4-0 out of 5 stars A great book full of variety!!
This is the first origami book I have bought,Origami Zoo. Before I got this book I had to print heaps of stuff off the internet, and before long I had a huge collection of stuff I put in a folder. I soon found out that all the models I had printed out were way too hard for me, even though I'm around the intermediate to advanced level!! As cool as they may sound, the Biplane always confused me, the Bee always ripped and the Alien always became too small and thick.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of animals - Intermediate to Advanced
There is a great selection of animals to make in this book. Some are very advanced and complicated.Others are easier and more familiar. If you are a beginner, but are familiar with folds and instructions, it is worth giving it a try for a challenge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute excellence... Don't Miss!
Even though the final models are *extremely* complex, the book begins with very interesting texts about origami origins, evolution and approaches to creation; and the models go in progression from the very simplest ones. So actually this is an excellent "transition" book - if you have some experience with origami and have the ambition to try more complex stuff, there cannot be a better book than this one to guide you. The diagrams are crystal clear, and so are the indications. I got this book when I was 11 (Im 24 now), and it is still every bit as amazing an enjoyable as back then!! ... Read more

This book is very descriptive. It shows step by step photos that get rid of any confusion that is prevalent in most how-to books.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR BEGINNERS!!!
I had never made candles before buying this book. This book gives GREAT advice on everything from designs to supplies. The projects shown in the book are wonderfully described, and the pictures are so good you could use them alone if you wanted! The author does a great job of explaining the little things that I never would have thought of on my own. This is a must have for anyone who is new to candlemaking!

5-0 out of 5 stars Author Corrects Oct. 27 Review
I am the author of this book.I am compelled to respond to the negative review written October 27.1-0 out of 5 stars This book is DANGEROUS!
As an experienced gel candlemaker I'm appalled at the dangerous projects this book showcases!Never, I repeat NEVER seat an untabbed wick in gel.HELLO - it's a fire hazard! Speaking of fire hazards, please don't embed many of the items recommended - just because it's "not near" the wick doesn't mean it can't catch fire.4-0 out of 5 stars Some tips are great, others did not work
I loved this book since I saw it with those wonderful pictures and detailed instructions.I particularly liked the floating candle project and since I make my own gel, I made the 9% self standing gel candle according to instructions. The gel worked great, floated well but the candle did not light at all!!!!!I was making these candles for a wedding party and there was no way to light those candles.I changed the wick for a different thickness and nothing worked until I tried again the 5% gel.It burned OK!The candles float well only they are not as stiff as with the other gel. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not just another candle making book!
This is probably the most creative candle making book that I have ever seen.Sure, it has all of the same information about making candles as the other books, but Claire Leavey goes above and beyond all of the others when it comes to making beautiful and unique candles. From the "Coco Cabana" candle which is made using a half a coconut to "Cafe Creme" with it's embedded coffee beans, you won't be disappointed. There are instructions for making Easter candles out of actual egg shells, Advent & Hanukkah candles, candles made using balloons to shape the "mold," garden candles, candles that look good enough to eat and tons of other cool ideas!Leavey explains how to make your own latex molds and how to perform the pouring technique. She also has more "exotic" scent suggestions than I've seen in other books. This book also has a lot of great pictures and step-by-step instructions. If you're a candlemaker, you need this book in your collection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New gel ideas
I gave this book a five stars because of the idea/pics included. It starts out talking about safety, tools needed, and working with gel. It address containers,bubbles,coloring/ fragrances, adding glitter, nesting the candle in a water/flower arrangement, using embeds( wax, clay, glass, agates, beads, wire, sea glass, pins), selecting wicks, making cameos for embeds(very original),using gold leaf inside candles, silhouette candles, color swirling, and gel floating candles.Read more

Editorial Review

Relatively new to the candle-making kingdom, gel is a readily available, adaptable substance that can be transformed into all sorts of fascinating candle looks. By melting the jelly-like goop, adding color and perhaps fragrance, and pouring into a heatproof container with a wick, anyone can whip up one-of-a-kind candles. Dawn Cusick's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative & Beautiful Candles to Make
This book is fantastic,I really love all the information.Excellent!

4-0 out of 5 stars Some ideas worth considering
This book does have some pics with short wicks(which the candlemaker could fix) and one or so of the crafts could be fixed differently to keep the wicks away from embeds. The rose candle on p.49 could still work in a larger container with a shorter wick. The paper used in the candles is against the glass and away from the wick. As with all crafts, the crafter can use his judgement and change around things. That said.4-0 out of 5 stars Creative and helpful
I don't know what either the Michigander or the Nashbabe are talking about.Rankin goes into depth about flash point and the importance of a clip-on thermometer and the dangers of gel.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For Anyone With Basic Candle Knowledge
The Encyclopedia Of Candle Making by Sandie Lea is an excellent book for anyone with the least be of knowledge in candle making. However, with that said you really need to know the basics to get this book because a few things are not explained in detail in the beginning.

3-0 out of 5 stars Expected more pictures of how to
I will agree that this book has a wealth of information, such as history and useage of candles, along with good descriptions of the types of candles, etc.But what it lacked was good pictures showing step by step processes of candlemaking. It described a lot of things in text, but I am a picture person. Also I didn't find anything about Soy candles.Anyway, I was a bit disappointed due to the lack of pictures.

3-0 out of 5 stars For beginners only
If you've never made a candle, or done pour-and-mold soap, this book will tell you how.It will also warn you of every concievable mishap you could encounter. In today's litigious society, I suppose that's required, but it did detract from the rest of the work, in my opinion. Then again, I was looking for pointers and updates on materials, since I hadn't made any candles since the late 1980's.In that regard, it introduced me to soy wax and a few products I did not know existed.

