5-0 out of 5 stars Best in Class
Common sense innovation, a sense of humor and a 'can do' attitude are the ingredients in creating the masterful works of art by Mike Burton. He writes in a way that sounds like he's talking to a friend.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, insightful, innovative techniques
What a great book! The clear, concise explanations guide me step by step and I don't need to be a master craftsman or artist to turn my projects from stictly plain-practical to exciting and beautiful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but little information
I red the 2000 edition. The book is somehow shallow. It's easy to read and provides some basic info, but that is too little too late for the average pipe aficionado in the internet era and also, doesn't explain the title.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best source, so far!
I have a number of pipe books and this is by far the best I have read.It has info on how each company prepares the briar as well as how they make their pipes. If I were to have to keep but one pipe book, this is the one I would choose!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic for ANYONE interested in papercutting
Although I have almost every papercutting/scherenschnitte written in English, this is probably my all-time favorite -- and I'm not even Jewish.Jewish papercutting is breathtakingly beautiful (and truly in a class by itself; check the internet and/or museums for spectacular samples), so those tips/ techniques are obviously invaluable. However, the author also includes a great deal of incredibly helpful information that would enhance any style of papercutting -- and which, strangely enough, I have not seen covered in any of my other books.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I loved this book. I take papper cutting at my hebrew school in Brentwood CA, where Amy Goldenberg is my teacher. She is a fabulous teacher and I have been taking this class for three years and I love it. Amy comes upwith fun and original designs that are displayed in this book. Papercutting is a fun art subject and this book allows you to explore it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the craft and its uses
The summary of the history of papercutting is brief but thorough. The directions for starting out on your own are simple and encouraging. Finally, the designs for those who need inspiration are full of traditional images in a contemporary style and lend themselves to lots of personal touches. This book inspired me to tackle what appeared to be a very daunting art form ... This is a much better beginners guide to all things scrimshaw. They covers the tools and what you can use as material for the craft. the whole range is covered including beef bone,( I find nice bleached ones at the local pet big box stores) tagua nuts, polymer ivory, shells and billiard balls.Even the modern ones made of plastic are hard to tell when done corectly.Old ivory piano keys the heads and tail pieces. (Check with your local piano repair man)and of course horns and antlers. Using power equipment on the antlers use a proper dust mask. If you use antlers you may find some at the local new age ect fairs or flea market.Or pen maker suppliers have an asssortment of materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best beginner and refresher publication printed ever.
I'd give Pams book 6 stars but the selection box wouldn't let me. Pam's book is an excellent step by step, add on, and expand upon set of exercises. She goes into detail on explaining how to with everything, from layout, how to draw all of the designs in her book; how to hold your knife in the basic positions and each lesson builds upon the last. Every progression is done step by step. She is outstanding in holding your hand and guiding you through all of the steps of the exercises. Wayne Barton's books are excellent. Unfortunately, you have to have some basic knowledge on design and technique and carving expertise. For experienced chip carvers his books are really great source books. His video is excellent for seeing chip carving technique at it's very best. Worth the purchase. Most important of all is using razor sharp knives else you'll be very frustrated and disappointed in the results. Get Wayne Barton's ceramic stones and a good leather strop with some rouge to rub on. Your blade will have a mirror finish.I glued some old pieces of leather to both sides of a 10 inch by 2 inch wide by 1/4 inch thick piece of wood. One side for rouging, the other to polish. When I've layed off for quite a while, I always pick up Pam's book to get my hands and fingers in shape and go through the basics. At 75, my fingers tend to stiffen up a bit. She got me my first blue ribbon at a craft show for my chip carving designed tool box back in 1993. Pam is not very good with computers but she is in a class by herself when she designed this truly outstanding do it yourself chip carving text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for beginners
I am a newbie to chip carving - and have purchased 2 Wayne Barton books to get started. They had great pictures as inspiration - but do nothing for the beginner who has no technique to make these sophisticated cuts.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely magnificent
I cannot give this book enough stars, and it is worth 5 times the price they are asking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource for rainy days and other homebound occasions
Grandma's Magic Scissors: Paper Cut-ting From A-Z by Linda S. Day (a.k.a. Grandma) is a fun and creative instructional compendium of do-it-yourself projects for creating intricate, beautiful pieces of art with just a sheet of paper, a pencil, and a pair of scissors. Providing young (and not so young!) readers with a "user friendly" introduction to the inexpensive, fun and artistic pastime of fancy paper cutting, Grandma's Magic Scissors carefully guides the reader through cutting out such designs as The Monkeys and the Crocodile; Praying Parents; and Little Red Hen and Chicks, to Mice; Three Billy Goats Gruff; and Hearts with Bunnies. A wonderful resource for rainy days and other homebound occasions (with a bit of judicious adult supervision), Grandma's Magic Scissors is very strongly recommended for all children, but most especially those with an artistic interest searching for an entertaining and creatively inspiring guide through the decorative art of paper cutting and design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plain Speaking
The words of Ed Fowler are a welcome change from the ususal gobbledegook that is heard today. I would enjoy reading Ed's observations even if I weren't a knife collector. Part two of Mr. Fowlers life quest is a continuation of the first edition and there's nothing wrong with that. It's refreshing to have a craftsman divulge the discoveries that has resulted in what I think is the perfect working knife.

2-0 out of 5 stars For Knifemakers Only
If you are a knifemaker, then you may appreciate this book.If you're a fan of Ed Fowler, you may appreciate this compilation of previous articles for a magazine. As a person interested in knives, I was more interested in learning about different materials, hardness scales, knife functions, styles of knives, and the like. This book does not address those issues.I don't care to learn how to skin a rattlesnake, buy dying sheep for their horns, and I'm not interested in Ed Fowler's dating and subsequent marriage.I didn't expect to get story (with no instructions) about knife sharpening. All in all, the book was very disappointing.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Knifemaker Icon
Mr Fowler would cringe at that description, I'm sure. A down to earth man and great wit. Fowler is very much admired by knife users and makers alike. This IS a very entertaining book. Just be aware that knifemaking demands a lot of time, often alot of equipment, and inate skill on the maker's part. This book won't make you a knifemaker. It may inspire you to want to be one though. Compared to the other books in this price range and size, it has alot of information and fairly good illustrations. It does show you that a man's personality is very important to the quality of his craft. ... Read more
