5-0 out of 5 stars Very appealing designs and clear directions
I just finished knitting the "Sensational Shirttail" from this book, a v-neck aran cardigan. The design appears complicated and is rated intermediate, but it was truly easy to follow the very clear instructions. Everyone who has seen it loves it and is astonished that I, a novice knitter, actually did it all myself, and in less than three weeks! I am ready to begin others sweaters from this book, just trying to decide what colors and types of yarn to use. Oh, another great thing about this book is that it gives you the yarn weight used in the original pattern and the yardage, as well as the needle sizes, so you can adapt to your choice of fiber. I knitted my sweater in a chunky weight cotton, and I couldn't be happier with it. There are so many other beautiful patterns in this book, I'm sure it will appeal to just about every knitter.

2-0 out of 5 stars I thought Aran was a product of the AGES, not the 80's...
I recently bought an armload of the prettiest fuschia pink Debblie Bliss silk aran yarn, and had been waiting by my mailbox with much anticipation for my new aran pattern treasury to arrive to put my sassy pink yarn to good use.Alas, what was advertised and what arrived were two different things: for starters, none of the patterns in this book look the slightest bit "aran."
5-0 out of 5 stars At last, a collection from the back issues of Knitters
These patterns were so popular that back issues of "Knitters Magazine" were going for quite high sums on Ebay. Now, after a lot of begging on the part of knitters around the world, Knitters Magazine and XRX Press have collected patterns by type from those hot issues and released them in book form. THANK YOU! Now I don't have to sift through back issues or beg copies of friends to find certain patterns I like.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
To a knitter, this book has lots of humor. The humor is mixed with author truths and quotes from famous people. It's a nice little read that a person can pick up, read, put down five minutes later...then pick up again even later still....and pick up right where they left off, or open the book to a different spot, and still enjoy the book. The Yarn Harlot does it again!

5-0 out of 5 stars It makes you feel good to know.....
What can I say, as a knitter for over 45 years........I am not alone. My experiences as a knitter that I felt were unique to me were not. Knowing/reading that they have beenexperiencesd by others is a good feeling. It's a great read and it was worth giving up some knitting time.A must read for all knitters.

4-0 out of 5 stars please, how did you know
the book was passed around at a spinners/knitters retreat and everyone could identify with the sentiment. how we all could see ourselves......in so many of the writings ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book on shawls !!
Loved this book !!I've read it cover to cover a few times now, and like it more and more each time.Great photos of every project. Some history on specific shawls, which I appreciate.Lots of different folks' designs, which is nice.I'm an intermediate knitter but new to lace.About to start my first shawl, wish me luck !

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection
This book contains a gorgeous varity of shawls, of all shapes (square, rectangular, triangular, faroese, and scarf length and width). The lace stitching varies too, from intermediate to advanced, and recommended yarns are lace through medium weight, depending on the project. Most are designed to be all one color, but a couple in the back use mutiple colors - very interesting and beautiful look. I am knitting my first project now, chosen because I already had the appropriate yarn- DK weight lightly brushed alpaca in a heathered purply-mauve color - that I am using to recreate the "featherweight fantasy", a rectangular shawl with fringe and a diamond-like lace pattern. It is so beautiful, I will miss it when I give it away as a gift this Christmas. Happy knitting to you~
5-0 out of 5 stars Get Ready to Pull Out Those Stitch Dictionaries!
As expected, this book includes lots of traditional and innovative shawl patterns, however its true value is that it is an instruction book for designing your own shawls.

