5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book covers almost everything a machine embroiderer needs to know about embroidering on fleece. Many innovative techniques are covered by fleece expert Nancy Cornwell. The designs included on the CD are really good and can be used in many ways. In addition, Cornwell tells you how to use the designs you already have, both as they come and by taking them apart. She also covers what kinds of designs work best for fleece. The book becomes a springboard for your own creativity.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, but worth every penny!
Have had this set in my library for over a year, but cannot say I have read every page ... but have used is for information gathering AND JUST PURE PLEASURE.A big "Well Done" for Ms. Ring!

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete guide to an important period of needlework history
Betty Ring is a renowned needlework historian who really knocked herself out for this complete look at American needlework from the 1650s through the 1850s.While this two-book set may seem expensive, rest assured it's filled with color and black and white photographs of samplers, paintings, and newspaper clippings about needlework during this 200-year period. The writing is thick -- not a "day at the beach" reader, but is chock-full of information for the different time periods and areas of the U.S. covered here (the East Coast, mostly New England). There are no patterns here to follow, nor are there many descriptions of the stitches themselves. This book gives unique insight into the origin of outstanding pieces of art/needlework, and discusses at length the history of the schools that taught such work. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars As scientifically accurate as it is creatively packaged
Part of the "Milner Craft Series", dedicated needlecrafts just won't find an embroidery book like Jane Nicholas' Stumpwork, Goldwork & Surface Embroidery Beetle Collection on any sewer's shelf: it is a unique guide sharing Jane Nicholas' method of using threads, fabrics and - yes - beetle wings to create lovely designs and projects in different embroidery forms. As scientifically accurate as it is creatively packaged, Embroidery Beetle Collection provides a large color photo of the beetle, scientific identifiers including order, suborder and family, and specific step-by-step instructions for reproducing it. An extraordinary, unique guide.
5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
If you love the art of hand embroidery, you MUST own this breathtaking volume. The book itself is a work of art and worthy of a honored position on the coffee table. As a craft book it is flawless. The charming hand drawn instructions are easy to follow and include detailed materials lists.I own and love all of Ms. Nicholas's books, but this one is definitely the crowning glory, I can't wait to see what's next.I know I'm gushing, but really, buy it, you'll see!

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasured possession
This book caught my eye in a shop window, with its beautiful array of beetles on the cover. The designs in the book are stunning, the instructions excellent, and the history and background section intriguing. There is a section with detailed instructions for all the stumpwork beetles on the cover (with stunning photos of the real life creatures), a short section of amazing projects incorporating the stumpwork crawlies, a section on flatwork beetles and a section with miscellaneous other beetle-related projects. The photography is excellent and even the pages are of the most gorgeous silky-strong paper... (I'm rambling!)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! Save a fortune
Elizabeth Bradley designs are still very popular. This books includes a few designs that cost $200.00 in kits each, plus a few that are not available as kits. Very good!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite needlepoint book
I love this book!I have about 19 needlepoint books, but this is the one I go back to again and again. For those of you who have only worked with kits and lusted after the VERY EXPENSIVE Elizabeth Bradley kits, this isthe way to go.If you are a cross-stitcher, the added plus is that Bradleyadvocates a cross-stitch because it makes the cushions more durable, itdoesn't distort the canvas, and it's what many Victorian needleworkersdid.5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely
Beautiful charted flowers, a very worthy successor to "DecorativeVictorian Needlework". Book is organized by the seasons.A samplerfor each season and several floral designs for each season. Informative, detailed, a conversion chart for the different brand needlepoint wools, andinstructions on the preferred needlepoint stitch for working E. Bradley'sdesigns. Plus, the delightful surprises in E. Bradley's books, in thisone you must see the Plum Pudding chart. What a delightful Christmas gifta plum pudding ornament would be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Bye for Stitching Lovers
This is a very useful book for stitching lovers. It has very good illustrations and explains the stiches very clearly.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good but ....
does not do SILK embroidery stitches at all.If this is your thing, as it is mine, you will be very sorry here.2 silk stitches and that's all.But if you do crewel and needlepoint there is literally nothing as good as this.Very clear explanations and good shots of the stitches themselves with alpha lettering to guide you...Everything is in full colour and that helps. While the word Sampler is used, there are no projects in this book as it really is a dictionary like Mary Thomas's Dictionary of Embroidery of Stitches. The difference between the two books is Mary's version shows the stitches as both embroidery and needlework while Lucinda tells you that they can be worked either way but does not show them.I guess in the end that's why there is no silk :-)

