5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Creative, Clear and Concise
I havetried stained glass with several different instructors, but without a lot of success. The instructors had their own technique and were busy with a lot of students. This terrific book shows you the way and not only with words but with the pictures and all the steps needed.Obviously the authors are experienced teachers, creative and educated in their art.
5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Fun!
If you want to venture outside the realm of traditional stained glass creations, this book is for you! There are several projects in this book that take minor steps away from the traditional techniques and far more that go beyond. It was fun from start to finish...a must have for any stained glass library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intermediate Ideas
This was full of interesting, out-of-the-ordinary, ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Wonderful Exploration!
Donald-Brian Johnson, et al, have put together a wonderful book here, something truly superlative! The photos (and glass items) are fabulous, and Johnson's text really does a great job of presenting the higgins story. It's much more than an antiques guide and Schiffer deserves credit for committing to such an impressive publication. At $60 a book, it's pricey, but the visuals you'll find inside are well worth it. If you're a higgins glass fan (I am), you be excited by all the unique samples on display. It's hard to beat "Higgins: Adventures in Glass," but it's been done here. And it's great to know that the higgins art continues onward with new items created today by higgins studio. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Perhaps the definitive book on glass painting, this comprehensive volume explains everything beginners need to know in order to find great success with the craft. But it also overflows with great ways for more experienced glass painters to broaden their repertoire. Extensive step-by-step directions and hundreds of clear color photos cover all the basics (outlining and its many variations; pattern transfer; painting with many types of paints and applicators) as well as numerous alternate effects (including layering, marbling, embedding, metal leafing, and stenciling). Related methods are also shown (etching; glass cutting; using different kinds of glues). The 25 projects range from patterns painted on existing glass forms (glass-fronted key cupboard, small table, vases, bottles, serving platter, lamp) to more elaborate shapes cut and glued together after painting (art deco clock, gilded box, suncatchers); some are suitable for the novice, while others are more advanced. In addition to complete pattern templates for every project--and sometimes even alternate designs too--the authors provide a few hundred other motifs so readers can take off on their own. An excellent overview of materials and a list of suppliers round out this wonderful package. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Glass Painting - Allan and Barry, thanks for sharing your 20 years of experience!
Since I am a beginner to glass painting and have one book on the subject I was looking for something more comprehensive that covered other techniques. After reading the review and previewing from amazon's "look inside", I had to buy the book."The Complete Guide to Glass Painting, is just what it says, it is a good start for beginners and and provides lots of projects, techniques and motifts for the more advanced glass painter. There are so many techniques I never though of that was not covered in my one glass book. When the book first arrived in the mail, I glanced through it quickly; now I am reading the book word for word so as not to miss a great tip. Each page is well designed and layed out for easy reading and understanding with visual direction. You can't go wrong. For those who have more knowedge, this book has 400 motifs to use or combine to create fantastic glass paintings and projects that spark ideas. If you must have a glass painting book, this will be the only one you will need.Allan and Barry, thanks for sharing your 20 years of experience, this is a great book.If the authors ever collaborated to produce anther book; I will be looking out for more of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginner to intermediate
If you just are getting one book about glass painting to try the hobby out then this is a good choice. It has a good overview of the materials available, step by step instructions for different techniques and templates to trace over (glass is perfect for tracing ;-) so you can get started on some small projects. The color pictures are plentiful and pretty, and the price is not too high as one might expect with color pics.Even if you are just into crafts and later find that glass painting isn't your thing the templates and pics can carry over into other crafts.
5-0 out of 5 stars A FURTHER MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHORS

4-0 out of 5 stars Encouraging start up
With no experience in glass work, this book is very encouraging for the beginner.Exercises are simple and clear to understand.3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty but shallow
I bought this book based on reviews from this page. I agree that the projects are beautiful and the artist very talented. The book is not really a "how to" in my opinion as it gives very sketchy technical information on all threeglass techniques. I would not feel comfortable investing in an expensive kiln and supplies or attempting these projects without reading a far more thorough treatment of the subject first. It is very inspirational to look at: pretty but shallow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to all there is in the glass world
There's so much to do with glass, it's hard to know where to start. If you are interested in glass, but want to know more about the various aspects of what you can do with glass, this is a very good place to start. There are many examples of projects for fused glass, stained glass, lampwork, painting, etc.None of them are total in-depth, but this is a good cross-type of intro.I enjoyed it and got many inspired ideas from this book.I enjoy, especially, fused glass and this was a good basic review. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Some Reviews are Misleading
This book does contain Tiffany window designs which Tiffany created using Tiffany glass not modern glass. They reproduce very well when scanned. I use them in computer application of the designs. The book which has thepostcards is "Tiffany Stained Glass Windows" by Alastair Duncan(ISBN: 0486253368)which I also bought. This book does have some coloredimages and when combined with the Duncan Postcards you can produce somenice images. Fifteen or sixteen of the postcards are images that are alsoin this book. I would suggest buyers consider getting them both.

4-0 out of 5 stars great projects
If you are into doing windows in the style of Tiffany you need this book...lots of beautiful patterns which can be enlarged at your local copy center. There are color illustrations of many of the patterns which should help in selecting glass but, as usual, the actual glass selection is up toyou. It would be nice if all the glass used was specifically identified(mfgr., cat. no., amount needed, etc.), but hey, then we wouldn't have allthe fun (?) of agonizing over the selection.

2-0 out of 5 stars The colorized images are attractive.
There are 60 designs, with 16 color images on the front and back cover. The line drawings are difficult to determine the color of glass to use. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK Book
I was expecting a little more from this book. The designs are not my style but do give the beginner somewhere to start. The book itself is clear and the pictures are good quality. I ahve had a hard time finding a good fusing book... I'm still looking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fusing 1, 2, 3
not a bad book if you are just starting out, they go through Items needed to a couple projects as well, worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Place To Start
Petra Kaiser's book on Glass Fusing is a great place to begin your exploration of warm glass. The book is layed out very well, highlighting important information, for example, by providing tables of temperatures when different things happen to glass...slumping, tack fusing, full fusing, etc. A beginner needs to know about equipment and supplies, kilns, safety, and all about glass itself...Kaiser covers everything you need to know to start out working with fused glass. Then she puts you to work, where you learn as you do! I like the way she takes you though a series of 15 projects, all of which build on each other, expanding your knowledge at the same time as you reinforce important skills, such as glass cutting. As an artist I also found that all projects were easily adapted to my own aesthetic, therefore they did not have to be copied exactly to learn the intended lesson. As a former art instructor, I recommend it highly because it not only provides you with basic information -- it also provides you with hands-on experience. ... Read more

I bought this book, knowing nothing about making stepping stones or working with stained glass.Great book!I have made some beautiful stepping stones (using tumbled stained glass). . .this book gave me the basics and some great ideas.I recommend it for anyone interested in crafts of this type!

5-0 out of 5 stars Liked it so much I bought a copy
I checked this book out from the library and, after renewing it once, realized I just needed my own copy. There are details, like suggesting soaking pieces before using them in a mosaic, that I've not seen elsewhere, and I checked out over a dozen mosaic books.

There are lots and lots of great easy ideas.I feel really inspired after just looking through the book! The technique the author uses is different from the one I've always used, but it looks fun and probably a great way for kids and other beginners to start.I'm anxious to try it, and I plan to incoropate a lot of the ideas from the books into my future mosaic projects!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Grand Mosaic Book
I bought this book for the historical effects. After reading during the past week, it has turned out to be one of the best mosaic books I own. The photography is breathtaking. Since buying a stack of mosaic books at an estate sale, I have always been a huge Emma Biggs follower. However, this author is amazing and shows how to use fragments of the materials to create fabulous pieces of art.I'm an instant fan and re-energized.
5-0 out of 5 stars Five stars for illustrations and projects; not "how-to" book
The photos are breathtaking, full of inspiration for anyone interested in any kind of craft in which pieces are assembled, whether mosaics or quilting or large-scale projects like creating brick patterns in a patio. Aside from books I have about classical art, no other source seems close to providing the rich visuals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Mosaic book I have
This book is beautiful.Though, I definitely do not recommend this for beginners or for someone who wants step by step instructions. This book shows her taking some inspiration from ancient mosaics and then altering them for her own use.I have also done the same E.g. the front cover shows the leaves and lizards.I do a lot of paving stones.I simply just did two of the black leaves onto a white background onto a paving stone.Very simple, but gosh it looks great.Read more