Editorial Review

In Norma Coney's comprehensive guide to candle-making techniques, handsome color photos and detailed text illustrate how to make 40 different kinds of candles, a number of them unusual (marbleized, tie-dyed, carved--even appliquéd). There are some amazing candles here, such as the water candle (in which a pillar candle is surrounded by what look like rolling waves of wax), sand candles, and cut-and-curl tapers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The pictures alone will Excite you!
I really enjoyed this book. The author really goes into details to make your candle making experience as unique and hassle-free as possible. As this books teaches you the basics of container, molded, and taper candles, it builds on more creative projects from there. The book instantly gets the reader excited about making candles for profit or pleasure just by looking at the pictures. Unfortunately, the only reason i did not give it the 5th star is because there were many pictures from other galleries, etc and i wish i had the instructions on making some of those candles.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good basic information
The author provides great information on the history of candles and gives good basic info for folks just starting out. However, I was a little disappointed to find many of the illustrations with no explanation. The candles in those photos were simply credited to the source from which the came. There were a couple of these I would have liked more information about regarding the techniques used. Some of the instructions could have been more clearly demonstrated with photos. If you're a visual person when it comes to directions you may be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to candlemaking
I bought this book so that I could become informed about candle-making before purchasing all of the materials and supplies to actually make candles.I was very pleasantly surprised!Norma Coney covers basically everything and it's very easy to understand. We've been making candles for a few weeks now and I still constantly refer back to this book for information about wax temperatures, tools, etc.If you're interested in making candles, I would definitely purchase "The Complete Candlemaker."As you get more involved in candle making, it won't cover everything that you want to know, but it is most EXCELLENT for a beginner. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Can't imagine it being more complete.
I aspire to make my own candles for special occasions. I picked up this book because it looks like the only one I'll need. It takes you from candle-making (rolled, dipped or moulded) to candle decorating and when you're done with that, you learn to make your own candlesticks, candelabras, pots, holders, lanterns, sconces, and chandeliers. When you're done with THAT, you can create stunning displays based on color or season, decorating your home or for entertaining. Every single page has full color photos of the steps of the project and the finished project. You can simply browse the book as an art book - it's lovely. I love the folk art carving project and gold-leafing project. Bravo for a great craft book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Elegant designs
When Gloria says "complete" she means complete. There are so many projects in this book i wonder if i'll ever complete them all. She has some of the freshest ideas i've seen. Very elegant in the designs and for the most part, easy to follow instructions. A book for all those interested in the elegant side of candles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Creative Book!
I received this book from Amazon, last week, and I am very impressed! Stunning pictures (wich gives us inspiration), great ideas about displays, candles and candle holders. I don`t think this is a beginner book... shegives basic information and some projects about making candles, but it isnot very detailed. I think this is a book for intermediate and advancedcandlemakers. I loved especially the recycling ideas, using old glassbottles, tin cans and so on. 5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe that no one has written a review for this!!
This book starts out with defining different materials, waxes, molds,coloring/scenting,and wicks. It tells you how to prepare the wick;how to level the bottom of the candle;and how to use containers found in all homes. It has sections on beeswax candles, making tapers at home, making your own molds, painting and applique candles, layering candles, making floating flowers by hand, imbedding, gel candles(small section),making stacked candles, hurricane(shell)candles, stencilling, wrapped candle ideas, stick candles for the yard, marbling candles, and frosted candles. This book includes templates, variations and tips in the sections and all pages are either full colored pictures or have multiple pictures. Many of the crafts are even explained with pictures to show the novice how to make candles.I have bought around 30 books on candles and I still like this very much.It shows you how to make candles from nothing but the wax and your hands.I can't say enough about this book... ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This book is the worst I've read.
I make candles and export them for a living. I read a lot of wax candle and gel candle making books ... ! It doesn't fit for anyone one at all, be it an amateur or an intermediate level crafter. Believe me, it's best for you to avoid buying this book. It's not worth your money and time reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars I should have read the reviews
I was very disappointed with this book....I saw it listed on the Internet and it was recommended by some of the web sights. The information in this book is on the Internet and the projects are not that great or challenging. The book has eight pages of color picture.I checked many of the suppliers listed in the back of the book and quite a few no longer have web pages.I truly expected more from this book based on all of the hype.I feel your money would be better spent on another book.

2-0 out of 5 stars You can spend your money better elsewhere.
I was expecting more detailed step by step instructions & full of color photos with lots of inspirations. But instead, most of the info. from the book are knowledge you can get FREE from websites that sell gel candle supplies. There are only a few pages of gel candle examples & they are not too impressive.Read more

Editorial Review

Beginners can easily jump right in and turn out very good-looking candles with the clearly presented instructions in this guide. Nice color photos illustrate both finished products and every step along the way as we learn how to create marbled, layered, aromatic, embedded, appliqued, chip, and several other variations of candles. Most project designs are fairly standard but are nevertheless attractive; a few are more innovative, such as the stacked candle or the lantern candle with embedded dried fruits. Additional ideas (though no instructions) are provided in the six "candle galleries"--double-page spreads showcasing themed tableaux of container, embedded, Christmas, decorated, multiwicked, and floating candles. An introductory section covers all the basics of materials and general techniques. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent basic introduction to candlemaking
After looking through stacks of books featuring floating candles, sand candles, and red white and blue beeswax cutout candles, I settled on this book for its introduction to a variety of techniques. This book answeredquestions I had on how to keep the wick still in votives, pouringtemperature for different types of candles, how to make drip candles, andhow to inlay objects. The author offers useful tricks for completing eachproject successfully accompanied with step by step photographs. The mainthing I love about this book is that I can adapt its techniques to make myown creative projects.
