5-0 out of 5 stars Very worthwhile addition
This is a very worthwhile addition to a woodcarvers' library. I have not read or worked through the entire book yet (it is truly enormous, and I already have most of the skills so it is re-capping them for me) but it is worth 5 stars for the pictures alone - many, many examples of carved furniture through history. Books with that many photos of historical pieces are hard to come by and usually very, very expensive. So for that alone it is worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous overview of the field
I'm very happy to have this book, to show people who come to see my carvings, to inspire me, and to reinforce the idea that there are as many approaches to carving as there are carvers, and only a few of them involve bears.
5-0 out of 5 stars From a Collector of Chainsaw Art
I am a collector of chainsaw art.My first purchase was back in 1986.I feel I can't have enough carvings.I even own a few pieces by a couple people featured in this book.Knowing some of their story makes it even more meaningful. I enjoyed the book and have it on our coffee table for others to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN THE ART OF CHAINSAW CARVING!!!
I read this book cover to cover and in my opinion, no other chainsaw carving book allows the reader to feel as though they know the carvers the way that this book does!Jessie does a GREAT job at having the reader identify with the top carvers of our time!I've personally been carving for about two years and through reading about all of the various artists journeys, it has helped me to realize that someday, if I continue to work hard, I could actually meet some of these wonderful people!Jessie has made it clear that if you work hard and believe in your art, that a dream can become a reality! Thanks Jessie!Steve Rager... ... I was disapointed with the book when it arrived.Looked much better on line.I found the carvings and patterns very rough and two dimensional.

4-0 out of 5 stars carving for the beginner

5-0 out of 5 stars Quiet, Reverent, Stunning
The photos are simply amazing. Some of the most beautiful funerary monuments from around the world ( Prague, SPain, France) The book juxtaposes the human emotion of death and concepts of eternity, grief, with these rigid and unchanging works of art. The text briefly touches on the cultural differences of the european vs. american treatment of death. One exceptionally magnificent statue, a weeping angel, kneeling down, head bowed over his/her crossed arms, took my breath away. The text is quiet and sparse, the pictures of the european gothic headstones are fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars The beauty of eternity
Dean Koontz did a beautiful job with this book of photographs of cemeteries, writing words that whisper softly into the ear and which match the photos perfectly. This is a lovely book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sound of the Cemetary
To appreciate this is book of art you have to be able to look past all preconceived ideas of cemetaries and dying and look further into a higher realm of spirituality. The monuments featured in this book speak of something other than death - they speak of the person that lives on and the people that are left behind to remember them.Looking through the pages I felt a connection to another world that was very much alive. When you look at each picture you can feel the emotion. The monuments whisper to you from beneath the vines and the algae that threaten to keep their secrets forever.Looking at all of this one must wonder why so many feel the need to express their grief in such a manner? When I look at the pictures, the beautiful aged monuments tell a story of their own and possess their own mortality, especially the ones that mimic our image.Seeing their bodies covered in snow or their faces that have aged like our mortal ones instill a sense of fragility among the living and the dead alike. There is no escaping the inevitable and if you could just look past the marble and granite you would see the souls that are trying to tell you their story. After I read this book I longed to see Pere-Lachaise in Paris.I finally got the opportunity five months ago. Being there was the most surreal experience I have ever had.I found many of the monuments shown and I have to say David Robinson's photography speaks to us in a way that no spoken language can. Pere-Lachaise is over 105 acres of remarkable ethereal beauty. Cemetaries are usually thought of as the land of the dead but this book will show you how alive death can be.After you view this book you will not only see beauty, you will feel it. And if you are one of the lucky ones you will realize that cemetaries are alive and if you listen closely, you will feel what they have to say. ... Read more

