4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and clear instructions.Attractive appearance.
As part of a college class, I have looked at many bookbinding titles.I haven't found any single title that contains everything useful to know about bookbinding.Anyone interested in bookbinding should look at a variety of books. This one is useful because it has an unusually large number of color illustrations.I found both the illustrations and the written instructions to be fairly easy to follow.Well worth looking at.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
After wasting my money on this book, I spend an hour counting the inaccuracies throughout the text. Sloppy workmanship evident in the photos of the bulk of the work should tip off anyone with any more than a rudimentary understanding of hand binding that the book should not be take seriously.Don't let the glossy photos fool you. The only redeeming attribute of this book is to show my students how not to do hand binding.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bookbinding Basics
Rosati's book covers traditional European bookbinding in plentiful full color pictures. He pictures bookbinding tools, basic rules for bookbinding (such as aligning, folding, and counting the paper sheets, sawing, glueing, and etc.), sewing on cords (with a sewing frame or on a stool), sewing on tapes, and binding a simple notebook. He also describes a method I haven't seen before: binding loose sheets with nails. The pictures are the best part of the book. They're very clear and detailed. This book doesn't cover non-traditional or artistic forms of the book. ... Editorial Review

The art of marbling, the author informs us, has general guidelines but no fixed rules. With clarity and humor, she proves extremely adept at explaining the basics (equipment, general how-tos, getting a feel for the process) and provides concise step-by-step instructions for mastering each of 15 traditional patterns. Once you tire of simply gazing in admiration at your work (even relatively simple beginnings seem to produce very complex patterns), turn to the project sections for suggestions on how to utilize your marbleized paper or fabric. Though the finished projects seen here are not nearly as stunning as the marbled patterns themselves, they do offer a jumping-off point for your own adaptations. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Many people find journaling a gratifying pursuit, a way to gain insight, refine observations, or express feelings. Although it really takes no more thana simple blank book to begin, how much more rewarding to the whole creativeprocess to record one's innermost thoughts in a special book invented expresslyfor that purpose, perhaps geared to reflect a special interest or to chronicle aparticular mental journey. 2-0 out of 5 stars pick a subject, any subject
i write this as an experienced amateur book maker and keeper of a "creative" journal.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great - especially if you already know the basics
I've only been playing with book making for a little while....took one class at a rubber stamping show and really enjoyed it.I found this book shortly after that and having been using it, along with a few others to teach myself techniques. The pictures throughout the book are inspirational as well. The first chapters talk to things like the materials you'll use in book making (choosing papers, threads, tapes, adhesives) and how to actually do the book making (stitches, how the binding should look, etc). The nice thing here is that the author gives you leeway saying you could substitute this for that etc. Then the rest of the book is focused on creating specific types of journals/books: travel, introspection, confessions, dreams, poetry, grandmothers book, etc.Material lists are given as well as step by step instruction with both hand drawn pictures and photos of specific parts of the book like the binding. The only thing that I had a little trouble with was some of the terminology since it was new to me but as with other things, we pick that up as we learn.I think this is an excellent book for someone who has the basics under their belt or who has made a book to two before. For the beginner it's a book you can easily grow into, just need some patience. The results are well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive for what it is...
...but what it isn't is a book about writing journals.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential & Delightful
An architect friend of mine gave me this book and some lovely Japanese papers for my birthday seven months ago. I am amazed at the structural quality of handmade books. This author really knows her stuff...everything from specifics on supplies to critical construction details. Other books in this category that I have recently purchased seem to have an unfortunate crafts-at-home quality.5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
I met this author at a book signing for our arts group. She is amazing. On Saturday morning we all made books using techniques from Pages:Innovative Bookmaking Techniques. Wow! I am so impressed. This is my second class on bookmaking and this one was far superior to the first. I'm hooked. Get this book. Get infected! You will love it too.

3-0 out of 5 stars It was "OK"
While this book is a good "how-to" for the some of the basics in book binding, I thought the individual projects were not particularly inspiring. The gallery, on the other hand, was really nice. I think the book would be best for those new to book binding, but able to come up with the interesting details themselves. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bookbinding and the Care of Books
Douglas Cockerell was perhaps the premier bookbinder of the early twentieth century. Many of his pioneering techniques are still used today by hand bookbinders and curators of fine books. In this, his classic exposition of the bookbinder's art, he details the steps used in hand binding of books, various decorative techniques, and provides useful, practical information on the proper care of books. This charmingly written and supremely practical book gives a unique look at an increasingly rare art form by one of it's greatest practioners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keith Smith is a classic for book artists
I recommended this book to another artist interested in working with the book form and when I came to amazon.com to send a direct link I couldn't believe there is only one review for this book. This is a classic in thinking conceptually about the structure and sequencing of a book, as well as thinking conceptually about what a "book" is as an artifact and an artform.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ahead of the curve
This volume, rather than just providing dry (or gluey) how-to instructions on how to MAKE a book, offers readers new ways to THINK about what a book IS, how to make a book expressive beyond the reader's expectations. Smithis clearly a deep thinker, but not without a sense of humor. He is able torip apart the structure of the book by examining our preconceptions, and heis then able to assemble a new vision of what the word BOOK means, and heis THEN able to draw on his impressive skills to actually assemble the bookthat serves up that vision, or to show practitioners how that can bedone.Read more
