4-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of ideas
This book has something for everyone. There is a wide range of themes and since the designs are generally small they have a number of uses alone (keyfobs, bookmarks, placemats, ornaments, etc) or they can be combined with other designs for larger works.2-0 out of 5 stars Too few finished pieces pictured
Not being one of those who can visualize a finished piece from a chart, this book was a disappointment to me.Only a handful of the charts are made up, but what projects are stitched, are very nice, indeed.I just would have preferred to see more finished pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars 500 interesting cross stitch blocks
This book will send your cross stitching mind awhirl with ideas. The book is based loosely on mosaic tiles. For experienced stitchers, it has some designs I've not seen in other books. For beginning stitchers, the designs aren't difficult to stitch, but not enough color pictures of finished work to show how to put blocks together into a design. You will need some graph paper to make the best use of this book. The layout of this book is beautifully done with each two page spread color themed. My current favorites are the fleur-de-lis pillow and English garden designs. Happy Stitching! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kimball is a favorite
I don't keep every quilt book I buy, but this one is a keeper. If you're a hand quilter or want to be, you will benefit from this book.Ms Kimball is one of my favorite applique and quilting people.I always learn something new from her. This book is no exception.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hand-quilting thrives!!
With hundreds of quilting books, I didn't need another one.But since Jeana Kimball's needles are my favorite, I took a chance.Wow!!How did she get so much information in 80 pages? She covers quilting through, around, and for applique, popular designs for the body of the quilt as well as the borders(both historical and modern), and tools. Every step is punctuated with a glossy color photo example of an actual hand-made masterpiece. And Jeana is classy, when she discusses needles, she doesn't even mention her own.

2-0 out of 5 stars How much is there to say about Hand Quilting?
Just a couple of pages in this book are actually about the process of quilting itself. There is a long part about the history of quilts (quite good if you are interested in that), a gallery of quilts (beautifullyquilted) and general instructions on materials and planning a quilt. Theauthor also tries to explain how to make a quilting design fit the size ofyour own quilt but that is done very poorly. I have seen much betterinstructions in other books. The quilting part is okay but it is just a fewpages. This is definitely not a book every quilter needs even if you preferhand quilting to machine quilting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
This is a wonderful book.I got it out of my local library and came into Amazon to find out how expensive it is because I intend to buy it.I have never seen this designer before and I'm very pleased with her style. The characters are happy but aren't too cartoonish. The projects that don't have "people" or "bears" in them are elegant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Indian Designs
This is one of my absolute favorite cross stitching books. I have always loved Indian arts, and this book did not dissappoint me.The charts are beautiful, and there is a wonderful variety of projects, large and small.I feel it was worth every penny I spent for it.You can make beautiful, small keepsakes and gifts or you can make intricate samplers, pictures, pillow covers, keychains, purses, and wall hangings. Some projects are relatively quick to make, and others take longer.I absolutely love the floral and paisley motifs. There are some other projects that require beading, but they are very beautiful. The only thing I found a little cumbersome is the threads are listed as Anchor only, and I only have access to DMC threads where I live. Also, the color conversion chart at the end of the book does not list all of the colors used. Some of the Anchor threads do not have a DMC equivalent, so I ordered a few colors online. If you aren't very picky like I am, you might be satisfied to just look at the pictures and choose a color that is close to the picture. The author did a wonderful job with this compilation of Indian art as cross stitch. She borrowed designs from Indian archetecture, metal work, pottery, rugs, and clothing. This is by far one of my favorite cross stitch books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Cross Stitch
I wanted to make everything in the book and/or adapt some of the designs into my own creations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book for Lovers of Native American Cross Stitching.
I live in Cape Town, South Africa and my husband and I travelled to london for a holiday in July,1999. I saw this book at Harrods while I was there and promptly bought two copies, one for my youngest sister, and one for a very good friend. It is amazing that an English designer of thestature of Julie Hasler, who has published many other fine cross stitchbooks, has been able to, so perfectly, portray the wonders of the NativeAmericans and their culture, both ancient and modern through this medium. The two people I have bought this book for have been stitching non stopfrom the more than 40 patterns featured in this high quality book. Thepicture of the Nes Pearce woman featured on the cover is but a smalltaste of the wonders to be found under it. I would recommend this book to anybody who loves the art of Cross Stitching and who loves the culture ofthe Native Americans. For cross stitchers who hate back-stitching, thisbook is ideal as Julie has managed to portray her subjects poignantly, using mainly whole cross stitches and using little or no back stitch. A fabulous buy. Stunningly easy patterns to follow, and the colours areamazing. I have found myselftotally inspired by the contents of this bookand have, as a result, started to read up as much as I can on the NativeAmerican culture. If you have the money and you like this type ofwork....buyit...you won't regret it! :)

Whether a beginning or advanced stitcher, this book has something for everyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
Looking for a book with beautiful oriental designs? This book is it, and then some! This book has realistic, well done oriental designs. The various sized projects means you can start out with something small and not feel overwhelmed. There are many wonderful designs and the charts are printed larger, making them easy to follow. I've been looking for good oriental designs for a while and I wasn't disappointed in this book at all!I can't wait to start my first project!

