5-0 out of 5 stars Unique and enthusiastically recommended
Donna Druchunas is an expert knitwear designer whose work has been showcased in Family Circle, Easy Knitting, Interweave Knits, PieceWork, Knitter's, INKnitter's, and Fiber Focus magazines. In "Arctic Lace: Knitted Projects And Stories Inspired By Alaska's Native Knitters", Donna has created a 192-page, single-volume workshop on knitting and designing lace with an Inuit flair. In addition to the fifteen individual "user friendly" projects provided with careful step-by-step instructions, "Arctic Lace" is enhanced with 171 b/w photographs, 91 b/w illustrations, 28 tables, 11 sidebars, an extensive bibliography, and a comprehensive index. These projects are adaptable to any yarn and demonstrate to even the most novice needlecrafter just how to make the most of luxury fibers. There is even extensive background information on the natural history of musk oxen, conservation efforts, and the fiber quality and use of their fur which is the source of Qiviut (or musk ox down), felt by many to be the world's warmest, lightest-weight fiber and a mainstay of Alaska's native knitters. "Arctic Lace" is a unique and enthusiastically recommended addition to any dedicated needlecrafter's reference collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book on lace and the arctic knitters of Alaska
This book has everything going for it--terrific instruction about knitting lace, amazing information about the arctic musk ox--the rare animal that produces the softest most beautiful yarn around--and stories about the native alaskan knitters who developed their own system for producing gorgeous knitted lace projects based on traditional art and imagery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Your Typical Knitting Book
ARCTIC LACE is not your typical knitting book. Not only does it provide an array of native alaskan designs for every knitting level, it also offers easy to follow tutorials with templates for designing your own unique lace projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shawl shapes and how to design your own
I'm new to lace knitting, but not new to knitting.I've become fascinated with lace shawls and was looking for a good introduction. This book is exactly what I was looking for.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
I am happy with this book. It has some example patterns and then a bunch of stitch patterns so you can create your own once you are comfortable with shawl making.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great shawl book

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the book forlace knitting novices!
This is the most beautiful book I've seen on lace but not matter how hard I tried, I could not follow the charts. It is an inspiration but if a beginner tries this, it's a bit of a disappointment.
4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely pleased!
Contrary to what others have said, I knit my first "real" lace shawl from this book - the Faux Russian Stole. I found the pattern very easy to follow so long as you pay attention. I am planning on knitting at least two other projects from this book, I love it so much! As for errata, it's wise to check for mistakes in ANY knitting book before you begin. Since I work in the book industry, I know that the pattern may be perfect when it goes to the printer, but errors sometimes occur and are out of the control of the designer in most cases.
5-0 out of 5 stars The very BEST lace knitting reference book
I have this book and am currently knitting two shawls from the book--Shetland Tea Shawl and Frost Flowers & Leaves.I am really enjoying knitting lace and have found this particular book to be very inspiring and a big help also.If you love to knit lace, you must own this book!! ... Read more

This is a great book to learn lacemaking with. Very clear and uses the techniques used by most American teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning to learn torchon bobbin lace
The reason I like this book is that the diagrams and photographs are clear and use colored threads. Editorial Review

When viewing the magnificent floral forms that Candace Kling creates, it'ssometimes hard to believe that they are actually pleated, gathered, ruched, and twistedribbons--not the real thing. Her gorgeous ribbon flowers appear to be extremely intricateand complicated, but her extensive directions and diagrams take the mystery out ofrecreating everything from roses to pansies to poppies to daffodils. After nearly twodecades of researching antique ribbon work, her knowledge of vintage pieces is evidentin much of her work and in her finely tuned sense of color. The many photos of vintageribbon-work flowers, not to mention those of her own artistry, are themselves worth theprice of the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Directions Ever!
I've seen most of the ribbon flower books that there are--and this is pretty much the best.It has instructions that are clear and very easy to follow and there are so many different ideas for you to use.Not just a couple of projects--so many for you to combine.I have taken this book out of the library so many times that I wanted to keep it.Then I remembered I could buy it online!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best book on Ribbonwork!
