5-0 out of 5 stars Murano Magic
Having recently returned from Venice, I wish I had this book before I left. Mr. Gable's meticulously researched volume offers so much valuable information, any glass collector or any tourist interested in a deeper perspective of the glass art of the city should read this book. The author's grasp of the nuances of the various styles is masterful and gave me a whole new appreciation of the experience I had in Venice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glass collector?Want to be one?You MUST buy this book!
"Murano Magic" is a terrific volume to own if you love collecting Venetian glass as much as I do.Or if you want to learn the ropes. This exhaustively researched (and yet surprisingly easy to read!) book tells you everything about the big glassmaking families and their works.(I especially liked the historical perspective the author gave to discussing the different glassmaking houses.)And the photos are outstanding. Many glass books I've seen just don't have enough photos to show examples of all the different kinds of Venetian glass (there are literally thousands of styles)."Murano Magic" has wonderful photos and lots of them.I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in Venetian glass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made me see Venice with new eyes
It is almost a crime that Amazon is listing this book with "No Photo Available," because it's a real eye-catcher of a volume, with stunning photographs on every page. But don't be fooled by its beauty; this is no mere coffee-table book. Rather, it's an encyclopedic guide, exhaustively researched and engagingly written. I have been fortunate enough to visit Venice several times, but Murano Magic made me see the city and its art with new eyes and a deeper appreciation. I would recommend the book to anyone, but especially to those who are planning a trip to Northern Italy. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
I feel like I wasted my money on this book.Although some of her projects are interesting, her explanation of the fusing process in general was skimpy, and of no help to beginners at all.For example, how long SHOULD one leave glass for a cabachon in the kiln? She gives average temperatures, but no times for actual fusing.10 minutes?2 hours? The beginner is left standing there holding pieces of cut glass and staring at her kiln, having no idea what she should do next. And as for advancing to the wire wrapping and cutting, no way... There are much better books out there, and I wish Ms. Persico would return my money on this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Jayne could do better
While I dearly love taking classes from Jayne, this book does not represent her best work.I thought many of the items featured were not up to her usual style, although this book was from a few years ago. She needs a new book.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT Inspiration for Jewelry Maker !!
I totally disagree with the previous reviewer. I LOVE this book and I pick it up often to look at all of the beautiful pictures. I loved seeing the dichroic glass cut into various shapes and then worked with wire. I also thought the wire bracelets with lampwork beads were neat, and not too hard to make. I started making jewelry 14 years ago and I've seen a lot of designs and a lot of books. If you want a book with colorful pictures for inspiration, you fuse glass AND make jewelry...this is a great book to own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner book!
I had always had an interest in glasswork but never had the drive to look into it more seriously. My wife makes Native American bags, chokers, etc. so I thought it might be nice if I were able to help out by creating some of the beads that she would need or custom ones that she would want.I picked up this book with enough knowledge to know what a glass bead looked like and it is one of the few non-computer "how to" books that I have read cover to cover. The instructions and tips are clear and concise with enough examples to take the mystique out of glasswork. The book imparts enough knowledge to make even the most timid of beginners excited and eager to get started. As of the writing of this review I have yet to obtain the materials to start... but I know that with what I have learned from this book (not to mention having it by my side), I'll be able to successfully start the process of making glass beads and perhaps at some point become good at it (even for a computer geek ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars The real nature of making Glass Beads
I can say alot of things about this book. It is a complete book for the beginner in lamp working soft glass(soda lime glass). It starts at safety, tools, equipment and studio set up. This book filled in a number of blanks from some other glass working and bead books left that I own. A lot of craft hobby books assume you know more than you do. From the first bead you wind, to the advanced techniques. You are guided with well lit niced sized pictures of what is being described. With boxed notes of important info that needs to be reinforced.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
I got the book a couple of hours ago and as a beginner bead maker I just loved it. From the first page I found it fascinating.

