Timeless Reference for Gracious Living
This beautifully photographed book is a feast for the eyes and fodder for the creative person.It is NOT a step by step guide on how to wrap a package (although she does devote a couple of pages on how to wrap a basic box which most people know) or tie a bow (she also shows how to tie a basic bow).IT is full of ideas that one can "lift" and make your own with your own materials.
Been there done that
Nothing new, to me anyway. Pictures were beautiful but to someone who hasn't done it before, the instructions aren't enough.

A classic reference
The photographs in this book provide imaginative ideas for gift wrapping and giving that I will go back to again and again. The quality of the book, the personal notes, list of resources for materials, brief easy how-tos, suggestions for materials, and creating computer-generated wrapping paper, are all appealing facets of this gorgeous book.

Claudine rocks
New techinques that will make the old hat at collage sit up and take notice but the instructions are so easy to follow that a beginner can learn them adn wow her friends and family.The book is so encouraging and inspiring everyone needs it in their art library

So much more than Iexpected!
New Directions is fabuous, so much more than eye candy, Gabe's book stirs up all kinds of new ideas! This is one that isn't even hitting the bookshelf, it'll be right next to the work table.

Great intro, instruction and bookshelf reference

Loaded With Ideas & Techniques
As a newcomer to the craft, I liked this author's approach. She explains what an altered book is, gets into choosing a book and developing a theme, then goes step-by-step through the techniques. The basics include collaging, stitching, cutting doors, adding tags, folding pages, and adding inserts. She moves on to intermediate skills: cutting shadowboxes, glazing, adding texture, and various cover treatments. Other ideas include using drawers, adding words and hanging embellishments, working with fiber and beads, transferring images and adding pop-ups.
Great for beginners-excellent photos
Ifyou are new at altered books this is a good way to get started.It is a small book with good, basic ideas to get your feet wet.

Clean and Simple Scrapbooking - the sequel
I found this book very helpful. Filled with many tips and ideas. I just loved this book and have read it from cover to cover and I am ready to read it again. Its a book that all scrapbookers should have.

Another great book
This is the second book of the series and they are both GREAT!, I do recomend start with the first one, full of technique and design ideas!

Simply A Must Have
Any scrapbooker, any style, any budget, this is required reading. It can pretty well wipe your bookshelf of any other scrapping reference books - with the obvious exception of Clean and Simple Scrapbooking part one. Cathy Zielske is the master of her art. Her ability to share her techniques with her readers is unsurpassed. The layout ideas are pure Zielske, no surprises there, but the real value of this book lies in the author's instructive ability; her knack for imparting the underlying fundamentals of design. Collage Primer
Having taken many collage classes. I can tell you that this book is detailed and organized, just like a Claudine Hellmuth class.This is an inspirational book, but it is also a step by step primer...almost as good as taking a class with the Mistress of Collage.
I love this book
I never thought she could top her last book but Claudine did it by changing her color scheme and using more of her personal style.In this book, she encourages the beginner and seasoned collager to try new techinques and face the fear of drawing.She discusses her own journey though burn out....you must have this book

Good for an hour's perusal, but not a keeper
Hellmuth gives advanced techniques for collaging cigar boxes, canvas, and fabric, but I have to agree that the artwork isn't up to the level of techniques she's using. Frankly, I have seen enough pointy dunce caps in collages to last a lifetime! Dunce caps are no longer as fresh and amusing as they once were, and why not? Because anybody can cut out a long paper triangle in 10 seconds and glue it to a paper head in another 10 seconds -- and it looks like everybody does. The creativity prompts run to the no-brainer: "Try a different hat! How about using other shapes of cut-out instead of stars?"She can do better than that.Her homemade cell-phone videos are charming, though, so take a peek at them if you want to see how her creative mind really works.

An exceptional instructional book
A thorough guide to paper engineering of pop-up books. Careful instructions and illustrated examples.

Great resource
This book has beautiful examples and wonderful instructionsIt gave me the confidence to copy and create.

Poor Instructions!
There are dozens and dozens of pictures showing what you could make with paper, pencil, and exacto knife, but the instructions were minimal and only for the simple projects. Beautiful examples are shown throughout the book, but no instructions on how to make them. Having patterns for the more intricate projects would definitely help out. It's an okay book to learn the basic, but lacking for advanced designs.

