5-0 out of 5 stars The Basics & Beyond
After I took a 2 hour jewelry workshop at a bead show, I was hooked, and looking for a little more information for reference at home. That's when I picked up Kanan's book. "The Basics of Bead Stringing" now sits permanently on my work desk, easily in reach.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Things Come In Small Packages
Short, sweet and to the point, this little book does not overwhelm or intimidate the beginner.Tools, materials and findings and their applications are explained as well as types of beads and design fundamentals. Technique is explained and illustrated clearly. The author explains which materials to use and more importantly, why each is appropriate.
3-0 out of 5 stars A little too basic
Even though I am new to bead stringing, I found this book to be a little too basic. The projects are very easy, but I had already figured out how to make similar things on my own.I would recommend this only if you feel like you know nothing about bead stringing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Native American motif is a plus
There are some good books on techniques and materials in the shelves out there. There is also a lot of kitsch out there that makes beading look like a second class skill or hobby.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Resource for Beaders
I came upon this gem while searching for ideas for using a packet of porcupine quills which a friend had purchased for me during his travels.I ordered the book online, based solely on a review which sounded promising.Little did I know what a treat I was in for!5-0 out of 5 stars Glorious Teaching
The author has indeed educated this anglo on some very interesting Native American traditions. Her writing is superb and the photographs of the completed projects are divine, thanks to Nancy Palubniak, photographer.Instructions are precise and very understandable. The step by step illustrations are also comprehensive and easy to read.I have been a collector of Beading Books for 12 years and this is my favorite, so far. I highly recommend every officianado of Native American traditions and beadwork purchase this book for their collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You Will Be Guaranteed to Love What you Make!
I had never made a project by Katie Hacker before I read this book. Now, I want to make many, as her designs are really excellent, and her instructions are very clear. I enjoyed the photos of the model wearing the jewelry and I felt as if I were reading an easy, fun, inventive and creative jewelry design book. I particularly liked the choices she gave the reader in color combos--you don't have to stick to one choice when making a project. I also liked the seed bead weaving section as that is something I do not do as yet and would like to learn.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent How-To Bead Book
This is a fablulous how-to book whether you are just starting out or an experienced beader. After reading the Basics you cannot help but make something in this book. The ideas are extremely unique and *hip*.I am in the process of making the Found Objects Charm bracelet and it is fun.Every charm tells a story and is a part of history in my life.As always, I love your ideas, Katie!

5-0 out of 5 stars More than Hip!
I LOVE this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This book has beautiful designs and ideas for your own jewelry creations. I have only tried one pattern so far, which was an easy one itself, with nice pictures to follow. The instructions can get a little confusing just by the way the designer states/words the directions. But overall I am satisfied with the book because I have the same taste in design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and easy
This is another fun and easy to follow directions on learning how to make jewelry... try it you will love it too!

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures, but otherwise disappointing
This book contains virtually nothing BUT pretty pictures. The captions for the pictures are minimalist, and there is no discussion at all of the considerations which went into the color selection and design of the pieces. If you are looking for "inspiration", this book may satisfy you.If you are looking for information, you will most likely be seriously disappointed. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Linear Thinking
If you have an item that needs a handle to hold it, the pattern is in this book.If it is not, then with imagination, the starting point is in this book.If the item is weighty, a macrame strap may be the answer.Do you need leashes for your glasses? There are several patterns that will suffice. There are loomed and off loom straps as well as one that is made with a spool-knitter.If you have never beaded before, some of the straps require practice before starting, but many are able to be compleated on the first try.The diagrams could have been clearer, but they will suffice. All one needs is a bead supplier for the seed beads and thread and you're ready to give it a go. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disapointingly generic and short on detail
This flimsy publication lacks anything beyond the bare miniumum of detailed information on the featured pieces in this exhiition and the accompanying text was dissapointingly generic. There are a couple of really good books on Naga art, such as "The Nagas, Hill People of North East India", but this is not one of them. The word that describes it best is superficial. I am sorry I bought it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed.
The author may have been an innovator in her time, but the book does not hold a candle to the beaded-flower books of today. Large step-by-step color photos are almost a requirement for clear understanding of techniques. This book doesn't provide them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners or experienced beaders!
I learned French bead-flower making from this book decades ago when it was first printed, and I still refer to it.This first Nathanson book gives you a good, solid grounding in the basics. The instructions are thorough and clear.Although there are not many close-up color photos in the book, there are now plenty of online pictures and groups to help with visualization of a finished product.I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn this modern/vintage art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible!
Lots of diverse ideas and techniques for beadwork. The exhaustive reference section is the BEST I've seen in any bead art book. A must-have!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for someone who already knows the basic techinques.
I bought this book to add to my collection. It wasn't my first purchase but after borrowing it from someone I had to have one.Great photos and great information! This book has given me many ideas for various projects!

