1-0 out of 5 stars Is this the same book others reviewed???!!!
I found this to be a total waste of money. There actually is very little information presented about working with these threads, and what is presented is out-of-date and obviously biased towards Kreinik threads, which I guess is to be expected. What isn't mentioned is that 90% of the projects presented are hand cross-stitched and rather tacky, if you ask me. The rest are needlepoint and equally tacky. There is no information on using these threads by machine.I was very anxious to receive this book after reading the book synopsis and the other reviews, now I'm very anxious to list it on Ebay and hopefully recoup the money I wasted purchasing this!

4-0 out of 5 stars The book that got me addicted
This book's fascinating. I had never realized how approachable this art form is but this author paved the way for me in gold!

5-0 out of 5 stars Meet the Metallic Thread Primer: Metallic Thread Embroidery
This book is a must-have tool for needleworkers who use metallic threads, are thinking about using metallic threads, or who hope to use these fibers in their work.It provides a concise history of metallic threads and explains the variety which exist.Colorful photographs, tables, and illustrations are plentiful and helpful."Metallic Threads," provides not only a history of this medium, but practical advice for present day use, and it goes one step further and offers a wide range of projects using metallic fibers to put your newly acquired knowlege to use.In short, it is a vital reference text for those involved in the needlework industry as a professional or hobbyist, but it is equally an inspirational text which provides fun and practical ways to get acquainted, "up close and personal," with this medium.A job well done by Ms. Kreinik et al!I recommend it highly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
If you think this is what you're looking for, trust me, it is. Just superb - lots of great, clean, perfect designs - clear instructions.

