5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Informative!
I really enjoyed this book on macrame.I learned a lot and find that many of the techniques which I had thought were difficult are really quite easy once you get the hang of it.My sister and I go through this book together and have a lot of fun.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in this hobby.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners
Yes, this book is an excellent basic book, for people who are just knitting their first knots, which in this book are clearly explained, drawings included. So beginners, this is an ideal book. The book also offers instructions for some projects (not instructions for all of them), which could be inspiring. However, I think these projects belong to traditional art (folk art, I mean); they are not fashionable.Perhaps the challenge is to create up-to-date clothes from the basic knots.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
I have been doing Macram for quite some time and recently I have started to teach it as well.I own a number of Macram books and I still think this is the best book for beginners to start out with. The illustrations for how to tie the knots are the best that I have seen and there are hundreds of ideas for projects. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars One of my fave knitting books for babies!
There are so many great patterns in this book, and the photography is amazing.I started with one of the bootie patterns which proved quite challenging. There was no schematic or photo of the work in progress, so understanding the pattern was difficult.I wish there was a little more detail in some of the patterns, especially on the finishing. But the projects I've made are just adorable.I don't think this would be a great book for the beginner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great buy, it's become one of my favorites!
I have to disagree with some of the other reviewers. This is a gorgeous book, the photos are beautiful, the yarns used are high quality and yet affordable, and the directions are simple.
1-0 out of 5 stars unacceptable errors
I am an experienced knitter, who was drawn to the gorgeous photos of this book. I liked the idea of very simple designs that were also beautiful and could be accomplished by novice knitters. I am very glad I attempted one of the patterns before I had given this as a gift to a new knitter. The errors and ommissions in the pattern for the chunky knit cardigan were outrageous. How they could make so many mistakes in so simple a pattern is nothing short of amazing. As it stands, this book is garbage and should be reissued with corrections and apologies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful way to improve knitting skills
I'm enjoying working the squares, because they are so portable with instructions that are easy to follow. I am very glad I made this purchase, because learning these skills will allow me to knit those sweaters I'm dreaming of. Here's a tip: Wooden needles don't show up on the xray of airport security, so I was able to knit on the plane from LA to Orlando. Great way to pass the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Techniques & More
I love this "how to" book! This is a comprehensive study in many stitches, techniques, and explanations of the various aspects of knitting. The ease of transporting your work as you knit each square is a plus as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lace and Cablesand much else for new knitters
When I was young and Richard Nixon was in the White House...I knew how to knit and purl and that was about it.I had never done a project.I had made a rather dinky scarf, but that was about the extent of it.Somebody else had to cast on and bind off for me.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning to Spin
Excellent instructions for preparing the roving for spinning. Up until reading this book I was unable to get the roving to separate and allow the fibers to slip past each other. Great job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfull!
As I ventured into the world of spinning there were a many books but none interested me as much as this one. The beautifull color pictures and easy to fallow instructions are the best. even the projects in the back have meaning to the beginner spinner. The best part is that there is instructions on how to make your own spindle!

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful hints for designing your own
It's full of interesting and beautiful sweaters and even socks. The modules can be put together in many creative ways for unusual color effects. But I bought it because the design tips in "Domino Knitting" by V. Hoxbro are too vague. Ginger Luters is a bit vague too, but she does have graph paper. The only way to design is make a swatch, measure it, make drawings and calculations, and dive in. The sweater is still in progress but is coming along just fine. I'm in my 50's and wouldn't mind wearing any of the women's sweaters in Luters' book, especially "De Colores". Brilliant and vibrant yet tasteful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Module Magic
I was hoping to build a sweater with blocks knitted from left over yarn but the styles in this book were not suitable for me--a 60+ knitter.
5-0 out of 5 stars Try this with a K.I.S.S.
It is indeed magic and a delightful innovation to tempt long-time knitters. These authors have brought this technique alive within the knitting community and this beautiful book is as a good a place to start as any. A few things you need to know - (the K.I.S.S. rule of Keep it simple) modules are easy and fun to make but they extend the time a project takes - maybe even by double. Also, this book presents too many riches for the beginning knitter, who can come away believing this is too complex to master. As with any new technique, everyone can learn this technique and most will love it, providing you pick one of their easier projects and keep it simple until you learn the properties of the modules: e.g. they don't all end up exactly the same size even if you are careful to check gauge, properties of different yarns will change not only the size but the 'squareness' of modules, you can't substitute yarns and stitches unless you do swatches. To their credit, the authors of course advise you to check gauge, do swatches, etc. but they don't give one piece of advice needed to prevent heartache: do a simple project or two before attempting the mouthwatering, expensive, and complex beauties in the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative Knitting
This is a fun book for the intermediate knitter.Modular knitting is a great way to use odd balls of yarn or to avoid the boredom of straight knitting and the tediousness of seaming a garment. It is particularly fun to either mix yarns or to use the the new "hand paint" color mixes and watch what happens as you knit. Some prior knitting experience would be helpful, but the projects are not difficult if one can read and follow directions. The book is well written and understandable and the projects are lovely. The styles are reasonably classic but fun, both to make and to wear.By "classic" I mean they will not go out of fashion like a passing fad. After investing your time in creating an item, you will be able to enjoy wearing it for many years.I am totally delighted with the book and will enjoy using the patterns and ideas for many projects.I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book of enticing designs full of errors
I've been fascinated with modular knitting for years and teach the technique at yarn shops. This book has some unusual techniques to share and the designs are first-rate.HOWEVER, there are errors galore.I've worked my way through about 4 of the 'tutorials' and hit the wall every time due to errors in the pattern. I had some experienced knitting friends attempt the tutorials and patterns as well and they all had the same experience--errors galore that make it impossible to execute the designs.