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes, beads are irresistible
I must agree with Linda -- beads are definitely irresistible. And, like potato chips, you can't have just one.Unlike most bead books, this one does not start with tools needed or techniques.Linda starts with the elements of design, important to all art.You need to know about line, shape, texture, color, and creating a focal point before learning how to make a piece of art.Linda does not neglect techniques, leading you through wire work, bead stringing, beading on a ground, woven beadwork, and the use of polymer clay.To inspire, she includes a 12-page gallery and designer notes. What makes this book a handy reference is the appendix which includes bead sizes, standard jewelry lengths, findings, gemstones, birthstones, design charts, and a metric conversion chart. So helpful! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Already owning one of Ann Benson's bead crochet books, I was excited at the prospect of a new one.The fact that it was a DVD was not clear when ordering.I was still excited to see what was new, but found the DVD to be very poor quality, and at this point does not work at all.
1-0 out of 5 stars It's not a book!
Like the other reviewers, I was astounded when the CD/DVD arrived. It is not very well done - you cannot easily move from chapter to chapter and I am not sure that I want to anyway. It does not contain the basic information I wanted - I feel cheated.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in Texas
I thought this was a "real" book and not a DVD/CD Rom.I have problems with playing it. It stops repeatedly and it is hard to navigate from one chapter to another. It is even harder to jump chapters. Though it was probably my lap top.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beading in the Native American Tradition
A wonderful resource for historic accuracy of Native Beaded Pieces of Art.

4-0 out of 5 stars I recommend the library first...
When possible, I take a book out of the library before I buy it. Hey, 3-6 weeks of free review, can't beat that. Anyway, I would recommend getting this book, but at a discounted price (from here or another online source). If you are like me and do beading as a craft, I personally I found some of the photos and diagrams quite helpful, but some of the instructions and other diagrams were a little hard to follow. If nothing else, you can get design ideas from it! I would rate parts of the text as moderately helpful, depending on your interest level. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars CUTE CUTE CUTE critters
Not content to make only jewelry from beads?Want to start your own bead zoo?Or sprinkle your garden with bead insects?Or plant your garden with bead vegetables and flowers? This book is chockablock full of cute little critters, zodiac signs, itty-bitty purses for your dollies, and space ships for a beaded trip to the stars.4-0 out of 5 stars Great designs-buy it if you love bead art
I bought this book because it is the best among the other bead art books. I actually discovered this book from the library and decided to borrow it and eventually purchased it online. Some designs are easy to do but those 3-d designs are quite complicated.Overall, i gave it 4 stars because i managed to create some really nice accessories for a first-timer like myself and the designs are more unique that normal bead art books. Recommended for those who are really into bead art and must be very patient cos it is time consuming!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Ondori Hit!
This great Ondori published book includes more patterns than you could possibly make in a month of Sundays. There are both "flat" designs and 3-D designs. Some favorites from this book are: the Thumbelinapages (13 patterns),the Bees, Bugs and Butterflies pages (7 patterns) andThe Zoo Pages (13 patterns). In addition, there are 3 pages of patterns forsimple neclaces, earrings, and hair decorations. The directions arewell-written and easy to follow. ... Read more
