5-0 out of 5 stars I wanna go home and KNIT!
I just got this book delivered to me at work along with Volume Two: Cables, and they are both awesome! What I really like is that there's no "learn to knit" section taking up precious pages...just a short forward and then on to the stitch patterns, every single one of which is just gorgeous! Can't say enough great things about this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars I want one too!
I bought this book (and Volume II) as a gift and wish now that I had bought two . . . one for me, also!It is a wealth of information and it also looks good.Besides ordering my very own copies of I and II, I have already pre-ordered Volume III.

2-0 out of 5 stars The editors missed a MAJORopportunity to make this outstanding dictionary!
First of all, I will admit that I am a sucker for knitting and crochet dictionaries.I have all of the classics from the Harmony guides, Barbara Walker's treasuries to the older Mon Tricot books. There have been several other dictionaries, and I have also purchased them rationalizing that if I miss a pattern in one book, I may give it more attention in another one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning knitwear
If it's written by a Starmore, you can't go wrong. This book is full of absolutely gorgeous sweaters that will inspire even the novice knitter.I bought this book 10 years ago and it motivated me to learn to knit to a much more advanced level. It's a shame that Alice Starmore's books are out of print for the most part, as it deprives those new to knitting of some of the most beautiful books and patterns ever created (unless you can afford the ridiculous price for used).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive aran patterns
This book goes from fairly simple to very challenging. There is something for every level of confident knitter. I love that there are patterns for men, women and children. This book is excellent for those that have been wanting to try a pattern that looks complicated, but is rather very straightforward. I am anxious to try knitting a sweater in the round instead of knitting in pieces and having to sew them together. I highly recommend this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Knitting Vintage Socks
This is an excellent book. Full of history and patterns. So glad I purchased it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic does not mean boring
I generally have a policy of not buying knitting books unseen - it's always a good idea to look before you leap to avoid cluttering your bookshelf with patterns you don't care for or instructions you find unhelpful.I broke that rule for Knitting Vintage Socks, and I'm happy I did.The historical sections are enlightening, the discussions of technique are clear and helpful, and the patterns themselves are interesting and attractive. The simple, elegant lace and color stich motifs featured will hold a knitter's attention without being needlessly complex. I can see myself turning to Knitting Vintage Socks again and again, as will beginning and experienced socknitters alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!!
Put "vintage" in the title of anything and I am there, though usually I am not pleased with the result. This book does NOT dissapoint. It is everything it promises to be and then some!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't overlook this book--it's more than "holiday" knitting!
It's almost a shame this book was organized around the "holiday" knitting theme.I didn't even look at this book for months because I assumed it was limited to Christmas stockings and tree skirts.Of course, there ARE a couple of Christmas stockings and tree skirts, but there is so much more.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply inspiring! Not just for the holidays, either!
I had seen this book before the holidays, but didn't buy it to avoid any unneeded pressure to do too much knitted gift-giving.I'm glad I realized my own weakness, else I would have worked myself to the bone!Melanie has done it again!Wonderful ideas and fabulous photos and beautiful embellishments.I am ready for winter - actually, year roundgift giving! This selection of patterns is elegant and gracious (nothing trite or boring here). There is much more to this book than just holidays - the patterns are classic and adaptable for all 365 days... and there is something for all skill levels, too. While I hope to graduate to the more complicated projects (some day), I am happy with the simpler patterns and pure inspiration. I am going to my LYS to pick upnew threads for the flowers patterns!

5-0 out of 5 stars Original knitting ideas.
This book is not your run of the mill knitting book, it goes way beyond scarves and hats. It has very creative ideas such as knittedChristmas tree ornaments, a pair of knee high socks, ballerina-like slippers and many others. The only drawback is this book is for a somewhat experienced to advanced knitters. But for people like me who are just starting out, it gives you a goal of what you would like to do. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very appealing designs and clear directions
I just finished knitting the "Sensational Shirttail" from this book, a v-neck aran cardigan. The design appears complicated and is rated intermediate, but it was truly easy to follow the very clear instructions. Everyone who has seen it loves it and is astonished that I, a novice knitter, actually did it all myself, and in less than three weeks! I am ready to begin others sweaters from this book, just trying to decide what colors and types of yarn to use. Oh, another great thing about this book is that it gives you the yarn weight used in the original pattern and the yardage, as well as the needle sizes, so you can adapt to your choice of fiber. I knitted my sweater in a chunky weight cotton, and I couldn't be happier with it. There are so many other beautiful patterns in this book, I'm sure it will appeal to just about every knitter.

