5-0 out of 5 stars A visual feast!
I got this book on a whim, not knowing much about what patterns I'd find within. When it arrived in the mail, I pored over all the beautiful things inside and then brought it to my knitting class that night. My knitting friends are all jealous and have found patterns they want to make too - but the work is pretty advanced. There are some lovely color patterns, some cable ones - just gorgeous - but not for the faint of heart. I like that there are some for children as well. The photos are stunningly beautiful and I know I'll get a lot of use out of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good Alice Starmore book still in print
Alice Starmore is a very artistic and creative designer. Her out of print titles go for prices of $100-$700 on ebay, so order ths one while it is in print! Beatiful pictures and sweater designs with many shaded colors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely sweaters
Alice Starmore is justly famed for her beautiful colorwork and cable designs. These sweaters -- for men, women, and children -- are all about the fabric. The shaping is always very simple, with drop sleeves and boxy shapes. The directions are very clear and finishing is easy. If you can work from charts, you should not have any difficulty making the colorwork sweaters; in traditional Fair Isle style, there are only 2 colors to a row.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Information
This is an excellent book for a beginner spinner with a spindle. I have found it to be very helpful and recommend it to other beginner spindlers. While many of the hand drawn pictures work just fine, it can be difficult to figure out the actual MOTION required to roll a spindle up or down a leg and drafting, I believe, really does take someone showing you.. . or just a heck of a lot of practice. The best thing about this book is how encouraging she is and how it really is perfectly acceptable to just spin. Practical advise, however, abounds and she gives good suggestions for how to make different yarns for different uses.

2-0 out of 5 stars See the other reviews before buying
I respect Priscilla and she is a great teacher. She's done some wonderful books with great details. Frankly, the ones from Nomad Press have not been very good. And this is the ultimate blow--to update a book previously released and not bother to mention it anywhere. This is the High Whorling book with updated pictures and a few updated details. Since I already own that book, it was a total waste for me to buy this one. If you don't own it, then this is definitely worth buying. I'm very disappointed and will be leery of buying any more Nomad Press books. There's no excuse for treating this like it is new material.

5-0 out of 5 stars REPRINT of great OOP book
On the plus side: if you haven't been able to get a copy of High Whorling, now a reprint is available. The definitive book about spinning with a high whorl spindle.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some beautiful sweaters, but yarn and gauge info is missing
While I like many of the sweaters in the book, even as a very experienced knitter I find the instructions problematic.First, I would like to see a picture of the WHOLE SWEATER, front & back. Artsy little pictures of a small section just don't interest me.Secondly, since I frequently substitute yarn, I would like yardage and gauge in stockinette stitch info.I don't want to have to knit 1/2 of a sweater's front or back to find out if my yarn will work. And, even when gauge in stockinette stitch is given for a few of the projects, I would never be able to achieve the designer's gauge. For a dk yarn that would normally knit at 22 stitches to 4 inches, this designer knits 30 stitches to 4 inches. This makes it impossible for me to estimate the correct gauge for any of the sweates and makes the instructions pretty useless.Very frustrating.
5-0 out of 5 stars IF YOU LOVE CABLES LIKE I DO? THEN YOU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK TOO!!
I love working any type of cables and celtic or aran designs, but LOVE CABLES MOSTLY! The more Intricate the Better! I found these designs to be very easy to follow, especially from the charts, and the Beautiful, Up Close, photos were very helpful for the visualization part. You definetely should have some knitting years behind you, this is not for your average novice knitter(unless you are a very determined one, like I was). I have already made the one shell design, which turned better, than the Photo actually!! I will definetely be making and returning to this book for more beautiful Cable Inspiration and wonderful hours of Knitting Pleasure to come in the months and years ahead! THANK-YOU! FOR SUCH A BEAUTIFUL AND INSPIRATIONAL COLLECTION OF CABLE DESIGNS, I COULDN'T BE MORE PLEASED!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment!!
If you want aran knitting, buy "Aran Sweater Design" by Janet Szabo, "The Best of Knitter's Aran & Celtics" or"Aran Knitting" by Alice Starmore, those are excellent books, this book lack originality and good information. The 'one star' is for the photographer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!!!