Awesome Book
This is the book to get for anything concerning making creative books.From artsy books to making your own unique scrapbook, this is a great resource to give you a new idea or a new twist to your paper crafts.

Wonderful Introduction to Bookmaking
I bought this for both my daughter and me to learn how to make books.My daughter was not very interested in reading a book about bookmaking -- she prefers to embark on her own journeys -- but when she saw a few of the examples, she tore it out of my hands and set to work.She has already made the two simple starter versions, and she is 12.It is great fun to see her puzzling through the instructions and turning out a very nice little book.I am looking forward to making photography books.Actually, I'm looking forward to printing the pages using my Epson Pro 4000 on double sided fine art papers such as Illuminatacotton photo rag 300 gsm double sided paper and having my daughter put the books together.

Making small books
For a beginner, I found everything I needed in this book, from materials to step-by-step instructions.Very easy to follow.

Inspiring!
This book is divided into two sections.The first one is an introduction to the techniques and materials used for bookbinding.The technique are illustrated with clear drawings to show you what to do.I don't know anything about bookbinding so I can't tell if this part of the book describes best practices, traditional techniques, or modern adaptations.I can say, however, that it was perfectly understandable and clear.The materials are all common and easy to find...though I would have liked to see more brand names mentioned, just so that I was EXTRA sure I was getting the right stuff at the store.

need lots of materials to make cards
I think that the book had lots of cute ideas but they all require lots of separate materials that I did not already have in my vast collection of cardmaking and scrapbooking supplies. You could use the basic ideas and modify them to make your own cards though.

Innovative Ideas
I found the various different ways of creating sketchbook/journals exhibited in this book very helpful in offering my students creative options to bookmaking.

I bought the book because I liked the ideas it gave me for my own altered book projects. I do wish there were more pictures explaining the processes, but the verbal instructions are very detailed. Not really good for those who learn by "seeing".

teach an old dog to stitch!
i really thought that despite the beautiful cover and the name Maggie Grey, as she is quite the name when fabric is around, this book would be eye candy but not inspiring for me to "work on".

Great entree into the world of journaling and papercrafts
I've always kept a written journal, but never thought of being creative with them until I saw this book on display at a bookstore.I've sinced thumbed through many other similar books (including Perrella's) and Deihn's are more instructive and interesting.I bought this book before I discovered her other one (specifically for Journaling); I'd recommend the latter if you don't do scrapbooks.
Delightful book that makes this art form more approachable
I recently discovered this book at my local library, and have to say that I was amazed by how wonderful it is!Many other books on this topic have been overwhelming to me, showcasing very beautiful books that seemed well beyond my skills.However, this book actually made me feel like I can actually do this myself, rather than just look at others' works.It does a great job covering the basics, including what supplies you can use, how to do basic book modifications, and examples of layouts and the purposes of creating such a journal.The instructions on preparing a book and sample pages are really well done, described in very clear terms with plenty of photos to illustrate each step.I also really enjoyed the various historical pieces throughout the book, to give some idea of how these books have developed over time.I would highly recommend this book, and have to disagree with the review who claimed this book is boring.It isn't!Some of the pieces shown are more simplistic (less cluttered!) than those in other books, but it is a valuable resource for anyone wanting to create an art journal or altered book.

Inspiration for a sometime artist
I ordered this book in preparation for a trip to Alaska.I have always tried to keep travel journals, but since this waa a special trip, I wanted to do a special journal.I used sponging, stencilling, and watercolor techniques on my pages before I left (as suggested by the author) so I always had a colorful page for my journaling. The photos and explanations were very clear and it was fun to do a few pages each night in preparing for the trip. Some pages were left blank and I even tried my hand at sketching again while on the trip.I found that the Uniball waterproof pens worked very well for writing and sketching.I saved many pieces of souvenir folders, leaves, cocktail picks, etc. to add to my finished journal.The trip was so fabulous and exhausting I will have to complete my journal now that I am home.It will be a great accompanying volume to my photo album. ...