2-0 out of 5 stars I thought Aran was a product of the AGES, not the 80's...
I recently bought an armload of the prettiest fuschia pink Debblie Bliss silk aran yarn, and had been waiting by my mailbox with much anticipation for my new aran pattern treasury to arrive to put my sassy pink yarn to good use.Alas, what was advertised and what arrived were two different things: for starters, none of the patterns in this book look the slightest bit "aran."
5-0 out of 5 stars At last, a collection from the back issues of Knitters
These patterns were so popular that back issues of "Knitters Magazine" were going for quite high sums on Ebay. Now, after a lot of begging on the part of knitters around the world, Knitters Magazine and XRX Press have collected patterns by type from those hot issues and released them in book form. THANK YOU! Now I don't have to sift through back issues or beg copies of friends to find certain patterns I like.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
To a knitter, this book has lots of humor. The humor is mixed with author truths and quotes from famous people. It's a nice little read that a person can pick up, read, put down five minutes later...then pick up again even later still....and pick up right where they left off, or open the book to a different spot, and still enjoy the book. The Yarn Harlot does it again!

5-0 out of 5 stars It makes you feel good to know.....
What can I say, as a knitter for over 45 years........I am not alone. My experiences as a knitter that I felt were unique to me were not. Knowing/reading that they have beenexperiencesd by others is a good feeling. It's a great read and it was worth giving up some knitting time.A must read for all knitters.

4-0 out of 5 stars please, how did you know

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book on shawls !!
Loved this book !!I've read it cover to cover a few times now, and like it more and more each time.Great photos of every project. Some history on specific shawls, which I appreciate.Lots of different folks' designs, which is nice.I'm an intermediate knitter but new to lace.About to start my first shawl, wish me luck !

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection
This book contains a gorgeous varity of shawls, of all shapes (square, rectangular, triangular, faroese, and scarf length and width). The lace stitching varies too, from intermediate to advanced, and recommended yarns are lace through medium weight, depending on the project. Most are designed to be all one color, but a couple in the back use mutiple colors - very interesting and beautiful look. I am knitting my first project now, chosen because I already had the appropriate yarn- DK weight lightly brushed alpaca in a heathered purply-mauve color - that I am using to recreate the "featherweight fantasy", a rectangular shawl with fringe and a diamond-like lace pattern. It is so beautiful, I will miss it when I give it away as a gift this Christmas. Happy knitting to you~
5-0 out of 5 stars Get Ready to Pull Out Those Stitch Dictionaries!
As expected, this book includes lots of traditional and innovative shawl patterns, however its true value is that it is an instruction book for designing your own shawls.

4-0 out of 5 stars great for beginners, just wish there was a little more
I bought this book without looking inside, and while I really like the technical information in the book, I have a little bit of a hesitation about recommending it wholeheartedly.I think for an absolute beginner, this would be a fabulous book.It goes over everything from color design to translating that to garments. There's a short tutorial on stitches, and a gallery of basic patterns that you can customize.
5-0 out of 5 stars VERY COOL book for anyone who knits or crochets!
I was a little skeptical about how good this book would be, but boy was I pleasantly surprised! As someone who is more of a "left-brained" knitter and crocheter, I didn't know if I would ever want to do any of the projects in this book. However, even a left-brainer such as myself can get creative with the patterns and ideas in this book.Just like "Hip to Crochet," this is a book that inspires me to pick up my often-ignored crochet hook, in addition to my well-used knitting needles.I like this book so much that I just bought one for my sister who is even more left-brained than I am!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get started with freeform crochet
I read through most of this book the day I got it because it was that good. There is a section on color theory that helps you choose your yarns, and there are clear instructions on how to put together your "scrumbles" - which are the building blocks for freeform crochet. It is more step-by-step than other books on freeform, which is good for those who need it.The pictures are beautiful and inspiring, too.I'm a long-time crocheter, but I'm new to freeform. This book inspired me to work on my first freeform project - a vest.Crocheters with a desire for more creative expression will love this book! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars fun to read -- BUT
EZ's breezy style is fun and inspiring, it's a good theory book, but her actual patterns are vague and not so easy to follow. I made one of the hats she described and had to do quite a bit of unraveling and puzzling over her instructions to get it to come out decent. For a more specific guide to knitting sweaters in the round, try Ann Budd's "Book of Sweater Patterns".

4-0 out of 5 stars Knitting freedom
Have you ever felt frustrated by the limitations of commercial knitting patterns that dictate what yarn and gauge you must use? Do you ever find a great pattern, only to see that it isn't written for your size? Have you ever wondered how the heck the knitters of the past managed to make all those pretty sweaters without patterns?
2-0 out of 5 stars NOT basic or easy to follow, contrary to what title says
I started knitting a few months ago and thought this could help me to get beyond scarves.I suppose it would if I were a sewing expert, but alas, I am not.I guess it's good for advanced knitters and designers, but not being born with natural talent for this, I need something more basic before I can comprehend this.If you're a beginner, save your money.I got more out of Stitch-n-Bitch and Leisure Arts pamphlets than I did from this book.Maybe I'll pick it up again in a couple of years. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource
I loved all the history included and I found the tutorials very easy to follow.I liked the way they are broken down into little bits, so that you are not overwhelmed with the information.Grab this one while you can.