5-0 out of 5 stars So much to choose from!
I bought this book several days ago and was not disappointed. There is so much to choose from. I haven't been able to decide what to do first. The illustrations are basic line drawings. They are ready to go for tracing right out of the book or scanning into your computer to reduce wear and tear on the book. The front of the book displays a whole bunch of embroidery stitches and the directions on how to do them. The majority of the book illustrates hundreds of flowers in many different patterns and the rest consists of creatures, quilt squares and many beautiful intricate medallion patterns. The only thing that will hold you back is your own imagination. I recommend this book highly. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Instructions Ever
I am in the middle of making the first ball, what is supposed to be the easy ball.I don't understand what she is talking about.she is referring to the points on the ball with jargon that she has never defined, as far as I have found searching through the introduction.I am currently trying to do something called a herringbone stitch, but the only reference to how to do it are very simple line drawings of the preliminary stitches. At this point I have decided to just make up my own method that will look as much like the completed ball as possible. If I was going to have to just make up my own method, though, why did I get this book?!
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Instructions
As others have pointed out, the instructions in this otherwise beautiful book are sorely lacking.I've done several Temari balls from Diana Vandervoort's first book, and had no problems. However, even doing the first one in Diamond's book left me very frustrated. She does not tell you how many rounds to make of each color, so you're left to try to count the threads from the photos. Not a good way to do it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good source of ideas
I have two Temari ball books; one by Diane V (for beginners) and this one. Some of the instructions are hard to follow; sometimes I looked at the pictures and guessed about what to do.There isn't a lot of detail about how to start or end a thread, how many wraps to make, when to change colors, etc.And a couple patterns seem to be missing steps. But if you've learned to make Temari balls already, this book has beautiful, inspiring designs. One comment on her technique is that she has you start with a polystyrene ball and cover it with thread (without a batting layer or a yarn layer). This is a very slow way to start! And I think the batting layer and thread layer help anchor the knots in the balls making the finished product more secure. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Must have
Another reviewer had a very detailed description of this book which allwho are interested in this title should read.I generally like moresohisticated designs and I absolutely loved all the Father Christmases thatmake up a nice portion of the book. This book really caters to all tastes.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you could only have one book for the long winter nights
I have long been a fan of the Vanessa-Anne house style, but this book is a perfect culmination of all their previous work. The collection covers a wide range from simple Amish samplers to complex needle-art pictures. There are five headings covering birth, special events such as weddingskeep-sakes for friends and family, decorations for the home, lovely alphabet samplers, and my particular, favourite, the Chirstmas collection. This is a group of seven different Father Chismas pictures, which cover all ethnic origins but could be worked as a harmonious whole if you were skilled enough. Even if like me, you felt a lot of the work was beyond your skills the sheer beauty of this book would lure you on to greater artistic endevour. The art work is of a very high standard being both clear and easy to read.So often needle-work books are let down by poor rendition and mean use of colour. This is most assuredly not the case with this book. Another nice touch is the way the finished projects are diplayed in various settings to further whet the appitite. I first came across this book in a review featured in a American needle-work magazine and was so taken by the look of it that I ordered it through a book-seller who was who was going to the states. ( I live in England) Even though I was agast at the price, this being pre-online ordering, I have used and browsed this book almost more than any other in my vast collection. In fact my significant other says if he has to share his space with much more of my collection he is moving out to the garden shed. But if I didn't already have this I would feel it a risk well worth the taking. Truly a book to help pass the balmy summer evenings, and get you through the long winter nights ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent recource for the beginner..
..since every step is shown on beutiful, clear photographs. Under every photo you get the explanation in words too so you know what to do 100%! The instuctions are very clear and easy to understand! The book is full with techniques yet, it's not overvhelming, hundreds of stiches and not just regular embroidery but a little bit of ribbon embroidery too. Therefore I'd recommend this book not only for the beginner but the experienced too since there are so much to learn from! What I really liked was that the author showed at least 8 ways to make mini roses from ribbon! I have never embroidered before but I always wanted to try. I have no one to teach me right now so I've been looking for some books at my local book store as well as fabric stores for a while. My problem with the majority of the beginners books is that the illustrations shown are only drawings and most of the time they are not clear enough for me. What you usually get is one drawing and on that one, you get 2 to 5 steps and they put a number to every step. I didn't like that so I was very happy when I finally came across this book today at the store! I didn't buy it yet since Amazon is cheaper but I can't wait to order soon and start embroider!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Embroidery Book I Own
I'm a senior and I never embroidered.I started looking at books for instructions and a friend of mine owns a copy of this book.I borrowed it and after just a few minutes, I knew I had to own a copy.I love the step by step instructions with pictures. The book gives you alternative names to stitches, hints and definitions of what the stitches can be used for.The details are amazing, and each page is an education.I'd recommend it to all beginners as well as the experienced embroiderer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Stitch Book Yet
I saw this book at Barnes and Noble before I purchased from Amazon, so I knew what I was getting.Saved alot of money through Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Noted quill worker "gives up the shop" & tells the real deal
Ms. Heinbusch does all re-creators of indigenous American culture a great service with the publication of her book. The basic techniques of porcupine quill work embroidery have long been available in various published forms.Much of the old techniques have been lost forever and we the modern crafters need to do our best to re-learn , recreate or create new techniques.Ms. Heinbusch, very early in her book, reveals a treasure trove of her personal experimentation in the dying of the quills. She has been able through trial and error to get a beautiful simulation of the "old time" colors using modern fabric dyes. She spells out the eaxct formulas in almost foolproof recipes. The book included photos of the completed techinques as well as illustrations in the working of the particular technique.A useful chapter in making buckskin had been included and here too, Ms.Heinbusch is free with tricks and tips.I have a few quilling tricks up my sleeve that are not revealed here, but the quillworkers that taught them to me have sworn me to secrecy.I have never met Ms. Heinbusch, yet she has given freely of what she knows to those that learn it, Thank You ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice designs, light on the detail
The designs in this book are great. However, the threads used are mostly Appleton and Paternayan and the book contains a conversion chart between DMC and Anchor.... Also, no information is given for differing lengths of thread for each brand. This makes conversion into a different thread brand extremely difficult.
5-0 out of 5 stars A compelling volume packed with visual examples and written insights into the Ehrman style
Designs by Kaffe Fassett, Candace Bahouth and Elian McCready are just some of the features in The Ehrman Needlepoint Book, fathering designs from top designers across the country. Ehrman needlepoint kits are of high quality, and The Ehrman Needlepoint Book reflects this quality and the possibilities of customizing chosen themes within the Ehrman kit standards. Patterns - some full-page, all in color - yarns, and discussions of each needlepoint challenge are revealed in a gorgeous presentation delving into the finer points of new and old design combinations. Any needlepoint fan will find The Ehrman Needlepoint Book a compelling volume packed with visual examples and written insights into the Ehrman style.

4-0 out of 5 stars Casting a New Shadow on Redwork
What could be more American than Redwork? How about Redwork with inspiration? Alex Anderson has spun a new twist to an all-time favorite needle art, by producing a clever and creative book on this uniquely American craft entitled, "Shadow Redwork".By including a subtle message of inspiration or love in the background using ecru embroidery, Alex has devised an interesting look, which causes the viewer to ponder more deeply our handiwork. For those of us who labor to produce personalized heirlooms for special folks, a few extra oohs and ahs goes a long way! Ms. Anderson's directions are simple to follow, with some handy tips interspersed along the way. Most appreciated are her Stitch Directions including diagrams for both right and left-handed needle crafters. She includes some simple enough designs for those new to Redwork, including her "Nasturtiums Pillow" as well as the "Seasons Banner", along with some more challenging projects for the seasoned Redwork enthusiast. A tip from one of those seasoned Redwork enthusiasts - when tracing the Redwork part of the pattern, try using a red, .05 Micron permanent pen.If your stitches are slightly off the tracing line, you will never notice! Keep up the great work, Alex; we look forward to your next imaginative quilting venture! ... Read more
