Nice basic how-to for new scrapbookers, but dated
Joanna Campbell Slan is apparently one of the most popular scrapbook writers on the market today, and with good reason.She writes clearly and warmly, has a winning style full of humor and a down-to-earth point of view.Her books are informative and knowledgeable; they also fill many gaps in the scrapbooking industry. Not your ordinary Scrapbooking book!
This book is not just a book of great layouts, though it certainly has those!And it's not just tips on journaling either.Joanna Campbell Slan does an outstanding job of teaching you how to tell the stories behind your pictures. Excellent Book
This is the most comprehensive book I can imagine on the subject. My creative juices were inspired with the turn of every page.

Got Bookshelves? Ever Think About Them?
I enjoyed this meticulously researched history of the physical design of books, bookshelves and libraries. Petroski follows the evolution of book storage from pigeonholes used to store scrolls to modern space-saving "moveable-aisle" stacks. In the process, he also covers the changes in the physical design of books themselves and the ever-present challenges faced by libraries throughout the ages as more and more books appear on their shelves. An appendix covers a host of possible methods of organizing your personal book collection - this section is easily the most amusing part of the book.
Windy and boring
I'm as fascinated by history and technology as the next person, but this book seems to be an overstretched monograph, marked by redundancy and needless recitation. Properly edited, the story of the bookshelf would take far fewer pages. There is no reason to cite nine examples to prove that rows of lecterns with books chained to them were common c1600, for example. I'm willing to try other titles by this author--he is curious about interesting things and writes readably--but the subject matter here doesn't fill a book, in my opinion.

Discursive history of book shelving
Although this volume contains much fascinating information about the evolution of the book, Petroski is most interested in how book storage systems have developed.It turns out that books have been stored in more ways--and in more peculiar ways--than an uninitiated reader might imagine.(Would you believe that most books were once shelved "backwards" with their fore-edge out and their title-less spine faced in?)Among Petroski's best chapters are the one that treats problems that arose when books had to be chained to their shelves and the one describing the development of modern library shelving so strong that it could support the library rather than the other way around.Petroski includes many fine illustrations that that well support his theses and educated guesses.Read more

Good, but not the first book.
This is a catalog of patterns for marbled papers, including many traditional and some modern patterns. It certainly isn't exhaustive, but contains may brilliant examples to work from.

Wonderful Ideas
I found this book to be extremely useful.The techniques were all new to me.The one that I am going to try first is the wax resist.I am a little worried about the other techniques that use solvents - I don't know where to buy them, and I don't want anything unnatural that is going to hurt my body.Overall, this is a lovely book.One department that does need a little bit of expansion is making the journal itself.However, I already have a blank journal that I bought from a bookstore beginning with Bor (they offer great blank journals CHEAP) and I am just going to use the techniques.Cheers!!

journal making?
I bought this book wanting to learn how to make a journal.This book did not show the basics.It was a waste of money, the author seemed more interested in presenting cute ideas and making pretty pictures than teaching basics.

The anti-digital antidote
Well our world is just an overabundance of digital virtuality anymore! I love that this book introduces me to so many ways to use my hands in a very tactile form of artmaking. Each of the various bookforms illustrated by Alisa Golden are clearly described with articulate and methodical steps. The bookforms themselves are terrific creativity starters and a nice introduction to the medium for students. As a visual art educator, I've enjoyed bookmaking with students of many ages. Golden's examples are appropriate for middle school, high school, and even college level art bookmakers. I also enjoy her other title, "Unique Handmade Books."

try something else
I would not recommend this book if you are trying to learn how to create your own journals/books. I found this book to be more about the "artist" Alisa Golden and what she has created than about teaching me how to do it. There are examples of books you would never want to create. It does provide some useful instruction, but I thought "Handcrafted Journals, Albums, Scrapbooks, and more" by Marie Browning was much more helpful for what I wanted.