Sometimes I just want to pick up a knitting book just to drool over the designs, colors, textures rather than attempt something. The patterns appear rather well written and easy to follow-it's just that I am a basic, basic, basic knitter and have not reached this "Zen" level of knitting. This book TOTALLY inspired me to keep going. I WANT to be able to knit like this and use these yarns. I saw one review that said she couldn't find the yarn. Concidentally, the other day I was in AC Moore craft store and picked up a magazine titled Interweave Knits. Almost every one of the yarns were listed in this magazine! I will always reach for this book for inspiration.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lavish with Some Practical Problems
This book is beautiful beyond belief. The photographs are beautiful and it's interesting to compare and contrast the different views of handpainting yarn and design sensibilities presented here. I also liked the insights provided into running small yarn companies coupled with the sense of craft in different parts of the US. The big pages can inspire dreams about knitting and the book is a great spur to the imagination. Some of the designs are not to my taste but there are many tastes presented here and I'm sure most readers would find plenty of things they like.5-0 out of 5 stars Need inspiration?read this book!
As a handspinner, I'm always curious about what other spinners and dyers are doing.Handpaint Country was impossible to put down. The photos are beautiful and I was enchanted by the stories of the women who spin and dye in the book.Their yarns are gorgeous!i thought some of the projects in the book were a little odd, but other than that, it's a great book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a Bargain!
I have had a blast knitting Christmas stockings for the whole family with this book. The great thing is, with one book, you have almost unlimited patterns available (much cheaper than buying a kit or a pattern for each stocking!), and yet everyone can choose a pattern that expresses his or her individuality. My husband chose the simple "Rustic Lodge" stocking, while I wanted the more challenging "Lace Brocade."And with the mix-and-match stocking, you really could have endless possibilities. The instructions were clear, although even when you use the exact yarn and needles described, check your gauge (you can't be off when you're knitting on a circular needle!).5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stocking Patterns
I loved this book much like it's counter parts, Knit Mittens and Knit Hats. I have made 6 stockings so far and intend to knit more. The patterns are explicit enough for the novice knitter. However there are patterns for the experienced knitter as well. I enjoy the shape of these books (they take me back to my childhood). I highly recommend this book. The "elves" have done well with this one. Merry Christmas! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nicely photographed, some nice sweaters
The book itself is nicely put together, with color and b&w photos of the sweaters. There is at least one sweater in here that will appeal to you, although most are designed for younger women. There are a few for men, none for children. Most are inventive, which is refreshing since Rowan's typical line has styled itself towards the simple with bulky wools, etc. These sweaters take more work, and they are made either with the new line of Yorkshire tweeds or with Rowan magpie.Color photos accompany the instructions.Lots of fun to browse and contemplate, though I haven't made anything from these patterns yet so cannot say if the patterns themselves are easy to use. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A "Knit it all-book"
The book just arrived today. Staying for lazy days in our summer house by the Sognefiord (Norway), I could read the book at once. I know that I am going to knit ALL the patterns in this book, just as I have done with the patterns in the other books in the small Vogue Knitting-books. My small grandchildren liked the Tea Cosy on front page with all the nice buttons. They thought it was a hat. Of course I can knit hats like that. I have started to sort out the wool yarn in my stash and will start tomorrow.

5-0 out of 5 stars a keeper!
As a life long knitter and spinner, I'm always on the lookout for the new and unusual, but am very particular about what I actually buy. Vogue's little felting book is a winner. Clear directions, creative ideas, and a new look for my knitting projects - what could be better. Highly recommended for the crafter who wants to take it up a level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Fun, Very Vogue!
Just what you would expect from Vogue - like all the other little hardback Vogue 'Knitting on the Go' books. Lots of dreamy project ideas that look just a little more stylish, a little more unique than the standard patterns out there. I own an embarrassing number of knitting books (I could never knit something from all of them!) but time and again I go back to the 'Vogue Knitting on the Go' books for a quick gift, a fun pick-me-up or in-between project, or sometimes just to remind myself why we knit. ... Many, many great ideas for any type of items you can imagine. I'm making a shawl right now with a crochet pattern I found in the book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Phenominal!
