Good on all but technique
As a total beginner, I thought this book was very strong on presenting information about materials and archival vs. non-archival and such.However, I found the author's instructions on specific techniques to be lacking...I often had to read them many times just to understand a fairly simple procedure.

This book is worth its weight in gold!
As a beginning framer, I found this book to be a wealth of valuable information on equipment and techniques.It covers every aspect of framing and answered most, if not all, of my questions.This is a wonderfulresource for anyone interested in learning the art of framing.

This one gives you your money's worth of useful information!
This is simply the best book currently out there for the do-it-yourself framer. In particular,after looking at dozens of books in libraries andbookstores, it's the only book I found that really gives satisfactoryattention to archival considerations, pros and cons of different methods ofmounting artwork, and protection of the framed materials from moisture inthe environment (a real area of concern if you're living in an extremelyhigh-humidity region, as I am!). After an hour or so of browsing throughthe book, I already felt I had gotten my money's worth in answeredquestions and useful information. Excellent book: my top pick
I have been doing amateur framing for about seven years, and have read a lot of framing books.This book is (easily and definitely) my pick as the best book for beginning (and more experienced) amateur picture framers.What I liked about the book: * lots of helpful colourful photos; * easy to read text: * shows that you don't have to spend a lot of money to get into this hobby / profession and produce excellent results; * covers many useful topics without getting into the more advanced, more complex topics (e.g., gesso); * at the end of each section, the author summarizes the important points.The best thing I like about this book is that the author provides many rules-of-thumb; for example, how much of a border should there be around a piece of art work; how wide should be the frame; how deep should be the rabbet; what colours are best given the colour of the artwork; etc.It is also nice to know that most of the things I taught myself (the hard way) are "correct"! With this book, I now understand why I am doing it right!
About Mat, Mount and Frame It Yourself
I have been looking for a good book on this subject for some time and was not impressed with what was available. This book gives good information on on each of the topics (Matting, Mounting, Framing) and is quite easy to follow. Good information on selecting Mat colours for single and double mats and some Mat decoration ideas. In all a very good guide to the subject and some very useful tips to help you produce a professional result.

A brief intro with gaping holes
I can deal with the coy jokes scattered within the side-notes.I can handle the briefity of each section.But there are a lot of concepts that the authors just jump right into without explaining what the terms mean or the tools involved.What is "asphaltum"?Don't you think that it should be defined before jumping into an entire section on it?I'm not above looking things up, but I don't think that I should have to supplement an instructional book for beginners.
Not an introduction
Purchased this book, looking for a beginer's guide to start waterguilding my own frames.It was NOT an easy step by step instruction book.Authors seem very well versed in subject.But it was not easy for a beginner to follow.

An introductory book, with difficult-to-find Gilding Recipes
In the mysterious and rarified world of fine art picture-frame making and gilding, this 37-page book is an important introduction to the art of water gilding, mostly by way of its recipes and techniques as learned and practiced by two sucessful gilders.Difficult-to-find recipes are carefully detailed, even if discussions of technique sometimes left me craving greater detail and specific references to exact photos in the text.The organizational structure and chronological presentation chosen by the authors in their description of the many-stepped processes of gilding and patina-building confused me at times, so I simply reorganized the details in my reference notes to better meet my needs.There is minimal information (other than the pros/cons of various wood species) useful in actually making built-up frames from unfinished wood, plaster or whatever, so you'll have to get that help elsewhere.And, sadly, there is minimal information on sources of the numerous gilding materials and tools you'll need (many of which are unique to gilding, obscure and rearely seen in retail art stores), so you'll have to search the internet on your own - suppliers are out there.Regardless of these minor inconveniences, this is a rare and precious short reference on old-world, difficult-to-find water gilding recipes useful as the basis for initial experimentation or for extending your existing knowledge.If you are new to the art of water gilding, you have just begun your journey with this introductory book, but you will undoubtedly refer back to it over and over as you experiment and learn more from other references and practitioners of the art.For great fun, visit one of the authors shop in Santa Fe, NM where you'll see gilding in action behind the counter. ... great book
I was amazed at how simple and easy to understand this book was but still so helpful in learning how to take great pictures for scrap booking.
Good beginner's book
This is, as the title suggests, a good basic introductory book for those who are new to photography. It certainly gives a good initial run-down on all the over-arching principles of taking better shots with the main focus being on composition rather than tech specs. It's an easy read, and the steps suggested should prove useful to its target audience. I found it quite specific to scrapbooking though. A comprehensive and creative guide!
I am a custom framer myself, and even I got ideas for frame designs!The book is an extremely comprehensive guide for standard framing techniques, but what I really love are the more creative, non-standard techniques Tonia shows as well.A must for the crafter who wants to display her artwork, but who wants to "do-it-herself".

Framing even I can do!
I am scared of power tools and anything that involves measuring, but Tpnia shows easy and professional ways to frame art without having to take a wood shop class! Love this book and I am proud to have my art in it!