3-0 out of 5 stars Not an old book, but out of date
Nancy Zieman is a Baby Lock dealer, so this book is heavily slanted in that direction. If you have a Baby Lock, it might be very useful. It is full of very pretty pictures, but not all that much useful information. We beginners need a book that is not an advertisement for a certain kind of machine. What is really needed is a "Machine Embroidery for Dummies" type book since the introduction of the Singer Futura and Quantum Futura machines which run off your computer have made it possible for so many more of us to afford embroidery machines. It's a whole new ballgame, and there are going to be a whole lot more players than ever before!Save your money and keep looking for a book with more substance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book "Ever"
I have purchased many machine embroidery books. This one by far is the best in every way. This is a must have for every machine embroidery person. Nancy Zieman did a great job on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dena from Michigan

4-0 out of 5 stars Making Kumihimo: Japanese Interlaced Braids
For anyone who has Owen's other book, Braids: 250 Patterns from Japan, Peru and Beyond, and thinks you will be getting more patterns to be used on the marudai loom, think again. I built the loom from the first book and thought this was other patterns for flat braids I could use on it. This book is about weaving on a completely different loom, a takadai loom. He does give a diagram of all the parts of the loom if you want to build one but doesn't include any dimensions. I could follow most of the instructions for the braiding but had trouble in spots where he made leaps over information a beginner would need. Someone who weaves already might have a clearer understanding of the instructions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some things are not in the Description
To my shock...there was nothing in the description that mentioned that if you want to make anything in this book you will need about $700.00 in equipment and supllies!

3-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, but not for beginners
If you don't have a lot of stumpwork or embroidery experience then I suggest this is not the book for you. While the designs are lovely and there are step by step instructions (and it is great value as it is two books combined in one), as a beginner myself I am now looking for something a little easier before tackling projects from this book again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you to Jane Nicholas
Photography is again supurb!Directions are clear, list of materials thorough and easy to follow although some brand names are not available in the USA but can be substituted with others. What a great addition to a "Fancy Work" library.

5-0 out of 5 stars mainly positive review
I haven't yet read the book thoroughly because I'm beading a peyote project now but I can say I like the explanation on the history of brick stitch. I think the same shapes done by different people, each work varying in colors andmuch the same shape is somewhat pointless, though I enjoyed the variety of colors and the works are lovely. I think you could have included a wider range of instructions on how to build a sculptoral shape step by step. The works included in the gallery are beautiful and inspiring. Have I writtenbetween 75- 300 words ? I'll let you have the fun of counting (if you ever intend to do so - ha ha ha !!! )Tirza, Israel.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent instructions and projects
I found Beading with Brick Stitch an excellent book for learning how to do brick stitch. On working several of the projects, I found the instructions quite clear, and these were the first time I had done brick stitch. Several pluses put this book on a level above many beading books: the history of brick stitch with pictures of traditional uses; the inclusion of single-stack, double-stack and triple-stack brick stitch graph paper to copy; many different photos of each project as made by the author's friends to demonstrate variations; and a well-done gallery for inspiration. I have found that this book has been able to answer all my brick stitch questions so far, and I have found it one of the best books in the beadworks "Beading with" series.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good book with a few drawbacks
first, i will say that i can misinterpret directions like nobody you've ever known.if this were a talent, i'd be a genius.it makes following even the best written craft instructions a wee bit difficult.Read more
