New Hobby for Me

Spectacular
This book is sumptuous.The artist's work is so spectacular that it is intimidating.However, she makes clear that she has had her share of false starts, which is comforting.I also appreciated her comments on her art, which turn out to be, in addition, comments on life.This is not a "how-to-do-reproduce-my-quilt" book, but there is a good deal of useful technical information.I have over 130 books on quilting and related topics and I think this is number one on my favorite parade. ... I purchased this book for my wife who is learning this technique and her words were, 'the best book I have ever seen on this subject'.She says that this book gives more advice and is more easily followed than any other books she has seen.It is meant for the beginner who is new to the technique and is therefore invaluable.

Excellent ideas for craziness on your quilt
I purchased this book to get some ideas for embellishing my crazy quilts and have not been dissapointed. This book explains the stitches well and also shows how you can place beads with the hand embroidery to enhance your design. There are quite a few ideas and the pictures are very enticing. Not a how-to book
The lady from California is right: beautiful and stunning. A superb coffee table book BUT not a how-to let me show you how one. If you want to make these projects you'll have to buy them from her OR get the Ann Cox Beginner's Guide and learn how.Ms. Eriksson's directions are rather sketchy and terse.An unfortunate after-effect of thiis terseness is that the book feels more like a catalogue, hence the coffee book category, than a craft manual. I spied this at a craft show about 6 months ago and just had to take it home with me, even though I have never done any ribbon embroidery. This book is gorgeous. Large, high gloss, full color page after, full color page clearly showing the most amazing life-like ribbon embroidery floral arrangements. The instructions are clear and detailed patterns are presented for the projects. The artist works mainly with variegated silk ribbons and she explains how to choose and take advantage of their qualities to achieve her results, along with detailed how-to-stitch diagrams. The works is of the highest caliber similar to the types of projects seen in Australian embroidery magazines. Even if you never make a project, you can learn a great deal from her stunning compositions and color usage. Buy it as a pattern book or to enjoy as a luscious coffee table book.

Originated in the 17th century, stumpwork is a type of raised and padded embroidery that features a charming array of flowers, fruits, insects, animals, and sometimes people, all worked as delicate sculptural forms. The intricacy and detail evident in a fine piece of stumpwork is truly amazing. The sculptural quality makes this technique unique; more than just being raised off the surface in slight relief, many elements are almost fully dimensional. Fruits look ripe enough to pluck; petals and leaves seem almost to rustle in the breeze; bugs look like they've just lit on the branch. Be advised, however, that this is not a method for the timid crafter; although the book provides ample general instructions and careful analysis of individual elements before proceeding with specific projects, a good working knowledge of embroidery stitches is strongly advised. But the results are so absolutely delightful, you may want to practice honing your skills just to give this a try. Read more

This is an excellent book on punchneedle embroidery. This type of embroidery is becoming quickly popular and this book will tell you everything that you need to get started and have fast success. The book is great for both beginners and the experienced puncher with a number of patterns, a lot of technique, and excellent color illustrations. The author, Linda Repasky, is very knowledgable on the subject and presents clear and easy to follow instructions in this book. The book covers every area of the art and includes directions on how to frame finished work and how to make pins from your creations.

I like it!
Wonderful combination of applique and embroidery. Emboriderystiches are simple, and the applique patterns range from simple to a little more complex ( but managable ). No boredom here!

Applique Masterpiece: Affairs of the Heart
Ms Rossmann's exploration of many possibilities using a heart motif results in an array of very interesting designs, and her use of color is fascinating. However, these are unlikely patterns for a novice, since the instructions for transferring the designs and the methods she gives are archaic. A person skilled in applique can do much with the patterns. A good basic book on hand applique is recommended for others.
