5-0 out of 5 stars Cute Socks and Scarves
"Once the domain of grandmothers, knitting has, in recent years, become a trendy pastime for people of all ages. Thousands of new people are learning to knit each years and many celebrities such as actors and models are also avid knitters." ~ pg. 17
5-0 out of 5 stars The "only" book you'll ever need!
This is the best knitting book you can have. Excellent instructons to follow with ease.Graphic's aren't too shabby either. Great for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knitting and Crocheting Compendium for Beginners and Intermediates
While I was staying with my son in Tucson during the uncertain weeks that followed the devastation of the Gulf Coast by Katrina, I often wished I had packed along my "Maran Illustrated Knitting and Crocheting" book.Tucson certainly has its wonderful places to explore in terms of knitting, crocheting and other forms of fabric art, but I found myself constantly thinking about this book that I had left on my kitchen table along with other books which I use as constant reference guides. My time in Tucson spent knitting and pondering over technique would have truly been simplified with a few glances at this more than complete handbook.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
I love this afghan pattern book!!It has something for everyone. There are simple and more difficult patterns. There are patterns for those that like more traditional patterns and some that are a little more modern. There are pattens shown that are more colorful and ones shown that are more subtle. The fun information about state fairs is a bonus and makes the book all the more enjoyable!

2-0 out of 5 stars Several errors/misprints...
The pictures of the projects in this book are wonderful; that's what prompted me to attempt to make several of them.I was well on my way into the first one when I noticed that the instructions provided did not yield the results I expected; in fact, the instructions for an entire row were omitted!
5-0 out of 5 stars For crocheters at all levels
This book has something for all crocheters, some patterns are simple single crochet, some ripples, and some granny squares which are great for beginner crocheters. There are also some sampler afghans and aran style afghans for the more advanced crocheter. There are even some done in Tunisian, or Afghan stitch.I didn't see anything I'd consider challenging. But it is not a "how to" book, or a "learn to crochet" book. Most patterns assume you know the basic crochet stitches.

1-0 out of 5 stars Scary designs
I'm not sure why all the other reviews seem to be so positive of the designs when my opinion is the complete opposite. I felt it important that I include my viewpoint. I requested this book from the library just so I could look it over first. The front cover looked cute, but it turns out I should have returned it immediately. Most of the designs (all clothing items) look to me like they should be draped over a table or be a lampshade. Other items would be fine if they were scaled down to about 1/4th the size they are presented in. The models look like they've shrunk under the enormous designs. One outfit looks like a giant doily took over the model's entire back. Basically what I'm saying is, I would never wear the items in this book. They look fun to crochet, but they're just not practical.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth your money!
Several unique and trendy patterns.I've already made several items from this book. This one is worth the money you spend for it!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Some Nice Patterns, but...
First and foremost, the majority of the patterns in this book are really beautiful. But, as always, there are a few items that serve as "filler" (nothing new or extraordinary).Overall, I would have given this book a 4-star review based on patterns alone. However, there are a few problems.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Hip, but Still Nice
I was dying to buy this book since it claims to have "Hip" crochet patterns. So I checked it out at my local library, which I try to do with every book before I buy and possibly regret the purchase. I'm beyond glad I checked it out because the patterns are definitely not hip. They could considered contemporary, but not trendy or hip. They remind me of early 90's or a throwback to the 70's styles and the yarn colors used seemed muted. Otherwise the book is still decent, but shouldn't be bought for the title alone.

2-0 out of 5 stars I'm not quite sure what their definition of "hip" is.
As a younger crochet fanatic (early 20s) I am always on the lookout for patterns that I, or people I know, would actually wear. This book does not have it!Mostly containing hats and scarves it is not a great source for patterns.Cuter items can be found for free on the web.In addition to the lack of "hip" ness, almost all the pattern examples are done in browns, tans, and orange colors making them even more unappealing and looking like something from the 70s.Overall the book seems to cry out "hippie" more than "hip".MANY better books are available out there and I strongly suggest picking out an alternative.I would suggest the "stitch & bitch" series for crocheting - Much Better book!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Hip, and, Uhmmm...
Well, I must first admit that it's a nice and well written book with some fun updated projects. However, it has mistakes that caused great confusion for me. I am a beginner, so I started with a simple hat following the instructions in the book. [...]

