Editorial Review

Welcome to fairy land, where a large squiggle of chenille stems is a tree house home or a bird's nest; sculpted yarn makes a sheltering toadstool or a cluster of berries; and friends include pompom owls and caterpillars, and chenille grasshoppers and bees. The fairies themselves are charming humanoids resembling woodland flora and fauna: acorns, berries, flowers, moths, and dragonflies. This is the world of Julie Sharp's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So Adorable
I asked for this book to make things for my Waldorf schooled child or with my Waldorf grade school students if it was simple enough.I think the children over 3rd grade could handle most of the things with help.It is more complicated than I imagined (HAPPILY).I am really tired of making nuthats and the KLUTZ type faries, they are wonderful, but we needed something new! These are not necessarily Waldorf friendly for the purists, but they could certainly be easily adapted to be so!The fairies are terribly adorable. We cannot wait to get started on dragonfly!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of a Kind!
One of a kind. An exquisite conception, a much wanted and needed craft book that involves the whole family. Crosses all social, economic and cultural boundaries in a most fantastical and dreamy way that I have not seen before! I wish the writer all the best, as she's brought so much to us...............awating her next book!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Woodcarving Book
This book inspired me to start carving again. The history in the book as well as the great pictures of works by the masters of this style including Harley Refsal made this not only an interesting read but also an excellent how to guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is it REALLY helpful?
Anyone who wants to try their hand at figure carving...get this book!. It has a few pages giving a background behind this style of carving, but has an EXCELLENT step by step project in the back. I thought I could never do it; all the figures I have seen looked like it took someone years to learn the trade. This may be so but I was able to finish my first figure over about 3-4 days and everyone is astonished at what I have done. Seriously, this book is one of the best Ive seen. Its a "must-have".

5-0 out of 5 stars Follow the steps and you can do it!!
I have long wanted to learn how to carve, and jealously watched a friend develop this talent. He recommended this book to me.A weekend's worth of following the instructions in the book produced three carvings each a little better than the other. This instructive book also mixes the history of Scandinavian Carving along with rich color pictures of completed carvings.Take your wood working to another level. You to can create a masterpiece. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Carving Meanings
Bronner presents the life histories of four carvers from Indiana as resources for understanding woodcarving's appeal. The book is a detailed study of chain carving, and the description is so thick that a reader could actually learn to carve a wooden chain by reading this study of an popular folk art. What makes this book so interesting is the way in which Bronner connects the carvers' biography with woodcarving to ascertain important values within the carvers' lives.Throughout the book, Bronner uses folkore scholarship to provide important insights into ways in which an individual's early life experiences provide a base for creativity during the twilight years. At times, his analysis is speculative, but Bronner's interests are intriguing and provide interesting ways to think about creativity and aging.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding study of a folk art
This book shows the breadth and scope of meanings that are carved into wooden chains by Indiana craftsmen.Folklorist Simon Bronner begins his study with a simple question:Why would anyone spend hours and hours carving out wooden chains? The answers that he finds show that simple questions often have complex answers.Bronner provides a glimpse into the souls of the carvers as he reveals the significant aspects of the aesthetic and emotional dimensions of life history that are crafted into the art of the carvers. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Realistic???
I found the book sadly filled with useless pages filled with photos of people (8 pages) and even more of nothing most people would ever think of carving(12 pages) that's 20 out of 63 pages wasted. Carving REALISTIC Faces.... is anything but. I find all of the carvings to be more alien than realistic. Does offer little help in the layout of a head and facial features. If your good enough to attempt carving a face you are way beyond this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book if you've carved a duck before.
This book is a good book only if you've carved a duck before because it does not tell you what kind of knife to use, also it does not tell you to draw the basic front and back of the duck on the botton as guide lines. If you want to start carving buy the book "How to carve wood". It tells you how to carve a antique duck very clear. It also tells you what tools you need, and even how to sharpen them. After you purchase the book how to carve wood, then buy this book carving miniature duck decoys for patterns, and better techniues. Even though carving minauture duck decoys has good techniques it does not explain basic info. Buy the standard B bo-t handcrafted knife from woodcraft.com that is the best knife for basic carving. I hope this review helped.

4-0 out of 5 stars Carving Miniature Duck Decoys
The book is a large sized book primarily designed to give minimal instructions for carving decoys of common ducks. This is NOT a "how to whittle" book by any means. The writer assumes that you know how touse a carving knife already. The pages are of rather heavy paper that canbe cut out or the staples removed so that you can use them to make your ownpatterns to carve the birds.Which is fairly standard for many books ofthis type. I used a photocopyer to copy the patterns so that I did notdestroy the book ( I have a phobia about destroying books! Too manyreadings of Ferenheit 451 as a child I guess) I started by carving aMallard and a wood duck. The Mallard took only a few hours of whittlingwith my X-Acto to get to reasonable completion level. The scale is aboutright for hand sized carving.A pocket knife or X-acto is perfect. The only place the book "fails" for me is in the design of thecoloration of the birds.I know little about wild birds and would likesome bettter guidance in this respect, though he has included two paces ofcolor plates of completed carvings and suggests that the reader researchthe birds in other books. Not a bad idea at that. If you are interestedin carving, this is a pretty good way to start in with miniature decoys. For the more mercinary of you, in my travels last week, I saw a slightlylarger decoy in a store priced at $125.Where's my carving knife? ... Read more

Editorial Review

Chip carving normally begins with an already finished object such as a wooden plate or a box, and incorporates carved-in geometric or free-form designs to create an individual work of art and craft. Barton introduces the reader to some of the most well-known carvers, both professional and those who simply pursue the craft out of love. Designs shown in 128 pages of full-color pictures and explanatory text include a basswood lamp base, elaborate box lids, plates, wooden trunks, wall plaques, clocks, and many everyday objects made extraordinary by the carving of well-known professionals and hobbyists--such things as hangers, a breadboard, and a wastebasket. The tools and techniques are explained early on for the uninitiated, and the finished works of the expert carvers are pictured to show readers some of the extraordinary possibilities of learning chip carving for themselves. 5-0 out of 5 stars Harley Refsal's Latest
This book is a revision of the 1992 classic by Harley Refsal. The new book is a larger format with a lot more color. My previous copy had been getting pretty dog-eared so the new one came along just in time. For those of you who may not be familiar with Harley's previous work, his is the foremost publication that describes the history and methods of "Scandinavian Flat Plane Carving".In my opinion, Scandinavia is the origin of the genre that we all love and call caricature carving.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easily the Best Carving Book Available
Harley's new book builds on his previous book on Scandinavian woodcarving, but he adds much more both in the area of carving and the history of carving. There is the old familiar Oskar but there is also a Scandinavian horse. There is additional information in the history area, a section on painting, as well as an expanded section on patterns. The photography is in color and quite detailed. If you are a wood carver, this book will be a wonderful addition to your woodcarving library.
