Book is almost useless
This is the worst how-to book I ever read. I thought it would teach me how to mount and frame a lithograph and this book does nothing but confuse the reader. After reading the book, I still don't have a clue on the proper way to frame a lithograph. And this is from a guy who fixes, designs, and builds about anything I ever tried. Disappointing
The title is misleading. This is a book about matting with two paragraphs about framing.I expected to learn how to build frames not how to buy them.

Excellent Source Book
I took the original version of this out of my library.It proved to be a good research source so I decided to buy it.I got the new, updated version which is one of the best sources out there for both beginners and those established collectors.The book is full of large, clear photographs and well written descriptions.The newer version takes the reader through the 1940's and is just great.I would highly recommend this book.

Best book on the subject
I've read all the books that I could on old frames and this one is the best. The photography, the information, the orderly fashion in which it is laid out, etc. It was so helpful that the other frame books now sit on theshelf, barely referred to again.

This is great for beginner collectors like myself.
The book is comprehensive enough so as not to overwhelm the learner, but provides enough detail (of the history of frames and their construction, for example) to inspire and to help direct further investigation. Classic Craftmanship but displayed in black and white.
I found the information in this book very helpful, even inspiring."Making Picture Frames" was a birthday gift a couple of years ago. I find myself referring to it constantly, even today.The topics include making custom wood moldings, wood finishing techniques, and it has about 50 molding profiles for inspiration.His techniques for building up compound frames are interesting and helpful.Perhaps the low point is the chapter on matting. Keep in mind that this book was written way-back-when, and it shows its age. Mr. Banister would have found digital photography very helpful.Not glossy, but very informative.---An easy read. ...
