5-0 out of 5 stars Not an encyclopedia!
This is a narrative history of porcelain, lavishly illustrated. It covers only porcelain, not other forms of ceramics. It focuses on wares that I would consider exclusively museum quality. The illustrations are gorgeous. The text is gracefully written and thoroughly informative.Although it is not arranged topically as a real encyclopedia would be, it does have a marvelous glossary at the end that is an education in itself. With the caveat that this is a narrative not a topical reference, I highly recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
I used this book to do my first stained glass project without the guidance of my instructor. The cardstock templates are great -- you can cut the pieces out and save them for later works, just remember to make aphotocopy! The book has a variety of designs to suit just about everytaste, from Pennsylvania Dutch to more abstract modern designs. There arealso several different skill levels, so you can progress to moredifficult/complex boxes as your skills improve. The explanations of thetools and techniques assume that you have a very basic understanding ofstained glass craft, so I'd recommend using this book after you've taken acouple of classes and are ready to branch out on your own. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, rich in text and pictures
I first saw this book in Ravenna, Italy, the capital of mosaics where I was taking a workshop, and I passed on buying it there. But I'm glad I bought it. One of the things I like about it (Goodwin is a very goodtechnician) is the way she has taken different mosaic material -- stone, smalti, vitreous glass, ceramic, broken china etc. and made different birdsso you can see what the properties of the tesserae bring to the design. While everyone feels it's necessary to write history on mosaics, Goodwin'sis particularly interesting. Even though I'm not a huge fan of all of herwork, I did like this book quite a bit and I'm pleased I have it in mycollection. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good range of difficuly levels
I really like the patterns in this book. The designs range from simple patterns that could be used as suncatchers to more elaborate designs with over 100 cuts a lot of which are concave. Some patterns would look best with jewels and seemed to be designed for them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Range of Complexity in Design
As with all Mr. Sibbett's books, the images translate well to computer application when scanned. Most designs are two to a page with three on some pages. There is a nice range of complexity in the designs from simple tovery detailed. Some designs too are scaled to produce items where the imageneeds to be large, for instance when you would want the image of only oneor two flowers on the side of a box. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for home dec-no jewelry at all
If you are looking for a book with some great home decor items, this is it.I was looking for a book on jewelry (it said Jewelry Crafts after the title) so I'm disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars home decorating items made with wire and glass beads!!!
I've done my research before purchasing this book and I LOVE it. This book is for home decorating purpose. Projects includes napkin ring, window covering, wall hangers, lantern and more. There are projects for every skill levels. This book is great because all projects have actual pictures and written step by step instructions along with a list of material you need for each project. The authur also provides a list of tools and how you can use them to achieve a specific wire bending tasks. Some of the tools you already have in your kitchen or in your garage; all I purchased is a pair of round nose piler($3), flat nose piler($3), beads from local craft outlet and wire cutter($7),steel wire($1.99/spool that will last you many project) from home depot to start my first project. This is a very clearly written book according to me that I have no previous experience in wire crafting. I did came across some parts of instructions that aren't clear to me but I manage to figure them out.Keep in mind that all the instructional books are written in someone else's perspective even a well written book like this require some effort from the readers to interpret the message that the authur tries to communicate. One minor problem is that the authur uses milimeter to indicate the diameter or the thickness of the wire instead of gauges which is most commonly used. You can find a converting table from your local craft store it will be handy when ordering the wire online or in hardware store.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Just an OK to sub par book for glass painting
Just beginning glass painting and swayed by the previous glowing reviews, I purchased a copy of "The Glass Painting Book" by Jane Dunsterville. Also, the photo of the gorgeous painted mirror on the back cover certainly helped!I will say that I am VERY disappointed as the book didn't meet my expections.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Glass Painting Book
I was so struck by the beauty and vivid colors of the projects in this book that I just had to buy it. The picture lanterns on page 30 are ofinterest to me for they require no special glass, just old jars and suchthat we all have around, or can find at flea markets for little cost and weactually recycle and make them beautiful by painting. I also love herkindly faces of the Sun & Moon........just beautiful. Her techniquesare clear and easy to follow. The book is just so EXCITING!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!!

