Picture Framing Made Difficult
This is not a book for the person who wants to save a little money.It is written for the fanatic who wants to know how to do everything. Lacking in details
This book is often lacking in details and does not fully illustrate all concepts.For example, it mentions the paper hinge method for mounting a picture to the mount board.However, it does not provide enough detail for an amateur like myself to implement this technique.The techniques all use very cude handtools, and the author does not even mention the tools a professional might use.I'm sure it is possible to use the information in the book to make quality looking frames, but using these tools, it sure will take a struggle of an effort

Saving Things of Beauty
It struck me as odd that people were tossing these things of craftsmanshipand age simply because they didn't think they couldprofit in a monetarysense.It was the death and destruction of antique frames that has madethem rare. So many died, so so many could live. I am sure marketing was thekey factor in showing the buyer with the bucks the joy and appreciation ofthe vintage frames beauty. And so to Mr. Eli Wilner belong the spoils. Ifound the book enlightening and enriching. Dealers who trade in these waresshould buy numerous copies and send them outto their customers for theholidays.

A must-have if you appreciate American craftsmenship
I purchased a copy of the first edition of Antique American Frames a few years ago because of a keen interest I have in American painting and antiques. The book totally transformed my perspective on frames, and nowwhen I am shopping for antiques or considering the purchase of a painting,I take notice of the frame. Using the knowledge gleaned from this book, Ifancy myself a budding frame aficionado. I was expressing my newfoundpassion to my cousin and ended up giving her my copy. I often take the bookwith me to the store or gallery I am visiting, so I immediately orderd areplacement copy for myself. I was delighted to find that there is acurrently a second edition of the price guide available, complete with thelatest prices. The 2nd edition also contains a wonderful chapter oncollectors, both collectors of paintings in antique frames, and, just theframes themselves. I was particularly struck by the analogy of the periodframe to vase; when you think about it, vases are valued the world overjust by themselves and exhibited empty. You never think about somethingbeing missing. I highly recommend the 2nd edition of Antique AmericanFrames Identification and Price Guide as a must-have for anyone whoappreciates the power and beauty of American craftsmanship and artistry.Like the final sentence in the new chapter says "at last period frameshave come into their own."

Decent Subject Overview, Erroneous Prices, Bad Photos
I bought this book hoping to get some real specific information on buying and selling antique american frames. I enjoyed reading this book because it gave me a bigger picture of how the frame styles developed in America (even though I also felt like Mr. Wilner's chatty tone seemed to talk down to hisaudience). I agree with some of the other reviewers in that this certainlyis an enthusiastic book and creates awareness for people to look at whatsurrounds the picture instead of just looking at the painting. Antiqueframes should certainly be studied and written about and noticed andmatched with the right paintings.Read more

This book seems to provide complete information, though anecdotal, about compo- production and molding. The lack of clear diagrams is adisadvantage, too. The author obviously knows the ins and outs of compo,but could have presented it in clearer fashion - with diagrams, times,temperatures, recipes, and lists, rather than narratives and warnings. Itis hard to find exactly the infomration you need without digging into thetext. Also, an index would have been very helpful.