I liked this book very much.It was very informative.I'm glad I purchased it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!
Kohler's book is a beautiful compilation of hot glass techniques.Beginning with a brief history of this centuries-old craft, she then discusses various methods of forming hot glass, presenting them first with an artist's appreciation, and then with simple explanations/directions to imitate the featured technique. The book is richly illustrated and inspiring--I found myself marking several pages with technique I wanted to try.5-0 out of 5 stars I found this book to be inspiring and informative.
As an artist working in glass, I found this book to be inspiring and informative. The inclusion of many different artists work expressed the diversity of the medium. It also demonstrates how one particular technique can be used to achieve many different expressions. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Collectable Reference Guides Available
A "Must Have" for any serious Higgins collector. There is an almost overwhelming amount of information presented in a most organized manner. So many wonderful color photographs that I went into sensoryoverload. Loads of great, historical information and imagery. The onlydown side of the book is that the price guide is not representative ofcurrent market values but if looked at properly will still give you a goodidea of how one pattern will relate to another in value.I wish othercollectable genres had reference guides of this caliber.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS
This is truly a masterpiece of editing. The author has truly done an outstanding job. This is a MUST book for any serious Higgins collector as well as anyone who enjoys beautiful glass. The author is certainly to becommended for thisone of a kind work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book as beautiful as the glass
If you want to collect Higgins glass, this book is an absolute must-have. The prices are outdated; with the recent death of Michael Higgins, I have seen pieces sell for double or triple the book's values. This is much morethan a price guide, though. This book details the history of Higgins glass, their techniques, and how to identify what is and is not Higgins glass. There are several beautiful color pictures on almost every page, and Ienjoy looking at them almost as much as I enjoy looking at the pieces in mycollection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive book on the subject, for glass artists or just droolers
I'd postponed writing a review of this book because I imagined that it was only fair to read the entire text before I wrote about it. I've never really gotten to concentrate on the words, though, because the photos are so, *SO* astonishingly beautiful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great New Tiffany Lamp Book
It is about time that another great book joins the volumes published in the 70's and 80's.There is some new information here as well as photos of lamps that have not been seen for years. This book is well worth the money for any fan of these incredible lamps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Book
I saw this book in a museum bookstore and immediately came home and purchased it on Amazon. I'm a stained glass student and looking at this book really inspired me. The photographs are stunning and the book is packed full of great information about Louis Comfort Tiffany and his studio. Included are his drawings for a few windows, information about the methods used to make them, and there's even info on the process used to create the glass. Very informative and a joy to look at. ... I obviously did not have read the reviews close enough. This is5-0 out of 5 stars Wright+glass=beauty
"Frank Lloyd Wright's Glass Designs," by Carla Lind, is one of a series of "mini-books" devoted to the work of one of the world's greatest architects. This volume, which explores Wright's interest in glass, contains many praiseworthy features: Lind's concise yet informative text, a wealth of stunning full-color photographs, fascinating sidebar quotes from Wright and others, and a useful bibliography for further reading.5-0 out of 5 stars Good things come in small packages

Editorial Review

Voluptuous shapes in luscious color, Dale Chihuly's large-scale glass sculptures are all about immediate sensory experience. It's likely no book could capture the intoxication of being in the presence of clusters of glass forms that look like undersea life or tropical forests, hanging overhead or rising up from the floor in fabulous splendor.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars eye candy for your visual palette
This book is a fabulous deal. With about 75% of the book being full page color photographs of Chihuly's work, this volume really helped me discover who this artist is and what his work is all about. The reproductions are of the highest quality as is the art.The two essays opening the book are well written, allowing beginners and veterens of glass alike to pick up info about the artist, his technique, and his place in history.Notes from Chihuly and his team are provided to give a personal inside look at the art, which I found to be very interesting.Even if you don't know anything about glass, buy this as a coffee table book.I guarantee it will make you look culturally saavy and will be a great conversation starter.Best of all, if you'd rather look than read, this is definitely the volume for you. It's like taking a world tour of Chihuly's glass installations, art that is accessible and fun to view for all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chihuly Projects
This book is best described by the words color and form. Many collectors of glass have discovered Chihuly and his freedom of color and form but not many can travel to see his installations all over the world. This book is so well done it satisfies the eye with the color and forms but the full size of the works of Dale Chihuly are only realized in person,so let it suffice to enjoy the best book on Dale Chihuly and his works. This is excellent photography of Art Glass at its finest. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Marble Mania is catching!
Marble Mania has fine photographs of every imaginable marble from pebbles found alongside streams to the Industrial Revolution in Germany & Austria. Here the cutting of agate cubes & polishing them into marbles for export all over the world became a huge cottage industry. You have tosee the beauty of all the clay, pottery, crockery, china & porcelainglobes. It was fun to read this big book. Found myself chatting at thelocal recycle shop about the blue canning jars in their windows filled withmarbles. Eyeing them eagerly, with a little more knowledge & a few morenames.

4-0 out of 5 stars Prairie Designs for Stained Glass Windows
I am a fan of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the United States, as exemplified in Mission and Prairie designs.I used this book to assist me in designing tile and mosaic murals using themes from the Arts and Crafts period. With a little time, a copy machine, and some colored pencils, you can make some original designs for use in your own home or business.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Designs But No Photos of Finished Projects
This book has some very nice designs, but I was disappointed that there were no photographs of completed projects.I am not very familiar with the prairie style, so I would have liked getting some suggestion from thedesigner as to possible colors, textures, and layout.A few of thepatterns have shading (10 out of 48) to suggest color layouts, but ofcourse the design I wanted to make was not shaded (Murphy's Law I guess). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pattern book
I have this book and have referred to it many times and have used several of the patterns. There is a nice variety and the patterns cover a broad collection of interests and tastes.Excellent book and a must have in the stained glass studio.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is Ok but...
The designs are wonderful;however, they are all in black and white.. I expected more...

5-0 out of 5 stars great designs abound
Not only were there great traditional designs, but I also found some beautiful and unique nature designs which I hadn't seen in other stained glass books and I was definitely pleased. The contemporary designs range from fairly simple to complex, but do not contain patterns that are unrecognizable as some stained glass patterns books do.This book definitely has variety, variety, variety. ...
