Instant Inspiration!
I can recommend this book because the photograps are well done, as are the instructions. The author obviously knows her stuff and she knows how to share it with others!
Not for the inexperienced bead crocheter
I bought this book to learn how to crochet with beads. It is not really a "how to" book, as it is advertised. It has a section on basic crochet stitches (without the beads), but I have been unable to incorporate beads. I will buy another book, learn how to bead crochet, and return to this one when I get some experience.

Disappointing
I am new to bead crocheting, although I have been crocheting with yarn for many many years. In an attempt to "expand my horizons" I bought this book after glancing through it at the library. Well, when it came time to make something "simple," I struggled and struggled with the instructions (as did my daughter H), but got nowhere..the bead pattern indicated in the picture simply didn't materialize.In another review posted here someone indicated that critical information about the positioning of the bead was lacking from the instructions! Good thing I read the review (although it was AFTER I'd bought the book)!Now I realize why I got nowhere...the instructions are VERY poor...don't bother with this one...I'm going to try another 1 or 2 recommended by other reviewers... ... Great photos, projects so-so, instructions lacking
It's nice to see creative photography applied to crochet. The swatches in the introductory section are presented in gorgeous artistry. However, the black-and-white, somewhat washed-out photos in the instructional section are not as helpful as they should be, and sometimes you can't tell which stitch the pictures go with. And what does she mean with the arrows on step two for double (or maybe half-double) crochet? There is no indication about wrapping the yarn before the final pull-through. For clear, helpful instructions, try Sharon Silverman's book Basic Crocheting instead.
Great tips and pics
This book has been wonderful for me.I had no experience with crocheting but was very interested in learning how to make things like my grandmother had.The learning section at the beginning is full of full color pictures and wonderful explanations.It is very well rounded and I am sure I will complete at least one each of many of the projects within the book.

Not for a "Newbie"...
Although I love the projects in this book, and the photography is fantastic, the title and description would lead one to believe that this is a good book from which to learn crochet. I believe this was the intent of the author, but it falls short in a few areas. First, the beginning steps are explained too briefly, and leave a lot of things out.Secondly, the descriptions of the stitches are written assuming that the reader already has a basic knowledge of crochet, using terms that do not make much sense to a first time crocheter, (and with tons of typos!) ei. "Inserting you hook into the ring, work as many stitches into the ring as your instructions tell you."Fine for a seasoned crocheter, but a bit confusing when working stitches into a ring has never been explained!

Great for a quick crochet 'fix'!
This is a wonderful book for quick beautiful Afghans!From very basic to more advanced, there is something for everyone.All patterns are worked with two or more strands at a time, while still providing a wide range of patterns!There are basic filets, granny square, 'mile-a-minute' type, and everything in between, there are even baby patterns.Tons of fun and hours of enjoyment!Enjoy!

very good book on irish crochet
Althoughthis book has very few pages I find it to be very informing about Irish crochet. And at a good price. The instructions might be confusing for a beginner as another reviewer has mentioned but with some effort and patience you can get results.

So many patterns but none to make!
I honestly thought that out of 100 hats, I would be able to find quite a few to knit and crochet. How wrong I was. Obviously I expected some novelty hats, that is par for the course with the amount of patterns featured, what I hadn't expected was that there were going to be so few really nice hats. The children's hats are mainly novelty and make the kids look daft. The adults hats are either overly fancy or just plain ridiculous. I would have liked to have seen a few really practical plain patterns that could be adapted by the knitter/crocheter. I have abandoned this book, and have had to buy not one but two more books to find any nice patterns. On the plus side, they are well photographed, the patterns are easy to follow and the layout is great. Very disappointed overall.

One of the Best Crochet/Knit Books on Hats!
This book not only has nice patterns, but the book itself is laid out nicely. There is a color photo of every pattern, each pattern has its own page. It presents itself as very modern, clean and easy to follow. I ended up buying two because the first one was bought as a gift for my sister but I didn't want to part with it!

Good book!
I actually really like this book! At first I was doubtful because this is a knit and crochet book-which usually means really weird crochet designs and really nice knit. Unfortunately I don't knit, but I figured out of 100 hats there has to be SOMETHING I like.

mistakes galore!
I did one project in this book.It had mistakes in the instructions in every part of the construction.The publisher passed my request for clarification on to the author.She never responded.

