5-0 out of 5 stars A great look at the "good old days."
I've been fascinated with the 50's since I was a child.Almost everything I've read on the 50's has been clouded with cynicism. While reading this book, I really felt like I was transported back in time and into the minds of people who were living in this time.I felt it did a great job of explaining "materialism" and "housewives" (that had normally gotten such a bad reputation).I just don't think I can say enough good things about this book.I'm glad I bought it, and will hopefully share it with others who share my fascination and enthusiasm.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Long Last...
a book that celebrates that wonderful decade known as the 1950's and does so without irreverance, parody, or sarcasm. I came across the wonderful gem of a book quite by accident. For years, I had wished that someone would write a book that highlighted this time in American history and Bill Yenne does a SUPERB job.4-0 out of 5 stars Going home to the Fifties with Madison Avenue.
I was intrigued when I first saw this pop up on Amazon while looking for another book about the Fifties and I placed an order. Now having read and looked through it a more apt title would be 'Going Home to the White Middle Class Suburban Fifties'.The author covers the period with a rather narrow focus, concentrating mainly on home life in the newly built suburbs and the reason for this is because nearly all the interesting illustrations (paintings and photos) are images taken from ads of the time. There are chapters about The Living Room, In the Kitchen, The Bed and Bath, Watching Television, all areas where pictures from ads would be available but no chapter, for instance, about suburban shopping, supermarkets and malls were not heavy advertisers in mass-market magazines back then.It does seem odd to allow the availability of ad images to dictate the contents of a book about the recent past. 2-0 out of 5 stars More towards knitting
I bought this book but I did not really read carefully, this book has knitting, and more knit than crochet and the crocheted scarve are nothing worth looking at, yarn they use not as nice as the knit.More to beginner crocheters.. They could of been better

3-0 out of 5 stars Immediate gratification
The five-star patterns in this book are great for beginner to intermediateknitters looking for some fun, quick-to-complete projects. (I don't really crochet, but the crochet projects may inspire me to pick up a hook and give it a try).
4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the want-to-be knitter

5-0 out of 5 stars A quantum leap in this design team's talent!
A year or so ago, I borrowed a copy of _Paintbox Knits_, the first book collaberation of this design team.I have to say that I was a little underwhelmed:there were three or four patterns that piqued my interest, but not one for which I would bump another project's priority on my "to knit" list. The patterns were simple enough for me, as a busy mom and newbie knitter, but they seemed "gimmicky", relying on busy color schemes that reminded me of boxy machine-knit store brands, more than anything.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Patterns have errors
I bought this book for the cute patterns and sat down yesterday to make the "mesh hat" in this book. There are many errors and typos in this pattern.I am a very experienced crocheter and was able to compensate for the typos and steps that are entirely omitted in the instructions. I am not going to waste my time on any of the other patterns in this book and don't recommend that others buy the book to begin with.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Crocheted Hats
If you are like me,someone who fell in love with that famous crocheted cloche worn by Ali McGraw in "Love Story" and have been searching for a grouping of brow-kissing hats with that style and romantic ambiance for years, the pocket-sized 89 page, 22 pattern "Vogue Knitting on the Go: Crocheted Hats" may be just the thing for you.
4-0 out of 5 stars Cute, hip hats...
All the hats provided in this book are cute and hip -- every single one of them. The only problem with this book is locating the yarn required for the hats. (Since I'm a beginner, I haven't learned how to substitute the required yarn with another.) My local crafts and arts stores don't carry the yarn though I eventually did find it online. Other than that, it's a great book -- small and light enough to carry around in your bag. I recommend it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning researchers!
Absolutely love this book.Though it is simple, I feel it's one of the essential clothing books if you're doing recreations. The layouts are great, the explanations well-done, and there are easy-to-follow diagrams for patterns.Documentation in the form of illuminated manuscripts and rubbings from funerary monuments, etc, also are VERY helpful.Personally, I don't make a single thing without consulting this book at least once! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Basics with an open mind
This was my 2nd book from Norris and his style does take you back. If you read the introductions you see that it is a book about Norris as an expert sighting himself. What you get is a rambling sometimes difficult to follow read BUT... you also get an incredible amount of information on how his genire viewed the fashions. You understand how the myths for the period got started and why. You get visuals of all kinds. Men's,women, lace, braids, trims... they may not be in any order but...The plates, pictures and references can lead you to where you want to go on the internet or in the library AND give you all the inspiration you need to start something in your studio!I can't live without this one! Keep an open mind and study study study.

