2-0 out of 5 stars Caution
I've been Crocheting for over ten years but a friend wanted me to make the Irish Lattis pattern. And I found a ton of mistakes. The way they have the pattern written does not match the picture at all and they tell you that the wrong side of the afghan is the right side sometimes.I wouldn't suggest getting this book unless you have a little more experience and can easily fix the problems otherwise you might get very confused with the instructions.I'm assuming since that pattern is so off there are mistakes in the other designs as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars need help finding a patters
I purchased an afghan that is not finished. It is a granny square afghan. It appears to me to be a 4 leaf clover type . i need to find the pattern as it has several squares missing. I am having troublefiguring it out. If any one knows what book it is in please let me know so i can purchase the book or the pattern. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Herrschner's Best
I snagged this book at my local craft store when I saw the Herrschner's label.Thumbing through it, I saw dozens of beautiful, unique afghans, most of them crochet.Two-thirds of the book is dedicated to adult afghans, which as one reviewer pointed out will take some time to make.I am in the process of making the Afghan-Stitch Aran, which has cable, diagonal, and diamond patterns worked in the stitches. What I liked about this book is the myriad of styles and the easy instructions. There is something for everybody.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great snowflakes!
I love these snowflakes! This is the first time I've crocheted with thread and a steel hook... before that, the finest yarn I had used was sock yarn.I've done two snowflakes so far, and they've both come out great. Each was using #10 thread with a #7 hook, and took 1-2 hours to make while watching TV.I think I'll stick to this thread and hook, even though other patterns call for #20 or #30 thread... I'm not sure I could manage with thread that thin.Barbara describes how to starch the snowflakes, but mine seem stiff enough that I think I'll skip that step.I'm not sure if there are mistakes in the instructions, or if I just don't understand some of the steps, but it doesn't seem to matter. So far my guesses seem to produce beautiful results, even if they might not be exactly what the author intended.Guess what everyone is getting for Christmas this year... assuming I can bear to part with the snowflakes! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite and artistic bags
I agree with other reviewers that this shape of book is not the easiest to read, but I flattened my copy and put a weight on it to hold it open while working... no big deal. It's what's inside that counts!
3-0 out of 5 stars great stuff, bad format
I have to first say that the photos and projects in this book, as well as the others in the Beadwork series, are gorgeous. They are not your typical jewelry items:they show unique colors and mixtures and ideas.Love that part. What I hate about the book is the format...it is long and skinny with a tough spine. In other words, extremely difficult to hold, much less do a project from. It's so narrow that the inside page closest to the spine often cuts off certain words.I tried going to office max to have one drilled to be loose leaf, with the spine cut off, but it still makes for awkward work. Why they couldn't make this a full size book with a lay flat spine is beyond me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Designed to appeal to all levels of beadworkers
Jean Campbell edits Beaded Bags, a survey of 30 bag projects designed to appeal to all levels of beadworkers. These aren't just the usual rectangular bags; they are especially notable projects in presenting a diversity of bag styles and designs, from clutches and drawstring purses to wrist bags and market bags. Techniques range from embroidery and loom weaving to bead crochet, with plenty of colorful photos and step-by-step clear instructons. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hip Patterns and Great Instructions
Kim's book is geared towards teens and tweens, but everytime I show it to grown ups there are choruses of "I'd make that!" or "I want one of those!" I teach a lot of kids and teen crochet classes, and this is always a popular book in the classroom. There are clear, easy to follow instructions, great patterns and a fun playful style. And it's affordable for kids and grownups too!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm hooked now!
Kim was the first person to teach me how to crochet correctly (you don't even want to know what I was doing before)! This book is the next best thing to having her with you in person. The photos are clear, the projects are fun and if you need a refresher course, you'll find everything you need to know. Love it! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Begin with another book
Although the patterns in this book are beautiful, you should work with another book if you're a beginner. These patterns were written by/for thread companies that have long been out of business. The gage is very difficult to get correct on some of these and it took some research on thread to needle equivalents and a number of restarts to get going on a doily that would lay flat.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad investment
I was attracted to the hat and scarf on the cover. When I opened the book, I was even more impressed with the fun look of the items. Boy, am I sorry I bought this book! I don't know if all the patterns are as bad as the one I tried because I haven't looked closely. You name it -- this pattern has everything wrong with it. It says decrease instead of increase and knit instead of purl. It leaves out instructions. It is overly complicated and ill-conceived. I can't figure out how this book went to press.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Beginner
I got this book on the misguided notion that the chunky projects would be more beginner oriented. However, most projects require intermediate skill. There seems to be quite a lot of cabled hats and scarves here. The beginner level projects are things you can probably figure out on your own. There is one beginner level hat (on the cover) that looks interesting and I may make it soon. There are also these adorable baby hats (Ice Princess) with furry cuffs.I'd like to do something like that in adult sizes. The Water Lilies scarf is beautiful and is on my to-do list. The On the Fringe scarf may actually have some merit, but the color choices shown are soooo amazingly unfortunate, it's hard to get past the hideous-ness of it to see.All in all, I think the basics of a lot of these projects are in books you probably already own.But it's worth having if you can find a good sale price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great baby patterns!