This is the best book on ribbonwork. It incorporates many beautiful pictures of vintage and some contemporary work. The entire book is instructional (no silly projects to fill the pages!!!). The instructions are excellent and this is as close to a "beginners" introduction to the subject as I have been able to find. At first I was disappointed that there were very few photographs of instructions. Often the instructions use drawings and often drawings are the only examples of the completed piece. But, what I have come to love is the lack of pictures for instruction. This book achieves something many art/craft books fail to. It requires you to practice, to use a variety materials and to create your own color combinations. It makes the "copying" of another's work no concern, because basically, you cannot. The subject is so well covered you will have an understanding of it: from foliage, to flowers, to stabilizing your work for wear on clothing, hats, and pins, to stems and buds, to flat and dimensional, to texture and how to preserve your work, etc. I haven't found a better book and I do not expect to. I thank the author for covering subjects like the movement, or "dance," of the work and for challenging me with the drawings - to try it and then see how it looks. Last but not least, the author introduces a great way to figure how much ribbon you will need to make any project using any ribbon width! So you can make ANY size flower you want. Ms. Kling makes your journey an unexpectedly easy fall - into a creative medium more satisfying than anything I've dabbled in besides beads - which one can incorporate too, of course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute "Eye Candy" for the "Ribbonaholic"
This book has got to be one of the best and most comprehensive books out there on ribbonwork. It not only showcases the antique items where the colors have faded to perfect glory, but also incorporates the new and runs the gamut from embroidering with silk ribbon to forming flowers and bows of the ribbons.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Tutorial on Knitting Orenburg Lace
This book is extremely detailed in the art of knitting Orenburg Shawls. There are charts for basic patterns used in the traditional shawls and at the back a full shawl is charted for practice knitting Orenburg Lace. There is even a small sampler shawl you can knit to learn the techniques of the full sized ones.A great book, necessary for any lace knitter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shawls that weigh 80 grams and look like fairy wings
There are directions here to knit Orenburg-style shawls, but unless you are an experienced knitter, you may find that the instructions are a bit frustrating. Orenburg shawls look a lot like Shetland cobweb lace shawls (but which came first? Orenburg shawls are mentioned in writing at least back to the beginning of the 18th Century.) The technique starts with an edging, then corners are turned and the body of the lace shawl is knitted together with the side edging. 4-0 out of 5 stars great, but sometimes stumbles
My problem with the book is pretty small. For the most part I think it is a very beautiful and special book. The shawls are beautiful and the text is interesting. My only problem is that the instructions for the full-sizeshawl are a little iffy in points, like telling you to knit in the"corner stitch" without once ever explaining this maneuver. Mostly a beautiful book, though ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good addition to a collection of books on lace knitting
This is a good lace learner's book. The projects develop from very simple to more complex. For each project there is an excellent discussion of yarn, needles, and the pattern as well as the author's inspiration for the project.Unfortunately, the author tries too hard to justify the yarn selection. It's clear she has a friend who dyes the yarn and is trying to showcase the yarn often at the expense of the lace pattern.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, beautiful lace!