I would have to say that this book is a good tool for the beggining sculptor. The book is informative as well as easy to follow. Most of the questions and doubts that I had were answered as I read from project toproject. The book is not too overwhelming but rather simple and to thepoint. The book starts with a good section on selecting and caring fortools. Then briskly moves on to the wood needed and follows through to theprojects in the book.Overall, I was pleased with the information gainedfrom this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful book for ideas and patterns for bird carving.
Written by Roger Schroeder, this book is a summary of Ernest Muehlmatt's carving techniques that takes the reader through the steps of carving song birds using a power carver. Mr. Schroeder's writting style is difficult toget used to. He uses many un-necessary adjectives to describe the processof carving. Much of the first part of the book is devoted to reviewing Mr.Muehlmatt's personal opinions in bird carving. The reader gets a sense thatMr. Muehlmatt is quite egotistical. Nonetheless, the book does go over afew techniques useful to aquire for both carving and painting birds.Although geared toward people who use power carving tools, much of theinformation can be used for those who utilize knives and gouges. The secondpart of the book includes patterns of some common song birds and apictorograph showing how each one was carved and painted. This turns out tobe the most useful part of the book. Overall, readers will gain someknowledge of song bird carving and painting and a lot of insight into thethought process of Ernest Muehlmatt, albeit at the expense of siftingthrough the cumbersome writing sytle of Roger Schroeder. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A formerly frustrated carver

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book Won't Teach You How To Carve
What this author is doing is hastily slapping together these books on carving that are little more than partial portfolios of his own work. They're usually only less than 90 pages or less with very little writing in them. There is no explanation of HOW to do the projects you are seeing. The book shows you a series of photos and rather than explaining how it's done it will say, "Next I carved..." and on to the next photo. Not very helpful.I'm sure it's helpful to the author because he has a dozen of these worthless books in print for roughly $12 to $22 bucks a pop.Not a bad racket. But I would advise people actually trying to learn how to carve to look elsewhere.A book that has some actual substance is the "Manual of Traditional Woodcarving".It's a reprint of an old book. Also Nora Hall has a great series of videos as well as a good website. There are others.Don't waste your money on these worthless Ian Norbury books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I sculpt the figure mainly in clay, but I have been thinking about trying woodcarving, so I bought this book to get a look at what was possible in wood.It is a very good presentation of how to create a figure in a carved medium.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely the second book to own.
Some of what is in this book is also in the first book.Technically this book could stand on its own and that's why the repitition. However, this book is more pattern oriented than the first book.It has two moretypefaces that can be photocopied and used for lettering projects and morepatterns that are somewhat more advanced than the first book. Thebiggest help for a beginning chip carver is to acquirle a collection ofpatterns and typefaces to use for any carving projects. This could beused as a starting point for anyone interested in chip carving, but therosettes and the lettering patterns in the first book are invaluable aswell.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I am new to paper cutting but I am a scrapbooker/card maker. This book opened up a whole new world to me!
4-0 out of 5 stars Yes, but.....
I mostly agree with the other reviewer said...BUT...I did see that Alison "Highly recommended..." this book in her newest (2007-2008) catalog, so I took a chance.(With a MUCH lower price here.)Ideas are GREAT, techniques are fair, patterns are fuzzy and not actual size.I'm an advanced cutter & I WILL use this book....but it will take some simple doctoring, to make them look as clean and sharp as the pictures in the book. After looking through the book (AND not remembering what I'd paid), I told myself it was worth a MAXIMUM of $15.00, for idea & pattern value.I paid less than that, so I'm satisfied.I give it a 4 and know that a beginner could benefit with the good ideas & simple patterns.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tips and techniques are sketchy at best
This book has some attractive patterns, so, if you're just looking for patterns to blindly copy, it is probably fine.Unfortunately, however, it bills itself as offering tips and techniques -- which are very sketchy at best -- and the Resources don't even include Papercuttings By Alison, which is where 99% of US papercutters purchase their supplies. You would HAVE to own at least one other papercutting book to be able to use this -- which is a darned shame, since it would have been very simple for the author to mention the basic things every papercutter knows about using paper, scissors, knives, etc.If you're going to NAME your book Techniques, you really ought to include as much information as possible.Conversely, if she'd named her book Patterns, it would have been fine.I just wouldn't want anyone to think that this is a standalone book on the subject ...
