4-0 out of 5 stars Just on Okay Book
If you are going to buy a book by these girls I would recommend their other book "What You Can Wear Can Change Your Life".This book has good information if you are going to a summer wedding or a winter wedding, if you are going on a summer vacation vs. a winter vacation. What to wear at the PTA meeting. A fun book, but more information in the other book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Not to Wear for Every Occasion...& time for a yard sale!
Now, I finally know how to dress for every occasion...from weddings(if I'm not the bride) to funerals(if I'm not the deceased)...Truly a great read and continual reference guide for women like me..

2-0 out of 5 stars What Were They Thinking?
I liked the original What Not To Wear, but this one falls wide of the mark. Some of the outfits are fine, but any woman who follows their advice for career dressing is a fool, unless she works in a very, very fashion-forward industry. In any reasonably conservative office, wearing open-toed shoes, fish nets, long, wrappy sweaters, and the like may get you dates, but it sure won't get you a promotion, a raise, or the authority you want.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Patterns
This is a great jumping off point for your own creations.Let your child or grandchild help pick the fabrics.Make use of embroidery, trim, applique, buttons and beads.Good for play or dress.

4-0 out of 5 stars covers a lot of basic patterns
Although from the cover photos you may guess that this book has outdated patterns in it, they really are basic patterns that are always useable for things like T shirts, sweatshirts, nightgowns shorts, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is great!
I love this book; I have been sewing from it daily since I received it.The instructions are excellent and well illustrated. The patterens are terrific, with many variations. This was one of my best purchases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Vintage Styles
This book is exactly what I was looking for - vintage fashion for the entire family. There is beautifully feminine sweaters, shawls, and more for women, as well as stylish sweaters and accessories for men and children. There are varying levels of skills required for these patterns - some easy and some more advanced. There is also a wonderful "vintage" photograph of the original pattern for you to compare to your newer, more updated version.Lots to look at in this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great job
I found this book very helpful because I love vintage clothes, I own the previous book published by Lion Brand featuring vintage garments, and I thought it was somewhat difficult to try to find yarn substitutions and to modify the designs slighty in order to make them wearable, but this book saved me the work and I think the authors did a great job adapting the patterns to be worn with contemporary clothing but still keeping a vintage look about them.
2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty ordinary stuff
In the whole book there were only one or two items that attracted me. Most items are pretty ordinary; some are distinguished by frills or other design elements that I don't happen to like. Not a terrible book; and maybe in time I'll warm up to it. But if I'd seen it at a bookstore, I wouldn't have bought it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a very good book, as all the other books that Mrs. Martensson has published. It is very detailed, shows how to do all the things with plenty of illustrations and photographs, and gives the patterns in the most common sizes. It even shows you how to do some basic alterations to them for a great deal of garments. The only thing I missed in this book is a basic bra pattern, but other than that, all other patterns are great, and I have used them extensively. I sew most of my clothes, and these patterns have made making my underwear and lingerie a pleasure. I have enjoyed making the things in this and in other books I have bought from Kwik Sew for many years. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars very good book for people that design hats for a hobby!
