3-0 out of 5 stars More of an idea book
As a beginner this book isn't for me. The detailed written instructions become confusing and I wish Mary Ann would have placed step by step picture examples with the project for me to double check myself to see if I'm understanding her concept(s). To me this book is more of a gallery book that has some great photographs and ideas in it. It'll give your creative eye a different perspective in how to mix color with silver, gold and black to make pretty items. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars beginners book with a small focus
I purchased this book at a jewelry crafting shop after leafing thru it, specifically for the chain mail instructions in the second half.for anyone interested in chain mail in a jewelry application this book is a good start, contrary to most of the online sources i found that focused on the armor and period specific applications of the art.as for the wire knitting, i do like some of styles but have also seen other books on wire weaving that were a bit better and had more clear instructions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very specific
I agree with some of the other reviewers in that this book is not what you'd expect. With that in mind, however, I love the book.It shows a different direction in wire jewelry than I had considered and it is quite an adventure to create these pieces of art. If you want to be a skillful wireworker, then this book is a definite addition to your library.Learning the techniques included here brings a greater dimension of talent/skill to my work and I'm better for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An unusual step-by-step approach which leaves nothing to the imagination alone
A fun, light reading style provides a very approachable guide to beaders with Margot Potter's The Impatient Beader: Easy Jewelry Projects For The Busy Beginner! If author Margot Potter's name sounds familiar, it's because she's a QVC on-air presenter and featured artist on PBS TV's 'Beads, Baubles and Jewels' show, and here provides a collection of master techniques and tools for making necklaces, bracelets, earrings and more. Color photos present not only the usual finished product, but close-ups of beading in process for a unusual step-by-step approach which leaves nothing to the imagination alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lively and fun -- this book is a blast!
I have a standing twice-monthly babysitting get-together with my nine year-old niece, and I got this book to try some projects together. The book is intelligently laid out with a concise shopping list (important, because I don't enjoy spending a lot of time wandering around craft stores), and easy-to-follow photographs that lead the reader every step of the way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Have a Blast Bedecking Yourself with Beads!
I have never read a beading book written quite in Margot Potter's style before. She clearly has a charming personality and it shines through, here. She is witty and intelligent, but even more importantly (although that makes this book a great read, anyway!), for beginning beaders, she is thorough and totally informed about the subject of beads, tools, findings, and particularly how to put together a design. Designing is a talent. Margot is a great teacher: you learn without even realizing: she explains the importance of beading boards, color wheels, why you need certain tools and how to use them. Her projects have fun, snappy titles like: Victorian Temptress Choker (whoo-hoo!) and Bahama Mama (which put me in a mellow mood).I was attracted not only to her color schemes and her choices of projects, both simple and more complex. I liked her tips. I was encouraged by the manner in which she explained each project, and I liked her little cartoon person--but then--I am a little redhead too! Her hair is more perfect than mine could ever hope to be, but I felt a kinship as I enjoyed reading The Impatient Beader. I look forward to making the "Cha-Cha-Cha" Bracelet as my first project from this book! I am excited and enthused by the fun imparted by author Margot Potter! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
It's hard to imagine what one did to learn about the jewelry collection, state and personal, of British royalty before this book. Reading Suzy Menkes' preface give you an idea: you research it and write a book. And that is what she did. This book is scholarly, it's interesting, it's personal. It answers so many questions: what jewelry is owned by the royal family, and what belongs to the UK? Why does the queen wear some jewels and not others? What are those little portrait brooches on ribbon? What happens to all the jewels give the royal family? How did they acquire the jewels that they now wear? The royal jewel collection is richer and more vast than you'd ever guess from just tracking the jewels you've seen the queen and her family wear in the last few decades, and much of it was acuired from Queen Victoria's reign and onward. Up until Victoria and the spoils of British Empire, kings or queens would have to hire jewels to put in their crown frames when they needed to attend some regal function --their own coronation, for example. Suzy Menkes has done a fantastic job of finding out the history and use of the most magnificent jewel collection in the world. The paintings and photographs show many of the jewels on the original recipient or acquirer (Queen Mary's avid, avaristic jewel-buying is reponsible for the much of the jewel wealth the family now possesses) and how they've been reset by subsequent owners. In spite of being scholarly, The Royal Jewels is not at all dry. Menkes has gleaned a lot about the personalities of the wearers. And the politics!! Who gets what, and when they get it, the curiously paltry amount jewels Princess Diana (still living at the time of the latest edition of this book) and the Duchess of York received from their in-laws. An amazing book, essential to anyone interested in jewels, the British Royal Family, even history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beader's Reference
This book has been helpful to me because I am a beginner and there were things that I did not understand. They used pictures to explain the different sizes, shapes and materials used for beads.

5-0 out of 5 stars For both beginners and beadworkers alike
Over 200 beadwork graphics and designs, photos, and project ideas contribute to a comprehensive reference for both beginners and beadworkers alike. From large and small beadwork projects to finishing fringes and edgings, each project is accompanied by a graph, instructions, and numerous resources. The color photos of completed results are exquisite embellishments. A Beader's Reference is a unique and highly recommended addition to any dedicated craftmaker or needlecrafter's reference collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars useful AND inspirational
the previous reviewer hit all the highpoints.the charts are wonderful.i particularly appreciate the charts for beaded crochet, since i haven't been able to find many (this is not to say that they aren't out there, just that i haven't found them). a very nice touch is the inclusion of a color key for each chart--you can see at a glance what colors are needed.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lavish and Visually Stunning
I acquired this book for jewelry design reference, it was highly recommended by a designer friend who trained in Paris for Jewelry design. The book contains just over 140 pages, the first 54 dedicated to text accompanied with quick sketches depicting Coco Chanel and her fashions; the remainder is filled with glossy photos of Chanel's jewelry creations, most in full color, a few other period stills in black and white. The photos are large, very sharp and show much of the fine detail of her jewelry, often dedicating one page to a single piece.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book
I like this book not only because it explains the technique of resin casting very well, but also for its beautiful pictures of real resin art. Although I will never be able to produce such work, you get the feeling that she sky is the limit with this material

4-0 out of 5 stars Native American Beadwork & more!
This is a great book for those looking for authentic beadwork styles. The author covers a broad range of styles. He also discusses different backgrounds and even provides instruction for hide tanning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preserving tribal styles and techniques
The author, Joel Monture, is a professor of traditional arts at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe.His thorough textbook documents not only native American beadwork techniques, but the tedious methods of leather preparation that are necessary prior to beading.
3-0 out of 5 stars It's worth looking at.
I just got this book along with two others the other night. Haven't had the chance yet to read it completely yet. Having scanned it a bit though, I would say the section with color photos is good, particularly if you're a crafter looking for patterns. The text I've read up to this point is good and worth reading. I've had a little bit of a hard time with some of the diagarms though, particularly some of the ones dealing with hides and hide tanning. Not that I'm looking to tan hides right now, but I thought it would still be interesting to understand the process. Several of the stitch diagrams are easier to follow though.
