mark this volume as a truly innovative and exciting approach to quilt design. Concentrating on color, proportion, and scale; the power of line and shapes; and other principles of good design, Wolfrom teaches how to create quilts that are radically different from the traditional. Landscapes, geometrics, abstracts, florals--every subject yields unusual and striking results. Even those loosely based on standard quilt patterns have been interpreted in surprising new ways. The quilts illustrated (by a variety of artists) are absolutely gorgeous; the inspiration power of these alone is worth the price of admission. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reccomended by the accidental quilter
Joen Wolfrom and her friends are quilt designers and artists and if youwant to be linked into the creative zone of quilting--you've got to take alook at the quilts in this book. There is a color photo of a quilt called"The Dream" in the Visual Dance that I recognized immediately.I'm a writer and the same image has been coming to me in a short storyformat. I bet there are musicians and potters and all kinds of folks outthere that will tell you the same thing.I took a workshop in quilt designfrom Joen last March and it really encouraged me to put in all the designtime before embarking on a quilt. Just thumbing through this book andgazing at the quilts is like a graduate class in fabric design. :)mary cox