Editorial Review

Superb colorist Kaffe Fassett departs from his usual medium of textiles to unleash his magic on the world of mosaics. Teamed with expert needle artist-turned-mosaicist Candace Bahouth, Fassett proves no less adept at manipulating the harder materials--glass and ceramic tesserae, broken china and tiles, mirror fragments, pebbles, seashells, and even faux pearls--than his accustomed softer substances of fabric and yarn. As with most of Fassett's oeuvre, this volume is more an assemblage of highly imaginative ideas than a traditional how-to approach. A number of the projects do include step-by-step instructions and there is good coverage of the basics (tools, materials, bases, tesserae preparation, adhesives, grouting), but the presentation presumes the readers' willingness to experiment, as well as some degree of confidence in their own creativity. But again, as is typical of Fassett's productions, the simple act of leafing through these pages offers unlimited inspiration. Stunning photographs abound with brilliant hues and spectacular creations by the authors and by mosaic artists around the world: grottoes, chapels, cars, walls, furniture, terraces, entire buildings. And perhaps mosaic work is not so different from textile manipulation after all: witness the many pieces composed like a patchwork quilt, or the tapestry-upholstered armchair that reveals itself actually to be entirely covered not in fabric but in ceramic tesserae. This volume is truly a feast for the eyes. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Designs but no color guides for clarity
The designs are very good. The problem I see with this book is there no finished designs or color guides. If you are new to stained glass it could be difficult to visualize a finished design. But all in all a good design book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting designs but the title is misleading
I found some very interesting nature patterns in this book, but almost a fifth of the book contained designs (at least 12) which I found unrecognizable as anything belonging to nature or anything else. If you are into these abstract designs, then this is an added bonus. I was disappointed and would rather have had traditional nature designs as pictured on the cover. ... Read more

The sub-title on this book is "a technical manual" which is just not accurate. This book is an excellent overview of some of the techniques and tools used in furnace type glass blowing. It is not a technical or instructional manual, or a least not a good one.Anyone who wants to learn how to blow glass should go buy a copy of Edward T. Schmid's books and work from them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality Images
My application of Mr. Sibbett's designs begin with their being scanned. As with all his books the quality of the images in this book are very good. I appreciate the slight similiarity between some images that lend themselveswell to making matching items. A variety of designs from simple to morecomplex are offered. At most their are two to a page making them easy towork with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nash Family Story:This book gives Tiffany worker's truth
An indispensable historical find for collectors and dealers. A Mint copy, heavily and beautifully illustrated in color and in black and white. Reproductions of images of early Tiffany pieces. Leslie Nash's father Arthur developed Favrile Glass; Leslie was the director of various Tiffany Furnace operations. So, much of this book is firsthand not only in the writing but in its images, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Love of Vikings
Having spent years of listening to stories told by my Bedstamor about Denmark and all the lovely places she used to live near that had an abundance of Viking artifacts, it was a thrill to see many of the Viking symbols described in those stores come to life in the sweaters!I adored the detail about where each design came from along with a photo of the artifact that inspired the cable pattern.
3-0 out of 5 stars you can't judge a book by it's cover!
It is a very . beautifulbook and I will endure to knit several other things from it at some time. However, the tunic I knitted was slightly off and I had to add a stitch to the cable pattern to work it out and it's the first thing I've spent over a year knitting (oh the slowness of my knitting needles) and I absolutely detested it. IT'S STILL A LOVELY BOOK THOUGH! ... Read more