Ms. Schreier requested that her internet group write a positive review of her book with the promise of a free pattern.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginner-intermediate knitters
I had never (purposefully) felted anything before I saw this book a week ago.Since then, I've made the purple/green beaded purse and am almost finished with the "lunch sack" bag as well.I've learned how to pick up and knit, as well as make i-cord and it was surprisingly easy to do.
5-0 out of 5 stars I have sticky notes all over this book!
I have so many of these patterns on my 'to knit' list, that the book is just covered with sticky notes. There are so many really cute bags. And the introduction and instruction on felting is the best that I've found. It is rare that I find a book with so many patterns that I want to make!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for all
This is an exceptional beginners book on felting. I have tried several of the projects with sucess. Inspiring projects and great photography make this a must have. The instructions are clear and the yarns are relatively easy to find. On some occasions, I have altered the pattern a bit, without any difficulty.Felting is by far more art than science. This was my first exposure to felting, which has become a wonderful creative outlet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome resource for learning Fair Isle Knitting!
Unlike the other reviewers here, I bought this book as my first Sally Melville book, at a time when I wanted to learn Fair Isle Knitting. There weren't any instructors available where I live who could teach this technique to me, so I was extremely thankful to find this teaching resource, which made it possible for me to learn Fair Isle Knitting from the photos and well written instructions alone.I bought the book for the instruction, not the patterns.I was just grateful that there was someone this talented willing to take the time to author a really outstanding teaching book. All the photos in the book were taken on location in Greece, which were very beautiful, and helpful in establishing an inspired and relaxed setting to read through the content. This book really shines as a book on how to use multiple colors in a single project, based on specific techniques like Fair Isle and Intarsia. There are some stylish patterns in this book, including a Fair Isle handbag, with incredible use of color in the examples (I'd love to find this yarn!), a log cabin type afghan in beautiful earth tone colors, a tea cozy in an argyle pattern, and a multi-colored cardigan in a tile pattern that were all very classic and elegant. Some of the other patterns sort of looked like prayer jackets, which is not my style, but some people might enjoy the unstructured style of this look.In summary, I'd much, much rather buy a book with really great instruction and a few inspiring patterns rather than a book full of inspiring projects and not enough instruction to really be effective.I give this book a 5 star rating!

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great book by Sally Melville
I love Sally's Knit (book 1) and Purl (book 2), so it seemed only right to buy this one too!It is a beautiful books with great illustrations and patterns, but dare I say a little advanced for this newbie knitter, so for now, it sits on my bookshelf until I feel competent enough to tackle one of the many projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pictures don't do these beautiful sweaters justice
I just took a class on color knitting with Sally Melville, and had a chance to see some of the sweaters from this book up close and personal. They are gorgeous.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's about time!
Finally -- a designer has recognized the need to provide cute, functional projects that can make use of all the odds and ends sitting in knitters' stashes! There are several projects in this book that I'm itching to get started on. And it's an added bonus knowing I'm using up "leftover" yarn to make them!

This knitting book is notwhat I expected at all. I'm not crazy about it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I fist saw the book offered in a knitting catalog in November of 2005 and was eager to purchase the book and put to use some of my lonely skeins of yarn. They nor several other companies that offered the book were able to get it from the publisher.I kept calling these places on a weekly basis and one company even called me and told me they were giving up on the book. In July of 2006 I discovered it on Amazon and placed an order and it arrived in no time. After skimming through the book I was disappointed that I put so much time and effort into trying to obtain the book.I was inot impressed with the patterns offered in the book. The patterns in the book one can find in most other knit books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quick, easy patterns that make you want to knit...
I just learned how to knit over the summer and my first project was a sweater from the baby knits book. My older child was asking where his sweater was, so I was excited to get this book and find a pattern to tackle for him. There are so many sweaters and other projects that even a new knitter can create something really impressive. The explanations of more complicated stitches and patterns are detailed and very clear to help those who are ready to advance their skills try something new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't find patterns for older kids?Plenty in this new book
Older kids need trendy knits in their size; the Yarn Girls' Guide to Knits for Older Kids has a lot of patterns kids will like. There are hoodies, colorful cardigans, thick pullovers, shawls, afghans and pillows. Something for boys and girls alike. If you like to knit or if you have a pre-teen knitter, this book will be in hot demand.