This book is amazing!I'm not even completely through the first section and I find that it's been well worth the money.Even if you never plan on designing your own sweaters this book is worth reading. The explanations of how the various factors such as body shape, 'standard' measurements and the drape of different yarn types affect the finished project will help anyone improve on the fit of even published patterns as well as improve your satisfaction with the final product.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
When I first bought this book, my knitting experience was not matured enough to appreciate the depth of the information contained in this book.To be honest, I was even dissapointed since the style of sweaters shown was not stylish, the models wearing them were not stylish commercial models. The book is full of English text and has no eye-candy photos. So it had been sitting in my bookshelf for almost one year,I even thought about selling it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for would-be designers!
I checked this book out of the library since I am fascinated with the idea of designing my own sweaters. But this book offers much, much more. It teaches the basics of color, it tells what colors work for you and why. Then there is a section on figure types. What sweater designs flatter and which do not. And the chapter does not have just the usual hour glass, pear, top heavy distinctions, there's the rectangle, the triangle, the oval, the tiffany diamond.... It is almost garanteed the you will find your body type in the list.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Variety
I have made both a scarf and a lacy shawl from this book, and enjoyed both patterns.I also really enjoy pulling this book from the shelf and looking at the different patterns.
1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading subtitle
The title of this book reads, "Scarf Style: Innovative to Traditional, 31 Inspirational Styles to Knit and Crochet".I assumed from this that there would be roughly equal numbers of knit and crochet patterns, or possibly a slightly skewed ratio like 20 of one and ten of the other.Imagine my disappointment that only three of the patterns are for crochet; the other 28 are knitted.I am glad I checked it out from the library to try before buying it, because it is not what I expected.
4-0 out of 5 stars easy to follow patterns
i love how this book doesn't focus on just the yarn that was used in the picture.it gives you yarn dimensions so you don't have to limit yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Tool
This book has helped me out with techniques where pattern instructions have failed.Sure it doesn't have glossy photos, but I've picked this one up for help countless times. It even has an explanation for the yarn care label graphics. Its not a book to sit down and read, but great to pick up for reference -- and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knitter's Handbook - Don't leave home without it
I love this book. I'm a beginner knitter that needs to know terms, abbrevations, and how to do the stiches besides knit and purl. There are patterns on the market that I have no clue as to what they are talking about. I chose this book based on reviews I read on the internet and I'm glad I bought it. It is a great reference book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Knitter's Handbook A comprehensive guide

I love this book!!! The photos of these pups are amazing--how on earth did they get these little dogs to pose so well? And there are adorable little puppy profiles, describing the likes and dislikes of each model! So funny. The projects are irresistible--I love the bright pink knitted neck-warming on that gorgeous pug! And the Jester sweater on the cover is to die for. Love, love, love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny - a beautiful book!
I am usually pleased with anything done by Interweave Press, and this book is no exception. It is beautifully done - nice photography, clear directions, short bios of the contributors, easy projects, more challenging projects....need I go on?It is printed on nice quality paper, and the book is big enough that it will lie open as you follow the directions on your needles. This book contains a lot of smaller projects that will be great to work on in the summer months (think Christmas!) when I don't want a heavy project on my lap. Some of these projects I have seen in other books, but it is nice to have them here together.A good choice for your home library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homespun Handknit: Caps, Socks, Mittens & Gloves
I own lots of knitting books and this one by far is the best.I do a lot of charity knitting and there are lots of patterns I use.My favorite is the knitted helmet, great for my deer hunting friends.
