3-0 out of 5 stars Take the title LITERALLY
I am disappointed by this book. There are no real life pictures of what can be done with this technique - only the cover. It does provide the history, how to do the stitches and a lot of patterns that can be transferred as the "Techniques and 188 Designs" in the title promises. However there is no challenge or inspiration to apply this art.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lovely introduction.
I had never tried whitework before buying this book, but I am glad to own it.It contains a good introduction to the stitches involved in whitework.I found I couldn't put it away - I actually wound up embroidering quilt squares so that I could try as many of the stitches as possible. It helps to have a previous background in sewing and embroidery, but this is a good way to branch out.

4-0 out of 5 stars I have really enjoyed owning this book
The introduction consist of the history of white work, materials for white work, and transferring the designs. Intructions for white work stitches includes stem, chain, lazy daisy, running, backstitch, straight stitch, seeding, satin, padded satin, long-and-short, french knots, overcast, buttonhole, feather, herringbone, chevon, star, shadow, couching, andlattice filling. The designs are beautiful. The only thing I find wrong isit's paperback. With use though the years it will fall apart. Get yourstapler ready! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative
Since I helped in the process of the book, I feel it is a comprehensive study of the history of Penny Squares. Willa took copious notes from various people while touring quilt shows and passed the history of somesquares in this book. This was the first book on Penny Squares when it waspublished, since then many more have been written. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, well researched book set
Often it is difficult to get accurate, well documented information on traditional crafts and handwork.Much of that art form was passed down from generation to generation with very little written record.Deborah Harding has done a wonderful job of finding old newpaper and magazine articles on Redwork, as well as fantastic old patterns reproduced here.A friend of mine loaned me this set of books, and I could never bring myself to return them to her, so I knew I had to have my own set!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding -- Well Worth the Price!
This book would make a lovely gift for anybody interested in textile arts, even for someone with little or no quilting or embroidery experience. The presentation is lovely -- two nicely bound, wonderfully illustrated books nestled inside a snug cardboard jacket. One book features a short discussion of redwork embroidery along with illustrations of exquisitely executed quilts. The other supplies brief instructions (perhaps too brief -- especially the section on transferring the patterns)and a lovely collection of redwork patterns so that readers can create their own redwork quilt. My only quarrel with the book is that a beginner (like me!) might not feel confident with the brief instructions. However, a quick trip to the fabric store to talk to a knowledgable salesperson should dispel any doubts.Despite this small problem, I give the book 5+ stars -- it was great fun to browse through, then to read intently , then to pore over as I selected possible designs for my very first quilt!

5-0 out of 5 stars Red & White
Once again Deborah Harding shares a piece of history with us. Her beautifully organized and prodigiously researched book on redwork quilts is a welcome addition to any quilt lovers library. It seems that no stone was left unturned in her search to bring us a comprehensive documentation of this needleart. I recommend this two volume book to anyone interested in quilts. Not only is it a lovely publication to look at, but it educates us in an area of quilting that little has been written about. Bravo Deborah! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars out of date
If I had a chance to see this bookbefore buying I would not have paid a dime for it.It's almost totally in black and white, and the chapter on "Exploring Colour" has no photos at all. The copyright is l989 with no revisions only reprints. A total waste of money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Machine Embroidery, Stitch Techniques
Had I the opportunity to "thumb through" the book before I bought it - I would not have made this purchase.Virtually all the pictures are in black and white, which make it extremely hard to discern what was done (i.e., layering, decroative stitch, fabric, etc).Yes, the technique is written for you, but a "color" visual along with the written word would have made for a far more superior book.I venture to say, this book will be donated to my public library.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an Excellent Book
A step by step guide to machine stitching. This book would be good for both the beginner and beyond. For each technique there is a box system that gives you a starting point for tension, pressure foot, needle size and lots more. Text gives variations to try. Can be used as a workbook. Start at basic and move on through different threads and materials. Most of these stitches can be done with the most basic sewing machine. Lots of examples using different threads and other materials and lots of diagrams and pictures. My only wish is that more of the pictures were in colour! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly "user friendly" compendium
Pick-A-Pattern Applique & Variations by needlecraft expert Joan Waldman is a thoroughly "user friendly" compendium of pattens, settings, and techniques for personally designing a quilt which will reflect individual stye by changing the blocks in a setting and employing different techniques to stitch or paint the blocks. Pick-A-Pattern Applique & Variations shows that by mixing or matching the pattern pieces, anyone can create a virtually unique, one-of-a-kind quilt with its own distinctive "personality" -- especially when coupled with different methods of hand or machine applique, embroidery, redwork, paint, stencils, or trapunto. With its fifty beautifully designed blocks inspired by 18th and 19th century album quilts, Pick-A-Pattern Applique & Variations is a simply wonderful addition to any dedicated quilter's reference collection. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars more content, less passion, please!
I like this book.Or, rather, I *really* like everything thatcomes after page 68.The first 68 pages, however, gives us anot-so-brief overview on the history of ribbonry in fashion ....We're also treated to beautiful photos of the author's work, whereI've discovered her love for the combination of pink and green.... but as the title of this book states _A PASSION for Ribbonry_,perhaps the purpose of this book was to talk about the author'sdevotion to ribbons and ribbonwork.5-0 out of 5 stars A Passion for Ribbonry
I think this is a wonderful book.I have most of the books on ribbon flowers and each one has something to offer that the other doesn't have. The instructions are very good and easy to follow.Camela gets into ribbonfolding techniques that are not in the other books and I find that veryinteresting and useful in decorating. She gives directions for moreunusual flowers and these are very nice to use in mixed floral bouquets. This beautiful book is a must for any one that loves to do ribbon flowers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful feast for the eyes.
This is a wonderful book, I do not care if all history is correct, I have received many hours of enjoyment just looking at the wonderful pictures and the flowers I made went together quickly and the directions were easy tofollow. That is why I buy this type of book. ... Read more

This oversized book presents many beautiful charted designs of animals set in their habitats. I particularly liked the animal alphabet and animal numerals, as well as the idea of joining several squares featuring animals such as otters and trout and quail into a carpet (though I would use it with her ivy border as a wall hanging - no way is it going on the floor!).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Britannica of Thread Art Techniques
This is a book I refer to constantly since I've just started to learn embroidery. It contains photos of each embroidery technique with a diagram of how the needle works the canvas to get the result shown in the photo above it. Over 240 types of stitches are demonstrated. There are explanations of surface embroidery techniques such as line, couching, chain and band stitches all the way to laidwork. Another chapter gives info on various types of counted thread work such as Assisi, counted cross-stitch, blackwork, hardanger, drawn and pulled. There are chapters covering metal thread embroidery, machine embroidery, applique and quilting. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very inspirational
A gem for embroiderers who like using their creativity more than following patterns. Brown does not only show many different stitches and techniques, but also, in the last chapter, beautiful photographs of the work of trueneedle artists. The feeling I get from this book is that I too, with a bitof practice and fantasy, can make such wonderful things. I reach for thisbook many times!
