5-0 out of 5 stars For the real do-it-yourselfer.The best there is.
If you want to make baskets from local materials (any locality). Jensen tells you what to look for, how to prepare it and how to make a basket with it. Several techniques, many materials.Everything except bamboo and cane.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for gathering.
This is one of the best books I have ever used on making baskets using recorces available to us in nature. It gives a complete list of different plants that can be used, where they can be found, the time of year to gather them, and how to prepare and dye them. There is also step by step instructions on different projects like coiling, twining and plaiting that one can make with the materials just gathered.I highly reccomend this book to anyone interrested in basketry or natural fibers

1-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide

5-0 out of 5 stars This book covers things that the others don't!!
This book was extremely helpful to me. Not only does it cover thecomplicated stuff such as backwards crossovers but also the things no oneelse talks about. Things like getting up after you fall down! Another plusis the pictures. Everything from proper stopping techniques to the best wayto put on all your gear step by step. This book is a must if you'rethinking about playing ice hockey!

5-0 out of 5 stars Now there's REALLY no excuse for women not to play hockey.
I've never seen hockey skills and strategy described as clearly as Aaron Foeste has in this book (without any oversimplifying or patronizing!). (Bruce Curtis' excellent photos don't hurt, either.) Skate, don't walk! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and Easy to Learn From
Until I bought this book, I had never made a woven basket, only coiled ones. This book has made it easy for me to progress from one to the other. It has great technical drawings, easy to understand instructions, and beautiful photographs. The sections covering terminology, helpful hints, and resources have also been useful to me.This book also has a great variety of patterns, of which "Feather Basket" and "Potato Basket" are my favorites.I recommend The Basket Book for beginning basket makers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it for any one interested in the subject!

5-0 out of 5 stars the BasketBook
This is the BEST beginner book on basketmaking that I have found.I believe it should be in everyones collection. The baskets are lovely and inovative.Even the most simple are elegant and useful.I have used this book until it is in shreds! The intructions are very clear and well illustrated. And the designs and patterns teach as well as instruct.I can`t say enough good about this book.If you intend to sell your baskets, this book will pay for itself on the first sale. And the baskets are charming and very saleable, even the easy ones. There are also some more challanging patterns for the more expirienced. A "must have" for any basketmaker. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a good source for new ideas
I really liked this book for the inspiration it provides. There are so many unique projects using everyday materials found in craft and hardware stores. Some of the projects help beginners to learn weaving methods using simple materials (i.e. newspaper, oaktag) instead of requiring time consuming harvesting and preparation of a natural material prior to learning the basket technique. The introductory notes that explain each method of weaving, such as plaiting and twill, are very helpful and well explained. Where the book fails is in its project directions. They are very hard to follow if you have not used that particular method of basket making. I am fairly experienced at coiled baskets and wanted to try some plaiting and twill. While the introductory notes were very good, the project directions were confusing at best. The book is best for experienced weavers wanting to try a new material or look; it is not a good source for beginning weaving. Still, it is very enjoyable to flip through for new ideas. ... If you love making baskets, or just enjoy looking at them or maybe even collecting them, then this book is a must have book.Law and Taylor have put together the definative book on white oak basket making ( as well assome baskets of other materials). For the accomplished basket maker thephotographs and illustrations can serve as inspiration as well as pattern. This book is absolutely wonderful. It has very nice pictures of the baskets and is very helpful when you are just starting to collect baskets. My only gripe is there are a FEW (a SMALL few) they do not have pictures of. It is a wonderful tool for anyone who loves Longaberger. Very helpful for ebay, etc.

This book is great for someone who has a little experience with baskets already.Someone with no experience can follow as well, but some of the techniques are a little bit harder than in standard basket weaving. The instructions are pretty clear, and if you thouroughly read them, then youshouldn't have any trouble.Overall, this book makes a great addition to abasketweaver's library, and I'm glad that I bought it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars get it before it's gone!
Ms. Schlick is the uncontested expert on native American basketry of the Columbia Plateau (eastern Washington and Oregon) and she knows and has the admiration of many--perhaps all--of the current weavers. Her book finally puts a face and name on the creators of the baskets and sees them as individual artists. I can't believe this book has been allowed to go out of print--get it while you can. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars California Indian Baskets, why did they have certain people as basket makers?
I saw this book at the university and the writers had Mary Wilson, Lena Brown and Sally Ann Dick in the Basket Weavers section.
2-0 out of 5 stars Needs more work.
I agree there are problems with this book, but the section that has the baskets is very beautiful. That part was my favorite. I agree that better research could have been done on the weavers themselves, but the baskets make this book a beautiful addition just on the baskets themselves. I know what the other reviewers are talking about and sometimes it can be frustrating that such things have been done, but the photos of the baskets and basket work is great.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book is not accurate at all.
Lafayette Bunnell, the doctor of the Mariposa Battalion and one of the first persons to encounter Chief Tenaya, wrote "Ten-ie-ya was recognized, by the Mono tribe, as one of their number, as he was born and lived among them until his ambition made him a leader and founder of the Pai-Ute colony in Ah-wah-ne. His history and warlike exploits formed a part of the traditionary lore of the Monos. They were proud of his successes and boasted of his descent from their tribe, although Ten-ie-ya himself claimed that his father was the chief of an independent people, whose ancestors were of a different race."

5-0 out of 5 stars Handmade Baskets:28 Beautiful Baskets
This book is a great basket book - good, clear instructions. In general, I would recommend Lyn Siler's "The Basket Book" as a better beginner's basket book. The projects in "Handmade Baskets"are a bit more advanced and unusual which for a non-beginner makes this a great addition to "The Basket Book".

5-0 out of 5 stars Love This - Very Good Illistration and Photos
I bought this book when I was beginning to make baskets. This book is amust for the beginner and the advanced basket maker. It has severaldiagrams for each of the basket and has at least one color picture for eachbasket.Ms. Siler even has several photographs of variations of thebaskets.I really enjoy this book and feel that it is a wonderful resourcefor all basket weavers.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Resource
This book is fantastic.Hill covers an array of subjects about Cherokee life, family, politics, beliefs, oral traditions, aesthetics - all relating to the central theme of basket-making. Well-researched and documented. While maintaining excellent scholarship, Hill write in a natural, understandable manner free of academic jargon.Essential to anyone studying Cherokee culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars an ambitious and groundbreaking study
A reviewer in The Atlanta History Journal says this book is "destined to become a classic reference text to which future scholars of Native American material culture will always return." It is, the reviewcontinues, "keenly attuned to how basketry figures in the spiritualand material lives of the Southeastern Cherokee." I agree with thereviewer, but this book is more than a study of material culture, it is ahistory of women told by looking at their beautiful, enduring work withbaskets. There is nothing like it for learning Southeastern Cherokeehistory.

5-0 out of 5 stars "beautifully written, brilliantly organized history"
Using baskets, the oldest mother-to-daughter tradition still surviving among Cherokee women, Hill traces changes among Southeastern Cherokees and their environments over a 300-year period. Weaving New Worlds has just beenawarded the Julia Cherry Spruill prize for the best book in Southernwomen's history published in 1997, and was described in the award as"beautifully written and brilliantly organized." ... 3-0 out of 5 stars More Business, Less Gift Basket Oriented
This book does contain some good information about starting your own business as a majority of the information in the book is generalized business information such as business planning, bookkeeping and general marketing. However, I bought this book looking for specific resource information about gift baskets: how to find wholesale suppliers and how to make and package gift baskets. While the author does use some general references about gift baskets, the information is sparse and I was disappointed in the book overall for anyone looking for specific information on gift baskets.