4-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining introductory volume.
I found this book very informative and entertaining. The costume information is voluminous, the illustrations are clear, and there are brief historical notes on the famed personages plus amusing anecdotes. There are also contemporary quotes on fashion and behavior.4-0 out of 5 stars A Valuable and In-expensive Book for a Costumer's Library
I have read in the following reviews of this book, that it is inaccurate and offers little in garment construction information. Let me say that I have found this book highly useful and refer to it frequently along with my Uffizi Museum book, National Gallery book, and Janet Arnold's: Patterns of Fashion. I bought this book originally from the Huntington Library giftshop. This book offers a brief overview of Tudor Fashion from all the most important countries and regions in Western Europe, English fashion of the time receiving the most attention. There is a brief section in the back on dyes and colors (mainly for England). The line drawings are all in black and white. There are historical quotes of descriptions of outfits worn at noteable occasions (Queen Margot of France, my favorite). The sections on Spain and Italy I found interesting. I particularly enjoyed the drawn cataloguing of jewelry, gloves, hats, shoes and swords for each country. There are even a few drawings of corsets and farthingales. I have found this book to be a good resource to add to my collection of research materials. If you have an eye for detail and the desire to experiment and or research further how things were made, you will enjoy this book. This is not a "how to", but a good idea book. I don't regret it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFULINSTRUSTIONS! BEAUTIFUL PICTURES!
I would have liked to give this book a 10 STAR rating. I bought this book not just for the purses BUT for the clear and very easy to follow directions for the weaving! I used the stitches I learned in this book for other projets. I am a visual learner and this book is better than more $$$$ books I bought just to learn the stitches. Color through out. I did not find any of the colors muted as another stated.
1-0 out of 5 stars Do not choose if you are looking to make high fashion bags
I totally disliked this book...if you want to make craft show type stuff then perhaps this is a good choice but I came lloking for info on how to make high fashion high quality beaded handbags likened to some of todays top designers and thisbag did not even stracth the surface of what I needed.I would only suggest this book for those looking to make little trinkets in thier spare time certainly not for resale.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concentrates on beaded purses
Start at the cover of this book that features five necklaces. You'll say, "Wow!How can I make these gorgeous little necklace purses?"Author Enid Taylor shows you how.Bead stitching is pretty much the same from book to book, offering the same techniques shown here: brick, square, peyote, and netting stitches. This book is special because Enid shows you how those stitches combine to make a fabulous purse.Enid, a home economics teacher for 24 years, started a craft studio in 1982, so there's lots of teaching experience behind her book.Although her craft studio's focus was on lacemaking, spinning, and needlework, her expertise in beading shines through. Not only are there many techniques shown for the body of the purses, but there are multiple ways shown to make the neckchains and fanciful decorative finishes. If your aim is to concentrate your efforts on amulet necklaces, this is the book for you! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Start w/the Bubble Sweater & work up to the Enchanted Forest
I positively love this book. How can you go wrong with the patterns for the Enchanted Forest cardigan, the Bubble Sweater and the Counterpane Pullover all in one book?I am also fond of the handsome Missoni Man's (or women's) Cardigan with a doubled shawl collar (easily do-able, even for those with intermediate skills) and the Cropped Hooded Sweater from Joan Vass.I've made three of those -- it's easy to substitute yarns (just double-strand something pretty), there is little shaping and the result is fabulous.3-0 out of 5 stars Designs not so chic; not for beginners
The sweater designs looked plain as if they were taken from each designer's bargain bin. There wasn't much that inspired me to knit one of the patterns right away. Also there were only a handful of patterns for the beginner -- the rest were forintermediate and expert knitters.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beginners need not apply!
The majority of the patterns in this book require to you be an "expert" or "experienced" knitter. As a beginner/intermediate, that left me with very little to choose from. I was also disappointed in the lack of true wearability of most of these patterns. That aside,I like classic, time tested, designs that are updated to look contemporary, and did not find these appealing. Each designer seemed to be trying to out do the other, and some are way over the top.If you're an expert knitter who's looking for gimmicky sweaters to "WOW" your friends-this book would come in handy;everyone else will likely be disappointed. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The first was better ...
I purchased this book after buying Ms. Kimura's first, "Bags With Style".Though this has more fun ideas, the same great construction and fabric chapters, and easy to use instructions, I just did not find it quite as inspirational as her first.Patterns are included and the instructions are clear and concise. The accessories did not wow me and some of the bag designs seemed a bit redundant. There are some fun ones in here, especially the one on the cover!Still a good book but I would recommend her first more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Improving on Excellence!
Could a follow-up book possibly be just as good--if not better--than the original? Author Stephanie Kimura proves it can in her wonderful follow-up to the hugely successful Bags with Style. In this book, Stephanie goes beyond just bags and adds instruction on how to create some of the most fashionable accessories that are staples to any stylish woman's wardrobe. Yes, there are mostly bags, but you'll also learn how to create shrugs, shawls, belts, collars, cell phone carriers and even a romantic stole! Beginners and advanced sewers alike will revel in the 27 projects from the casual to the exquisite. Success is inevitable when you couple the full-size patterns (we're talking pattern company quality patterns) with 200 fabulous photos and 65 helpful how-to illustrations. As Stephanie puts it, this book "is for talented and creative women like you." When you put it like that, how can you possibly resist?!

