You Won't Learn Much With This Book
What this author is doing is hastily slapping together these books on carving that are little more than partial portfolios of his own work.There is no explanation of HOW to do the projects you are seeing.The book shows you a series of photos and rather than explaining how it's done it will say, "Next I carved..." and on to the next photo.Not very helpful.I'm sure it's helpful to the author because he has a dozen of these worthless books in print for roughly $12 to $22 bucks a pop.Not a bad racket.But I would advise people actually trying to learn how to carve to look elsewhere.A book that has some actual substance is the "Manual of Traditional Woodcarving".It's a reprint of an old book.Also Nora Hall has a great series of videos as well as a good website.There are others.Don't waste your money on these worthless Ian Norbury books.

Norbury has a carving system that actually works!
My husband is a woodcarver and is pretty darn good at it, with one exception --the human face. He carved a clown, an indian and a man's head, a Roman and Don Quixote and he was not satisified with any of those faces. Then he got his hands on this book. When he finished the bust of the female, I was startled to see just how good a carving it was. Now I'm afraid that he's decided that his problem was that he had not carved women's heads. He's looking around for a camera and a model to photograph from a multitude of angles, just like Norbury showed him how to do in this book. I'm just not too sure how far I want him to go with this new found talent....

Top of the line book
This is the best book I've seen about carving the female bust.Norbury works from photographs and goes into great detail about using photos to make the pattern for the bust of choice.

a needed book for your stamp carving arsenal
If you are interested in learning how to carve your own art rubber stamps then you need this book as well as Art Stamping Workshop. Both books provide clear cut instructions on how to carve your own stamps to make artistic and fun stamps that are one of a kind. Well worth the 10 bucks here on Amazon! I recommend it.
Rubber Stamp Carving
This book clearly details the ins and outs of carving your own rubber stamps, for those whose creative instincts urge them to follow their own path in the world of stamping. With clear, non-technical language, the author shows in words and pictures how even the simplest and most modest of tools can create lively stamped images which can stand on their own or be incorporated into larger and more complex works. Great for teaching children
I recently purchased this book and have found it to be a terrific resource for teaching children how to make beautiful books.The instructions and diagrams are easy to follow and very clear. My favourite is the T.V. book. The children in my class had a blast making these books.

An excellent guide for what to look for in a gemstone, how to identify a gemstone, and lots of info on the listed gemstones throughout the book.

excellent resource
Loads of information, nicely illustrated. More info on origin,judging clarity / transparency / quality and more on pricing than Smithsonian Gemstones, naturally, cause its called "buying guide". Althugh I am not a hound, and cannot afford to buy the stones, I am very happy to have bought the book.

great introduction to gemstones
This is a great introduction for the beginner.Lots of color photographs of both cut gemstones and finished jewelry make this a beautiful book.The author goes over shape and cutting style, carat, color, clarity, cut quality and treatments.She also explains the difference between synthetic and natural stones.The last part of the book has entries for various gemstones with detailed descriptions of the qualities of each.Again with lots of photos.After reading this I do feel comfortable comparing stones and prices. ... Janney Engraaving Guide
I ordered two books on this subject at the same time.This book was clear and to the point--and very helpful.The other "Custom Gunstock Carving" was a big disappointment.

The results achieved on my first attempt were very satisfying. I was surprised on receiving the book that most of the work is done thru a pattern with rotary tools. This book has very detailed instructions accompanied by step-by-step photographs.It teaches you how to carve several different things (spoons, forks, knives, stick figures, flowers, and walking sticks among them) from twigs.

Great starting place!
I first encountered this book in the library and checked it out so many times that I finally gave in and bought my own copy. I've made gifts using the instructions and patterns in this book, and found that the guidelines and levels of difficulty ratings are dead accurate. I've used this book as a springboard to go further into this craft. Neat little book, aroused my interest in a new to me craft

Carving Landscapes
If you are into carving landscapes then you will learn a good deal about carving techniques.Learn how to carve various materials used in structures you are trying to represent.Lora Irish is one of my favorite designers and I feel this book is worth its cost.I cannot over emphasize the need for quality carving tools and proper procedures for keeping them sharp.

What you see is not quite what you get
I initially chose this book because of it's very nice illustrations.My mistake was in buying this as my first relief book.I assumed that the step-by-step instructions for the sample project, Mountain View Farm, would be geared towards beginners since it was, after all, broken into steps with corresponding photos.Not quite. Neither fish nor fowl
While I am a great fan of L.S. Irish as an artist, her newest book falls far short of being of the same caliber as her art.If it is intended for novices, it lack sufficient detail.If it is for intermediate or advanced carvers, it wastes far too many pages on the basics.It has 32 nice patterns which are mostly variations on the theme of old barns in the woods.One of the projects in the book can be downloaded from her website FREE. Last of all, many of the photos are in color. However, it looks as if the photographer used daylight film under incandescent lights because all of the photos are yellow-red.This makes it impossible to appreciate the sections on painting the carvings.All in all, I cannot recommend this book. ... Not Impressed
I was not impressed with this book in the least. Maybe it was because I had just finished reading Chris Pye's book Wood Carving Tools Marerial & Equipment. Now this book is about another form of carving but it is many times superior in handling its topic. The best place to start.
I learned to chip carve from reading this book.The patterns and work shown are somewhat simple and are easilyattainable. Barton's descriptions and explainations are clear and if you follow what he does, itinspires enough confidence to continue.

An inspirational and beautiful book on segmented woodturning
If you are interested in segmented woodturning it is pretty hard to go past this book.It was written on behalf Ray Allen by long time friend Dale Nish, and it's a sad fact to learn that Ray didn't live to see his book published.Ray should feel very proud wherever he is for this work, a full colour book all the way through with clear diagrams and pictures to assist you with that segmented woodturning challenge.
Pretty good, Great Photos and Designs.
This book is worthwhile if you are learning about how to do segmented turning or if the designs interest you.The instructions are clear but brief and show one master's methods.
An expert among the esperts
I have scanned the book again and again. It is hard to leave an object for the next one, the art work is so perfect.

Great!Clever popsicle stick carving tools!
This book is a gem in the rough.It is not slick or up-to-date looking, but it contains excellent instructions on carving soap as a prelude to carving wood.The author, an engineer, shows you how to create carving tools out of popsicle sticks.This is the one of the coolest craft ideas I have ever seen and it worked very well with a group of children from my church.Not only does he describe how to make a basic carving tool (by cutting a diagonal and then sharpening the "blade" on sandpaper) but he shows how to make a gouge and other tools too.
