4-0 out of 5 stars I also adore Myrtle Reed
This book is a lovely introduction to the Edwardian world.Strong characters, a little bit of comedy and some tears.Mrs. Reed was known for her tearjerker novels, and she did her job well.

4-0 out of 5 stars well-written period piece
Myrtle Reed is one of my favorite writers. The Spinner in the Sun is very typical of her work.It is a very moving novel of a woman who returns to her home after being away for many years. It is sweet, moving andromantic.(I'm embarrassed to admit I shed maybe two or three tears at theend).Miss Reed is very typical for her period so if you want to pretendyou are reading popular fiction in a time other than now -- go ahead, giveit a shot.No offense intended, but its a "chick" book. For somefun try "At the Sign of the Jack 'o Lantern".It was cute, andfunny. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but hard to understand.
I find Marie Ryst's"Handmade Books and Albums: An Indtroduction to Creative Bookbinding", very creative and absolutely beautiful. But I believe the word "Introduction" in the title is somewhat misleading. I am a complete novice in this area, and was looking for a goodbeginners book, but the instructions in this one, were somewhat over myhead.Maybe after working out of a clearer "beginners" book, Ms.Ryst's will be of more help. The photos are lovely and show greatimagination, so I'm sure it will be a good springboard for creativity onceI understand the verbage better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Original Once More
It's always nice to see a received idea get a good kicking, and this book does just that. As a trainee antiquarian bookseller, I was admonished never to describe a hand-bound book before 1800 as being in its "original binding". It was argued that 18th-century English books were originally sold unbound. Individual customers supposedly commissioned bespoke bindings for themselves. It was always a faintly ludicrous scenario (as if every literate gentleman had his own personal bookbinder toiling away in a garden shed somewhere), and Stuart Bennett thoroughly exposes it here. By the time he's finished, you will be thoroughly convinced by his thesis that in Britain at this time probably 80% of books were sold already bound, in various categories of trade bindings, from simple sheep up to expensive red morocco, with varying degrees of gilt decoration, and priced accordingly by the bookseller. It's well-argued, well-illustrated and well over-due. The next step will be for scholars to identify specific bindings and tools associated with the various publishing houses, but they will be building on the groundwork laid down here. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Another bookart book
This is yet another book in a long list of bookwork books and it is basically without merit. The projects are below juvenile level and many of the so-called simple processes [like using PVA glue with a small brush over a large area] are risky for the un initiated. The vertical instruction format is hard to follow. Bookbinding is a REAL craft and this book does it no service. The dumb photographs are staged and dopey. Why cannot anyone take a photo of acraft process without putitng in a bunch of logs or ribbons or leeks?? It is a marvelously weird book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide for Making Fun, Beautiful and Easy Books
Mary Maguire strikes another homerun with her latest book, _Bookworks_.While the photographs are gorgeous and the instructions are -- as usual -- easy to follow, it is the projects themselves which make this book outstanding.Maguire takes the reader from simple to complex bookmaking, using materials as easy to find as paper, cloth, and string. From fabric notepads to wedding albums, suede writing journals to portfolios, Maguire shows step-by-step how to create elegant yet simple gifts or everyday items and throws in some interesting tips as well, such as using foamcore to create sturdy covers.Read more