I liked this book so well, I ordered a second copy as a gift for a dear friend.I won't always be able to afford the hand-painted yarns to work with, but even just using less expensive yarns will still create some truly beautiful works of art.The patterns aren't difficult to follow, and the results are worth the concentration! I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Beautiful Lace
This is a must have for lace knitters. The only problem I have is that all the patterns are charted. I prefer to knit from written instructions. Many times, both are included, but not in this book. The photos are very nice. There is a nice variety of projects also. Just be prepared for charts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Plea to reprint this
If you are a lace knitter and would like to have a copy of this publication, please contact the Dover Books (Customer Service) and request them to reprint this book. The more people making the request increases the probability of it getting back into print. The book is an excellent resource for learning to understand the process of lace knitting but the resale amount is utterly beyond reason. Check your local library for a copy and if they do not have one, ask the reference librarian to do an interlibrary loan, it may take a few weeks before you get it but you have not spend hundreds of dollars on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shop Around for a Great Pattern Book
The lace knitting/knitted lace patterns are uniquely presented in this book. All of the lace knitting/knitted lace patterns (there is a difference) are presented as 1 pattern for a very long scarf/sample strip.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for lace knitters
Directed to somewhat experienced knitters, this book is a jewel. All the main patterns in Shetland lace are covered, providing detailed instructions and CHARTS! The various techniques are explained with clear pictures, and there are very useful tips scattered around the book. Not many patterns for complete projects, but the goal is to teach the readers to make their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic lace patterns for tablecloths or shawls
This second book of Modern Lace Knitting is great for the experienced lace knitter. I found the patterns in her first book more appealing and pretty, however these patterns are also excellent. The lace patterns are classic and are written for tablecloths and runners, however they work up very well in lace yarn for shawls or ponchos with few modifications. If you are not experienced with lace I would recommend Lavish Lace by Noble and Potter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite lace knitting
This book is a continuation of "First Book of Modern Lace Knitting" and if anything the designs are even more exquisite than they were in the first book.Neither is for the beginner but any lace knitter will enjoy the book which has the most wonderful all lace tablecloths and household linen.
5-0 out of 5 stars The most beautiful lace knitting you'll ever see
These patterns are collected from vintage knitting from over the years, and they are the best of the best. This book has a Rose pattern that looks great knitting up in wool yarn for a shawl, as well as in thinner cotton for a table cloth. This book isn't really suitable for a beginner; if you are new to lace knitting, I recommend Martha Waterman's book first, then move on to this one.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and important for adding a tassel touch
Tassels provides step-by-step instructions for creating sixteen decorative tassels, covering everything from choosing threads to finishing touches. Any involved in crafts or arts projects will find this very specific guide useful and important for adding a tassel touch to a design or piece: the black and white step-by-step illustrations are very clear and the color photos excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner from Susan Dickens!
Susan comes up with another winner - both beginning tassel makers and experienced designers will appreciate this book. This book is a sophisticated sequel to her earlier The Art of Tassel Making.Basics oftassel anatomy and construction techniques will ease beginners into thiswonderful textile art.Among the most useful tips for experienced tasselmakers are instructions on how to replicate vintage jasmine petalcomponents, decorative strips and flower centers by embroidering over asheet aluminum base. Also detailed are ribbon flowers, chevron wrapped andpeyote stitched tassel heads, and beaded overskirts.Theimpeccablyconstructedtassels are simply but beautifully photographed, and Jane'sillustrations are easy to follow.Seven tassels pictured are fairly basicin style and construction, with the remaining nine showing various stylesof additional embellishment. This book is another "must have"for anyone smitten with the creative art of tassel making! On the negativeside, be forewarned that the much-awaited Suppliers List does not containany US suppliers; this was a major disappointment.Other than thatomission, Susan's new book was another delightful read from beginning toend. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Book of Tatting
This is an excellent book for the novice or experienced tatter. The book offers excellent directions and diagrams for projects in the book as well as information for the tatter to begin designingand completing their own patterns.

5-0 out of 5 stars A super teaching manual with a great collection of patterns!
This lovely book is an excellent buy for the beginner learning to make tatted lace as well as for the more experienced tatter wanting a good collection of small patterns.Ms Jones starts off with descriptions of six different methods of tatting, with the hope that if you don't understand one method you'll understand one of the others.Details are given of a range of different techniques including lock stitch, roll tatting, cluny tatting and others, however there are no instructions for split rings or self closing mock rings as these had not yet been popularised at the time the book was written in the 1980s.
5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for every Tatter!
I purchased this book upon the recommendation of my tatting mentor. Like my mentor, I agree that all tatters should own this book. It is a substantive work, addressing the many techniques of shuttle and needle tatting--both basic and advanced. There are a number of patterns which provide excellent practice for beginners and food for thought for budding designers and advanced tatters. I frequently return to this book as a reference for tatting technique and for patterns to tat quick projects or gifts. Rebecca Jones' Complete Book of Tatting should be required reading for every tatter! ... Read more
