1-0 out of 5 stars Historical, not instructional

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for all fabric work w/ very good illustrations
This book is a very good guide to all sorts of transfer methods on fabric for any kind of fabric work.It is very user friendly because the wording is clear and concise with very good full color examples that go along with the text.Troubleshooting hints are included with each method as well a lot of other useful hints. The examples and pictures of the actual work are very helpful in that they show many different applications of each technique and really help to get you thinking of ways to be able to further play with and modify the methods shown. Also, it is very clearly laid out into categories per chapter that make it very easy to use as a quick reference.A reference chart is included in the book telling the basic overview of each technique with information concerning the permanence of the method, fabric types recommended for each method, as well as many other useful info that really make this book very easy to use and covers the basics of most any kind of transfer method you could need.I originally had to buy this book for a fibers class I was taking but it has been more helpful after the class ended because it really was a very easy to use by being very easy to quickly reference with it's clear layout and detailed description of all of the advantages and disadvantages of each of the methods clearly labeled. It is a very good book and would recommend it to anyone interested in any kind of quilt or fabric work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hopelessly obsolete!Don't waste your money.
This may have been okay in its day, but calls for materials no longer being made (e.g., Royal Egg Sheen), and ignores those available today. There are many excellent books for stark beginners, as well as wonderful mailing lists (see YahooGroups.com).Don't waste your money on this garbage.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent beginner book
This book is all you need to get started with egg decorating - at least it was for me.Its short (less than 50 pgs)but jamm-packed with what you need to know to get going. The chapters are as follows:5-0 out of 5 stars If you're a beginning egg artist, this book is for you.
Susan Byrd takes you step by step through eight egg-decorating projects. By the time you've finished the last one, you're no longer a beginner. Her techniques and trouble-shooting ideas really work. A lot of today's eggartists began with Susan Byrd. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars nice goal
The book appears self-published, poorly executed, and outdated--although well-meaning. The monospaced text was irritating to read; the photo illustration were poorly reproduced. The cover was handsome, but the interior looked as though it were a photocopy of someone's senior thesis. The text was well-written, but the facts were outdated ten years later. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dyes and Paints
This is a must have for anyone involved in dyeing-surface design. One of the 2 -if I were on a desert island- kind of book.
4-0 out of 5 stars A library of Information in one book
I didn't give this book 5 stars because it has one fault. It's price!! But save up and buy it because it has the most comprehensive information in one package. It gives even the beginner a flying start in the art of dyeing. lin Noble tells you about how to use resists and fiber-reactive dyes; how to marble and how to use direct application dyeing, immersion dyeing, and paints to use on textiles. She includes the recipies for each project and a lot of background information that build you knowledge not just "parroting" styles.Once you have read this book, you have the foundations to move beyond the basics and develope your own ideas. There are resources in the back for the people in the US but not much use for those of us from overseas.3-0 out of 5 stars Pricey but worth it
I was at first weary to buy this book because of thehigh price. After debating the topic numerous times I just went for it.Now I am ever so greatful that I have bought this book, it is very thorough and displaysmany important bits of information. So for all those looking at the bookbut hesitant of the price just go for it! 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and informative - this is all you need!
Having done a batik in a craft class in school years ago, I was really interested in doing more, but couldn't find a class in the city (NYC!).I bought this book and everything in it is beautiful artwork, inspiring and really lovely.Aside from being a book depicting the beautiful and intricate work that can be done with batik, this turns out to be a detailed guidebook on how to take on batik and do it in your own home. With step by step pictures about the dying process, detailed information on waxing techniques and options, this book is all you need to get to start doing batik in your own home.I HIGHLY recommended it if you're looking to try batik yourself!

5-0 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL book
This is not your standard hippy type batik. The work in here is incredible. I have never seen anything like it, and I've seen most of the books on batik that are out there. The artists featured are fantastic. The book has extensive information on working with wax and other resists, removing the resists, using different types of dyes. I highly recommend it.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars condensed version of a better book
This Singer series book is quite nice. However, it turns out to be a shorter version of another book, Exploring Textile Arts, published two years later by the same publisher.Nowhere does either book indicate this relationship, but the text and illustrations for the various techniques described are identical.Buy one or the other, but not both!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book
The variety of fabric and paint techniques inside this book were numerous. As an artist who works with both fabrics and paint; as well as various other media I was very impressed and pleased. The book features step by step instructions; great illustrations and photography. All in all a beautiful and very useful tool for an artist; home decorator; fashion decorator; designer; fiber art major; textile artist; and anyone fascinated by creating cool works of art or fashion! Editorial Review

There's no end of great quilt fabric available, but for a truly unique look many quilters enjoy creating their own, so that not only the quilt pattern but also the textiles themselves convey personal style. Immersion, direct, and tie-dyeing methods are all explained here, as well as various techniques of fabric painting. Twelve quilt projects (including templates and diagrams for each) demonstrate how to transform hand-dyed materials into attractive finished quilts. There are also instructions and suggestions for about a dozen other applications, from vests to place mats to scrunchies. The quilt directions are brief, but they provide a good jumping-off point for those seeking to incorporate hand dyeing into their quilting. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern Application of Ancient Art
In my research about Biblical dyes, I found this book helpful. Most of the book is historical: the circumstances when each dye was first used, the recipes used (he has a detailed description of the complicated Turkey red dye), and anecdotes. He quotes older works, and then comments on them. The style is like listening to a lively lecture from the dye master. After he then discusses different pattern methods, he gives practical recipes and advice on how to use these ancient dyes. Appended at the end is a discussion of the chemistry of these dyes. I find his approach to the sources erudite and open-minded. The book itself is beautiful with its colored pictures and lovely design. The only drawback: although he masterfully weaves together from many sources (listed in his bibliography) his own intergrated conclusion, I would have liked if he would have documented where particular details of his impressions were from. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hand-dyed fabric
I purchased this book when it first came out and boy, I was in for a real treat. This book is written with the inexperienced dyer in mind.I teach from this book beginning dying at my local quilt shop.I'm sorry it's no longer inprint. I would recomend this book to anyone that wants to learn to hand-dye!Also, using the freezer bags makes it a snap!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very much the best for beginners...
This book is great for beginners, but as a 'non-beginner' I still refer back to it all the time. It is great, as the recipes don't call for urea, which I never seem to have around. It is easier, and safer, for children to use for dyeing as it doesn't use the harsh chemicals some formulas call for.
5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!!!
I had originally purchased this book in a kit I bought from Dharma Trading. I somehow misplaced the book, and just recently purchased another copy. I have several books on dyeing/painting on fabric and go to this one time and time again. I'm teaching a class in July on dyeing fabric and everyone is going to have to purchase a copy of this book. It is a great book to learn how to dye fabric. It is well written and easy to follow. Need to purchase if you are interested in learning the art of dyeing fabric. ... Read more

Very clear pictures and text for the beginner to getstarted on basic Tye-Dye techniques.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just the Basics
This is an excellent book for the absolute beginner who doesn't plan to gobeyond the basics. The beginning shows an number of simple techniques. All the projects involved use these techniques. Most of them look very70's Rit-dye-and-rubber-bands.I found the projects to be fairlyrepetitive. Some of them involve sewing. The instructions are clear, though, and the introductory techniques section is helpful.