5-0 out of 5 stars My review for Bags/Accessories w/Style

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Presentation, User-Friendly Pattermaking!
I have been drafting patterns for years and have read many patternmaking books, from the usual books found at public libraries to the expensive, comprehensive pattern-drafting textbooks. Many books offer the instruction needed to draft an effective, well-fitting pattern. However, many are very costly, dry, technically focused with little to offer for readability, photos, and enjoyablity.Make Your Own Patterns: An Easy Step-by-Step Guide to Making Over 60 Patterns, is a wonderful blend of affordability, how-to drafting skill, clear, easy instruction, and a pleasing format and layout that makes for optimum user-friendly use, particularly for someone new to making their own patterns.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic addition!
I just got this book and read through it, and I have to say I am very pleased! I haven't made anything from it yet, but the instructions are very clear. The only things I disliked were the clothes they made for the model in the pictures are hideous, also I didn't see any drawings or instructions for working on the BACK of a bodice. The drawings are very good. I love that it comes with quarter-sized pattern peices in the back which you can size up and adjust to fit you if you decide not to make your own from the step by step guide to a basic bodice she gives you.

1-0 out of 5 stars not written for the people who need it most
Patterns are so easy to find nowadays for $1.99 (or at the very least, at half price), that only those with fitting difficulties would want to draft from scratch, and this book assumes that the user has the perfect, very young figure.I am quite experienced at both alterations and drafting from body measurements, and I can tell you that the thing which is most overlooked is that the greatest variation in the body is from the side view, while her waist and hip values assumes half of each measurement falls in the front and half falls in the back of the body, which is true for almost no one who is not on the cast of "Friends." If you have fitting problems sufficient to drive you to want to make your own patterns, this book will do nothing for you, whether you have a large or drooping bust, large derriere, low abdomen, flabby upper arms, etc.I personally prefer "Boddymapping" by Kathy Illian, "Fantastic Fit for Every Body" by Gale Grigg Hazen, or even "Every Sewer's Guide to the Perfect Fit" by Mary Morris & Sally McCann.A to-die-for pattern-making book (although it does not cover fitting) is "Make Your Own Patterns" by Adele Margolis. It is not flashy, but the wealth of information is breathtaking and inspiring. If you want to be avant-garde, then "Make Your Own Japanese Clothes" by John Marshall is a super little book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative, Easy and Wonderful
I have always loved Debbie Ware kits, and make them frequently for baby shower gifts. Now, I don't have to get the kit, because there is a whole slew of fabulous patters in this hard to find book!Easy to follow, bright colors and funky designs, these are gifts that everyone remembers and loves.I couldn't be happier with this book.Debbie Ware has great customer service as well - if you don't understand something, email them and they will get right back to you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adorable ~ Would not recommend for Beginners
This book is wonderful!I have made the booties and hats and want to make the sweater on the front for my daughter (and enter it in the fair this summer before she wears it this fall!).Instructions are very good but if a beginner was to look at these they might toss the book across the room.I have been knitting for 20+ years and found the designs of the clothing a little on the advanced side (color changes, techniques, etc.), but the hats and booties were basic.Ms. Ware likes to use expensive yarn too ($5-$7/hank/skein) but the projects do turn out beautifully with her recommended yarn brand.Great book!Would recommend to any intermediate or above knitter.I will be purchasing more books from this designer in the future!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Whimsy and Excellent Instructions
The photographs of the items in this book are like looking at the beautiful cakes and pastries in a bakery... but without the calories. The outfits, beanies, and booties are toooooo adorable. However, what really makes this book worth every cent I paid are the straightforward instructions and the tips that accompany each project. I am tempted to make some of the four pointed beanies for myself. They are beautiful and festive... I can't say enough about this book. I just hope Mrs. Ware comes up with another publication as beautiful and creative as this. Enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scrumptious bags!
I was amazed when I opened this book at how luscious these bags are! Rich brocades and deeply died ombre ribbons dominate the pattern style, much different than the lacy romantic bag on the cover. All the bags are very easy to make (the fabrics and 'main ribbon embellishment' tell a lovely visual story without needing another thing.) The basic bags look so rich when you're done that you can't believe they're hand made. The authors tell where to get the supplies, (always a relief.) The materials from the cited suppliers are VERY expensive and so if you are more the 'do my own thing' artist, you can look around and replace most of the fabrics and ribbons with any materials you love. And if you horde vintage lace, buttons, and tapestries, you will end up with a masterpiece by dressing it up even more with your own bits and pieces. You can also follow your own preference for bead v. crochet v. sew v. embroider to dress up the basic pattern - and there are a few variation ideas in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book by Talented Authors