I have this book and I like it.You can get some nice ideas from it, but if you make hats for a living...it's not for you. It is really for someone who plays at hat making.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Hat tips and Ideas
I beg to differ with others comments that this book wasn't as helpful as they would have liked. It gave great examples of what was possible in design. I found it more interesting than the 'from the neck up book' which was too technical. First off, the photography is great. The examples of hats are awesome. I loved the project for the appliqued garland straw brim. Overall,it's a great book to have if you're interested in millinery.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Photos
This book has wonderful photos of all kinds of hats. However, it only contains instructions for making a few of them. I tried to make the Water Lily hat but found the instructions confusing and could not figure it out. However, if you are browing for hat embellishment suggestions or just wantto look at nice photos to get ideas for hats the book is great. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars More than I really wanted to know about sheep
I would have preferred more patterns and less information about the Morehouse Farm animals. If I wanted to know about sheep, I'd buy a book on sheep. The patterns themselves are nothing new or earth shattering.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love it for it's simplicity
While I am compelled to agree with the reviewers who feel that this book is very basic, I can't help but love it for the simplicity of it's patterns. There are no fancy techniques required of the patterns in this book and there is no call for the inclusion of novelty yarns and trendy patterns; Merino Knits is a back-to-basics series of patterns for people who want to create useful and timeless knitted garments and items. The fact that the book features only Morehouse Farm merino yarns is a selling point for any knitter who has worked with, and fallen in love with, these dreamy, buttery yarns. The photography is elegant and the insider's glimpse into Morehouse Farm is a real treat.I adore this book because it reminded me of the beauty of simple knits, something which I needed after being inundated with countless uber-trendy books and patterns.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the lace
For me the book is worth having for the lace patterns alone.I've always loved lace yarn and have a lot of it, but do not have the time or patience to knit complicated patterns for lace shawls and scarves. This book has 5 shawl/scarf patterns plus a laceweight pouch pattern that look easy to do yet are more than just a simple garter stitch. Before I even finished looking through the book I cast on the Huck Lace Shawl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Traditional Tailoring Techniques
I found this book and the men's wear companion to be extremely informative and one of the best guides around for learning how to create a tailored garment using the traditional techniques as opposed to the "speed" tailoring that is so popular.I was disappointed that the women's book did include pants.Everyone is not going to buy both books.A basic pair of women's trousers could have been included.I was also surprised that neither book included topcoats or raincoats with zip/button-out linings. They are not just long jackets; there are differences in construction techniques.I also think that there should have been a little more clarification of some things. For instance, it took me a while to realize that silk-finished thread was actually Mettler's silk-finish cotton thread and not a type of silk thread.Minor gripes in comparison to the knowledge to be gained therein by those who want to make couture-quality garments.

3-0 out of 5 stars Carbon copy of men's edition, but without the great pants
I bought Classic Tailoring Techniques: A Construction Guide for Men's Wear first. It's great. The text teaches you how to make beautifully tailored garments. I wanted to see those techniques specifically for women's jackets, trousers, and skirts so I bought this edition. Except for the section on pants and skirts, the text is identical in both books. The sections on women's pants and skirts is like anything you'd find in a commercial pattern instruction sheet - nothing special at all. Couture techniques for making beautifully tailored pants for women are not described or even hinted at in this book. Actually, it's not the fault of the author -- tailoring techniques are actually designed for men's clothing. Couture techniques are essentially for women's clothing. If you want to learn to make tailored jackets (men's or women's), either book gives the same instructions. For tailored trousers, use the men's book. For women's skirts, see Couture Sewing Techniques by Claire B. Shaeffer. (Actually, Claire Shaeffer's Vogue patterns for jackets and trousers are probably a better purchase than this book.)

2-0 out of 5 stars The same sweater repeated throughout with slight variations
I'm so disappointed by this book. No imagination!!! Every single sweater has a round neckline whether for the pullovers or for the two plain cardigans. Not a single v-neck, shawl collar, or square neckline at all. The shapes of every single sweater appears to be the same - square and boxy. All have the same plain, straight sleeve. The differences are in the yarn and nearly half are a rib stitch. The others are basic stockinette. If I could be so bold... please save your money and go to an on-line free pattern website for much cuter and infinitely more creative designs with instructions that are equally as clear. I give two stars because the basic shape is ok despite the fact that it is used throughout the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't hesitate to purchase this one - a classicthat will be used by knitters at any level!
I didn't plan on reviewing another book, but when I saw this book I knew I had to purchase this one. This is one book that any knitter will use over and over again regardless of his/her knitting level. Don't hesitate to purchase this one!
5-0 out of 5 stars I've been looking for a book like this for years
I just got my copy in the mail and am excited about making just about all of the sweaters in it.They are very basic and not trendy at all, yet they look very much like what I'd buy in any department store today. The patterns look very simple to make and the instructions tell you what weight of yarn to buy if you don't want to use what the pattern calls for.I would imagine that the designs will be in style for many years and I'm glad to have this in my library. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely patterns... but too small
I love the patterns in this book, but they run too tight through the chest for most of my family. The instructions are clear, well written. Nice, but I wouldn't recommend the patterns for anyone who is above a B cup. They pull at the armholes and they simply don't go large enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Knits
If you are into vintage knitted clothing you'll absolutely love this book!I've found it to be full of patterns I want to make.It isn't often that I get a book, open it up, and want everything. Not just sort of want, urn for. They are BEAUTIFUL!
