Love the book.. but need to advise that it is for an advanced quilter.. not for a beginner...personally, I loved it...

Beautiful book
I've gone over the information in this book a few times, and really want to start a project. However, I'm one who needs quiet time to absorb the information, and I just haven't had the time to get "really involved" in a project. The pictures are beautiful, and I'm looking forward to the time I can make an art quilt as beautiful as Barbara's.

Sublime design
I really liked the graphic design of this book, it won me over to purchase. Although on receipt of the book I was a little disapointed with the level of detail within.
This book is wonderful!
This book is easy to follow and the patterns are fun. I had fun stitiching anything I could get my hands on.
Lots of Great Patterns for Embellishing
I disagree with the last two reviewers. I love the patterns Jenny Hart has on her web site and although these patterns are different, they are just as useful, if not more. There are tons of things you won't find easily elsewhere, like Rhumba dancers, owls, space aliens and ships, cute ( and hip ) cats and dogs, race cars, and practically every fruit known to man. But there are lots of very practical things you can use for your dish towels, t shirts, pillow cases, and even your kitchen curtains! I am having a ball using the new patterns and the great thing about embroidery is you are only limited by your imagination! Embellish the heck out of these things, make sprinkles on the cupcakes! Add light and shadows to the fruit! There are a lot of alphabets in the very back of the book, great for those of us with less than perfect handwriting. All in all, I love it and I definitely give it five stars for anyone remotely interested in embroidery. Way to go, Jenny! ... Read more

Exactly what I was looking for!
I had finished piecing my first crazy quilt and only knew about two embroidery stitches with which to embellish it...of all the books that said they were "the one" I chose this one, and it was PERFECT.Each stitch, no matter how complex, is broken down into simple stitches and explained, so not only did I add feather stitches, I made vines and flowers and butterflies!This book is perfect for the beginner who wants her project to look like she's not a beginner!

Great book for Free Form Embroidery
This is a great book for the beginner as well as the experienced free form embroidery hobbiest.The instructions are clear and the photos are inspiring. If you try just one of the simple designs, you will want to make another and another.

I am pleased !
Libby has shown me through her book of Threadplay, that quilting can be so much more than what quilting used to be. I love her choice of colors and patterns.I truely admire her work and would highly recomend this book.

One idea dragged into book form
There seems to be a disturbing trend in the sewing machine embroideryworld of taking a single idea and trying to turn it into a book. Thetechnique described, while attractive, could easily be covered in amagazine article or at most a chapter in a book. ... Read more

Great retro intro to embroidery
This is a great kit to introduce someone to embroidery.It's young and hip, but still gives you the information and tools you need to get started.The instruction book is pretty small, but has a few basic stitches to get you started, with good descriptions and how-to pictures.You'll be addicted to embroidery in no time!

Crafting for the non-crafty!
As all the other reviewers have stated, this is a great kit. The patterns are beautiful and work like a charm, and you'll have everything you need to get started as soon as the kit is in your hands. The kit's book is written in Jenny's witty style, and chock full of beautiful photographs of Jenny's own embroidered handiwork, so it's as entertaining as it is illuminating. Don't hesitate to buy one, or several to give as gifts...everyone should have this kit!

I heart Jenny Hart!
I received the Stitch-It Kit for my birthday in June and ever since I've been stitching up a storm. Initially I saw Jenny Hart's ads in BUST magazine (which you simply MUST check out if you've not already)and thought, "Well.. that's pretty cool. I'd like to try that." Now me, I'm not super-duper crafty to the point where I have my own craft table so I was curious as to whether or not this was going to be a huge ordeal when I actually received the kit; I didn't want the kit to sit off to the side with my Rubix cube, you know? Literally, within 10-15 minutes of opening the box and reading the directions I was well on my way to creating a cherry pattern. (I felt it was appropriate as it was my first time embroidering.) One does not need a background in sewing to do this. That's how simple it is. The site also offers message boards to share your projects, tips, and ideas.

Modern ideas
I loved this book because it included ideas on how to use silk embroidery in a modern way rather the victorian way. The works "Zane Gray Trail" and "The Desert Garden" are not in that fussy Victorian tradition.

An ok book, and a classic, but not what I was hoping for
I have to say this: I just don't like her style. She likes to do very cluttered things using multiple types of embroidery, and I think many of her examples and projects are quite hideous.Read more

Hip and easy -going;no quilt police here!
The authurs have a refreshing way of using fabric, and an easy-going attitude toward those of us who have little experience
Fabulous guide to contemporary quiltmaking!
I was so looking forward to getting my hands on this book and was not disappointed when it arrived! Clear, easy to follow instructions, AWESOME patterns (three I want to make immediately, lol!), and wonderful writing make this a superb addition to any quilt library. There is something for every skill level from beginner to advanced and many colour variations included to get you thinking and planning. A definite new favourite.