1-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE
I too wish I had read past the first reviewer. Must have been a born optimist!! The best thing about this book, THE PRICE. What a total waste of my time. I learned stringing beads as a toddler! I was looking for a GLASS BEAD BOOK and how to MAKE THEM. Why not put this book with the stringers! Shame on you Amazon for leading us down the wrong path. No wonder this book did not have pictures of the inside. shame shame shame!
2-0 out of 5 stars Very Misleading Title
I should have read the other reviews first. If you are looking for a book to outline and explain the technique of glass bead making, THIS IS NOT THE BOOK!!!!Only buy this if you want some pictures of beads or are interested in making jewerely.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title!
While I do believe that this book has merit, it is as a JEWELRY MAKING BOOK, not as a bead making book. I feel that the Title of the book is misleading.....to me, a "Bead Artist" is a person who MAKES beads, not a person who makes jewelry with beads. That is a "JEWELRY ARTIST". A small point, but significant, since this book is listed under "Lampwork". Nice photographs, and as I said, the book has merit if you are looking for some VERY SIMPLE stringing ideas. ... Read more

The chapter on the Bacorn Bottles is superb, and greatly appreciated.I cannot recommend this book more highly than a five star*****

2-0 out of 5 stars there's much better available
This is an alright book for absolute beginners, but not up to the standard of the many other books available.I would recommend 390 Traditional Stained glass designs by Hywel Harris as a much better choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Large patterns for once!
This book has a relatively good coverage of Victorian era designs. The patterns are large, so photocopy and enlargment is easy and clear. Designs are also relatively simple (I would consider this book for the advanced beginner or intermediate). There are few very intricate patterns traditional of the richest stained glass panels, but you surely have a lot of very nice patterns for your home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author Provides Patterns for Today's Hobbiest
The first step to my using Mr. Sibbett's designs is to scan them. He provides clearly defined, good quality images that scan well at high resolution. The quality of images is not always apparent to the naked eye.The images are large enough to duplicate well without loosing detail. Formy purposes the max of three images a page at most works well. Other booksmay have more patterns but they loose quality when made larger. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Again S. Isenberg makes it easy ! Beveling and Engraving!
In his latest book Seymour Isenberg takes on the mystery of making glass that sparkles in the light. In this teaching book, he covers glass engraving and beveling step by step. I learned from this book that correct preparation of the engraving equipment will be worth the time for the eyecatching results.Isenberg's well illustrated explanations of the shapes of the grinding wheels, how to mount them on the mandrels and comfortably manipulate the glass against the wheels make it easy to follow as one-two-three.The wide variety of effects achieved from five basic shaped wheels is amazing. There are many examples of the lines and shapes possible with explanations how to do them and patterns to try. There is a basic primer on how to score and break glass in preparation for engraving and beveling.Isenberg explains you don't have to do stained glass to enjoy stone wheel engraving. But if you need help in cutting glass, I highly recommend "How To Work In Stained Glass" 3rd edition to cover this in further depth. But I am surprised the Publisher has done this book a disservice by NOT INCLUDING THE WORD "BEVELING" IN THE TITLE OR BOOK DESCRIPTION.Almost all engraving is executed on beveled glass and here's the only book currently available that tells how to do it.With the new tabletop bevel machines available for hobby/small studio use, this book is an invaluable aid in learning the process.Again the photos are close-up to show exactly what is happening and how to avoid problems in making your own shaped bevels. The combination of both glass techniques--beveling your own shape and then engraving a design makes this hands on process very rewarding for the glass artist wanting total control. Seymour Isenberg's conversational style of teaching makes it easy to understand and enjoy engraving and beveling as another relaxing facet of glass work.Even though I haven't tried it yet, with this book in hand -- I think I'll be fine -- with some practice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The in-mosaics
Authors Joann Locktov and Leslie Plummer Clagett praise the multi-talented mosaic-maker. Mosaic-makers color like painters, shape tesserae like sculptors, and weave like fiber artists. They go way back, to ancient Chinese pebbled streets.4-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring collection
This is an interesting, inspiring and beautifully presented book of work from mosaic artists around the world. There is so much variety in terms of style, technique, materials, and colour, and I very much like the fact that there are many photos of works in their entirety as well as pieces showing closeups of the same work in detail. There are generally between four and six pages for each artist, showcasing their work and talking a little bit about their artistic background, their technique used for certain pieces and their inspirations, all of which I found fascinating and brought me to a greater understanding of how the piece was created.5-0 out of 5 stars NOT Cutesy!