A very good history of bookbinding
Being a small publisher and bookbinder, I found this book very informative.It covers a wide view of bookbinding going back to the middle ages, right thru the 1950s. Edith Diehl has "been there" andknows all the ins and outs of bookbinding. At first some of the materialmay seem dated, but this is a manual for restoring books, using the samematerial and methods of the time period. Lavish Visuals
Anna Morgan has the eye of a czarina when it comes to creating visual richness. The book is full of marvelous ideas great and small, many of which are quite inexpensive. For example, she suggests saving colored foil candy wrappers to smooth out and use as raw material to decorate the covers of books. Another excellent title from Alisa Golden
I own and use in the classroom Golden's previous title, "Creating Handmade Books" already. For my art students who are interested in exploring beyond those bookforms in the earlier title, "Unique Handmade Books" provides me with an excellent companion book. Both titles are clearly written and beautifully reproduced, with lots of wonderful photographs of diverse bookform designs. I can't keep my students out of the books!

Let me begin by saying that I picked this book as a suppliment to my other craft projects. It's a delight, however, I mustn't mislead you, I don't have any other related books on the subject of book binding or creating, and even though I'm an artist, I didn't take a class on the subject in college. There may indeed be more comprehensive texts out there, though I have not gone looking for them. Inspiring!!
This is a beautiful book, abundant with projects that are stimulating and easy to follow.What a pleasure to leaf through--so many inventive techniques and materials.I admire the craftsmanship of the examples and simultaneously plan my own versions of them.This book is inspiring--not intimidating.Read more

Great Book!!!
This book is awesome. It has beautiful pictures, clear diagrams, and tons of inspiration for any bookmaking project.It gives ideas for gifts (journals) and artists books.

Light treatment for beginners
This was the first book I bought for learning bookbinding. I liked the pretty color pictures and the way everything was kept simple.That is also the weakness of this book, as soon as you really decide to get serious there is insufficient information to do a professional job of any type of bookbinding and you end up going elsewhere for more information.But it accomplished my goal, and that is, it got me started in a wonderful hobby.And I still use the technique contained therein for making my own bookcloth and paste.Simple, easy, fun.

Read it, Make it
This book is great! There are so many great ideas of how to make the handmade books. I'm sure many have been thought of before, but this book makes sure to run you through each step in an organized fashion to ensure and strong stable book. This book would have come in handy when I was trying to figure out how to make an accordian book for my photography final. The only disappointment is that there are not more color photos.There are color photos of the DONE books, but no color photos of books in the process.I just think it would help me a little bit more.All in all, this is a great book with good ideas.I'm feeling inspired to make a new book now. ... More of an idea book, or an OK beginner's inspiration book.
This is not a great bookbinding manual for anyone who's the slightest bit serious about making books, but I like the fact that it does make bookbinding seem *approachable* for the beginner. Heavy on the crafty/scrapbooky influence, which isn't necessarily a cheesy thing, but if you've been making books for any time at all you probably won't want to go out of your way for this one.
I don't understand what they see in this book.
I recently found myself making a blank book to fit a leather cover after searching everywhere to find an unlined book that was of the proper dimensions. This is the book I turned to for inspiration and instructions. Only to be sadly disappointed. Most of projects in here were interesting but the "how to" parts of the book were confusing and vague to the point of absurdity and the pictures only made things worse. As a veteran crafter and owner of well over a hundred craft books and a person perfectly capable of programming a VCR or assembling IKEA furniture even when the instructions have been lost. I don't think the fault is with me especially since I had several other people try to decipher the instructions for these projects with no success. I was not happy with this book and if I could do it over again I would never have bought it. There are many fine books on bookbinding but in my opinion this is not one of them.Thank You

Projects you really will be able to do!!
You are going to feel like such an artist after you buy this and make a few of these fantastic books.It's all spelled out for you plain and simple.Even better..........there are pictures for you to follow too!This is a very good book to start out with as the projects are easy and very very creative.I did the fruit book on the cover.It was the first thing I ever did and it came out great!Trust me, I'm no artist! ... Great Supplement!
This book has many great ideas for sharing student work.You can use this for both fiction and non-fiction writing.The data disks were an especially big hit with my students.

An Essential Tool
I have used this resource for several years and have shared with my colleagues.I always tell them they can use any activity in their class except the lock book--that's my special treat.The kids always enjoy taking out scissors and rulers and are always happily surprised by the result.I've used many of these ideas and recommend this book to any teacher that likes hands-on approaches.

Wonderful Ideas
Wow!
