5-0 out of 5 stars An essential reference for paperfolding enthusiasts
The art of paperfolding has been one of my interests for many years and one I enjoy sharing with my students. This book is a great reference, first of all because the illustrations are very clear and easy to follow. The projects range from simple to somewhat advanced, but none are too difficult to make once you understand the basic folds. My students are always particularly fascinated by the figures that "do things" such as the "Chinese Balloon," which you can blow up and toss around, the "Bird with Flapping Wings," which really seems to fly, and the "Snapping Alligator," which, well, you guessed it. Other paperfolds from this book that never cease to amuse children as well as adults are the "Money Fold Bow Tie," and "Jumping Frog." If you are not sufficiently amazed with your finished paperfold as it is, the author gives additional options and uses for each. Paperfolding is beautiful, magical and tons of fun. This book is a must have if you enjoy the art as much as I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars useful for beginners
Very useful book, especially for beginners. Unlike some of the Japanese origami books, this assumes no prior cultural knowledge, so you can knock off some easy projects quickly, and do some quite complicated ones later. Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun & Easy to learn
This book is amazing! It has many interesting projects to do. Unlike other origami books, this book teaches you easy methods of folding. It doesn't take long for you to become a master at origami and you'll have fun too.Invest in this book soon and you won't regret it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best beginner book and I've seen a lot.
Twelve years ago, I bought this book.I have since bought at least 15-20 different origami books.Hideaki Sakata's is the best book for beginners by far.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just did them all
I have to say, this is probably the best book on the market for the beginner. It takes the reader from the most simple instructions to the more elaborate designs within a slim 66 pages of brightly colored and very clear photos. The folds are never in doubt, as they can be in books that depend more heavily on line drawings and simple sketches alone.Considering its very reasonable price, it's a steal. The models cover a wide range of objects:flowers, fish, birds, animals, furniture, architecture, boxes, and ornaments.
5-0 out of 5 stars Top Beginners Origami Book
I personally found this one of the best beginner's origami book.It does not skimp on the "origami portion of designs" using square paper for all the designs and maybe scissors for two diagrams. The instructions are very clear and they are great for any beginner for learning how to make diagrams and interpret the directions for other diagrams. Most of the models are traditional but all in all, in my opinion, it is the best book for beginners. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A childhood door to Wonder
My dad had this book at home and since we were living on the top floor I had endless opportunities to experiment and litter the neighbourhood with planes made from this book's design. An evergreen favourite is Sakoda's Origami Supersonic Jet.5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspirational Book
In a world of hi-technology, electronics, computers and robotics, it's amazing such a book is still in print. This book has been a great inspiration for me through the years as it has thought me alot, not only about folding paper airplanes. It teaches us all that though we may havesuper-computers today, it's the creativity that matters afterall, becausethe best idea could possibly be the simplest.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fish Carver's Look at Bob Berry's Book
This is the second edition of a very good primer on fish carving by one of the world's best fish carvers. All of the necessary techniques to produce a convincingly life-like fish carving are illustrated. The paint schedules are easy to follow and the addition of the colour section on step by step trout painting is excellent. The book contains a number of projects that build on each other. It is profusely illustrated and the instructions are easy to follow.3-0 out of 5 stars An Introduction that is not for beginners.
I found Bob Berry's book informative, however, it assumes that the reader has had some experience or previous knowledge of carving and painting techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to carve
I am a beginner and I found this book fun. Each year I carve a different one for my daughters. They are just the right size for a shelf or to hang on the tree. I found it very easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best approach to Santa carving I have ever seen!
I have been carving Santas for some time now and have seen most books on the subject.I am really impressed with the unique technique employed in the book. This is great for beginners because it lays out a methodical approach to carving.Best of all, you don't need a bandsaw to make a cutout....just a block of wood and a few basic carving knives. This book is excellent because it uses plenty of photographs to teach--you could learn just by looking at the pictures.I enjoy this book because it made me realize how rewarding it is to start with a block of wood and a knife and end up with a great carving rather than cut out a rough shape with the bandsaw and then carve. This is the book to buy if you want to learn to carve or learn a more efficient carving method.Pay no attention to the few who rate it low.I can't fathom how they can rate it low......they need to realize that this is an art and it takes patience and focus to learn. They must have been carving with the wrong end of the knife.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for beginning and intermediate Santa carvers.
This is an excellent book and I am thoroughly enjoying each of the projects.Usually carving books don't give good painting details, but this one does. Also, most of the books I have used in the past tend to have all the projects look much the same.I'm amazed at the individuality of each of the 15 projects.Read more

When learning to carve decoys, the difficulty in acheiving a satisfactory result seems to lie in the form and character of the template. Often the materials and methods seem to get a healthy share of attention, leaving theactual figure of the duck up in the air so to speak. Read more