5-0 out of 5 stars I cAN CROCHET!!
This book really makes crochet easy for kids. The layout and clor coordination is soo pretty, even beginner adults will love it!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I only been crocheting for 10 months now, but I stumbbled across this book at Border's Bookstore and came on here to buy it. It is simple and easy to understand for begginners. It doesn't cover all the stitches, but it helps you understand the basics and the projects are really cute. I highly recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but limited
This is a wonderful book for learning how to crochet, but keep in mind that it does not cover half double crochet, double crochet and the taller stitches. It covers several variations of single crochet, both increases and decreases, as well as providing ample illustrations for all of the techniques. I understand why they limited it, as they would have had an enormous book if they covered every aspect of crochet in the same level of detail. Still, it might be confusing for those who learn from the book when they're confronted with patterns that list hdc, dc, tr, dtr or trtr among the stitches. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
This is the best gallery of baby afghans in one book that I have seen. There are so many wonderful afghans, it is too hard to choose which one to make. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. I have several great nieces and nephews being born and each will love their afghan from here. Would highly recommend this book to the beginner as well as advanced crocheter. My Mom loved mine so much, I ordered one for her too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Best Baby Afghans (Leisure Arts Leaflet, 2853)
This is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys crocheting. This soft covered book contains the best collections of baby afghans and throws for little girls and boys.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, beautiful patterns
This was one of the first books of crochet patterns I bought and it continues to be a valuable part of my pattern library.I am still a beginning/slightly intermediate crocheter and I have been able to make several of the afghans in this book with no problems.Instructions clear and photographs helpful.I am currently making the "Simply Beautiful" shell pattern afghan in Bernat's "Baby Coordinates" yarn in pale yellow, and it's coming out gorgeous - it almost looks like lace, but the pattern couldn't be easier. I'm sure this book will supply many more baby gifts in years to come. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth it!!
This book is excellent.I am a relatively new crocheter and I have been looking for resources to help me expand my abilities. This book has excellent photos of a variety of different stitches.Their explanations are easy to understand and the projects are modern and cool.Great!