5-0 out of 5 stars A superb sourcebook for intermediate to advanced knitters
Vintage Knits: Thirty Knitting Designs From Rowan For Men And Women is a fantastic collection of knitwear designs drawing inspiration from the fashion, simplicity, and charm of the 40's, 50's and 60's. Full-color photographs, extensive row-by-row instructions, black-and-white diagrams, pattern keys and more make the projects for various knitted tops easy-to-follow. Vintage Knits does presuppose that the reader is familiar with basic knitting skills and written knitting notation; there are no express tutorials. 5-0 out of 5 stars this is a makeup-ART book
This book is so expensive because it is simply an art book, showing Kevyn Aucoin's art. It is not a step by step guide. It's a beautiful book and worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars True art in make up
While his other books are more of a how to on make up, this is more of an art book than a guide.Kevyn Aucoine was a master of the art, no question, and he made some of the most beautiful faces ever captured on film. The average so and so will never use things like face tape, false eyelashes, and spirit gum.I'm one of the rare few who isn't in theater and uses those things on occation for a fancy dress occation! You have to know what you're doing for some of these looks.Plus, the finished product was meant to be photographed rather than seen by the public in a normal setting.Enjoy the finished products for what they are, but take care if and when putting together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone
After hesitating to purchase this book due to the negative reviewer, I finally got a copy and disagree with her.Yes, some of the designs are very 'young', but a lot of things seem very youth-oriented lately (obviously more a reflection of my advancing years than anything else!).And with the eclectic mix in this book cetainly not all of them fall into that category.Plus, while I have quite a few handbag design & embellishment books myself, there are imaginative ideas in here I haven't seen anywhere else, and ones I'm actually eager to try.Stephanie Kimura's work is obviously more sophisticated, but these are a lot of fun and in my view very much worth a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for handicraft enthusiasts and weekend hobbyists
The Decorated Bag: Embellishing Handbags, Purses, And Totes by Genevieve A. Sternbenz is an eclectic collection and guide to the fun and inspiring art of embellishing hand-carried bags, beautifying their various designs in creative and interesting ways. The Decorated Bag is very highly recommended for handicraft enthusiasts and weekend hobbyists.
1-0 out of 5 stars Fooled by the Cover
I was attracted to this book by its cover, so I pre-ordered it. After waiting 3+ months past the release date (Feb 6, 2006) it finally arrived in early May. Wow, what a disappointment!I was expecting some upscale professional design ideas for handbag embellishment. Instead, the ideas in this book are very cutsey-poo and childish. The only nice design is on the cover. These designs might be appropriate for very young girls (faux fur, poodle appliques, felt cat with rhinestones, pom-poms, costume jewelry decorations, etc) but not for the sophisticated handbag creator.A better choice for elegant handbag embellishment would be Stephane Kimura's BAGS WITH STYLE, or Barbara Weilands new book SEW EASY DESIGNER BAGS & TOTES. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Pants Book in the Universe
After not sewing for about 15 years, I decided it was time to make some nice pants. My body had changed and I had difficulty identifying the myriad fitting problems. What a disaster!!!! Of course, I had invested hundreds of dollars in wonderful material and there it sat. I bought this book and went to work. This lady knows her stuff. My pants are fab and I finally understand how to fit pants to my body.I encourage any sewer at any level of accomplishment to get this wonderful book. The language is clear, the drawings and photographs are explicit and specific and address the process of making pants in a modern way. Lynn, wherever you are, thanks for a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Pants Book
The "Easy Guide to Sewing Pants" is the only book you will ever need to have a great pair of pants that truly fits you perfectly.I had tried many different approaches over the years but never achieved the fit I needed until I bought this book.Ms. MacIntyre's diagrams for fitting problem areas are clear, easy- to-follow; and best of all, they work! Her step-by-step instructions on how to make design changes to your basic pattern will give you many different looks with having to go through the fitting process again.I was so excited when I made a style change to my pattern and didn't have to worry about whether they would fit.No more frustration!! If that's not enough, I also found Ms. MacIntyre's construction techniques to be absolutely the best and gave me very professional results. The "Easy Guide to Sewing Pants" is a "must" for any sewer's library.

