A true treasure of a book
This book truly is a wonderful introduction to needlepoint lace.Nenia Lovesey gives clear and explicit directions for a wealth of stitches, and offers several variations for many of them.The clear close-up black andwhite photos give an excellently detailed look at works both completed andin progress.Ms. Lovsey gives a brief history of needlepoint lace, but thebulk of the book is devoted to getting you started.There is a chapter ondesigning lace patterns.There are also patterns given for lace for awedding gown and christening outfit...even patterns for a lace parasol fora doll.So far it is the best instruction book for needlepoint lace thatI've found. ... Absolute bobbins!
This book is a godsend for collectors of lace and bobbins. I'm a big fan of Bucks Point Bobbin lace, my partner prefers Flanders and Binche - but both our tastes are catered for in this marvellous work by Jeffery (Jeff) Hopewell - who is, for me, a master at talking bobbins. Being from Nottingham, famous for its Lace Market, lace warehouses, lace curtains, and shoe laces, it's quite a nostalgia trip as well. You can do some exotic things with bobbin lace. This book is not exactly traditional; and the instructions are not the easiest to follow. I think the instructions are more of a definition to how the person in the book made their art. However there are a few supply descriptions, and a fare how to get started chapter. There is a small bibliography, and a source page.Read more

This is one of those rare finds
We tatters seem to try to find all the books we can gobble up, and I think this one is not as well known as the other tatting books.The other books may be easy to find, or may be cheaper (the dover series booklets, which are just fine) butI think this book is a wonderful addition to a tatter's library, and worth the $$. It has many edgings suitable for linens or dresses, and one that is a bit more tailored and is on a ladies blouse.The patterns are pretty, not too wacky, and are used in various projects - clothing (blouse, child's smocked dress with tatted collar, petticoat with edging and insertion, apron with edging) hankies, doiles (round, square, hexagon), needlecase, linens (tea towels, toaster cover with medallion insert), a ladies collar, etc. There are no religious items, and I have plenty of those patterns already. The text is very nicely written. Ms Sparks is very pleasant. The patterns are visual diagrams, with numbers on the diagram. Easy enough to understand. The instructions don't baby you along, you are expected to know where to start, but with a project or two under your belt it is not a problem. I don't think there are any split rings, but there are josephine rings. I don't really want to comment on the tatting instruction, only because once I learned to tat (using Rozella Linden's Easy Tatting, by the way) I never even look at the instructions in any book. If you need to learn shuttle tatting, get Lindens book, and once you've gotten the hang of shuttle-and-second-thread tatting, add this book to your collection!!!