This book was on my "must have" list as soon as I knew that it was going to be released and it did not disappoint!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Most of the ideas in this book just seemed so silly.I am a petite woman who has a hard time finding clothes that fit, even when wearing petites. The little cartoon drawings made it even worse. This was a big waste of my money.Given the other reviews, I thought this would be a good alterations guide.I sure was wrong there!I wish I could find a book on alterations for petite women who want to look professional.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fine for novices and those who don't mind the "homemade" look
As an experienced sewer and someone who has to alter nearly every item of clothing I purchase, I was really looking forward to getting this book, based on the reviews. However, this book is a joke.It offers very little in the way of TRUE altering--ideas like "Make an elastic band to hold too-long sleeves up around your elbows" does NOT qualify as good technical advice, in my humble opinion. The "fashions" (if you can call them that) recommended in this book are grossly outdated (I suspect they were already passe even in 1995 when the book was printed), and they all have a grossly home-fashioned look to them.If you are really into baubles, embellishments, and that frumpy "mom made it" look, buy this book.If you are looking for a good guide to TRUE altering, spend your money elsewhere. My new copy is getting donated to the library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good ideas, some seem difficult to execute
I bought this book with the idea of trying to alter ready-to-wear clothes so they fit better---I wanted to find a book that included basic techniques (hemming jeans/pants, making long sleeve shirts into short sleeve shirts, etc.) as well as more advanced ones (altering suit jackets to fit better, adding darts to shirts, skirts). I'm not sure if other such books exist (most other alterations/tailoring books explain how to alter/fit patterns when you're sewing a piece of clothing from scratch, not when altering an already-made piece of clothing) but I would be curious to if there are any others that people would recommend. I've seen that there is a book called 'Altering Women's Ready-To-Wear' by Mary Roehr (seems relevant) but don't know anything about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars All American a style book by Tommy Hilfiger
The book was in great condition when I received it, just as the article said.I am very happy with amazon.com and my seller. The only thing is that the book took 6 days to get to me instead of 2 as stated, but I understand that the tragedy didn't make that very easy. The book is very interesting and has a great amount of information on Tommy Hilfiger that I was looking for to do a research paper. It is interesting and very informative to read. Thanks

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much history - not enough style
I puchased this book expecting Hilfiger's guidance in what clothes to purchase, and how to develop my wardrobe for work and social situations. What I got was a history book - history of Hilfiger and of various styles (denim, suits, shoes, shirts etc.). Though informative, I was looking for a guide and this book does not meet that goal. The book was interesting but not useful. Probably best used as a "coffee table" book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Should be 5 stars but. . .
As other reviewers have noted, there are uncorrected errors.Still, since all of the designs are charted, most of the errors are easy to spot.
1-0 out of 5 stars Infuriating...great hats, world's worst instructions...
I'm a 40 year knitter and I think I possess the basic skills to navigate any knitting book. However, this one is a real chore. What is so painful is that there are some fabulous hats here. Creative, hard to find hats. What got in my way? Well, they are all in worsted weight, which the author might have made a note of more prominently. She dismisses using fingering weight as "too many stitches" but really, it is a hat. If you are ever going to use a lot of stitches, a hat is the time.
1-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful hats, terrible charts
The hat ideas are wonderful. Too bad there are so many errors in the charts. I contacted Lark books for a copy of their errata (a correction sheet for the errors in this book). What I received was a very poor photocopy of the corrected charts. The corrected charts were so small, and the photocopy was so many generations from the original, that I could absolutely not read it. I counted twenty charts from the book that have corrections! I am an experienced knitter, but I have a hard time getting into a new knitting project, knowing that the charts are wrong. I contacted Lark books repeatedly to get a cleaner, more legible copy of the errata. So far, I have received nothing. I'm very disappointed. Further, the gauge she suggests is too small. More specific instructions with regards to yarns and needle sizes would have been very helpful. ... Read more