4-0 out of 5 stars A valuable reference for designing and knitting ganseys
I agree with most of the praises other reviewers have bestowed upon this book, but I also understand the criticism in the review entitled "disappointing".I recently knitted a very challenging gansey (not one of the patterns in this book), and, as it was my first gansey ever, I used this book for reference for techniques that were unfamiliar to me. While most of the explanations were clear, a few were a bit obscure.I was surprised to see this, given the author's excellent reputation as a teacher. In these few instances, I was able to find another book with much clearer explanations of the same techniques.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
While I did find the history of Ganseys informative, the instructions for executing the techniques to construct the sampler--the instructional tool for practicing the techniques to be used in the construction of a full-size sweater--were not consistently clear.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
This book has many good patterns.I like how they describe honestly which ones are best for which figures. They have very few "what where they thinking" patterns, much fewer than many i have seen.I love that they have not forgotten that "real" women wear skirts, shawls and such and are sexy to boot.

This is by far the best and most comprehensive knitting reference book I have ever seen.I checked it out from the library and instantly succumbed to book envy.Unfortunately, reference books need to be on hand so you can....refer to them.If I had an extra $200+I would buy it in a minute.Alas, I am not burdened with surplus dollars at the moment. I'm an on again-off again knitter.I haven't been really into knitting for about 10 years but last year I really got into it again. Well somewhere along the line I bought this book, and boy am I glad I did. This book is my knitting "bible".I KNOW I can master anything about knitting if this book is resting on my knees. You knitters know what I mean.It would be nice for a reissue. Some of the terminology is dated. For instance, if you would be looking for a provisional cast on it wouldn't be in this book.Maybe by another name or something you would be able to find it.You have to look at the diagrams..

5-0 out of 5 stars Such Great Color!
The thing I like best about this book is how the author uses color. People like me stick to the monochromatic, but her designs, as simple as they are, just sing because of all the beautiful color choices she makes. I appreciate the fact that she designs using a lot of different and available yarns, too. This is a great book for beginning and experienced knitters, and I especially love the men's sweater in the book. This one is the only one I have ever come across that I'd actually attempt to knit for my husband. It's simply designed, just like most men like their sweaters, and it's not big and bulky.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charted Knitting Designs
This book is excellent.I bought this book at my local library's book sale last year for a dollar. It has the most amazing and unusual patterns in it and well worth the money. This is a must have for any serious knitter. The more challenging the patterns, the more I like the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Charted design + photo of the knitted design
Charted knitting Designs is divided into the following sections:textured fabrics, twist stitch pattern, cables, closed ring designs in cabling, cable-stitch patterns, lace panels, mosaic patterns, color patterns, uncharted miscellany and knitting directions for illustrated samples. The last chapter showcases a few simple projects that use patterns found in the book. All other chapter include a photo of the finished knitted texture and a chart (or row by row directions in the non-charted section) of the pattern. This makes visualizing a finished product so much easier and makes it easy to thumb through and look at textures. The photos cover a big enough section of fabric to really get a feel for them.
3-0 out of 5 stars Charted patterns are SOMETIMES best
I purchased this book thinking it would be similar to the first two Treasuries, but ended up being a bit disappointed. There are plenty of new patterns, of course, but much less than I'd hoped for, and many of them are (in my opinion) unattractive and unusable. Many of the cable patterns fall into this category, and some of the novelty patterns are just weird. The spider is wonderfully life-like, but I just don't know of anyone who wants a big, lifelike, textured spider knitted into their garments.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Should be mandatory reading for Knitters Anonymous
If you have more than one knitting project started and have something small in your purse to knit while waiting at traffic lights or in doctor's offices, this book is for you.If you don't knit, I can't imagine why this book would attract you unless you have somehow wildly misinterpreted the "harlot" part of the title.
5-0 out of 5 stars Original knitting humor
Reading this book was so much fun.As a knitter, but not a Knitter, I could still relate to the author's failures and triumphs. If you are a knitter looking for a good laugh, read this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud funny!
This book nails the knitting neurosis! It is laugh out loud funny, and if you are addicted to knitting, you we see yourself on page after page.If you love knitting...read this book.Although it hits a little close to home, it is worth the time to be able to laugh...if you can spare the time from knitting.I nayself have not mastered the ability to do both at the same time.I'm glad I put down the needles long enough to read this title. ...