The book is interesting to read if you are interested in cultural history. The patterns are variated, you can knit some of the vests exactly as the pattern tells you, others are inspirational to your own fantasy. You can make your own variant of the garment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short articles about design and technique for knitters
Threads Magazine used to publish an occasional knitting article. After much hemming (!) and hawing, they decided to concentrate on sewing only. This was a loss to knitters but the Threads publishers have collected the articles into a series of books. Thanks, Taunton Press!4-0 out of 5 stars More inspiration than instruction
If you love looking at beautiful original knitting, then you will love this book. Despite never having knit anything from its pages, it is a book I come back to again and again. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Projects vary greatly in difficulty level so as to appeal to all types of users
There are so many books covering crochet and knitting and that could be hard to see the need for yet another: a new book would have to incorporate a lot of appeal, from a zany cover to original patterns - and KNIT & CROCHET PONCHOS, WRAPS, CAPES & SHRUGS does just this. Projects vary greatly in difficulty level so as to appeal to all types of users, use the latest novelty yarns as well as classics, and provide a wide range of styles. A hardcover with odd-cut edges and bright cover grabs the eye, while lovely photos of completed projects accompanies clear step-by-step designs for added attraction. It not only 'shows' well: it holds curb appeal and an 'easy use' format which is most inviting.
5-0 out of 5 stars maid Marian
How can I resist knitting a cape with my name on it? Buying this book sight unseen, I was really delighted when it came. However, I am not an enthusiast of the way the instructions are presented. It doesn't work when the patterns get harder. Some of the patterns as the aran poncho become extremely complicated and you have to look on several pages while doing it. The Upcountry poncho (knitted) is another lovely one. I also want to use my Kureyon yarn in the Rainbow poncho.
5-0 out of 5 stars Variety is the spice of life
I am so impressed with the patterns packed into this book, there is certainly something for everyone no matter what your taste in here. You just have to see the "Maid Marian Cloak", and one of my favorites is the crocheted "Cinderella Cape".I love the layout of the book, the schematics are very clear, and I myself really like the way the different sizes are presented....very easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
My sister (a Professional) recommened I purchase this book.I am glad I waited for the newly revised edition of this book. It's very good.It touches on all aspect's of sewing.Pattern adjustment's, style, color, construction, ect.I would recommend this book to anyone who is a beginneror has not atteneded any formal instruction classes for sewing. The onlything I didn't like was that the illustration's were drawn and not actualphotographs. But the drawings were still adequate. They wereunderstandable.Buy it.You'll be glad you did.I also bought TheComplete Photo Guide to Sewing by Singer.Together they work very well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Couture The Art of Fine Sewing by Roberta Carr
This book is so good that I am going to purchase it.I checked it out of our local, public library and someone else must have loved it enough to cut pages out of it.Roberta Carr writes about what every sewer wants to know. She tells what a perfect fit entails. She describes perfectly how to makea "single-thread" dart, how to work with the forbidden BIAS, thedos and don'ts of buttonholes, etc.I learned volumes from this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Medieval Costume and How to Recreate it
This book is a "dreams-answered" book on medieval clothing design and sewing for me. Finally, some tricky things in medieval clothing design were explained or sketched. This along with some historical information makes it a superior book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Potentially useful, if you're careful how you use it
As other reviewers have said, Hartley's book is aimed at theatrical costumers, not reenactors.Because of that fact and because it was written long before archaeological research began to correct long-held misapprehensions about medieval costume, its advice about how a particular costume was made is often quite wrong. But Hartley's book does something I've never seen before in any book on medieval costume--it urges the reader to look at period artwork and think about what the person wearing such a costume in the artwork would have been doing and what tools he or she would have been using while doing it.This insight is, in my opinion, worth the meagre price of the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great for theatre costumes, not for historic recreators
This book is very nice if your goal is creating theatrical costumes. There is very little for the serious costumer. The book is written at a very high level, with emphasis on creating something that looks like the period costume, rather than accurately recreating a historic costume. ... Read more

I don't own this book....YET!!!It is definitely going to be on my short list of knitting books to purchase (after I buy A Fourth Treasury of Knitting Patterns by Barbara G. Walker).
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Buy the Book
If you are more than a scarf knitter and want to tailor or design your own sweaters, quit wasting your time reading reviews, and buy this book. You need it and you will enjoy it!
5-0 out of 5 stars Which do I make first?
I recently borrowed the updated version of this book from the library and quickly realized I needed a copy of my own. I'm not the most experienced knitter, but have been designing crocheted patterns since my early 20's and the idea of creating my own knitted sweaters appeals to me. As one reviewer wrote, this is not the book for fashion knitters, but therein lies its worth- this is not a book that will become outdated in a year or two, something that greatly appeals to my practical side.