4-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive cross stitch book
This book contains about 50 designs for cross stitch on several different themes. Some are for intended for frames, others for pillows, table runners, banners, and other household projects. For the variety of good patterns I would give it five stars. But the organization of the book can be a little confusing at times, since it shows its samplers as month-to-month projects rather than by subject.I would also prefer the picture of the sampler to be on the same page as the pattern whenever possible, but this is not always the case.Overall, I do not regret my purchase and would recommend "Special Occasions in Cross Stitch" to anyone would like to have a little bit of everything in one book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous, well-varied collection
I just received this in the mail and can't wait to start stitching! The alphabets are so varied, including nursery rhymes, florals, nautical, native american and on and on, they are not just limited to childish themes like so many books have.I was blown away with the variety! The patterns are all full-color (who likes those little black-and-white patterns anyway?) and very large and easy to read. This book would be a fabulous addition to any stitcher's library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly as it claims
There are no dups in this incredible volume and lots of alphabets and pictures for boys and girls for either sweaters, shirts or those little holiday cards. In fact I liked the book so much that I transferred one set of the alphabet into a needlepoint rug, all 26 letters, slowly to be sure, and then took other designs of letters for pillows and such for my son's room for him to learn his alphabet.

5-0 out of 5 stars 30 charming samplers
Many of the samplers in this book are reproductions stitched on linen. Each has a brief history of who stitched it and when, a sharp color photo of the framed sampler (original or new), size, materials, directions, symbols and a black and white chart. The samplers feature assortedalphabets, verses and formal motifs. There is a page of locations of theoriginal samplers, with addresses and phone numbers to arrange visits. Each has a note of what collection it is in.Many of the samplers areperfect as beginning projects, and others require a higher level of skill. There are 2 pages of the variety of stitches used, including: cross, eyelet, rice, star, rococo, slant, buttonhole, chain and working with atambour hook. The motifs are quite inspirational to stitch from the chartsor create individual samplers from a combination of ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely gathering of history!
I bought "Historic Samplers" when it was first offered. So far, I have stitched three of the samplers. The photos are truly great, and the directions are clear enough for most beginning stitchers.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Flowing colors, soothing rhythm
When I first looked through this book of designs, I thought "no way--too complicated".The beauty and flowing lines appealed to me, so I looked closer. The charts were easy to understand and labelled very clearly.I tried one of the simpler projects and was hooked. Barbara Hammet introduction helps you understand the symbolism of the Celtic forms.I can hardly wait to start the next project.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant, extraordinary designs.Beautiful!
The designs in this book are mesmerizing. My jaw dropped when I got mine in the mail, I couldn't believe how gorgeous they were. The best part is that the patterns are large and easy to follow, and in full color. There are intricate patterns and simple patterns, some are lively and colorful and some are more muted. All of them are just amazing tributes to Celtic art. There are so many beautiful projects to choose from, and the motif library is a wonderful resource for your own projects you dream up.I highly recommend this book. You won't be disappointed!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough color and content
Much of Celtic art is very colorful, yet I found the examples in this book to often have only 3-5 real color variations. Most of the designs concentrated on crosses and swirls, and of the 75 designs listed, most of them are just small repeatable motifs.I was hoping for some actual Celtic Art reproductions pieces and a lot more big complete projects to do, rather than just ornamental designs.I was so disappointed with this book, knowing that I would never stitch anything from it, that I returned it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite and Unusual Designs
I have always wished I could make a cross stitch project that looked like a Tiffany or Art Nouveau. This book provides some of the most beautiful and artistic patterns I have found.I'm sure I will find a lifetime of inspiration from the patterns provided in this book as well as enjoying the interesting reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great addition to any stitcher's collection
I love to cross-stitch, yet I have trouble finding patterns that interest me. This book is such a wonderful find. It has a wide variety of patterns (the Klimt doesn't look anything like the Tiffanys on the cover) which are challenging enough for a stitcher who likes a more intricate pattern (like myself.)The patterns in this book are some of the best I've ever seen as far as artistry goes. The small motifs and decorative borders included at the back of the book encourage us to use our own creativity. I can't wait to make more of the projects in this book - right now I'm working on a pillow with one of the decorative borders.

4-0 out of 5 stars a nice cross stitch book
I ordered this book because I love stained glass designs and there were two pictured on the cover. I had been hoping for more of them inside but was disappointed to find that there weren't any others. Read more

I was pleasantly surprised and really impressed with this book.5-0 out of 5 stars who doesn't love colors

Useful for pillowcovers, kitchen decoration, pictures to hang on the wall and much more. A real inspiration. The charts are clear and vivid. Beautiful pictures. ... Read more