5-0 out of 5 stars The one book for any art metal/jewelry artist
This edition or any of the other versions of this book is a must have. I have seen this book in one edition or another sold in the most different locations with only one thing in common. That is METAL you can use it no matter what you are doing if its with metal you can use this book. I have a large number of books in my collection and find that I use this one to answer questions and get quick info. I would suggest that you get the pro edition at some point as it comes with a disk with some small programs for a PDA and books on the computer only. I own it in three different editions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Who's the audience?
This book is strange because it goes back and forth between seeming to be for beginners and advanced metal smiths. I think if the author had defined his audience before constructing the book, he may have done a better job. Another problem is that full chapters are crammed onto one page, with illustrations that sometimes do, sometimes don't relate to the text. And the text is so abbreviated that it's hard to get any real information out of it. I wish I could recommend a better book for the the beginner metal smith (which I am), but I have yet to find one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Lark has a series of books presenting well photographed, contemporary fine crafts. This book is a good survey of what is being created in brooches (compared to the bracelet book, which is not at all complete or even a small survey of contemporary work and should have been a gallery brochure). If you are teaching in art history or fine crafts areas, this is an important resource for students, collectors, museums, and libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SOURCE OF InSPiRATION!
Amazing examples of all kind of imaginable brooches. You will startcreating your own.

2-0 out of 5 stars 500 Brooches Review
This book, as all others in this series, is put together very well.But...the brooches are the poorest examples of exemplary contemporary artwork I have seen.In my opinion, 98% of the entries are unprofessional in their initial design and completion. Most are unwearable and impractical as brooches and are the farthest stretch of someone's artistic imagination in regards to fine artwork.Putting it bluntly, the bulk of the "artwok" in this book is rubbish.Embarrassing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great for beginners, just wish there was a little more
I bought this book without looking inside, and while I really like the technical information in the book, I have a little bit of a hesitation about recommending it wholeheartedly.I think for an absolute beginner, this would be a fabulous book.It goes over everything from color design to translating that to garments. There's a short tutorial on stitches, and a gallery of basic patterns that you can customize.
5-0 out of 5 stars VERY COOL book for anyone who knits or crochets!
I was a little skeptical about how good this book would be, but boy was I pleasantly surprised! As someone who is more of a "left-brained" knitter and crocheter, I didn't know if I would ever want to do any of the projects in this book. However, even a left-brainer such as myself can get creative with the patterns and ideas in this book.Just like "Hip to Crochet," this is a book that inspires me to pick up my often-ignored crochet hook, in addition to my well-used knitting needles.I like this book so much that I just bought one for my sister who is even more left-brained than I am!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get started with freeform crochet
I read through most of this book the day I got it because it was that good. There is a section on color theory that helps you choose your yarns, and there are clear instructions on how to put together your "scrumbles" - which are the building blocks for freeform crochet. It is more step-by-step than other books on freeform, which is good for those who need it.The pictures are beautiful and inspiring, too.I'm a long-time crocheter, but I'm new to freeform. This book inspired me to work on my first freeform project - a vest.Crocheters with a desire for more creative expression will love this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition
This book was more along the lines I was looking for in fabric beading. Instructions were clear, pictures beautiful and had lots of detail. I will enjoy using this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full Color Inspiration Book
I finally know what to do with all the "weird" Beads I just had to have for no other reason than they looked different. I love the Picture instructions on beading cabs. I would liked to have seen more of these types of instructions. That is my only complaint. If you can see the patterns in your head the written instructions are clear enough. Her chapter on tools and materials is very good and she even explains the types of threads most books do not cover as well as the glues, scissors, needles, hoops and frames and even includes the newest craze, Fire Line and Power Pro. Chapter 2 is all about beads including my "weird" beads.
5-0 out of 5 stars A little bit of heaven
Having forgotten that I had ordered this book before it was published, I was pleasantly surprised when it came yesterday. Wow, am I glad that I ordered it! It provides great information about beading on various types of fabrics, the different types of beads and tips as well as things to watch out for from the author. I am new to beading and have been wanting to add it to my quilt blocks and hand made clothing for a while. This book has a large number of her completed pieces in full color and provides explanations for the techniques she used on each one. I found this to be a very helpful and inspiring book, and will recommend it to my friends who are wanting to begin beading as well. Great job, Ms. Van Horn. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro, instruction and bookshelf reference

5-0 out of 5 stars Loaded With Ideas & Techniques
As a newcomer to the craft, I liked this author's approach. She explains what an altered book is, gets into choosing a book and developing a theme, then goes step-by-step through the techniques. The basics include collaging, stitching, cutting doors, adding tags, folding pages, and adding inserts. She moves on to intermediate skills: cutting shadowboxes, glazing, adding texture, and various cover treatments. Other ideas include using drawers, adding words and hanging embellishments, working with fiber and beads, transferring images and adding pop-ups.

