THE BEST beginning knitting book out there
This book is a fantastic book for a new knitter, or for a "lapsed" knitter who needs to review some basic skills.The book uses lots of excellent, close-up, high-contrast color photographs to illustrate every step of the knitting ( and crocheting) process.
Simply the best
With its clear, color, step-by-step photographs and coverage of nearly every knitting technique a beginner or even an intermediate knitter might need, this book--which has now been reissued under a different title, Maran Illustrated Knitting and Crocheting--is simply the best knitting instruction book I have ever seen for those of us who learn how to do things by seeing rather than by reading.I've given multiple copies to fellow knitters, and I have two copies myself in case one actually falls apart from heavy use.It's an unassuming volume from a small family-run press that may well become the indispensable foundation of your knitting library.If you are a visual learner who wants to knit but haven't learned because you don't have someone to teach you in person, this book is the answer.Enjoy!

This is one of my favorite reference books.I'm a visual learner and the color photographs with contrasting yarn colors are wonderful!Lots of other books have ink illustrations and I find those difficult to translate sometimes.I also like the fact that it has crochet info in it too because some knitting patterns require basic crochet skills. ... Love the "Seasons" series!
This is the fourth "Afghans for All Seasons" book Leisure Arts has put out, and it is my favorite.I've made 4 blankets from it for gifts, and there are still others I want to do!The directions are easy to follow, using the usual abbreviations in all Leisure Arts books.

Another classic...
I really love these books for their variety, I want to make everything I see in these Leisure Arts books.I would recommend them to anyone, especially if you want to get addicted to crochet books.

Terrific book on an almost lost art
This book opened a whole new dimension of crochet for me.--Beautiful, mind-boggling stuff. The directions are quite accurate although rather different from modern crochet books. Loved it!! Elegant Crochet
I am really into crocheting with thread and this book did not disappoint or leave that "hunger" wanting.From simple to complicated.All beautiful patterns.

Gorgeous but problematic
A wonderful resource of vintage patterns for crocheted openwork. As most are based on the principle of joining numerous small pieces ("motifs"), the patterns are easily adapted to other uses, such as bedspreads, curtains, et cetera. Some of the simplest motifs can even be rendered in heavy yarn, lending a "period" touch to afghans for the home.

a great follow-up to the first book, making ribbon leis 2 continues on its lei making path, this time challenging the reader with more complex and time-consuming leis. these may take a long time and require effort, but the finished product is truly breathtaking and very realistic. Wonderful
I used to get Magic Crochet pattern books years ago, that only had doilies.Later on they added other crochet patterns, scarves, sweaters, etc. which steered me away from them.I have not been able to find a doily pattern book with a visual pattern until Pineapple Lace: with complete diagrams.I would recommend to anyone who crochets, beginner or expert.It is so much easier to look at the pattern instead of having to read it.

Pure Class
Something NEW and wonderful!

I would not consider myself a beginner, but perhaps I am.After getting this book for Christmas I was thrilled to get down to work while waiting for my next arrival.BUT, the stitches were all wrong, they called single stich double and double treble, and so on.I have tried two of the projects from this book and none of them have some out right.
Great ideas!
I look at a LOT of knit and crochet books.This is one I am willing to buy.It has wonderful ideas that are a step above the standard baby crochet style.I found the instructions easy to follow, and the results rewarding.Even the book itself is a compact square shape, which fits easily in a project bag.I am an intermediate crocheter; it is possible that this book is a little beyound total beginners.But buy it anyway to get inspired! ... Beginners Only
This book might be a good thing for a beginning crocheter...but there really isn't a lot here for an experienced one.The designs look better on the afghan they have than made up into sweaters on the model.I've had the book a long time, and have yet to make anything from it.

Very Creative designs
Despite all the pattern complaints, I find the book to be excellent and although I have not made each and every pattern, so far I have not found any mistakes.This book is full of clothing design information, which makes it worth a place amongst your crochet library.

Great learning tool, so-so patterns
This book has become my crochet bible! When I got this book I didn't know anything about crochet and had no one to learn from. Within a week I was creating bobbles and popcorns and trying the various stitches in the learn-to-crochet afghan. I've had the book for 3 years now and I still refer to the stitch directions when starting a new project.

Look past the outdated color combos....
Yes, the colors in some of these afghans pretty much scream "late 70's early 80's", but if you can look past that and visualize some of these patterns in currently available yarns, there are some gems here.Easy, classic patterns.I crocheted the "Desert Sands" pattern for my 6yo daughter using a bright, rainbow variegated yarn from Red Heart and it came out beautifully, so much so that her younger sister wants a matching one!Some really great patterns here for beginners.Worth having in your pattern library.

A little bit outdated for me
I was excited by the other reviews and bought the book, but I'm dissapointed with the 70's and 80's look of these afghans. The black and white photos do help to picture other color schemes you might like to try after seeing the colors presented in the middle of the book.

Aghans, fast and easy
This is the book I recommend whenever I am asked which one to buy to do "simple" and "fast" afghans. I'd also recommend this book as an important part of anyone's knitting library for the following reason; sometimes you need to make a fast and impressive gift (for a new baby, a house warming, a sick friend.) What is better than a gorgeous afghan in colors you choose to suit your special friend? And afghans don't have to fit anyone. They are also valuable for using up stashes of yarn and for donating to shelters (check first to see your local shelter wants this kind of donation and if they want washable types of yarn.) ... Wonderful Surprise
I really didn't expect to find many patterns I would want to make in this book, but there are a ton of great ideas!One thing I love is that there is such a variety.There are some for babies, some are great for kids, some are feminine, and there are a lot that are very neutral or even perfect for a man.There is also a nice variety in skill levels which is great, because that way you never get bored.The yarns are easy to find or to substitute.Most are either worsted wt or chunky and there are several sport wt.The ghans are photographed nicely too, so that you can get an idea of how different color schemes look with different decor styles.

This is a great book!
What I didn't expect from this book was the quality of the afghans that I found.I truly thought this would be a fluff-type, I'm-so-popular-so-buy-my-book crochet book.I was greatly surprised and found it a delightful and interesting book filled with lots of crochet designs that will either stump you and make you want to throw the book across the room (guilty as charged) or it will make you go across the room, pick up the book and challenge yourself to make some really great afghans that your family will pat you on the back for and make them say great things about you!(I like that part!).This book is not a disappointment!

A great book for a more advanced crocheter.
I do not recommend this book if you are just beginning to crochet.While the instructions are fairly clear, the patterns are a bit more difficult and appear to be geared to the intermediatte crocheter. Also, if you arelike me and do not enjoy(or have time for)much assembly of your afghans, Iwould suggest trying another book as the majority of the patterns in thisbook require whip-stitching and such to complete the afghan.Read more