Definitely the "Bible" for Embroidering
This book is phenominal! It truly is a "must have" for anyone that embroiders, especially a novice. Machines come with instructions that can be overwhelming when first read. This book gets down to the basics and then some. Very easy to read and understand. Understanding hooping, threads, designing, etc. All are important to embroidering. This book has it all plus free designs. I would highly recommend this book to anyone just beginning to embroider. You won't be disappointed.

Complete Book
This is by far the best book on machine embroidery I have ever purchased.The instructions are very easy to understand, it's like a "Oh now I get it" type of book.You won't be disappointed in this great book. I would give it 8 stars if I could.

INSPIRATIONAL BOOK!!!
I just saw my Aunt Mary's book and had to have a copy! It is loaded with inspiration and makes me so excited to try some of the stitches. I love the simple drawings to show the stitches and the examples are wonderful! I am a mixed media and fabric artist so I loved the ideas and inspiration this little book gave me!

Excelente
El libro presenta diferentes puntos y como se realizan. Al comenzar a tomar clases de bordado, la maestra recomendó el uso del libro, pues posee explicación de cada uno de los puntos, sus diferentes nombres y como reailzar cada uno paso por paso. This is the first and best of the embroidery stitch dictionaries. This is a welcome start to any novice's collection and a wonderful addition to any expert's. There are other dictionaries out there, and many of them are fantastic for their specialties, this is the best single unit.

This book is a great reference book! I am new to embroidery and I didn't like all those books on patterns and what not. You can make your own flowers, birds, or whatever just from pictures you find. This is a wonderful book for beginner machine embroidery students. The ideas given are varied and very easy to follow.I highly recommend this book. This is part of the Jeanine Twigg's Companion Project Series. All books in this series have been most helpful and easy to follow.

I loved this book and my Grand daughter loved it too as soon as we got it home and read a bit, we were trying out some of the great designs. It really is a fun book even if you have been embroidering for a while.There is always something new to learn.

easy to follow!
I had to buy this book for a fibers class and i'm glad i did. this book is great! easy to follow instructions. if you can get the older one, the cover is much cuter! it helped me learn lots of embroidery stitches, basics of quilting, and the macrame section is great!

This volume lives up to the title. It is most definitely a very complete guide to needlework. The instructions are flawless, and the lovely presentation will encourage you to try new things and refresh old skills. Not what I expected
Personally I found this book rather dissapointing. The instructions are very perfunctory and often incomplete. Better instructions on most of the included tecjniques are available free on the web with a bit of searching. It is an interesting book to read but don't expect too much practical help.

Best beading guide ever
This is the most complete guide to beading techniques I've ever seen.It covers everything you could possibly want to do with beads, especially seed beads.It covers everything from beadweaving (peyote, brick, herringbone, netting, etc. stitches) to knitting, crocheting, and tatting with beads, to wire work, to bead embroidery.The instructions are wonderfully clear and well-illustrated.There are 2-3 projects to make with each technique, including a small sampler project to get your feet wet.The book is also an invaluable resource for tips and tricks and information on beads and beading.
Titled appropriately
The book is wonderful.The illustrations on how to do the various stitches are enlarged enough to easily see what's going on.You don't need to puzzle out stuff.Besides the size of the illustrations, they are clear cut with each step having its own picture along with clear written out instructions.

Very Interesting Book!
I am very excited about trying projects found in this book. Margaret Beal gives clear instructions, but yet allows you to express your own creativity. I will be trying these techniques soon!

Opens your eyes to possiblities
Its amazing what I have seen done with Soldering Irons of late!I am impressed with these women - but especially Margaret Beal.She realized that it could be an "iron" of sorts.Its a lesson in what can be done to synthetics if we only remember how many we have burned with a normal iron.Ms. Beal has learned how to control that burn and with an even hotter utensil - the soldering iron. .I especially loved the "pillows".

The photos of the quilts are stunning. The color resolution is good and the photos show detail.

A great book on the current state of the art
Well photographed and documented, this book is a great snapshot of what's current and exciting in the field of art quilts.

Disappointed
I don't know whats going on in the art quilt world these days, but it seems to me that the more you can change the structure of the fabric, the more chance you have to get into a venue like this. These quilts pretty much all look alike to me, and it appears to me that the artists have qualified for this venue by slopping,dropping, and plopping as much gunk on the fabric as it can hold. There is more to art quilting than surface design!I do have to say that there are some truely breathtaking works in this book, but over all I was extremely disappointed.