There are some really unique and cute baby patterns in this book, especially the blankets. Each project includes a blanket, hat and booties that coordinate, which is nice. Most patterns are pretty easy, and the instuctions are very easy to follow. The only downside for me, is that about 1/2 the patterns are crochet, and I don't know how to crochet. But the knitting patterns are so cute that I still would buy the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent baby patterns!
I have several pattern books for knitting and crocheting baby items and this is now my newest favorite! The baby sock pattern alone is worth buying the book--the socks were easy to make (and I am NOT a sock knitter!) and they actually fit a newborn. I have not made all the items in the book yet but the things I have made were easy and fun. And I love the fact that it has both knitting and crochet patterns--I think more and more people are beginning to do both and it's nice to have a book that offers both. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute projects, great portability!
The presentation of this delightful little book is quite original: a sturdy chipboard box with attached lid opens up to reveal 21 folded cards made of heavy cardstock, 20 of which are devoted to matching hats and scarves that you can crochet with ease.
3-0 out of 5 stars Strange Hats!
When I opened the box of patterns I couldn't believe what I saw. The first hat pattern was something called Madison Ave., made with Kureyon yarn. I immediately thought of the I Love Lucy episode where Lucy is in Paris and is coveting the lastest French fashion. Ricky gets a horse feed-bag and passes it off as a designer hat. Well, this is the hat! Then there is On the Boardwalk, a 12 oz., oversized 2-toned, porkpie hat that would defintely get you mocked and pointed at in any neighborhood. Another goofy hat is Fun City, a long stocking cap more suitable for a child than a grown woman. Tennessee Hills, a floppy brimmed number, needed the addition of a plaid bow to hide it's hideousness. There are also 2 berets, 2 open work granny stitch hats, a hat made with a granny squares border, 8 more cloches that all look the same, and a couple of others that defy definition. The only hat I liked was Windy City Chicago. I made 4 of these already. But beware of the hook size. It calls for a G/7 4.5mm hook. Most G hooks are G/6 a 4.25mm.
5-0 out of 5 stars 20 hat and scarves sets
Fantastic designs on easy to use take along cards.Mix and match the hats and scarves so many possibilities here. They have included a great carry along card that has the hook sizes, abbreviations, and the standard yarn weight system.Would be a great gift or even a way to learn how to use different types/weights of yarn. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good collection of beautiful afghans!
Another wonderful Leisure Arts collection! This book really does offer something for everyone. Many Afghans are worked while holding 2 strands, which always makes for quick rewarding projects. There are also several strip/motif patterns that are good choices for working on the go.Sophisticated Swirl on page 66 is especially stunning, it will impress your friends and you because it looks very complicated but is actually very simple!

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll Love this Choice
Delightful book, lots of large hook with 2 strands of yarn patterns, as well as mile-a-minute patterns.Easy to follow directions, and quite a few standard type patterns for the traditionalists among us.You won't be sorry if you purchase this one.All crochet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow instructions, great variety
I really enjoy this book. There is a variety of styles, sizes and pattern types to try out. Also, the book tells you the yarn weight and gauge, not the brand of yarn, so substitutions are easy. The only draw back is that there isn't any rating system as to the difficulty of each pattern - a careful reading is necessary before starting any project. ... There are some things in here that I would never make, but there are also some nice patterns I would like to work up (afghans, smaller things, etc) so it's obvious that the publisher tried for some broad appeal. If you don't have a book like this, then purchasing one might be worth your while.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty tatted snowflakes
Here we have a collection of snowflakes which uses a fairly varied range of techniques including tatted beadwork. The book includes basic instructions for tatting and the patterns are written in longhand with no diagrams.
4-0 out of 5 stars These tatted snowflakes were are a delight to find.
The individual photographs are close enough to count the stitches without using the written patterns. The designs range from beginning to advanced skills.Instructions about the process of tatting are clear and easy tofollow. It can be difficult to learn to tat from a book, but notimpossible. There are two 2-dimensional snowflakes and a few with beadsand ribbons, perfect for holiday decorations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the winter season!
I bought this book last fall and used it constantly throughout the holiday season, and I plan to use it to make more snowflakes during the remaining winter months. The patterns are varying, although I would like to have seena few more and some that were more like actual snowflakes. You can tatthese patterns in almost any size thread and add beads, glitter, sparklythread to make them more lifelike, and they make great ornaments for theChristmas tree or decorations for windows or gifts. 2-0 out of 5 stars Not how I define "fabulous"
The cover announces "new styles, new looks, new yarns".Okay, I'll give them the "new yarns" from when these ponchos came around the first time, but the looks and styles are just the same old same old.

5-0 out of 5 stars just wonderful
I hesitated on buying this book because I didn't care for the earlier one he did called the New crochet. This is not only a wonderful book on crocheted ponchos but it's one of the best crochet books I've ever seen. Looking at the book is like watching the fireworks in Hongkong which just keep on coming. Here every poncho is a winner. Lots of interesting yarns although it's easy to substitute with their yarn equivalents. Great instructions on doing them including the difficult ones of whichonly 4 are in that category. Almost all the designers are new to me but according to their bios they've been crocheting from birth. Even ifyou're a beginner, buy this book now. How about doing another book on sweaters? ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not entirely for scraps
I would have given this book 3.5 stars if I could, but realistically, that would have been because I have an extensive crochet book collection and when I purchased this book it was solely for it's value as a scrap project book. Now that that's put into perspective, I think that the average crocheter would give this book 4 stars.Read more
