Very very good
This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it. It is quite large, very thorough, is loaded with colour photos (every second page?) and as well, colour diagrams. It covers everything (that I can think of) with almost step-by-step instructions and many examples from both real life (pictures of buildings, doorways, windows) and the workshop (finished items on the table). I find the colour photos very useful, as they give a good indication of the kind of beauty you can aim for, and the photos of work in progress also very useful. I don't think black and white photos are as good for this kind of book, so I was very happy to see so much vivid colour.

This is one of a kind
Dr. Jeff Paxton's book is truly one of a kind. I purchased my copy about 3 months ago and began cutting out the patterns immediately. I have been looking for a book like this since I began scrolling. These framed, "Words of Faith" was my Christmas gift for over 30 of my closest friends. I have received more positive feedback about them in 3 weeks than any of my previous work in 3 years. My scroll saw experience is limited, but I believe a beginner can cut these out. Dr. Paxton has included very detailed patterns and some excellent tips on things like wood choice, stack cutting and etc. This book has taken my scroll saw work to a new level of recognition and accomplishment, but yet they are so simple to cut out. The inspiration from this book has lead me to develop some of my own patterns. Well, I don't know what else to say except, if you're a scroll saw enthusiast and don't buy this book call; "Words of Faith in Wood" you are missing out on a tremendous blessing.Many blessings to come. Great book on origami
Of the many Oriental art forms that have entered Western culture, few is more accessible and enjoyable as origami.Known primarily thru the paper crane, this Japanese art form is actually quite complex and capable of producing a wide variety of objects from paper.This book by Isao Honda showcases many of these objects such as birds, insects, mammals, vehicles, etc... along with the instructions on how to make them.
Almost perfect...
In the 1970s, my grandfather used to send origami books home from Japan. The prize was the big hardcover by Isao Honda.
Getting started in Origami? This book is a good start
I give it 4 out of 5 stars, because when I learned origami, I had the unabridged book and liked it a bit better (or else I am just being nostalgic.)My grandfather taught me as a child to do origami. He could make a fantastic toy concertina that you could "play." This book has a lot of fun animals, using the two paper technique. I like that, because you can learn units that are similar and get an origami portfolio fairly fast. The selection of interesting boxes is fun, too.Read more

Definitely the first book you should buy on ice carving.
This book covers all the basics of modern ice sculpture and is leagues ahead of the more popular American beginning books.While it is still slightly behind on modern tool usage, it does cover basic sculpture theory that is not in other books.This book does not cover "snow blown" logo technique which is a major omission in my opinion.Also, the carvings are created for Japanese ice blocks that are a different size than the standard block here in the states.But, it is a beautiful book that offers much. ... Biology class
This book was way more technical than I though it would be. I'm glad I have a background in Biology, or a lot of this would not have made sense. It is filled with a ton of information and will go beyond the basics for most people.

Good general wood seasoning book
This book (which is British) does a good job explaining the basics of drying wood. While it is written for English woodworkers, the tables list common American woods too. I myself have some oak logs to saw up, and I am pleased with their ideas and plan to use many. ... Read more

truly excellent
Absolutely magnificent ... extremely helpful. I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone who wants to learn woodcarving (and I have many books on the subject), it is a shame it is out of print but chase it up on zshops or marketplace, it is worth it. Well written, enjoyable and useful.

Hndcrafting Bamboo Fly Rods: Not for everyone
This is a good reference book, but should not be your sole source of information. Too much is left out that is critical to building a first rod. For example, a lot of details are missing with regards to what you need to do with the blank once it comes out of the glue binder. WHat about scraping, filing, sanding and keeping those sharp edges? The book could also do with better organization.

Great ideas, great technique info
I really enjoyed this book, particularly for the ideas. There are so many different "personalities" of pumpkin faces represented, in addition to some abstract ones. I "freelance" my pumpkins and it was really helpful to see the specific cuts to create a particular effect. The patterns/templates coupled with the full-color images (with candles glowing inside) really helped me understand how to use relief more effectively to create the look I want. Halloween fun
Palmer is a high school art teacher and he uses that experience to teach people how to carve some spectacular pumpkins in this book. Each of the pumpkin designs has a template you can cut out to use for the actual pumpkin carving, which makes it very easy to do, since you don't need a lot of artistic or pumpkin-carving talent to make it work. He also includes technical details on the procedures, such as the necessity of occasionally using a drill to get the smaller, more precise holes and cut- outs.Read more

An Outstanding Introduction to Carving Folk Art
I have purchased many carving books that deal with caricature and folk art, and this one by Shawn Cipa has become my all-time favorite.Shawn has a background in art, and this shows in his approach. Rather than taking the reader through a rigid set of guidelines to produce a carving that is *exactly* like the one he has done, he instead encourages individual creativity.The book includes some pages that show possible variations on his patterns to get the reader in a creative frame of mind.