A NewSlant....
This book has some very different patterns in it, using some of the newer yarn that's available - I like that! And even for someone like me, who has been crocheting for over 30 years,there are tips, conversion charts, and the like which I've never seen in one place like this -- or put in such clear terms. There are also some very basic instructions included for beginners. This is a book anyone can use, regardless of their skill level, and I'd recommend it. Very easy to follow!

Want tons of compliments on your handbags?
I love this book! Lots of neat purses that are fun to make. I've encountered a few errors in the pattern instructions, but they're easy to figure out how to correct. The author uses expensive yarns, but you can easily substitute with Lion Brand or other good, less-expensive brands. 20 stitches and variations
I am a bit disappointed with this book sure it tells and shows how to make the basic stitches and then goes into a multitude of variations and combinations of those basic stitches. This is fine if you want ideas of how to use your basic stitches, but with a title like this I expected 300 stitches each unique and adaptable to circumstances. I guess my hope was a bit off. If you want lots of repeat stitches and like making doilies etc this is the book for you.

A must have for EVERY crocheter
Don't be without this book, every good crocheter has this one and for good reason.Nice clear pictures and graphs of all the stitches, symbols, all the basics and more.

If you want to design your own itemsthis is a must
This book has very clear, consise instructions for 300 stitches; including textured and smooth stitches, motifs, tunisian, edges and filet. If you want to design your own item, it will tell you how many mulitples you need to make the particular stitch pattern across your row.It will also help inspire you to try new stitch patterns and techniques.The tunisian and filet instructions were very interesting, but the whole book is worth every penny spent.

Excellent Afghan Book!
I Absolutely L-O-V-E this book!ALL the patterns are Wonderful - even the knit ones!This book is a MUST for the serious afghan maker.Definitely on the Very Top of my pattern book pile!

Afghans to KNIT and crochet???
I agree with the previous reviewer - the crocheted afghans are pretty, and if you're looking for granny-square versions, this is a wonderful source.
superb grannies
Of the 100 afghans, most are crocheted and of those 42 are granny squares by Janie Herrin to whom the book is dedicated. All projects have a full color picture and written out instructions (nothing charted). Almost all are made in worsted wt yarns. Some projects have appeared before in leaflets and the Herrin squares were once available online but they are now beautifully published here. Cover photo doesn't do the book justice. A Great, Great Place to Start!
I can't believe no one has reviewed this book yet. It's fantastic. The projects are great, and very cute. There are tons of very nice, professional pictures throughout the book to show you what your project is supposed to look like at various stages. The instructions are clear, and well written. I really can't say enough about this book. I am not a very experienced crocheter, so this book was perfect for me. I also love the other book in this series, "First Knits", and I highly recommend that as well. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the fact that the yarns the book calls for are a little obscure here in the US (the book is British in origin ) however, there's always the internet as a means of getting the yarn, and I've had no problem finding appropriate substitutions. Definitely recomended.

Imaginative patterns
This is perfect for little ones, especially the patterns on the cover.Although I can't make them for my granddaughter yet( she is still very small), you can bet that I will be, so many cute patterns that will be enjoyed by the babies.

Great basics
This is a wonderful book. My girlfriend has it, and having looked through it, I am going to buy it for myself. It has some beautiful patterns for beginner crocheters. Basic patterns are usually pretty unappealing, but these are gorgeous. The instructions are easy to follow too.

Little disappointed. . . We'll see
The descriptions and ratings of the book made me think the designs would be cuter than they are.For the most part, the designs look like old fashioned bathing costumes with a couple cute hats, done in single crochet.Before I got the book, I was all fired up to make something for my daughter, but I don't like the way the outfits look on the kids in the photos.Truthfully, not my taste at all.I suppose the pattern simplicity has something to do with kicking the jumpsuits out before the child outgrows them.Even so, the outlined construction process looks long and tedious for an outfit that might be worn a half dozen times or less.Unless you crochet like the wind and like old fashioned, fugly clothes, this probably isn't the book for you.

boring
If you're into redesigning patterns, you'll love this book...If you want it all spelled out for you, you probly won't.The problem with this book is (like with MANY other books coming out right now) is that it seems all to be single crochet with no variations.I've noticed this in the women's sweater books also.I think the pattern makers think we're stupid, and are trying to give us something we can actually DO, I dunno.
LOVE IT!
Okay, I maybe overdoing it a little as I have not much background on crocheting. But I am just so excited on finishing up this particular design for my twins.
