5-0 out of 5 stars A true Field Guide
A short introduction that shows and explains dyeing technique with lots of superb photographs. The meat of this book is the detailed field guide to mushrooms with a full set of color photographs. Proper keys are here, good index, glossary and bibliography. Superb publication with all the details needed to do the job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great field guide to mushrooms for dyeing
This book does not give much information on how to dye with mushrooms, however, it is the absolute best field guide to mushrooms used for dyeing to date. Each mushroom is described in detail, with an accompanying color photograph and the colors that it yields. This book is a must have for mushroom dyers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos; short on technique
I really like this book, but it is not a textbook on how-to techniques. It gives a good overview of dye and pleating methods, but does not go into the detail I would like to see. It would be difficult to recreate any of the beautiful garments pictured, using just the information contained in the book. So, buy it for the photos and inspiration, not as a how-to book to create the garments pictured.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photographs with Useful Information
Essentially divided into two sections, Shibori: Creating Color and Texture on Silk, gives useful information on Shibori and contains beautiful photographs of the technique. The first half of the book describes: the properties of silk; the different classes of dyes available (with recommendations); the equipment needed; the actual dye process and; the importance of color interactions. The second half describes specific Shibori techniques such as sewn resists, clamp resists and pole wrapping. The 2 pages devoted to "setting" texture seemed, in comparison to the descriptions of the dyes and dye processes, abbreviated and could have done with an illustration or two.If you are the type of person who wants the essential facts presented quickly, clearly and concisely, then this may not be the book for you.If you enjoy having an overview of things before beginning work, then Shirbori: Creating Color & Texture on Silk may be just right.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing details
This book is beautifully presented.Unfortunately, the information inside is scant.I learned more surfing the web than I did from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This is a great book for beginers.Lots of great photos and explanations.Very happy with this purchase!

5-0 out of 5 stars great for beginners
The author teaches various silk painting techniques step-by-step. For each project she provides a picture of the finished piece, a drawing of the design that can be photocopied, a materials list and pictures for each painting step. The instructions are clear, the projects appealing. The book also has one of the clearest instructions how to make your own steam-fixing device and how to steam fix. It's a great book that will get you started. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A rose by any other name
A classic in the field of home hobby dyeing, Natural Dyes provides a historical overview of the field from its early days, information of the basic sort about mordants, fabrics, and dyes, and a series of reliable and effective recipes for dyeing wool with plant materials. As a textile arts demonstrator at a local museum, I always check my facts here, and refer to Androsko before trying something new. This book is valuable asreference and as handbook, and has the added advantage of warning the reader if a particular process is likely to be tricky or troublesome. Definitely worth having on hand!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference book for the dyer
This is an excellent book full of information and history of naturaldying. The book goes over the history of natural dying and how it cameabout and was used by the European Colonists in America. There is a shorthistory of dying during B.C.It then goes on to tell of how each colourwas introduced and made. This section includes sketches of the plantsIndigo, Madder, Annatto and Sumach. The second section of the book goesover colour.IT is too bad that there are no colour photos in thissection. But it details about the variations of colour one gets from homedying, and the preperation and equiptment one needs to start. The best partof this book, however, is the 52 recipes for dyes made from easilyobtainable natural material. The recipes help you to obtain the colour youwant by equating this much plant plus this much moderant on this muchfiber.IT is amazing to see how much the moderant has to do with the finalcolour. There are also charts for top dying. The book doesn't have muchin the way of technique or how to prepare different materials, but therecipes take care of this and are worth it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great generous book
I've started doing batik just a couple of months ago, and this is the third book I have bought from Amazon on this subject. I think this is the best of them three because it has very very clear instructions on every project the author suggests, great photos of each step, she shows very clearly a lot of techniques to use on different things (check out the lamp shade it's great)and I think most important of all she is very generous about her knowledge of batik, explaining everything that could happen if you do this or that, and with every day words, not all the technical-chemical mumbo jumbo i've found in other books. 5-0 out of 5 stars Plus Ultra, this is Beyond Marbeling
An amazing book. I was familiar with the standard marbled papers you see in old (and new) books, but this book shows dozens of styles that I not only had never seen, but would not have even thought possible. Stunning works that are not at all typical "marbling."Gabriele Grunebaum's oil marbleing is really astonishing. The techniques are clearly demonstrated with photographs and diagrams. Buy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely the ultimate!
I was really interested i learning to do paper marbeling - had looked all around for kits to no avail so I went looking for books and came across this one. There are a number of different techniques in here:Sumonagashi, oil color, watercolor, marbeling fabric and other materials and then the last chapter is "a gallery of contemporary marbeling."For each of the technique chapters it tells you the materials you need with pictures of them in case the words/descriptions aer not enough and then that's followed by a section on "basic techniques" that are specific to that technique. The writing is clear and straight forward and there are lots of good pictures to help.Following the basic instructions there are advanced instructions.Again, with good pictures and ideas. The end of the book has fabric as well as the gallery -I'm still a beginner so I haven't played around with fabric and the things in the gallery are pretty advanced but they sure are inspirational. For now I'll have fun with paper.Great book though - it has something for the beginner as well as the more advanced artist!

I borrowed this book from my local library to look up information on how to turn dye into printing ink...Having found that information quickly, the book was impossible to put down. Each section captured my interest in turn and the great illustrations made me want to try most of the other techniques, and as soon as possible. This book would suit anyone from a textile beginner to the most advanced student at university level...perhaps even the textile practitioner, wishing to try new techniqes. It is clearly written but best of all, in reading it, you feel it is more than possible to try --and achieve--an exciting result. Thanks, Kate. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for both batik and tie dye
This is by far the best book for beginners or even experienced people I've read on the subject.I'm new to the whole thing and this is the only book I've read out of about six, that shows how to fold, then shows the result of that fold for many different techniques and patterns. It shows batik being done in Indonesia by experts then provides practical instruction. It also covers something I'd never heard of tritik - using stitches instead of tieing.Very well done.I wish it could be updated to discuss new dyes and materials. ...
