4-0 out of 5 stars What to Know about the whole process.
This book tells you all of the details of fabric dyeing. It will allow you to decide whether or not you even want to attempt it.In my case I decided that I don't.Unless there is a fabric you really can't find, (hard to believe) or you simply like big messes, why bother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for beginner
This book is an excellent reference for beginners. It treats the subject like a cookbook, walking you step by step through each "recipe" so you can proceed with confidence. 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring yet practical
Fabric dyeing is one of those things that appeals to our primitive finger-painting urges. It's messy, colorful, and very satisfying. Vimala McClure's book for beginners, which grew originally from a popular magazine article, is just the ticket if you've been contemplating giving this a try. McClure approaches the somewhat daunting prospect of chemicals, rubber gloves, and stained sinks with enthusiasm, but also with practical sense. She knows that busy women need ways to fit these processes into their other responsibilities, and so breaks the processes up into small, manageable pieces that can be done over several days. Several different dyeing techniques are explored, including pickle-jar, fabric-fold, tie-dye, and stencil methods. The technical details are nicely balanced by photos of many styles of quilts that make us of hand-dyed fabrics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Technical Tome
Loads and loads of information -all in print. The only pictures were on the cover. Information is technical and makes use of the nasties - tin, chrome and copper. It should have been named "Science of the Dyer." If you want to identify anything then you will need more books as this one refers one only to other sources for identification. Good reference book for the technical aspect of dyeing. Dyeing is all about color and this book misses out on that aspect.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and realistic
I had been wanting to dye yarn for a long time and I finally ran into this book.It explains everything clearly and warns you multiple times of this not being a science, but rather to expect variations. The book is intended for dyers in the east coast of Canada / NE U.S., where the plants she mentions can be easily found. Nevertheless, anyone can benefit from the technique and general principles explained by the author.4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for the price
The only problem with this book is that it lacks colour photos that wouldenhance the reading of this book. However, this book is full ofinformation on how to dye wool and other fibers from plants and lichens. The book goes over all the techniques of dying different fibers. It alsohas a huge section on different plants and what colours you would expect toget when combined with a moderant. The book also contains a section onwhere to get and how to identify plants and moderants as well as otherbooks that are useful. There are many helpful tables on dyebaths, measurements for moderants and the effects of weak, medium and strongdyebaths. This is a wonderful book for the beginning dyer and an excellentresource, it is easy to read and understand eventhough I think it couldhave more pictures of the plants, moderants and different colours you mayget. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent how-to-do-it book
This book is exactly what I wanted: a strong, clear, detailed guide to the techniques involved in creating works in batik - pictures, scarves, cushion covers. It's full of illustrations which made it easy to follow but it alsoencouraged me to be more ambitious, trying out techniques which were quitenew to me. Good for a beginner, therefore, but also good for those whoalready know about batik but want to get to grips with new ideas! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource on dyes and fabric paints
The name turned me away at first, as I am not dyeing for the theater. That was a mistake. While I don't need the chapters on how to set up a dye shop for a theatre, other information provided in this book is hard to come byelsewhere. Covers fiber reactive dyes, acid dyes, 1:2 metal complex dyes, direct dyes, basic dyes for acrylics, disperse dyes, metallics, textilepaints, screen printing, 4 different discharge dyeing pastes, batik, blueprinting and brown printing on fabric (or whole garments) using light, marbling, airbrush. Much more thorough treatment of potential hazards thanany other dyeing book I've seen. Lists of carcinogenic dyes to avoid.Actual test results of fabric feel and fastness of many different textilepaints, each on six different fibers. Good index. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a simple approach
I refer to this book time and time again. It has good, basic information for novices, and moves on to a few more sophisticated techniques since it doesn't take long to master the basics, and fabric painting is so addictive, it is nice to have a few more sophisticated techniques ready to dive into.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific, "user friendly" book for hobbyiests and artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still unsurpassed!
This was the first book I ever on this exquisite art, and I bought it waaaaaaaaay back when I was a teenager.I now own many books, magazines, and CDs about this art, belong to both the guild and the mailing list, etc. -- but this remains my personal favorite. The eggs shown are gorgeous and widely varied, and the directions are very clear. You can't go wrong with this book; although a fraction of the cost of most books on the subject, it remains without peer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Splendid Art of Decorating Eggs is Splendid
I found this book to be an excellent source of inspiration and instuction in the art of egg decoratiing.I am a rank beginner and I found this book to be extremely helpful.Ms. Disney explains in detail all phases of decorating.Whether you are interested in doing detailed carving, or simple embleshment you will find this book helpful and informative.I only wish there were more color photos.

2-0 out of 5 stars Yes,I Agree,Dissappointing
I recieved this book for Christmas, and was truly sorry I had placed it on my wish list....I found this book very simplistic, poorly researched and most of all it presented terrible examples of finished projects. A real "Faux pas" No mention ot the long Japanese history for this technique, or examples of the many exquisite traditional pieces.........This is not even good enough for the library.......They should have saved the trees@

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Surely there are better, more detailed books on shibori.I paid more than the current Amazon price, and I wish I had spent my money on one of the other (more expensive) books.I suspect I will donate my copy to the public library for those who have no prior knowlege of resist dyeing, or those who would like to see what they are getting before they buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile though not exhaustive
Someone who wanted a strong and exhaustive overview of ofshibori told me that he was disappointed by this book, as it is fairlylimited in scope. However, I enjoyed the book very much for what it is. It includes a number of lovely examples of things that are possible with shibori. You will need another book to tell you about the dyes themselves, but most people interested in this book will already have at least one such dyers' book already. This book is well worth its relatively modest price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars astonishing work
This is one of the most amazing books I have ever come across. The amountof information on this all but forgotton craft is astonishing, and atribute to the dogged diligence of the author. As to the dye recipes, everycolor of the rainbow is brought forth - and the concoctions made solelyfrom nature for producing them - including information on dyeing hard todye cottons and linens. An amazing guide from this master of naturaldyeing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Ever Book on Natural Dyeing!
I have read all the current and out-of-print books on natural dyeing that are available, and I have tried a large number of the "recipes". This is the only book I would recommend. The information is factual, asopposed to annecdotal--a fault most of the others suffer from--and youactually get the colours given, if you follow the steps accurately. It isdefinitely the best book if you are interested in the classic natural dyes, such as indigo and madder, and it is the only one I have found that givesyou a good procedure for Turkey Red! If you use this book, you won't needany others (although they are fun to read!).

3-0 out of 5 stars The DISSERTATION on Natural Dyeing.... whew!
Although packed with a vast amount of information on natural dye history and formulas, this book reads like a dissertation. It's lengthy and exacting on all accounts. If preparing and using natural dyes sounds likesomething "fun" to do, this book may just leach all theexcitement right out of you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a beginner
This is a beautiful book.I bought it so that my children and I could get started in this art form. This book provides beautiful inspiration for the beginner, and has thorough instructions. There wasn't much info on dividing up the egg, but that information is easily found online, and not everyone wants a perfectly symetrical egg....especially children :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and inspiring
I was looking into possibly wanting to take up this craft. But before doing so, I wanted to make sure I conpletely understood the art. This book clearly spelled out step by step and even why it is done so. But the author also gives other options.

This book is absolutely beautiful! The photographs are lovely, and the instructions are very clear.Even if you don't plan on attempting the craft, the pictures are well worth the price of the book!