5-0 out of 5 stars best book ever!!!!!!!!!
this is an awsome book my mom had to
5-0 out of 5 stars Ready, Set, Crochet is a great reference book
I found this book to be a great reference not only for the basic crochet stitches, but also for some more interesting and advanced stitches. It even has a little library of stitches with instructions and photos.Additionally, each section "lesson" has a project that uses that stitch or skill, for example a hat to learn both crocheting in rounds and the bobble stitch. The spiral wire binding and fold-up stand are also neat features. The photos are very good and help understanding the instruction.I highly recommend this book for both beginners and more advanced crocheters. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Jane Snedden Peever is my favorite crochet designer
When I picked up this book I was surprised at the designs. They look great and straddle that fine line between conservative and boring. The yarns used are easy to find and make substitutions, and the directions are clear and easy to follow. Most of all I would wear any of the sweaters in the book. Can't wait to start crocheting more aran sweaters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of more Aran-style designs with new stitch patterns
Jane Snedden Peever's More Crocheted Aran Sweaters provides a sequel to her popular Crocheted Aran Sweaters, providing a wealth of more Aran-style designs with new stitch patterns. Thirteen sweaters and vests are created with the look of knitting cables and moss stitches, plus some crochet patterns. The stitches guide helps make professional, polished results from even the most basic beginner efforts, while the styles are contemporary and appealing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Aran Sweaters part 2
This is the second volume of crocheted Aran sweaters. The first offered a variety of patterns and styles that tempt crocheters of most skill levels to try an Aran sweater. This volume has more of a "traditional Aran" feel to it and seems to be for the more skilled crocheter, with the emphasis on cables and twists. The instructions are clear.Experienced crocheters looking for a traditional Aran look will find much to make in this book. Less experienced crocheters will be happier with the first volume. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Inovative use of the traditional granny
The 101 Granny squares do give several inovative uses for a traditional granny square including belts and headbands. The 101 is a bit of a stretch, however, as some of the squares for both of the ponchos are very ordinary and definitely monotoned. The directions are clear, though some projects are split across pages. The pictures are all in color and illustrate the final products well.A few of the projects are done in thread, which would make them incredibly time consuming for the final output. If 60 squares and a few really great projects will make you happy, you will probably enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars contemporary granny
Quite a worthy collection and best are two by Jackie Young of a beaded granny necklace with gold wire and her bag lady. The beaded poncho is worth the price of the book with unusual squares from several designers. A few designs have been in other collections but if you're into grannies, this is a must purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Granny Squares RULE!!!!!
Editor, Carol Alexander, has put together an extremely creative collection of 101 crocheted granny squares and 43 patterns made from these clever geometric shapes. Using materials ranging fromworsted to wire, I was delighted to see the updated versions of ponchos, sweaters, hats, scarves, bags, and headbands. There is a beautiful lace vest made with Luster Sheen. There are baby items, greeting cards, household beauties, afghans, pillows and tablecloths. The showpiece of this book is Bag Lady, a free form and granny square purse that is adorned with a fiesty, crocheted Lady! I love it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Republish this book!
Like others, I call to the publisher and to the author of this book to bring it back to the public. I have a 1992 copyrighted version of this book and it has become a "bible" of sorts for many projects. Put this back on the market again!
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Crochet Book Ever
After reading a library copy of this book, I knew this was a MUST HAVE book ! The publisher needs to definitely do a reprint of this book, as I know that there are many others that would love to have a copy of it for themselves ! It show us crocheters many different types of stitches that most of us would never think of trying otherwise and in an easy to understand format. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
Carolyn Christmas comes up with the neatest patterns. This book is a little one but packed with lots of great patterns. I have to admit, the baby hat on the cover is my favorite pattern, but there are plenty of tempting patterns in this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Has a wide variety
Although the physical size of Carolyn Christmas'(don't you just love her name?)bookis small, the content is large, easy beginner items as well as something for the more experienced. What I especially liked was that there were T-shirt tops that even a novice could do, but the expert would be satisfied as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars C- effort, lots of issues learning with this book
As a new knitter attempting to teach myself, I thought this book would help me become proficient in no time. Boy, was I wrong! Granted, I'm only on the first project, but I feel I'm lucky to be squeeking even the essentials out of this poorly-written book. Some of the instructions (even illustrated) are unclear and confusing, and I was completely lost on the selvage information, which was not illustrated; they actually used a selvage skill in the first project! I gave up that part of the instructions after about 10 rows - it was impossible to see what I was doing and it made absolutely no sense.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginner or even moderate knitter
I would probably give 4.5 stars if possible...I really like this book overall. I agree that it's not likely that anyone would like all of the patterns in here (especially the fringe top!), but I think there is something for everyone. I have made the "flaps or no flaps" hat (no flaps for me), the tote bag, and the slouch socks. There are several other patterns I plan to try eventually.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good beginning knitting course
This book looked ideal for my needs (rank beginner) when browsing in our local knitting store, so I bought it.It's turned out to be a mixed bag, but I'm still glad I bought it and I'm still using it as my primary knitting course to teach myself to knit.

1-0 out of 5 stars The book was not very informative also many wrong directions
I was very disappointed in the book, some of the directions were wrong which is annoying when you are trying to make something, I would not recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.
Once again I got suckered into thinking a book was going to give me more technique and less in the way of patterns.I had wanted to know more about actual conversion methods, and this book didn't quite hit my mark. However, for a novice or intermediate crafter, I think this book would be okay.

3-0 out of 5 stars Knit to Crochet?
This is not the book to buy if you're looking for a way to convert knitted patterns to crochet. There are pictures of knit stitches next to the crocheted counterpart, followed by a crochet pattern which imitates the stitch. Each stitch pattern is followed by a project idea which uses that pattern. The book has some very nice projects which will appeal to crocheters of all ages (hence the 3 stars). So get it if you're looking for some new project ideas. ... Read more