3-0 out of 5 stars fun to read -- BUT
EZ's breezy style is fun and inspiring, it's a good theory book, but her actual patterns are vague and not so easy to follow. I made one of the hats she described and had to do quite a bit of unraveling and puzzling over her instructions to get it to come out decent. For a more specific guide to knitting sweaters in the round, try Ann Budd's "Book of Sweater Patterns".

4-0 out of 5 stars Knitting freedom
Have you ever felt frustrated by the limitations of commercial knitting patterns that dictate what yarn and gauge you must use? Do you ever find a great pattern, only to see that it isn't written for your size? Have you ever wondered how the heck the knitters of the past managed to make all those pretty sweaters without patterns?
2-0 out of 5 stars NOT basic or easy to follow, contrary to what title says
I started knitting a few months ago and thought this could help me to get beyond scarves.I suppose it would if I were a sewing expert, but alas, I am not.I guess it's good for advanced knitters and designers, but not being born with natural talent for this, I need something more basic before I can comprehend this.If you're a beginner, save your money.I got more out of Stitch-n-Bitch and Leisure Arts pamphlets than I did from this book.Maybe I'll pick it up again in a couple of years. ... Also a great book along with Quilting with Japanese Fabrics which I purchased at the same time. I will get a great deal of pleasure from the many ideas in the book. It's a pity I didnt realise that is was in american dollars and not australian but nevertheless it was a great purchase.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!
This is a beautiful book - even if you don't make the quilts as presented here, they inspire you to bring simplicity and calmness to your quilting designs. The directions are logical and easy to follow and the pictures speak volumes!Give it a try!

3-0 out of 5 stars Get the other one instead
I love Kitty Pippen's first book, Quilting with Japanese Fabrics. This book is nice, but I don't think it covers a lot of new territory. If you can buy both her books, great, but if you can only buy one, I'd recommend the other one over this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-buy for beginners
This book serves as a very good starting guide for beginners. It is so comprehensive that almost all the techniques for surface decoration are covered. It should be unparalleled if further enriched on the glaze part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Guide we've seen so far
My husband and I have been doing pottery for many years and we're always picking up books to get new ideas. This one is the best we've seen in a very long time in regard to variety, unique ideas, and information provided. We highly reccommend it for anyone from beginners to experts.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book includes everything!
this is probably the best & most informative ceramics book i have bought (and i have bought lots!). It gives great detail on every decoration method and even includes some great yet simple glaze recipies! Definitly the book i am most happy with of all the books on ceramics i have. Sure, some of the work used for examples would not be to my taste but the method is there and can be applied to anything you design yourself. On saying that there are also some pictures of really nice pieces, but i guess it covers everyones taste. A highly recommended buy at what i consider a great price for what you get! Enjoy! your 'bible' of surface treatments! ... Read more

The book gave us confidence that we could make glass beads. Production has not started but soon will.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Nature of Glass Beads
This is one of two books that you should own if you are serious about learning to make glass beads. The step by steps are easy to follow. The hot tip boxes are a nice way to point out important info. The pictures are clear and to the point, and follow the descriptions of the action. The gallery pictures are spread thoughtout each section of the type of bead work being explained.

2-0 out of 5 stars Kinda Silly
This book is a fun to read book, yet do not expect to be able to make real items with it.

This is an interesting set of ideas on how to make things with common everyday items; things we would never just think of.Few have an practical applications but they still provide an outlet for imagination and creativity.