3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Patterns - Too Tricky

5-0 out of 5 stars Plea to reprint this
If you are a lace knitter and would like to have a copy of this publication, please contact the Dover Books (Customer Service) and request them to reprint this book. The more people making the request increases the probability of it getting back into print. The book is an excellent resource for learning to understand the process of lace knitting but the resale amount is utterly beyond reason. Check your local library for a copy and if they do not have one, ask the reference librarian to do an interlibrary loan, it may take a few weeks before you get it but you have not spend hundreds of dollars on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Sweaters
This book is awesome.I highly recommend this book if your at all interested in knitting Islandic sweaters...this is the book for you!The sweater patterns are gorgeous! The patterns are easy explained and the graphs are easy to read.I have made several sweaters from this book and I am very happy with all of them.I also like the way they give you differnt color combinations for most of the sweaters also.Just in case you don't care for the colors it's knitted in in the book, they give you another color combination.I definatley recommend purchasing a Lopi color card sample if your not able to actually see the yarn before you buy it.I got mine on line where I buy my lopi yarn.Just like everything...the colors of the yarn vary from the way they look in the book. This book is definatley worth buying.I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied with this book
Though I have yet to knit a sweater from this book (just received it last week, and have nearly completed a pair of socks from it,) I suspect that it will be one of my most-used knitting books. It contains many sweater patterns, most of which are sized from extra small to extra large, and a number of patterns for socks, mittens and hats as well. I feel that the selection of sweater patterns is well-balanced; there are of course the traditional Icelandic round-yoked sweaters, but there are also patterns for cabled sweaters and a cabled jacket, fairisle, and many other pullovers and cardigansinspired by the traditions of other countries. There are some very nice patterns for men as well as for women and children, which is nice because attractive men's sweater patterns can be difficult to come across. The book also contains information on what exactly Lopi yarn is, plus color charts of both Lopi and Lopi Lite. Then next sweater I start will be the Norwegian-inspired men's cardigan, and I also plan to knit the little girls' poncho and the fantastic Snorri aran before next Christmas. For myself I want to knit the cabled jacket; for my mom the very unique textured, multicolored jacket; for my sister the hooded, zippered jacket with colorwork edging . . . I guess you can say that this book inspires me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid, but hardly the "best" of Lopi.
This book is wonderful, but it hardly deserves the appellation "best". The editors, in my opinion, made some very odd choices about what to include (and, conversely, to exclude.) I understand that they were aiming for variety: a mix of cardigans and pullovers, traditional and modern styles, classic neutrals and cheerful, bright colors. There are a few challenging patterns in the collection (Sigridur, with its many three-color rows, comes to mind) but generally the editors have made an obvious effort to keep the book beginning-knitter-friendly.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book for your babies!!
Every dog mommy who knits should get this book. Ilove it!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Partially good, partially mediocre
I've knitted one sweater out of this book.It didn't fit my dog, but I guess her body is shaped weirdly.I don't think it was errata on her part, I think it was mostly mine. But I ended up having to "rig" it so badly that I didn't think twice when I left it on her overnight in a friend's backyard and it's been sitting in a grocery bag covered in grass ever since, stretched out of shape.Eh.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great patterns for large dogs
I have a large yellow golden retreiver. The vet and all the people at the pet store continually comment on how big he is. This book is great since it offers patterns in realistic sizes. It breaks down the sizes according to breed and measurements from XS to XXL. There seem to be many books with patterns for small dogs but not many books with patterns for large dogs. Not all the pattens are in all sizes, but the author gives information on adapting pattern sizes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THERE ARE MEASUREMENTS PROVIDED
In response to the April 13th review titled Beginners Beware--As one of the authors of the book, I respect all opinions. However, I want to clarify that measurements are provided for each project in the book. There are schematics and we list the finished measurements at the beginning of each pattern.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!!!
I bought this book and I love it.And I had to put my 2 cents in here after seeing the April 13th review. The patterns are wearable, fun to knit, yet not too fussy. Also they are very easy to seam and wonderful instructions for doing so are provided in the comprehensive how to section. I have knit several of the sweater patterns so far and they fit perfectly! There are knitted measurements as well as specs for each sweater pattern - which are extremely helpful when deciding what size to knit.I would recommend this book to beginners and veterans alike.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beginners Beware
The projects are cute, but every single project requires seaming.Things like hats and raglan sweaters and knit flat and seamed.Finished bust measurements are not provided, you have to calculate this on your own. Yarns used are very costly and not always easy to find at your local yarn shop.I couldn't recommend this book to anyone who was just starting to knit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Combines both artistic flair and solid knitting techniques!
As an experienced knitter, I am really enjoying knitting the exciting designs and exploring the interesting techniques in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love This Book!
Most books on knitted or crocheted bags have boring patterns with the same types of bags in every book. This one actually has interesting bags in it and ones that I would love to own myself. For someone who wants something that not only showcases world culture and ethnic influences, but also wonderful colors and textures used in handbags, this book has no equal.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely and interesting
This is a lovely book, I enjoyed the stories about each bag, and the photos. There is a good variety of bags, with skill levels from basic to advanced.I probably will never knit most of them, but I learned a lot from reading the directions. The style of the bags is definitely ethnic, most are brightly colored, they may not suit everyone's taste. ...
